One of our favorite parts about proposal planning is brainstorming ideas that feel personal.

During our conversations with Greg, we explored several possibilities.

One thing many people don't realize before arriving is that it isn't a massive botanical garden.

In fact, you can comfortably explore the entire property in less than ten minutes.

The winding paths, towering cacti, desert flowers, and unique plant collections create countless beautiful backdrops within a relatively small space.

For photographers, however, the compact layout creates an interesting challenge.

Although the garden appears much larger in photographs, there are only a handful of areas that provide enough open shade during the middle of the day for flattering portraits.

Knowing how the light moves through the garden becomes incredibly important.

Proposal Day in Palm Springs

The morning of May 30, Steph and I arrived around 11:00 AM.

Parking is straightforward but often surprises first-time visitors.

There isn't a dedicated parking lot directly attached to the garden.

Most guests either park along South Palm Canyon Drive or use the adjacent dirt parking area across the street before walking over.

After paying admission (currently $7 per adult; children may have different admission rates, so it's always a good idea to check the garden's latest pricing before your visit), we walked through the garden to evaluate the morning light and choose the best locations.

That may sound like a small detail, but on proposal day it's incredibly valuable.

It allows us to stay in communication with our clients, confirm arrival times, send updated GPS pins if needed, and make last-minute adjustments before the proposal begins. In the middle of May, Arnold reached out to us looking for a photographer to capture a surprise proposal near the end of the month in Palm Springs.

After several phone calls and planning sessions, we came up with a different idea.

To help keep the proposal a complete surprise, we actually moved the proposal date forward to Memorial Day, May 25, throwing his girlfriend completely off the trail.

Once we finally found a space, our vehicle ended up nearly half a mile away from the proposal site.

A Sunset Cliffs Surprise Proposal That Almost Didn't Happen | Chris & Daniella's San Diego Proposal Story

When Chris first reached out to us in early April, his message was simple:

"Hey, my name is Chris. I'm looking to propose to my girlfriend while we're down in San Diego on April 25. Hoping we can plan something out."

The timeline was complete.

A few days before the proposal, Daniella came down with a cold. Rather than forcing the moment, Chris made the decision to postpone the proposal until she felt better.

Looking back, it was the right call.

A proposal only happens once, and it's worth waiting until both people can fully enjoy it.

Several weeks later, we picked up exactly where we left off and began preparing for their new June proposal date.

Our Sunset Cliffs Proposal Plan

One of the biggest reasons couples hire us isn't just for photography—it's because we help remove as much uncertainty as possible.

He would walk to the GPS location we'd already shared.

Steph and I would already be nearby blending into the scenery.

An Unexpected Challenge at Sunset Cliffs

As we always do, we arrived about an hour early.

Early arrival gives us time to scout the location, monitor lighting, and make adjustments before our clients arrive.

That habit ended up making all the difference.

The exact section of Sunset Cliffs where we'd originally planned for Chris to propose had recently been closed off with warning signs.

Months of heavy rain had caused noticeable cracks along the cliff edge, and portions of the area were considered unstable.

Instead of forcing the original plan, we immediately started looking for alternatives.

Fortunately, only a short walk away we found another overlook that offered nearly the same iconic Pacific Ocean backdrop while providing a much safer location.

We sent Chris an update before he arrived, explained the situation, and adjusted the GPS meeting point.

The proposal experience stayed exactly the same.

Only the location shifted a few yards.

Mother's Day Weekend Surprise Proposal at La Jolla Cove | JR & Michelle's Engagement Story

JR proposes to Michelle at La Jolla Seal Rock during a Mother's Day weekend trip from Las Vegas to San Diego. Captured as part of our Last Minute Yes proposal package, this oceanfront proposal featured stunning coastal views and family nearby to celebrate the moment.

One of the things we've learned after photographing hundreds of surprise proposals is that no proposal ever unfolds exactly the way you imagine it will.

And honestly?

That's usually what makes it memorable.

In late April, we received a message from JR asking if we were available to photograph his proposal to Michelle on May 9th in La Jolla.

We were already booked for a sunset proposal later that day, leaving only a morning or afternoon opening available.

After going back and forth on timing, we ultimately landed on a morning proposal.

Not only did it work better with JR's schedule, but anyone familiar with La Jolla Cove knows the lighting is often much more favorable in the morning. The crowds are lighter, the marine layer typically creates softer light, and the coastline has a calmness that's difficult to find later in the day.

Within the week, everything was booked and we began planning.

The proposal itself seemed simple enough.

JR and Michelle would be driving in from Las Vegas for Mother's Day weekend. JR had family in San Diego and told Michelle they were spending the day visiting relatives before exploring La Jolla Cove, Scripps Park, and the surrounding coastline.

The plan was straightforward.

They would casually walk through Scripps Park near La Jolla Cove.

We would "happen" to be nearby.

JR would ask us to take a photo of them on his phone.

We would then offer to take a few photos on our camera.

From there, we'd guide them into position and JR would propose.

Simple.

At least that's what we thought.

Some Trips Change Everything
JR and Michelle traveled from Las Vegas to La Jolla expecting a relaxing Mother's Day weekend by the ocean. By the end of the trip, they were engaged. The Reality of Proposing at La Jolla Cove

If you've ever visited La Jolla on a holiday weekend, especially Mother's Day weekend, you already know what's coming next.

Traffic.

Parking.

More traffic.

And somehow even less parking.

What should have been a relatively easy arrival quickly became a race against the clock.

Traffic entering La Jolla was significantly heavier than anticipated, pushing our target proposal time from 9:30 AM to nearly 10:00 AM.

Once we finally parked, Stephanie and I practically sprinted through La Jolla Cove to get into position.

Thankfully, JR's sister was helping coordinate behind the scenes and kept us updated throughout the morning.

Michelle's daughters were also there, helping keep things relaxed while everyone waited for us to get set up.

When JR and Michelle finally arrived, we spotted them taking photos near Scripps Park overlooking the ocean.

This was our cue.

We approached and offered to take a photo for them.

Michelle smiled politely and declined.

"Thank you though."

For a split second, Stephanie and I looked at each other.

This wasn't exactly how the script was supposed to go.

Fortunately, JR stepped in immediately.

"Let's have them take a few photos."

Crisis averted.

Honestly, he saved the day.

The Proposal at La Jolla Seal Rock

Once we started taking photos, everything settled into place.

The nerves disappeared.

The timing felt right.

The ocean sparkled behind them.

The sea lions could be heard in the distance near La Jolla Cove.

Tourists walked the coastline completely unaware that one of the biggest moments of someone's life was about to happen.

After a few photos, we guided JR and Michelle into position overlooking the water near La Jolla Seal Rock.

Then it happened.

JR got down on one knee.

Michelle immediately realized what was happening.

And she said yes.

The cheers from family nearby made the moment even more special.

Months of planning, anticipation, excitement, and nerves all led to this one question.

And one answer.

Exploring Scripps Park & La Jolla Cove After the Proposal

After the proposal, we spent the next hour exploring some of our favorite locations around La Jolla Cove.

We photographed along the coastal pathways.

Stopped near the cliffs overlooking Seal Rock.

Captured candid moments throughout Scripps Park.

And made our way around some of the most iconic ocean views in Southern California.

What always amazes us is how quickly these sessions go by.

One moment you're introducing yourself to complete strangers.

The next you're celebrating one of the biggest milestones of their lives.

Before you know it, the hour is over.

What Shooting 5 Surprise Proposals Over Memorial Day Weekend Taught Us

A newly engaged couple shares an emotional moment in Laguna Beach as the groom places the ring on his fiancée’s finger during a sunset surprise proposal overlooking the ocean on Memorial Day weekend.

Last year around this time, Steph and I had just launched Last Minute Photoshoot. We were barely getting traffic to the site — maybe 10–20 unique visitors a month. At the time, it felt exciting just seeing someone land on the homepage.

Memorial Day weekend last year looked completely different for us. We weren’t photographing surprise proposals yet. We packed up the car, brought our 3 pups down to San Diego, explored the coastline, drank coffee near the beach, and talked endlessly about what we hoped this business could eventually become.

Fast forward one year later.

This Memorial Day weekend, we photographed 5 surprise proposals across Southern California in 4 days.

From Joshua Tree… to La Jolla… to Pasadena… to Laguna Beach.

Somewhere between the long drives, hidden ring boxes, late-night edits, lack of sleep, beach parking chaos, carrying arches through crowded parks, and hearing strangers clap after the “yes,” we realized how much life can change in a year when you keep showing up consistently.

Every Proposal Taught Us the Same Thing — Preparation Changes Everything

The common thread is having a plan that adapts in real time. That’s where we come in: guiding the timing, flow, and details so you can stay focused on the moment instead of managing the pressure behind it.

Plan Your Surprise Proposal

Friday — Joshua Tree at Sunset

The weekend started in the desert.

Driving into Joshua Tree felt surreal. The roads slowly opened up into massive rock formations and warm desert light. The closer we got to golden hour, the more the landscape started glowing orange.

Before every proposal, we arrive early — usually hours early. We test lighting, scout angles, communicate with the client, and mentally walk through the timeline before anything happens.

Standing out there in the desert testing camera settings while the wind picked up slightly, it hit us again how wild this job really is. Someone trusted us to capture one of the biggest moments of their life in the middle of the desert.

That never gets old.

By the time the proposal happened, the entire sky had softened into warm gold tones. Quiet. Calm. Just the sound of wind moving through the desert and two people stepping into a completely new chapter of their lives.

Saturday Morning — La Jolla Cove

A few hours of sleep later, alarms started going off before sunrise.

Coffee in hand, camera batteries charging in the car, memory cards cleared from the night before, we drove into La Jolla for a morning proposal at the cove.

The energy shift from Joshua Tree to La Jolla was massive.

The sound of waves crashing against the cliffs. Sea lions barking in the distance. Tourists walking the coastline early in the morning. Marine layer hanging over the ocean.

Proposal photography teaches you how quickly environments can change — and how important it is to adapt calmly.

After the proposal, we spent part of the afternoon meeting another client visiting from Oakland for a proposal walkthrough. We walked the location together, talked through nerves, cover stories, proposal positioning, lighting, timing, backup plans, and every small detail leading up to the moment.

That preparation matters more than people realize.

Saturday Sunset — Gliderport in La Jolla

By sunset, we were carrying pieces of our Signature Yes setup through Gliderport while paragliders floated overhead.

Camera bags. Floral pieces. Candles. Tripods. Sandbags.

At times our car looked more like a mobile production van than a normal vehicle.

Holiday weekends add another layer of complexity to proposal photography. Parking becomes difficult. Beaches become crowded. Wind becomes unpredictable. Timelines tighten.

At one point we were holding florals down with one hand while checking lighting conditions with the other.

But when the proposal actually started, everything slowed down.

The crowds disappeared.
The stress disappeared.
The setup disappeared.

It became about the couple and the moment.

That’s always the goal.

Sunday Morning — The Huntington Library Proposal

Sunday morning came fast.

More coffee. More charging batteries. More loading gear into the car before sunrise.

This proposal at the The Huntington Library was especially memorable because we were operating completely undercover.

Under the guise of a family photoshoot with 3 kids… until it wasn’t.

We arrived early to scout the gardens and eventually found the perfect location inside the rose garden to quietly set up the proposal plan. One of the biggest parts of our job is blending in naturally without drawing attention.

Sometimes that means acting like tourists.
Sometimes it means pretending to photograph landscapes.
Sometimes it means blending into family sessions until the exact moment arrives.

The Huntington Library felt peaceful compared to the pace of the rest of the weekend. Sunlight filtered softly through the gardens, families walked quietly through the pathways, and for a few moments everything slowed down.

Then suddenly the proposal happened.

Shock.
Tears.
Smiles.
Excitement.

And just like that, another unforgettable memory was captured forever.

Memorial Day — Laguna Beach

By Memorial Day itself, exhaustion was definitely starting to hit.

But the second we arrived in Laguna Beach, adrenaline kicked back in.

This proposal involved our Signature Yes arch setup overlooking the ocean at Crescent Bay Park before moving down to the beach afterward for engagement photos at sunset.

Parking? Absolute chaos.

Holiday weekends in Laguna can test your patience quickly. Cars circling nonstop. Packed streets. Crowded overlooks. Tourists everywhere.

We had to drive around multiple times before eventually finding parking.

That’s one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned:
don’t panic when things aren’t immediately going your way.

Take a breath.
Stay patient.
Trust your preparation.

Eventually things usually fall into place.

As sunset approached, the stress melted away almost instantly. The sky turned soft orange and blue, waves crashed below the cliffs, and after the proposal we walked barefoot onto the beach capturing engagement photos as the last bit of sunlight disappeared behind the horizon.

And somehow after all the driving, setup, editing, timelines, parking, stress, and lack of sleep…

We’d do it all over again tomorrow.

What We’ve Learned About Navigating Busy Holiday Proposal Weekends

After photographing 5 proposals over 4 days, here are a few things we’ve learned that help us stay calm and prepared during high-pressure weekends:

Plan Every Detail Ahead of Time

We create timelines for every client and communicate constantly leading up to the proposal day.

We help with:

• self-care prep (hair, nails, etc.)

• GPS pins

• proposal spot photos

• walkthroughs when available

• lighting recommendations

• backup plans

By the proposal day, our goal is for the client to simply show up and enjoy the moment.

Stay Ready So You Never Have To Get Ready

One thing proposal photography teaches you quickly is that bookings can happen fast.

Several of our Memorial Day proposals came in within a week — some within 48 hours.

Every day we:

• charge cameras and flashes

• organize memory cards

• prep backup gear

• keep a full tank of gas

• restock setup supplies

• prepare the car for travel

In this line of work, preparation is everything.

Arrive Earlier Than You Think You Need To

If a proposal starts at 7 PM, we’ll often arrive around 5 PM.

That gives us time to:

• scout the location

• adjust for crowds

• setup decor

• test lighting

• communicate with the client

• mentally reset before the proposal starts

Rushing creates stress.
Preparation creates confidence.

Parking Requires Patience

Seriously.

Especially during holiday weekends.

Some of our biggest stress points this weekend had nothing to do with photography — it was parking.

But panic never helps.

Breathe.
Stay calm.
Keep circling if needed.

Eventually something opens up.

Visualize The Day Before It Happens

One thing that helps us tremendously is mentally visualizing the proposal before arriving.

Where will the client walk from?
Where will we stand?
How will lighting look?
What happens if crowds are heavy?
What’s the backup plan?

Visualization helps remove anxiety because your brain has already “seen” the scenario before it happens.

Respect The Location

A lot of proposal setups happen in public spaces surrounded by homes, beaches, cliffs, and parks.

We always:

He wanted to propose at the iconic The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch—one of the most vibrant and romantic proposal locations in San Diego County during spring and early summer.

By 1:00 PM that same day, he was officially booked.

That gave us just over 24 hours to plan, scout, coordinate, and execute one of the most important moments of his life.

With limited time, we moved fast:

Because Steph and I had photographed at the flower fields before, we already knew something most people don’t realize:

The Proposal: Finding the Right Moment in a Busy Setting

We aimed for a 4:00 PM proposal—giving us enough light while avoiding peak congestion.

When we arrived, it was busy… just like expected.

So we adjusted.

Instead of staying near the entrance, we moved toward the far left side of the fields, where the rows opened up and the crowds thinned.

Then it all unfolded naturally:

• Juan and Vanessa were taking selfies

• Then asked if they wanted one on our camera

Andy came to us in late March with a clear goal: keep it natural, keep it private, and make sure Carmen never sees it coming. Clean, believable, and it gives us full control of the moment.

So we ran it back.

We positioned ourselves as a content team working with a local winery, offering casual photos to guests. Andy relayed that to Carmen, and just like that—everything felt normal to her.

No pressure. No suspicion. Just a day wine tasting with friends.

The Location Pivot (and Why It Mattered)

Originally, we had our eyes on Vitagliano. But like most Saturdays in Temecula during spring… booked solid.

So we pivoted.

We looked at:

• Churon

• Ponte

• Europa Village

• Carter Estate

And then we found it.

That heart-shaped arch at Falkner Winery?
That was the spot.

Open lawn, clean backdrop, rolling hills behind it—it gave us control, visibility, and a natural reason for guests to walk up and take photos.

We did a full walkthrough, mapped everything out step-by-step, and confirmed no weddings or private events that day. Green light.

Game Plan (Before Anyone Showed Up)

• Carmen + her friends (including Maggie) → wine tasting, casual day

• Andy + his friends → arrive separately, hidden on standby

• Us → blend in, shoot “content,” build trust with the environment

We coordinated with Maggie for timing and positioning. Everyone had a role.

The Execution

Day of—busy winery.

Perfect.

More people = easier to disappear.

We showed up early, started shooting the crowd, the views, the vibe. Nothing forced. Just enough to sell the story.

Carmen and her group were enjoying themselves, completely relaxed. Andy arrived shortly after and stayed hidden while we set the stage.

We texted Maggie:
“We’re heading to the arch.”

Carmen and the girls walked up naturally, started taking selfies. That’s our cue.

Stephanie steps in casually:
“Hey, do you guys want some photos?”

They say yes.

Now we’re in control.

The Almost Slip

While Stephanie was posing the group, I sprinted to the parking lot, grabbed Andy and his friends, and moved them into position behind the building.

Timing had to be exact.

At one point, Carmen almost turned around early.

We had to improvise—fast.

We blended in with another group nearby, let them know what was happening. They played along without hesitation. That bought us just enough time.

We repositioned.
Reset.

The Moment

Stephanie turns Carmen toward the hills.

I give Andy the signal.

He moves in.

Carmen turns around—

And everything stops.

Shock. Confusion. Then it hits.

Andy’s on one knee. Ring out.

No distractions. No noise. Just them.
