We had less than a week to plan the proposal, map out the location, and secure approval from the Mission to photograph on the grounds. As visitors explored the Mission’s gardens, archways, and courtyards, we quietly waited for the moment.

When Eddie and Alicia finally arrived, we had one quick task — letting a few people nearby know a proposal was about to happen so we could create a little space for the moment. Everyone around us was incredibly supportive and happily stepped aside once they realized what was about to unfold.

Every now and then, not all of our leads come from the website. Sometimes it’s a text, a phone call, or even a quick DM. On a Tuesday afternoon, we got one of those messages from Ricardo — he wanted help finding a unique, meaningful location for a surprise proposal in the Inland Empire. By that evening, we had narrowed it down to something cooler, more historic, and full of character: The Mission San Juan Capistrano in Orange County.

We’d never shot here before, so naturally, we were excited. A new location means new inspiration — and new stories to tell.

Planning the Perfect Last-Minute Proposal

We had only a few days to map everything out — the backstory, the timeline, and the master plan. Ricardo already had a clear vision and came prepared with ideas, which made planning fast and smooth. After a few DMs back and forth and one final phone call the day before, everything was locked in.

Since the only time Ricardo could pull it off was Friday morning at 10 a.m., we knew it’d be an early start. When we’re booked for a weekday morning shoot, prep begins the night before: checking batteries, cleaning lenses, filling the gas tank, and packing backup gear. We’ve both had nightmares about running late to a proposal shoot — and trust us, it’s not happening on our watch.

By sunrise, we were on the road from Riverside County, excited for our first shoot at the Mission.

Arriving at the Mission San Juan Capistrano

The Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of the oldest and most beautiful historic landmarks in California. Founded in 1776, it’s known for its Spanish colonial architecture, stone archways, bell towers, and blooming gardens. The surrounding area feels like stepping back in time — cobblestone paths, adobe walls, and a calm energy that instantly makes you want to slow down and take it all in.

Once the Mission opened, we explored the grounds. The Sacred Garden immediately stood out — it was peaceful, romantic, and just what Ricardo envisioned for the proposal. We confirmed the lighting, checked angles, and texted Ricardo updates to make sure everything was set.

The Plan (and the Unexpected Twist)

The setup was simple: Daisy and her sister, Ilene, were visiting the Mission under the impression that Daisy was going to model for a marketing photoshoot. Ricardo would “show up” at a specific time to surprise her and propose. Everything was lining up perfectly — until it wasn’t.

Just minutes before the proposal, we were approached by the Mission staff asking what we were doing. Turns out, we didn’t realize that a photography permit is required for professional shoots at the Mission. The staff were polite but firm about the policy. Our hearts dropped. This was one of those moments where quick thinking and calm under pressure mattered most.

We had to pivot fast. While staff kept an eye on us, we found a new location that had decent lighting and a clean backdrop. Steph and I guided Ricardo quietly into position, hidden from Daisy and her sister. The energy was intense — it honestly felt like a movie scene. Ricardo took a deep breath, ran up to Daisy, got down on one knee, and the world went quiet.

She said yes.

Capturing the Moment (Despite the Chaos)

The moment was raw, emotional, and beautifully imperfect — and that’s what made it real. After the proposal, we decided to take a chance and move to the Sacred Garden, the spot Ricardo originally wanted. We got the shots we needed quickly, working around the situation as best we could. The results were stunning — golden light filtering through the arches, emotion written all over their faces.

We don’t recommend doing this without a permit (lesson learned!), but in hindsight, this proposal will always stand out as one of the most memorable. Sometimes, when things don’t go exactly as planned, that’s where the best stories are born.
