CJ & Dessa’s Balboa Park Proposal — A Storytelling Engagement Session in San Diego

When CJ first reached out to us in early November through our online submission form—“Hello, I’m interested in discussing a proposal package”—we had no idea we were about to plan one of the most thoughtful and creativity-filled surprise proposals we’ve had the honor of photographing in San Diego.

By 8 PM that evening, we were already on a call diving into everything: availability, ideas, cover stories, their backstory, and what he envisioned for the big moment. The original plan was an early November proposal, but weather pushed us back a week. In the end, the delay was perfect—it gave us time to craft something even more meaningful.

We spent a few hours walking through the park with him—laughing, talking, learning about their nicknames, memorable dates, the little stories that shape who they are. It was actually our first time doing an in-person walkthrough with a proposal client, and we instantly saw the value. Together we planned the full route:

The Cover Story — “We Met at a Conference”

To keep CJ’s surprise airtight, we told Dessa that we met CJ at a conference and, since we were shooting in the area, we asked if they’d be open to modeling for us.

Not an easy white lie—but a necessary one.

We met them at the café near the Japanese Friendship Garden. They arrived looking incredible:

• CJ in a sharp navy tailored suit

Their chemistry made the session effortless. We captured candid moments as we moved through each location—laughs, glances, the soft in-between moments that often become clients’ favorite photos.

The Proposal at Lily Pond

When we reached the Lily Pond, everything we had planned came together.
CJ took the cue.
He turned to Dessa.
And the moment unfolded beautifully.

She said yes.

And the surprises weren’t over.

Hidden under CJ’s button-down and suit jacket was a shirt reading “Will You Marry Me?”
He gifted Dessa a matching “I Said Yes” shirt for the engagement photos. The joy on their faces said everything.

A Scavenger Hunt — Honoring Their Early Date

CJ & Dessa’s first date ever was at Balboa Park involving geotag scavenger hunting, where they searched for small treasures hidden around the park.

We wanted to honor that memory.

So the final part of their engagement session became a custom scavenger hunt. We crafted a rustic-style note, burned the edges, and wrote a riddle:

“Our story began with a trail of clues, each one leading me closer to you.
Some search the world for treasure or fame,
but the day our paths crossed, I struck gold in your name.
Here where the petals shine like the love I keep,
rest a lock meant for your key—a promise I vowed to keep.”

Earlier that day, we buried a gold locket and key under one of the rose bushes.
They followed the clue.
They found the treasure.
And they shared a bottle of Martinelli’s as the sun dipped behind the garden.

This proposal was a true collaboration—calls, planning sessions, a walkthrough, scavenger hunt clues, hidden treasures, location scouting, and genuine connection.

CJ put so much heart into creating a meaningful moment, and Dessa’s reaction made every ounce of preparation worth it.

At the time, we were already on a photoshoot. Steph was snapping away, fully locked in, and in between moments when I wasn’t needed, I replied back. We let Matthew know we were already booked on the 12th, but had availability the following day — Saturday, December 13th.

Without hesitation, he said yes.

Matthew and Mahak were flying in from Milwaukee and were only in San Diego for a few short days. This wasn’t just a trip — it was the trip. After a few messages back and forth, we finalized the details and shifted into planning mode.

The days leading up to the proposal were all about intention.

We walked through:

Eventually, we made eye contact.

A Surprise Proposal in San Diego — Raul & Diana’s Beautiful At-Home Celebration

Last Tuesday, a simple DM set everything in motion:
“Hi, I’m proposing this Saturday afternoon. Available?”

It was Raul — excited, nervous, and determined to plan something unforgettable for Diana. We responded right away, asked about location and timing, and spent the next couple of days fine-tuning the details. By Thursday, everything was locked in. Raul booked with us, and the vision for his surprise proposal in San Diego was officially underway.

What made this one truly special was the setting — the front yard of Raul’s home, transformed into a romantic scene with the help of his closest friends and family. When we arrived early (as we always do), we were greeted with so much warmth. A huge shoutout to Bernice and Timmy for making our arrival feel like we were stepping into a friend’s home. Their kindness, hospitality, and genuine excitement set the tone for the entire day.

The setup was stunning: a balloon arch rising above a bold red carpet, rose petals creating a soft pathway, candles lining the edges, and a glowing “Marry Me” sign anchoring the entire moment. The planner and decorators — Raul’s good friends — were busy perfecting every detail. We checked the lighting, mapped out our positions, and even jumped in to help with the setup (they happily put us to work!).

Once everything was ready, all we had to do was wait.

When Raul and Diana arrived, the energy shifted. We started documenting immediately — capturing them stepping out of the car, walking down the red carpet, and taking in the surprise setup. Raul delivered a heartfelt speech, dropped to one knee, and Diana’s reaction said everything. It was emotional, beautiful, and real.

Then came the second surprise.

The front door swung open, and all of Raul’s friends and family poured out, cheering, celebrating, and surrounding the newly engaged couple with love. Champagne was popped, hugs were everywhere, and the celebration transitioned inside where Raul had arranged live musicians and an incredible spread of food.

Back in early June, we received a message through our website from someone named Carlos. He had stumbled upon one of our blogs about surprise proposal photography in Temecula and reached out with a big idea. After a quick chat the next day, we knew right away this was going to be a special one.

Even before officially booking us, Carlos was already brainstorming ideas with us. We started building out a plan together—storyboarding different scenarios, researching winery options, and contacting a handful of venues on his behalf. After narrowing it down to two locations, we landed on Vitagliano Winery in Temecula. Not only is it stunning, but their team was incredibly kind and accommodating from start to finish.

The Cover Story

To keep the surprise alive, we built a little story together. Carlos told Isabella that Vitagliano had hired photographers (us!) to take candid shots of guests enjoying the grounds for their social media. The idea? Blend into the winery crowd, casually snap content, and wait for golden hour to strike.

When the big day came, we arrived early to scout the location and make sure everything was in place. Around 5 p.m., Carlos and Isabella showed up, and the “tour” began. A golf cart (a.k.a. their chariot) whisked us all around the vineyard while we played our part—chatting, snapping candids, and pretending like it was just another day on assignment.

From Tastings to The Yes

We wrapped up the tour at the winery’s restaurant, where Carlos and Isabella enjoyed a mini tasting. We then gave them space, telling them we had to go photograph other guests (aka keep the act going). As we wandered, we texted Carlos updates—letting him know when and where to meet us.

Just before golden hour, we reunited for what Isabella thought were more “social media photos.” We captured a few beautiful candids before leading them down to the dock. And then, the moment happened.

Carlos got down on one knee, and Isabella’s smile lit up the entire vineyard.

The Afterglow

We spent the next 30 minutes photographing the newly engaged couple, capturing every joyful moment and all that post-YES magic. Before we wrapped, we made our way back to the restaurant, where we shared a celebratory glass of wine with them. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
