If you're imagining huge elevated cliffs and panoramic coastline views, we'd probably steer you toward the La Jolla Gliderport instead.

Windansea makes a lot of sense.

About Windansea Beach

Windansea Beach sits along Neptune Place in La Jolla and is one of the area's best-known surfing beaches.

The coastline combines sand, sandstone formations, reefs, bluffs, waves, and the historic Surf Shack.

Windansea also has a long connection to San Diego surf culture. The beach is known for its reef break and attracts experienced local surfers throughout the year.

That's part of the character of this location.

Don't expect an empty, perfectly manicured resort beach.

You'll probably see surfboards.

People sitting on the rocks.

Locals watching the waves.

Couples enjoying sunset.

And plenty of surfers in the water.

For us, that's part of what makes Windansea feel like La Jolla.

Where Is Windansea Beach?

Windansea is located along Neptune Place near Bonair Street in La Jolla, California. The beach extends north and south from this area, with the famous Surf Shack and primary surf area nearby.

If you're coming from elsewhere in San Diego, you'll generally make your way toward La Jolla Boulevard before heading west toward Neptune Place.

For a surprise proposal, we'd recommend saving your exact meeting point or GPS pin beforehand rather than simply typing "Windansea Beach" into your phone and assuming everyone will arrive at the same place.

That's especially important when your photographer needs to remain discreet.

Parking at Windansea Beach

This is something we'd plan for.

There is a very small parking area along Neptune Place around the Bonair Street area, but don't build your proposal timeline around getting one of those spaces.

A local Windansea guide counts only about 16 spaces in the small lot. Nearby residential street parking is another option, although finding a space can take longer during busy periods. (Go Visit San Diego)

Our recommendation:

Arrive early.

If your proposal is at 6:30 PM, don't pull into La Jolla at 6:20 PM.

Give yourself enough time to:

Park.

Walk.

Text your photographer if necessary.

Settle down.

And casually make your way toward the proposal location.

The last thing we want is someone walking toward one of the biggest moments of their life while repeatedly checking the clock.

Check the Tide Before You Propose

This is one of our biggest Windansea tips:

Check the tide report.

Windansea's beach and rocky shoreline can look very different depending on the tide and surf.

Lower water can expose more shoreline and rocky areas.

Higher tides and larger surf can reduce usable space and change how easily you can move around parts of the beach.

That's important for both the proposal and your engagement photographs afterward.

You can check Windansea tide predictions through Surfline's Windansea Tide Calendar.

Surfline's Windansea tide information uses the nearby La Jolla/Scripps Pier tide station and displays predicted high and low tides along with sunrise and sunset information.

We'd check it while planning and then check it again as proposal day approaches.

Don't assume the beach you saw in someone's photograph will look exactly the same when you arrive.

The ocean decides that.

Windansea Is a Surf Beach

Windansea isn't simply a pretty backdrop.

It's a legitimate surf spot.

San Diego's tourism information describes Windansea as a well-known reef break that attracts local surfers, and the break can be crowded when conditions are good.

For proposal photography, we actually like this.

Surfers can give photographs a sense of place.

A board under someone's arm in the distance.

People sitting on the rocks watching the waves.

Surfers waiting beyond the break.

It feels like Southern California.

But it also means we need to work around other people rather than expecting the entire beach to belong to us.

When Is the Best Time to Propose at Windansea?

For us?

Sunset.

The sunsets here can be unreal.

Because you're looking directly toward the Pacific, you can get beautiful evening light across the ocean, rocks, sand, and shoreline.

We generally like having the actual proposal happen before the sun completely disappears.

That leaves enough time afterward for:

The initial reaction.

Hugs.

Ring photographs.

A few candid moments.

Then a short engagement session while we chase the remaining light.

We don't want the proposal happening at the exact minute listed as sunset.

By then, we're already losing valuable photography time.

How Early Before Sunset Should You Propose?

A good starting point is often around 30 to 60 minutes before sunset, depending on the season, tide, weather, marine layer, and the length of your photography session.

For example, if we're planning a one-hour proposal session, we might have the proposal happen earlier and spend the remaining time moving around Windansea for engagement portraits.

Every proposal is different.

That's why we prefer building timelines around the specific date rather than using one generic time for every client.

What About the Marine Layer?

This is coastal San Diego.

Sometimes you're expecting an explosive orange sunset and the marine layer rolls in.

That doesn't mean your photographs are ruined.

Cloud cover can create soft, even lighting that's beautiful for portraits.

What we'd avoid is planning the emotional experience around one exact weather outcome.

You're proposing beside the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla.

If we get an incredible sunset?

Even better.

Where Should You Actually Propose at Windansea?

We wouldn't choose one universal spot.

Conditions change.

The tide changes.

The number of people changes.

Surf changes.

And light changes throughout the year.

Instead, we'd scout the beach and look for a location that gives us:

The historic Surf Shack is one of Windansea's most recognizable features.

It can absolutely be incorporated into your engagement photographs.

But we wouldn't automatically make it the proposal spot simply because it's famous.

It's also near a popular surfing area.

There may be people around.

Instead, we might use the shack as part of the overall visual story and choose a nearby area with a cleaner background for the actual proposal.

The proposal should come first.

The landmark comes second.

Wear Shoes You Can Actually Walk In

Windansea isn't a flat hotel lawn.

You'll encounter sand.

Rocks.

Uneven surfaces.

Steps and beach access.

Depending on the tide, moving around may require more care.

But we'd think carefully about footwear for the beach portion.

If you want the proposal centered around sand, rocks, waves, surfers, and sunset, we'd give Windansea serious consideration.

What About Proposal Décor?

Before bringing floral arches, candles, signs, furniture, picnics, or other décor onto any public beach, verify current City of San Diego rules and determine whether your specific activity requires permission.

Regulations can change, and different setups can be treated differently.

For Windansea specifically, we actually think simple works beautifully.

The ocean and sandstone formations already give you a strong backdrop.

You don't necessarily need to compete with it.

Engagement Photos After the Proposal

This is one of Windansea's strengths.

Once your partner says yes, we don't have to pack everyone into a car and drive somewhere else.

We can immediately start photographing around:

The shoreline.

Sandstone formations.

Beach.

One reason we like Windansea is that you're already in La Jolla.

You don't need the proposal to be the only activity.

You could spend the afternoon exploring La Jolla, grab coffee, browse shops, or have something to eat before making your way toward the coast.

La Jolla Boulevard has cafés, restaurants, shops, and neighborhood businesses near the Windansea/Bird Rock area.

For something casual close to Windansea, The Promiscuous Fork sits on La Jolla Boulevard, while Rosemonts Cafe and Café Vahik are nearby options for coffee or something earlier in the day.

That gives you an easy cover story:

Spend time around La Jolla.

Then suggest watching sunset at Windansea.

Your partner doesn't need to know what happens next.

Where Should You Celebrate Afterward?

After the proposal, you can stay around La Jolla and turn the evening into a complete date.

For a more celebratory dinner, options farther north around the Village include Georges at the Cove and Duke's La Jolla.

You could also keep things simple and find somewhere along La Jolla Boulevard.

Our preference?

Make the dinner reservation for after the proposal.

Then you're not sitting through dinner wondering whether your partner can see the ring box in your pocket.

How to Get to JW Marriott Desert Springs

If you're flying into the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is the closest major airport. Marriott lists the airport at approximately 12.2 miles from the resort.

If you're driving from the greater Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, or San Diego areas, build additional time into your proposal timeline.

Traffic can change quickly.

For a surprise proposal, we'd much rather see someone arrive 30 minutes early than be watching the sunset from Interstate 10 with an engagement ring in their pocket.

Parking at JW Marriott Desert Springs

One important detail to know beforehand:

Parking is not free.

As of 2026, Marriott currently lists:

Self-parking: $18 hourly or $29 daily

Valet parking: $45 daily

The property also has electric vehicle charging, including Tesla charging stations in the covered self-parking garage.

Parking prices can change, so we'd recommend checking directly with the resort shortly before your visit.

For proposals, we generally recommend building parking time directly into your timeline.

Don't plan to arrive at 6:00 PM for a 6:05 PM proposal.

You still need to park.

Walk through the property.

Possibly meet your photographer.

And get to the proposal location without looking like you're rushing somewhere.

Our Favorite Proposal Location: Flamingo Island

If we had to choose one area for a proposal at JW Marriott Desert Springs, Flamingo Island would be one of our first choices.

It's one of the features that makes this resort feel completely different from other Palm Desert proposal locations.

Flamingo Island is located near the 16th tee of the Palm Course, where the resort's famous pink flamingos live nearby.

From a photography perspective, you can incorporate:

• Flamingos

• Water

• Palm trees

• Greenery

• Desert scenery

• Mountain views

• Sunset light

The combination creates photographs that immediately feel like Palm Desert.

It's also completely different from proposing in the open desert at Joshua Tree.

Joshua Tree feels rugged and adventurous.

Flamingo Island feels polished, tropical, and resort-oriented.

Neither is better.

They're simply different experiences.

Other Places to Consider Around the Resort

Flamingo Island isn't your only option.

That's one of JW Marriott Desert Springs' biggest advantages.

Depending on lighting, crowds, resort activity, and what kind of proposal you want, other landscaped areas around the waterways and property may work beautifully.

When we scout a proposal here, we're looking for several things:

Privacy

Can you have a genuine moment without dozens of people walking directly behind you?

Lighting

Where will the sun actually be when you propose?

Background

Are we photographing mountains, water, palm trees, the resort, or a combination?

Approach

Can we naturally get you into position without making your partner suspicious?

Exit route

Where do we go immediately afterward for engagement photos?

Those details matter more than simply choosing the prettiest location on Google Images.

Use the Boat Ride as Part of the Proposal Experience

One of the most unique activities at JW Marriott Desert Springs is its boat experience.

The resort offers boat tours through its waterways, which can become part of the proposal story rather than simply transportation.

For photography, we generally prefer late afternoon through sunset.

The exact timing changes throughout the year.

In summer, sunsets happen much later.

In winter, you'll need to plan significantly earlier.

Our preference is often to have the actual proposal happen roughly 30-60 minutes before sunset.

That gives you time to enjoy the proposal and still use the remaining golden-hour light for engagement portraits.

However, there's another major factor in Palm Desert:

Heat.

Summer temperatures can be intense.

If you're proposing during the warmer months, avoiding the middle of the afternoon can make the experience significantly more comfortable.

Your proposal should feel romantic.

Not like you're both trying to survive the desert.

Turn the Proposal Into a Full Date

One of the strongest reasons to choose JW Marriott Desert Springs is everything available before and after the proposal.

You don't necessarily need to leave the property.

And that's exactly why we'll remember it.

Mohamed first reached out to us in early July looking for help planning and photographing a surprise proposal on August 7.

The date had initially been held for another client, but when that booking fell through, we were able to officially confirm August 7 for Mohamed.

From there, the planning began.

Mohamed's original vision sent us searching for the perfect mountain backdrop, but after comparing locations, walking the resort, and scouting the possibilities, Flamingo Island at JW Marriott Desert Springs became the setting for his unforgettable "yes" with Jenny. Plan Your Palm Springs Proposal

Finding the Right Proposal Location

One of the first things we do after a couple books with us is send over our proposal questionnaire.

We don't want to simply ask:

Where do you want to propose?

We want to understand what you're actually envisioning.

What kind of scenery do you want?

Do you want privacy?

Do you want family involved?

Are you looking for something adventurous, elegant, intimate, or completely unexpected?

Mohamed knew one thing for sure:

He wanted beautiful mountain views.

That gave us a starting point.

We considered several Southern California proposal locations, including:

• Joshua Tree National Park

• Idyllwild

• Coachella Valley Vista Point

• Palm Desert

Each offered something completely different.

Joshua Tree gave us dramatic desert landscapes.

Idyllwild offered mountains, pine forests, and a completely different atmosphere.

The Coachella Valley overlooks gave us expansive desert and mountain views.

But eventually, we found an option that combined the desert, mountains, water, palm trees, and an experience we could build into the proposal itself.

Why We Chose JW Marriott Desert Springs

The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa feels completely different from what many people imagine when they think about the Palm Springs area.

Instead of only desert landscapes, the property combines towering palm trees, waterways, lakes, landscaped grounds, mountain views, and the resort's famous pink flamingos.

The resort sits on approximately 450 acres in Palm Desert and includes five outdoor pools, two championship golf courses, a spa, restaurants, gardens, waterways, and boat tours that travel through the property.

For a proposal, that variety gives you something extremely valuable:

Options.

You can create one experience around the proposal itself and then have several completely different backgrounds available for engagement photos afterward.

For Mohamed, one location immediately stood out.

Flamingo Island.

Water.

Palm trees.

Flamingos.

Desert mountains in the distance.

It gave us the romantic setting he wanted without having to drive deep into the desert.

Now we needed to figure out exactly how to pull it off.

We Don't Like Going Into Proposal Day Blind

This is where a lot of the work happens that clients never see.

A surprise proposal isn't just another photoshoot for us.

For the person proposing, this could be one of the biggest days of their life.

We take that seriously.

Before Mohamed's proposal, Stephanie and I drove out to Palm Desert ourselves.

We walked the resort.

We visited Flamingo Island.

We studied the pathways.

We looked at the light.

We considered where Mohamed and Jenny should approach from.

We looked for areas where we could photograph them without immediately giving ourselves away.

And most importantly, we developed backup options in case our original plan wasn't possible on proposal day.

Scouting isn't always glamorous.

But we'd rather spend extra time preparing beforehand than have a client standing somewhere on proposal day wondering:

Where am I supposed to go?

Turning an Idea Into an Actual Proposal Plan

Once we'd seen the resort ourselves, everything became much easier to visualize.

We started building Mohamed's final plan.

The idea was to incorporate the resort's boat experience into the day.

Mohamed and Jenny could enjoy the resort together while Stephanie and I quietly photographed a few candid moments from a distance.

After the boat ride, we'd move ahead of them toward Flamingo Island.

Then we'd blend into the environment like any other couple taking photographs around the resort.

When Mohamed and Jenny approached, we'd casually ask if they could take a photo of us.

Then we'd return the favor.

That would naturally put Mohamed and Jenny exactly where we needed them without Jenny realizing what was about to happen.

Simple.

Natural.

And most importantly:

It wouldn't feel staged.

The Final Proposal Timeline

As August 7 approached, we finalized every detail.

Mohamed received a complete proposal timeline so he knew how the evening would unfold.

We also sent him a proposal checklist covering the things he needed to remember before leaving.

Then we sent our proposal FYI, covering the little logistical details that are easy to forget when you're thinking about an engagement ring and one very important question.

Before proposal day, we scheduled one final call.

We walked through everything again.

Arrival.

Timing.

Boat ride.

Where we'd be.

Where he'd be.

The approach.

The cue.

The proposal.

By the time we finished the call, everyone knew the plan.

Now we just needed proposal day to cooperate.

Proposal Day at JW Marriott Desert Springs

When August 7 finally arrived, Stephanie and I headed to Palm Desert early.

We never want the first time we're seeing the conditions to be when our client is already walking toward us.

Arriving early gives us time to evaluate the light, crowds, weather, and anything else that might have changed since scouting.

Everything looked good.

Mohamed and Jenny arrived.

And the plan went into motion.

We boarded the boat and started capturing discreet candid photographs of them enjoying the resort together.

For Jenny, it was simply part of their evening.

For us, the clock was already running in our heads.

Because once we got off that boat, we needed to get to Flamingo Island before they did.

Easy enough.

At least that's what we thought.

And Then We Got Off at the Wrong Stop

Weeks of preparation.

Multiple planning conversations.

A scouting trip.

A finalized timeline.

Everything was going perfectly.

Until Stephanie and I got off the boat at the wrong drop-off.

We realized pretty quickly that we weren't where we needed to be.

And Mohamed and Jenny weren't going to wait for two photographers who couldn't figure out where they were.

So we ran.

Through the resort.

Toward Flamingo Island.

At one point, we even hopped over a fence.

The things we'll do not to be late.

But we made it.

That's what mattered.

Weeks of Planning Came Down to One Moment

We reached Flamingo Island before Mohamed and Jenny.

Not by much.

But enough.

We caught our breath.

Got into position.

And pretended nothing unusual had happened.

A few moments later, Mohamed and Jenny approached.

Exactly as planned, we casually walked over and asked if they could take a photo of us.

They did.

Then we offered to return the favor.

Everything we'd discussed over the previous weeks suddenly came down to this one moment.

We positioned them.

Stepped back.

And let Mohamed take over.

He turned toward Jenny.

He spoke to her.

Then he got down on one knee.

And asked:

"Will you marry me?"

One of our favorite things about photographing proposals at JW Marriott Desert Springs is the variety available without needing to leave the property.

Within a relatively small area, photographs can incorporate water, palm trees, flamingos, landscaped gardens, resort architecture, desert scenery, and the surrounding mountains.

That made the engagement session feel completely different from the proposal photographs even though everything happened at the same resort.

And after weeks of planning, phone calls, scouting, running through a resort, and hopping a fence...

Mohamed and Jenny were engaged.

Mission accomplished.

Mohamed's Feedback

Afterward, Mohamed sent us a message that meant a lot:

Jorge and Michelle's surprise proposal at La Jolla Gliderport was one of those stories.

Originally, Jorge had a completely different proposal planned.

Unfortunately, just days before he planned to ask one of the biggest questions of his life, an unexpected emergency forced him to cancel everything.

With his original plans no longer possible, he wasn't ready to give up on the proposal.

Instead, on July 10, he gave us a call asking if we had any availability for July 12.

His goal was simple.

He wanted to create an unforgettable surprise proposal for Michelle despite everything that had changed.

The challenge?

We had less than 48 hours to completely reimagine the experience.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Just Two Days

When Jorge first reached out, we were already booked earlier that afternoon photographing another surprise proposal at Balboa Park.

Fortunately, our evening was still available.

We suggested planning for a sunset proposal, giving us enough time to travel across San Diego and create the experience he envisioned.

Although the timeline was short, the biggest challenge wasn't the time—it was rebuilding a proposal after Jorge's original plans unexpectedly fell through.

Together, we focused on creating a new experience that felt intentional rather than rushed.

As we talked through ideas, we discussed several proposal locations before narrowing everything down to one of our favorite places in Southern California:

La Jolla Gliderport.

Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, La Jolla Gliderport is one of San Diego's most iconic proposal locations. Known for its soaring paragliders, dramatic sandstone cliffs, panoramic ocean views, and unforgettable sunsets, it's a place where every evening feels a little different. The combination of coastal scenery and open skies creates a setting that's both adventurous and romantic.

That evening we immediately got to work.

Earlier that afternoon, Steph and I were already photographing another surprise proposal at Balboa Park.

We wrapped up around 5:10 PM, packed our gear, and immediately headed toward La Jolla.

Fortunately, we'd already built enough travel time into our schedule.

Planning isn't just about the proposal itself.

It's about making sure every piece of the day flows smoothly.

By the time we arrived at La Jolla Gliderport, golden hour was beginning.

We parked in the far dirt parking lot and immediately started unloading equipment.

The "Marry Me" sign.

Rose petals.

Photography gear.

Trip after trip back to the car.

By the end of setup, we had definitely earned our steps for the day.

Every trip was worth it.

As the sun slowly lowered toward the Pacific Ocean, everything finally came together.

By 7:00 PM, the setup was complete.

We sent Jorge a message letting him know we were ready.

Guiding Jorge to the Proposal Location

Because it was Jorge's first time proposing at La Jolla Gliderport, we didn't want him worrying about finding the exact location.

I met him near the beginning of the trail so there wouldn't be any confusion.

After making visual contact, I quietly guided him closer to the proposal site before stepping aside.

From there, the moment belonged entirely to them.

The Moment Michelle Said Yes

Jorge reached for Michelle's hand as they followed the trail lined with rose petals.

Waiting ahead was the floral arch overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

It All Started with a Message

On May 6, Joseph reached out to us asking if we were available to photograph his surprise proposal at Griffith Observatory on June 24.

We replied immediately, letting him know we were available while asking a few questions to better understand his vision.

One thing stood out immediately.

He wanted his children to be part of one of the biggest moments of his life.

Rather than simply photographing the proposal, Joseph wanted to create a memory his entire family could look back on for years to come.

We loved the idea.

Sometimes Plans Change—And That's Okay

As planning continued, life happened.

Joseph's timeline shifted, and instead of proposing in late June, he decided to move everything up to May 24, right in the middle of Memorial Day weekend.

To say we were busy would be an understatement.

Leading into Memorial Day weekend, Stephanie and I already had four surprise proposals scheduled, with several more sessions immediately afterward.

We always joke with each other...

"Love doesn't stop for anyone."

Behind every proposal is a lot more than simply showing up with cameras.

Every proposal we photograph includes planning, timeline creation, scouting, communication, backup plans, GPS pins, proposal cues, and logistics. During busy holiday weekends, those plans become even more important as we're often traveling across Southern California on very little sleep while making sure every couple still receives the same experience we'd want if it were our own proposal.

No matter how busy the calendar gets, one thing never changes.

Why We Moved the Proposal

Originally, Joseph planned to propose at Griffith Observatory.

As Memorial Day weekend approached, several wildfires were active throughout Los Angeles County, creating smoky skies and triggering air quality advisories across parts of the region.

Although Griffith Observatory remained an incredible location, we didn't feel those conditions would create the best experience for Joseph and his family.

Rather than hoping conditions improved, we began discussing alternatives.

That's when we recommended The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in nearby San Marino.

Being farther inland, Huntington offered noticeably clearer skies, better air quality, and a more comfortable environment for spending several hours outdoors with the kids.

Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we could have made.

One thing many first-time visitors don't realize is that Lacy Park's parking lot is relatively small.

On weekdays, finding a space is usually much easier.

However, weekends can become busy with families, birthday celebrations, sports activities, and community events.

If the main parking lot fills up, street parking is available along the surrounding residential streets, with only a short walk into the park.

Arrive at least 30–45 minutes early so you can relax, avoid rushing, and enjoy the experience together.

Not only does it provide plenty of shade and open space, but it's also located near the park's iconic white wooden pergola overlooking the beautiful rose garden.

Before becoming a public park in 1925, the property was part of an estate, and remnants of that history can still be found throughout the grounds.

Unlike many parks in Los Angeles, Lacy Park feels calm.

Whenever we photograph somewhere new, one of the first things we do is arrive early.

Normally, if a location is within driving distance of another session, we'll scout it days beforehand. Since Lacy Park was farther from our usual Southern California route, we planned extra time on the day of the session to explore the park ourselves.

We walked nearly every path.

Studied how the light filtered through the towering trees.

Looked for quieter areas away from foot traffic.

And searched for backgrounds that felt timeless.

One feature immediately stood out.

The beautiful historic pillar walls that once marked the entrance to the original estate.

The architecture added an elegant, almost European feel that contrasted beautifully with the surrounding greenery.

After a few conversations, we landed on a proposal at the Pavilion inside Balboa Park, followed by an engagement session around Alcazar Garden before finishing the evening with portraits at the Marriott in Downtown San Diego, where they were staying for the weekend.

A little while later, Jake, Devon, and their family arrived.

We made visual contact.

Part of proposal photography is adapting in real time.

I walked over and asked if they wanted a photo together.

They said yes.

I took a few photos for them.

From the outside, it simply looked like I was being a helpful stranger taking photos for another couple enjoying the sunset.

Meanwhile, Jake and Devon were making their way toward us.

As they approached, Jake asked if we could take a photo of them.

Of course.

We framed the shot.

They stood together overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Then Jake got down on one knee.

What most people don't see are the days and weeks leading up to those moments.

Before every proposal, wedding, or engagement session, there are phone calls, text messages, planning sessions, location scouting, timeline creation, GPS pins, backup plans, restaurant recommendations, and countless conversations behind the scenes.

Sometimes we're helping a client choose between Laguna Beach and La Jolla.

Other times we're scouting a new location we've never photographed before.

Behind every proposal, wedding, and engagement session is a story most people never see. This week included four surprise proposals, one wedding, one engagement session, thousands of photos, countless miles on the road, and a camera failure that happened minutes before a proposal. It was a reminder that photography isn't just about taking beautiful photos—it's about staying calm when things go sideways, adapting on the fly, and doing everything possible to deliver for the people who trusted us with some of the biggest moments of their lives.

The Proposal That Almost Didn't Happen

A few minutes before we were scheduled to photograph a surprise proposal at Seal Rock in La Jolla, our Sony A7 III stopped working.

No warning.

No strange noises.

Nothing.

Just a black screen.

The shutter was completely closed.

We removed the lens.

Removed the battery.

Removed the SD cards.

Waited.

Put everything back together.

Tried again.

Nothing.

Repeated the process.

Still nothing.

The black screen of death said it all.

If you're a photographer, you probably know the feeling.

Your stomach drops.

Your heart starts racing.

Your mind immediately starts trying to solve a problem that doesn't seem to have a solution.

The worst part?

We didn't have a backup camera.

That's on us.

We had photographed multiple sessions leading up to that day and had tested the camera beforehand. Everything was working perfectly.

Until it wasn't.

The Text Message Nobody Wants To Send

At first, I texted our client:

"Hey, give us a few minutes. We're having some technical difficulties."

He replied:

"No problem."

One minute turned into five.

Five minutes turned into ten.

Ten turned into twenty.

Then the text came:

"Are we good?"

I remember staring at my phone wondering how to even explain what was happening.

Finally, I sent the message.

"Hey, I'm not really sure how to say this, so I'm just going to be blunt. Our camera isn't working. We can photograph your proposal on our iPhone, and we'll offer a full refund."

A few moments later he replied:

"Okay. We'll figure out the refund later."

Then he walked out of the restaurant.

Our First Proposal Shot on an iPhone

This was a first for us.

As the client made his way toward Seal Rock, we positioned ourselves from a distance and started photographing with our iPhone.

We stayed undercover.

We blended into the environment.

And when the moment arrived, we captured it.

He got down on one knee.

She said yes.

The proposal happened.

The story continued.

Afterward, we all laughed about it.

But if we're being honest?

Steph and I were crushed inside.

We felt like we had let our clients down.

As photographers, you take pride in showing up prepared.

When something outside of your control affects a client experience, it's hard not to take it personally.

But we still had a job to do.

So we smiled.

We stayed positive.

We focused on creating the best experience possible.

Because at that point, the proposal wasn't about us.

It was about them.

We Found a Solution

After talking everything through, we gave our clients a few options.

A few days later we met up again and photographed their engagement photos.

Looking back, we're grateful the experience happened.

It definitely wasn't.

The moment we got home, we started looking for another camera body.

Now we have two cameras.

And moving forward, we'll always have two cameras with us.

Some lessons are expensive.

This was one of those lessons.

Believe it or not, the camera failure happened at the beginning of the week.

After that, we still had:

• 4 surprise proposals

• 1 engagement session

• 1 wedding

• A scouting trip to Lake Arrowhead for an upcoming proposal

• Countless client calls, texts, timelines, and planning sessions

It was one of the busiest weeks we've had in a while.

And one of the most memorable.

Why We Love What We Do

If we didn't genuinely love this job, a week like this probably would have crushed us.

Instead, it reminded us why we do it.

We get to witness some of the biggest moments in people's lives.

We get trusted with memories that can never be recreated.

We get invited into stories we'll never forget.

Even on the difficult days, that's a privilege we don't take lightly.
