From Mountain Views to Flamingo Island | Mohamed & Jenny's Surprise Proposal at JW Marriott Palm Desert
Weeks of planning came down to one unforgettable moment at JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert. Mohamed wanted mountain views for his surprise proposal to Jenny, so after considering Joshua Tree, Idyllwild, and other desert locations, we found the perfect setting at Flamingo Island. We scouted the resort beforehand, created a detailed timeline, planned a discreet boat ride and photographer approach, and prepared backup options. Even after getting off at the wrong boat stop and racing across the resort, everything came together. Mohamed asked Jenny to marry him, she said yes, and we spent the remaining sunset capturing their engagement among flamingos, palm trees, water, and desert scenery.
Weeks of planning.
Location scouting.
Backup plans.
A boat ride.
And, somehow, two photographers hopping over a fence and running through a resort trying not to miss the proposal we'd spent weeks preparing.
Mohamed and Jenny's surprise proposal at JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert had a little bit of everything.
And that's exactly why we'll remember it.
Mohamed first reached out to us in early July looking for help planning and photographing a surprise proposal on August 7.
The date had initially been held for another client, but when that booking fell through, we were able to officially confirm August 7 for Mohamed.
From there, the planning began.
And honestly? Sometimes that's exactly how the best proposal stories come together. Mohamed's original vision sent us searching for the perfect mountain backdrop, but after comparing locations, walking the resort, and scouting the possibilities, Flamingo Island at JW Marriott Desert Springs became the setting for his unforgettable "yes" with Jenny. Whether you know exactly where you want to propose or only know how you want the moment to feel, we'll help turn that first idea into a plan that works beautifully in real life.
Plan Your Palm Springs Proposal
Finding the Right Proposal Location
One of the first things we do after a couple books with us is send over our proposal questionnaire.
We don't want to simply ask:
Where do you want to propose?
We want to understand what you're actually envisioning.
What kind of scenery do you want?
Do you want privacy?
Do you want family involved?
Are you looking for something adventurous, elegant, intimate, or completely unexpected?
Mohamed knew one thing for sure:
He wanted beautiful mountain views.
That gave us a starting point.
We considered several Southern California proposal locations, including:
Joshua Tree National Park
Idyllwild
Coachella Valley Vista Point
Palm Desert
Each offered something completely different.
Joshua Tree gave us dramatic desert landscapes.
Idyllwild offered mountains, pine forests, and a completely different atmosphere.
The Coachella Valley overlooks gave us expansive desert and mountain views.
But eventually, we found an option that combined the desert, mountains, water, palm trees, and an experience we could build into the proposal itself.
JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert.
Why We Chose JW Marriott Desert Springs
The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa feels completely different from what many people imagine when they think about the Palm Springs area.
Instead of only desert landscapes, the property combines towering palm trees, waterways, lakes, landscaped grounds, mountain views, and the resort's famous pink flamingos.
The resort sits on approximately 450 acres in Palm Desert and includes five outdoor pools, two championship golf courses, a spa, restaurants, gardens, waterways, and boat tours that travel through the property.
For a proposal, that variety gives you something extremely valuable:
Options.
You can create one experience around the proposal itself and then have several completely different backgrounds available for engagement photos afterward.
For Mohamed, one location immediately stood out.
Flamingo Island.
Water.
Palm trees.
Flamingos.
Desert mountains in the distance.
It gave us the romantic setting he wanted without having to drive deep into the desert.
Now we needed to figure out exactly how to pull it off.
We Don't Like Going Into Proposal Day Blind
This is where a lot of the work happens that clients never see.
A surprise proposal isn't just another photoshoot for us.
For the person proposing, this could be one of the biggest days of their life.
We take that seriously.
Before Mohamed's proposal, Stephanie and I drove out to Palm Desert ourselves.
We walked the resort.
We visited Flamingo Island.
We studied the pathways.
We looked at the light.
We considered where Mohamed and Jenny should approach from.
We looked for areas where we could photograph them without immediately giving ourselves away.
And most importantly, we developed backup options in case our original plan wasn't possible on proposal day.
Scouting isn't always glamorous.
But we'd rather spend extra time preparing beforehand than have a client standing somewhere on proposal day wondering:
Where am I supposed to go?
Turning an Idea Into an Actual Proposal Plan
Once we'd seen the resort ourselves, everything became much easier to visualize.
We started building Mohamed's final plan.
The idea was to incorporate the resort's boat experience into the day.
Mohamed and Jenny could enjoy the resort together while Stephanie and I quietly photographed a few candid moments from a distance.
After the boat ride, we'd move ahead of them toward Flamingo Island.
Then we'd blend into the environment like any other couple taking photographs around the resort.
When Mohamed and Jenny approached, we'd casually ask if they could take a photo of us.
Then we'd return the favor.
That would naturally put Mohamed and Jenny exactly where we needed them without Jenny realizing what was about to happen.
Simple.
Natural.
And most importantly:
It wouldn't feel staged.
The Final Proposal Timeline
As August 7 approached, we finalized every detail.
Mohamed received a complete proposal timeline so he knew how the evening would unfold.
We also sent him a proposal checklist covering the things he needed to remember before leaving.
Then we sent our proposal FYI, covering the little logistical details that are easy to forget when you're thinking about an engagement ring and one very important question.
Before proposal day, we scheduled one final call.
We walked through everything again.
Arrival.
Timing.
Boat ride.
Where we'd be.
Where he'd be.
The approach.
The cue.
The proposal.
By the time we finished the call, everyone knew the plan.
Now we just needed proposal day to cooperate.
Proposal Day at JW Marriott Desert Springs
When August 7 finally arrived, Stephanie and I headed to Palm Desert early.
We never want the first time we're seeing the conditions to be when our client is already walking toward us.
Arriving early gives us time to evaluate the light, crowds, weather, and anything else that might have changed since scouting.
Everything looked good.
Mohamed and Jenny arrived.
And the plan went into motion.
We boarded the boat and started capturing discreet candid photographs of them enjoying the resort together.
For Jenny, it was simply part of their evening.
For us, the clock was already running in our heads.
Because once we got off that boat, we needed to get to Flamingo Island before they did.
Easy enough.
At least that's what we thought.
And Then We Got Off at the Wrong Stop
Weeks of preparation.
Multiple planning conversations.
A scouting trip.
A finalized timeline.
Everything was going perfectly.
Until Stephanie and I got off the boat at the wrong drop-off.
We realized pretty quickly that we weren't where we needed to be.
And Mohamed and Jenny weren't going to wait for two photographers who couldn't figure out where they were.
So we ran.
Through the resort.
Toward Flamingo Island.
At one point, we even hopped over a fence.
If anyone happened to see two photographers sprinting through the JW Marriott that evening...
Now you know why.
Sometimes proposal photography looks elegant.
Sometimes it looks like two people running through Palm Desert carrying camera equipment because we are absolutely not missing this moment.
The things we'll do not to be late.
But we made it.
That's what mattered.
Weeks of Planning Came Down to One Moment
We reached Flamingo Island before Mohamed and Jenny.
Not by much.
But enough.
We caught our breath.
Got into position.
And pretended nothing unusual had happened.
A few moments later, Mohamed and Jenny approached.
Exactly as planned, we casually walked over and asked if they could take a photo of us.
They did.
Then we offered to return the favor.
Everything we'd discussed over the previous weeks suddenly came down to this one moment.
We positioned them.
Stepped back.
And let Mohamed take over.
He turned toward Jenny.
He spoke to her.
Then he got down on one knee.
And asked:
"Will you marry me?"
Jenny said yes.
Weeks of preparation bottled into a few seconds.
That's the strange thing about surprise proposals.
You can spend hours scouting.
Days planning.
Weeks communicating.
And ultimately, everything exists to protect a moment that lasts only seconds.
That's why we prepare so much.
Because you don't get to recreate that reaction.
Engagement Photos Around Flamingo Island
After Jenny said yes, we gave them time to enjoy the moment before transitioning into a short engagement session.
We had roughly another 30 minutes of light.
So we did what photographers do best.
We chased it.
Around Flamingo Island.
Along the water.
Under the palm trees.
Through the landscaped areas surrounding the resort.
One of our favorite things about photographing proposals at JW Marriott Desert Springs is the variety available without needing to leave the property.
Within a relatively small area, photographs can incorporate water, palm trees, flamingos, landscaped gardens, resort architecture, desert scenery, and the surrounding mountains.
That made the engagement session feel completely different from the proposal photographs even though everything happened at the same resort.
And after weeks of planning, phone calls, scouting, running through a resort, and hopping a fence...
Mohamed and Jenny were engaged.
Mission accomplished.
Mohamed's Feedback
Afterward, Mohamed sent us a message that meant a lot:
"Thank you guys for everything, I love everything about y'all." — Mohamed
Short.
Simple.
And honestly, that's everything we hope a client feels after working with us.
Of course we want you to love your photographs.
But we also want you to look back and remember that the experience itself was fun.
What This Proposal Taught Us About Planning
Mohamed and Jenny's proposal reinforced something we've learned over and over again:
The more prepared you are beforehand, the more freedom you have when something goes wrong.
Our plan didn't work perfectly.
We got off at the wrong boat stop.
We had to improvise.
We had to run.
But none of that affected Mohamed's experience because the important parts had already been planned.
We knew the location.
We knew the route.
We knew where Flamingo Island was.
We knew the proposal cue.
We knew what Mohamed expected.
That's the difference between having a plan and simply hoping everything works.
Is JW Marriott Desert Springs a Good Place to Propose?
Based on our experience photographing Mohamed and Jenny's proposal, yes—especially if you want a Palm Desert proposal that combines mountain scenery with a polished resort environment.
It's particularly worth considering if you want:
Palm trees and desert mountain views
Water incorporated into your photographs
A resort experience before and after the proposal
Multiple engagement photo locations within one property
Flamingos as a unique Palm Desert backdrop
Restaurants and activities nearby
An alternative to hiking or driving into the open desert
One thing we'd strongly recommend is planning the exact proposal location and approach beforehand.
JW Marriott Desert Springs is a large property.
What looks simple on a map can feel very different when you're actually walking through the resort.
And as Stephanie and I learned...
You should probably know which boat stop you're getting off at.

Final Thoughts
Mohamed originally came to us looking for a proposal location with a beautiful mountain view.
That one request eventually led us to Flamingo Island at JW Marriott Desert Springs.
But the location was only part of the story.
What we'll remember most is everything that happened around those few seconds when Mohamed got down on one knee.
The questionnaire.
The location research.
The scouting trip.
The timelines.
The checklist.
The phone calls.
The boat ride.
Getting off at the wrong stop.
Running through the resort.
Hopping a fence.
And finally watching Jenny say yes.
That's why we love photographing proposals.
They're rarely perfect.
They're real.
And sometimes the unexpected parts become the stories you laugh about long after the photographs are delivered.
Mohamed and Jenny, thank you for trusting us with yours.
How to Choose the Right Surprise Proposal Photographer in Southern California (2026 Guide)
Choosing the right surprise proposal photographer is about more than finding someone with a great portfolio. It's about finding someone who can help you confidently plan one of the biggest moments of your life. In this 2026 guide, we share what we've learned after photographing surprise proposals across San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Temecula, and Catalina Island. Learn what questions to ask, what red flags to avoid, why local experience matters, and how planning, communication, and preparation can transform a proposal into a seamless, unforgettable experience.
Planning a surprise proposal is one of the most exciting moments of your life.
It's also one of the few moments you'll never get a second chance to recreate.
When you get down on one knee, your partner's reaction happens only once.
The laughter.
The happy tears.
The look of complete surprise.
Those moments deserve more than someone who simply knows how to use a camera.
They deserve someone who understands how to help create the experience from start to finish.
Over the past several years, we've helped couples plan and photograph surprise proposals throughout San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, Temecula, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park, Catalina Island, and many other destinations across Southern California.
Along the way we've learned something important.
The best surprise proposal photographers don't simply capture the moment.
They help create it.
If you're searching for the right surprise proposal photographer in Southern California, here's everything we'd recommend considering before making one of the most important decisions for your proposal.
The right proposal photographer does more than take beautiful photos—they help plan the experience, solve problems before they happen, and make sure the moment unfolds naturally. As you compare photographers, look beyond portfolios. Consider their experience with surprise proposals, local knowledge, communication, planning support, backup strategies, and ability to adapt when plans change. We'll help you choose the perfect location, create a personalized timeline, provide GPS pins, build a believable cover story, and discreetly capture every genuine reaction—so your proposal feels effortless from beginning to end.
Choose Your Proposal Experience
Not Every Photographer Specializes in Surprise Proposals
This might be the biggest misconception we see.
Many photographers take beautiful portraits.
Many photograph weddings.
Many offer engagement sessions.
But surprise proposals are completely different.
Proposal photography combines photography with planning, logistics, communication, timing, local knowledge, and the ability to adapt when plans unexpectedly change.
A proposal photographer should know how to:
Stay hidden naturally.
Build a believable cover story.
Scout locations before you arrive.
Coordinate with family and friends.
Read changing lighting conditions.
Adapt to weather or crowds.
Calm nervous clients.
Capture genuine reactions without interrupting the moment.
Photography is only one part of the experience.
Planning is just as important.
1. Look for Real Proposal Experience
One of the first things we recommend is looking through real proposal galleries.
Not styled shoots.
Not models pretending to get engaged.
Real proposals.
Real couples.
Real emotions.
Real surprises.
Every proposal is different.
Some happen exactly as planned.
Others require quick adjustments because of weather, unexpected crowds, travel delays, or last-minute changes.
Experience matters because there's no opportunity to ask someone to do it again.
The proposal happens once.
Your photographer should know how to anticipate those once-in-a-lifetime moments before they happen.
2. Choose Someone Who Helps Plan—Not Just Photograph
A proposal photographer shouldn't simply arrive five minutes before you're ready.
The planning usually begins days or even weeks beforehand.
A photographer who specializes in surprise proposals should be able to help with:
Choosing the right location
Building a personalized timeline
Sunset recommendations
GPS meeting points
Parking advice
Proposal cues
Cover stories
Family coordination
Restaurant reservations
Coffee shop recommendations
Activities before and after your proposal
Custom itineraries for couples visiting from out of town
Backup plans if conditions change
The more planning completed beforehand, the more relaxed you'll feel when proposal day arrives.
By the time you get down on one knee, there shouldn't be anything left to figure out.
3. Local Knowledge Makes a Huge Difference
Every proposal location has its own personality.
Knowing where the best light falls.
Which paths become crowded.
Where the quiet corners are.
How long the walk actually takes.
Where to park.
Which direction to approach from.
Those details don't usually come from Google.
They come from photographing real proposals there.
Over the years we've helped couples propose at locations including:
Griffith Observatory
The Huntington Library
La Jolla Gliderport
Balboa Park
Joshua Tree National Park
Palm Springs
Temecula Wine Country
Laguna Beach
Catalina Island
Every one of those locations requires a completely different approach.
That's why local experience matters.
4. Communication Is Everything
One of the easiest ways to evaluate a photographer is by how they communicate before you've even booked them.
Do they answer your questions?
Do they explain the planning process?
Can you schedule a phone call?
Do they make you feel comfortable?
Planning one of the biggest moments of your life shouldn't leave you guessing.
Clear communication creates confidence.
And confidence makes proposal day much more enjoyable.
5. Ask About Backup Plans
Southern California is beautiful.
It's also unpredictable.
Traffic.
Wildfires.
Wind.
Beach tides.
Parking.
Construction.
Crowds.
We've seen them all.
One of our favorite examples was a proposal originally planned for Griffith Observatory.
As the proposal date approached, several active wildfires created smoky skies and poor air quality across Los Angeles.
Rather than forcing the original location, we worked with the couple to move everything to The Huntington Library.
Instead of smoky skyline views, they enjoyed clear skies, beautiful gardens, and one of our favorite proposal stories to date.
The best proposal photographers don't just hope everything goes according to plan.
They prepare for the possibility that it won't.
6. Read Reviews Carefully
Don't simply count five-star reviews.
Read them.
Look for words like:
Planning
Communication
Flexible
Organized
Professional
Calm
Helpful
Friendly
Those qualities often tell you much more than photography alone.
Great photographs are important.
A great experience is unforgettable.
7. Personality Matters More Than You Think
You'll likely spend anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours with your proposal photographer.
That time should feel comfortable.
Natural.
Relaxed.
One of the biggest compliments we receive isn't actually about our photos.
It's when couples tell us,
"It felt like spending time with friends."
That's always been our goal.
The more comfortable you feel, the more genuine your photographs become.
Proposal day is emotional enough.
Your photographer should make you feel more relaxed—not more nervous.
8. Understand the Photo Delivery Process
Before booking, make sure you understand exactly what you'll receive after your proposal.
Questions worth asking include:
When will we receive our unedited photos?
When do sneak peeks arrive?
How long does the edited gallery take?
Are all the original images included?
How are photos delivered?
Can additional edits be purchased later?
For our couples, we typically deliver the full set of unedited images within 24 to 48 hours so they can immediately relive the experience and begin choosing their favorites.
Once selections are made, edited galleries are generally delivered within one week, depending on the season and current editing queue.
We believe one of the hardest parts after proposing is waiting to relive it.
That's why we work hard to get images back as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality.
9. Can They Handle Last-Minute Proposals?
Not every proposal has months of planning.
Sometimes life happens.
Travel gets rescheduled.
Weather changes.
Photographers cancel.
Family emergencies come up.
Or maybe you've finally decided you simply don't want to wait any longer.
We've helped couples plan proposals with:
Less than 72 hours' notice.
Same-day inquiries.
Last-minute location changes.
Emergency schedule adjustments.
Weather-related pivots.
Surprise family involvement.
Experience adapting quickly often becomes the difference between a stressful proposal and one that feels effortless.
10. The Best Photographer Helps You Stay Present
When proposal day finally arrives...
You shouldn't be wondering where to stand.
You shouldn't be worried about parking.
You shouldn't be wondering when to get down on one knee.
You shouldn't be checking your phone every five minutes.
Those details should already be taken care of.
Your only job should be enjoying one of the biggest moments of your life.
That's exactly how proposal day should feel.
Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Proposal Photographer
If you're speaking with photographers, here are a few questions worth asking before making your decision.
Have you photographed proposals at this location before?
Will you help me choose the proposal location?
Can we schedule a planning call?
Do you scout locations beforehand?
How do you stay hidden?
Can you help create a cover story?
Can family and friends be included?
What happens if weather changes?
Do you provide GPS meeting locations?
Can you recommend restaurants, coffee shops, or activities nearby?
When will we receive our photos?
Do you include the unedited images?
A great proposal photographer should be able to answer every one of these confidently.
Red Flags to Watch For
While there are many incredible photographers, there are also a few warning signs to be aware of.
Be cautious if a photographer:
Has never photographed a real surprise proposal.
Only shows styled shoots in their portfolio.
Doesn't offer planning assistance.
Is difficult to reach before booking.
Doesn't have a backup plan.
Has little knowledge of your proposal location.
Cannot clearly explain how proposal day works.
Photography is only one part of the experience.
Preparation is equally important.
Why Every Proposal We Photograph Is Different
One thing we've learned after photographing proposals throughout Southern California is this:
No two couples are alike.
So why should every proposal follow the same plan?
Every proposal we photograph is customized around the couple.
Different timelines.
Different proposal locations.
Different cover stories.
Different proposal cues.
Different backup plans.
Some couples want complete privacy.
Others want family hiding nearby.
Some travel from across the country.
Others are proposing in the city where they first met.
Our job isn't to fit your story into a template.
Our job is to build a proposal around your story.
That's why we spend so much time planning before proposal day ever arrives.
Because when everything is thoughtfully prepared beforehand...
You're free to stay completely present when the moment finally comes.

A Last-Minute Yes at La Jolla Gliderport | Jorge & Michelle's Sunset Surprise Proposal Story
Sometimes the best proposals are the ones you never planned. After an unexpected emergency forced Jorge to cancel his original proposal plans, he contacted us with less than 48 hours to create a completely new surprise proposal for Michelle. Together, we designed a sunset proposal at La Jolla Gliderport featuring our Signature Yes floral arch overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From personalized timelines and planning calls to proposal cues and a golden-hour engagement session along the cliffs, this is the story of how a last-minute change became one of our favorite surprise proposals in San Diego—and proof that with the right planning, unforgettable moments can happen on any timeline.
Some proposals are planned for months.
Others come together in just a couple of days because life doesn't always go according to plan.
Jorge and Michelle's surprise proposal at La Jolla Gliderport was one of those stories.
Originally, Jorge had a completely different proposal planned.
Unfortunately, just days before he planned to ask one of the biggest questions of his life, an unexpected emergency forced him to cancel everything.
With his original plans no longer possible, he wasn't ready to give up on the proposal.
Instead, on July 10, he gave us a call asking if we had any availability for July 12.
His goal was simple.
He wanted to create an unforgettable surprise proposal for Michelle despite everything that had changed.
The challenge?
We had less than 48 hours to completely reimagine the experience.
Fortunately, planning last-minute proposals is exactly what we do.
Some of our favorite proposal stories begin with a simple message: "Is it too late?" The answer is almost always no. At La Jolla Gliderport, we've helped couples turn short timelines into unforgettable memories. Whether you're visiting San Diego, planning a destination proposal, or making a last-minute decision, we'll guide you through location selection, timing, planning, and photography so your proposal feels calm, effortless, and unforgettable from the first step to the moment you hear "yes." :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Plan Your La Jolla Proposal
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Just Two Days
When Jorge first reached out, we were already booked earlier that afternoon photographing another surprise proposal at Balboa Park.
Fortunately, our evening was still available.
We suggested planning for a sunset proposal, giving us enough time to travel across San Diego and create the experience he envisioned.
Although the timeline was short, the biggest challenge wasn't the time—it was rebuilding a proposal after Jorge's original plans unexpectedly fell through.
Together, we focused on creating a new experience that felt intentional rather than rushed.
As we talked through ideas, we discussed several proposal locations before narrowing everything down to one of our favorite places in Southern California:
La Jolla Gliderport.
Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, La Jolla Gliderport is one of San Diego's most iconic proposal locations. Known for its soaring paragliders, dramatic sandstone cliffs, panoramic ocean views, and unforgettable sunsets, it's a place where every evening feels a little different. The combination of coastal scenery and open skies creates a setting that's both adventurous and romantic.
To make the moment even more personal, Jorge decided to include our Signature Yes Floral Arch Add-On along with our 6-inch "Marry Me" sign, creating an elegant oceanfront proposal setup overlooking the Pacific.
That evening we immediately got to work.
We finalized the proposal location.
Built a personalized timeline.
Mapped out walking routes.
Prepared our proposal planning packet.
Created backup plans.
Then scheduled a phone call the following day to walk through every detail together.
More Than Just Planning a Proposal
One of our favorite parts of every proposal isn't actually the photography.
It's getting to know the people behind the story.
When Jorge and I jumped on our planning call the following day, what we expected to be a quick conversation turned into nearly an hour.
We talked about Michelle.
Their relationship.
How they met.
Why this proposal mattered so much.
What they envisioned for their future together.
By the time we hung up, it no longer felt like we were simply photographing another proposal.
It felt like we were helping friends prepare for one of the biggest moments of their lives.
That's always been our philosophy.
Whether you contact us six months in advance or only a couple of days beforehand, we want every couple to feel like family.
The more we understand your story, the easier it becomes to build a proposal that feels authentic to who you are.
Proposal Day
Proposal days almost never involve just one location.
Earlier that afternoon, Steph and I were already photographing another surprise proposal at Balboa Park.
We wrapped up around 5:10 PM, packed our gear, and immediately headed toward La Jolla.
Fortunately, we'd already built enough travel time into our schedule.
Planning isn't just about the proposal itself.
It's about making sure every piece of the day flows smoothly.
By the time we arrived at La Jolla Gliderport, golden hour was beginning.
We parked in the far dirt parking lot and immediately started unloading equipment.
The floral arch.
The "Marry Me" sign.
Rose petals.
Photography gear.
Trip after trip back to the car.
By the end of setup, we had definitely earned our steps for the day.
Every trip was worth it.
As the sun slowly lowered toward the Pacific Ocean, everything finally came together.
By 7:00 PM, the setup was complete.
We sent Jorge a message letting him know we were ready.
Guiding Jorge to the Proposal Location
Because it was Jorge's first time proposing at La Jolla Gliderport, we didn't want him worrying about finding the exact location.
I met him near the beginning of the trail so there wouldn't be any confusion.
After making visual contact, I quietly guided him closer to the proposal site before stepping aside.
From there, the moment belonged entirely to them.
The Moment Michelle Said Yes
Jorge reached for Michelle's hand as they followed the trail lined with rose petals.
Waiting ahead was the floral arch overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
The evening sky was beginning to glow with warm golden light while colorful paragliders floated quietly overhead.
It was one of those San Diego sunsets that never quite looks the same twice.
As they reached the front of the setup, Jorge turned toward Michelle.
Held both of her hands.
Looked into her eyes.
Took a deep breath.
Then got down on one knee.
"Will you marry me?"
She said yes.
For a few moments, nothing else mattered.
Just the two of them.
The ocean.
The cliffs.
The sunset.
And the beginning of their next chapter together.
Those quiet reactions are always our favorite part.
They're impossible to recreate.
And they're exactly why we love photographing surprise proposals.
Chasing the Last Light
After giving Jorge and Michelle a few private moments together, we transitioned into their engagement session.
One of the biggest advantages of proposing at La Jolla Gliderport is that incredible photo opportunities are only a short walk away.
Within minutes, we had access to:
Dramatic cliffside overlooks
Coastal walking trails
Golden sandstone bluffs
Endless Pacific Ocean views
Some of Southern California's best sunset light
With the sun dropping quickly toward the horizon, we spent the rest of the evening chasing the last light together.
The sky slowly shifted from warm gold to soft shades of orange, pink, and purple.
Some of our favorite photographs weren't posed at all.
They were simply Jorge and Michelle laughing together.
Holding hands.
Looking out across the ocean.
Taking in the realization that they were finally engaged.
Those are the moments we hope every couple remembers decades from now.
Not just how the proposal looked.
But exactly how it felt.

Final Thoughts
Jorge and Michelle's proposal is proof that unexpected changes don't have to change the outcome.
Although an emergency forced Jorge to cancel his original proposal plans, it also opened the door to an entirely new experience overlooking the Pacific Ocean at sunset.
Sometimes the proposal you didn't originally imagine becomes the one you'll never forget.
Watching Michelle say "yes" beneath the floral arch while the last light disappeared over the ocean reminded us that the best proposal stories aren't always the ones that go exactly according to plan.
They're the ones where love adapts, people come together, and everything somehow falls perfectly into place.
We're grateful Jorge trusted us to help write that chapter of their story.
Griffith Observatory vs. The Huntington Library | Which Proposal Location Is Right for You? (2026 Guide)
Trying to decide between Griffith Observatory and The Huntington Library for your surprise proposal? In this 2026 comparison guide, we compare two of Los Angeles County's most iconic proposal locations using our firsthand experience photographing real couples at both. Learn the differences in privacy, parking, walking, crowds, photography, scenery, and overall experience to help you choose the location that best fits your relationship. Whether you envision a cinematic proposal overlooking the Hollywood Sign or a quiet moment surrounded by world-famous botanical gardens, this guide will help you confidently plan one of the most important days of your life.
Choosing where to propose might seem like the easy part.
Until you start researching.
One moment you're imagining yourselves overlooking the Los Angeles skyline beneath the Hollywood Sign. The next, you're walking through world-famous botanical gardens surrounded by thousands of roses.
Over the past year, we've had the privilege of helping couples plan and photograph surprise proposals at both Griffith Observatory and The Huntington Library. While they're only about 30 minutes apart, they offer two completely different experiences.
Neither is better.
They're simply designed for different couples.
If you're trying to decide between the two, here's everything we've learned from planning real proposals at both locations.
Some couples picture a proposal overlooking the Los Angeles skyline. Others dream of quiet gardens, blooming roses, and peaceful walkways. Neither is better—just beautifully different. We'll help you choose the proposal location that best matches your vision, whether that's Griffith Observatory, The Huntington Library, or another unforgettable Los Angeles destination. From planning and location scouting to timelines and photography, we'll make sure every detail comes together for a moment you'll never forget.
Plan Your Los Angeles Proposal
At a Glance
If you're short on time, here's our recommendation.
Choose Griffith Observatory if you want:
Hollywood Sign views
The Los Angeles skyline
Dramatic sunsets
City lights
Iconic Los Angeles architecture
A classic California proposal
Choose The Huntington Library if you want:
Beautiful botanical gardens
More privacy
Historic architecture
Flowers throughout the property
A quieter atmosphere
Plenty of space to explore after the proposal
Both locations create unforgettable proposals.
The question isn't which location is better.
It's which one feels more like your relationship.
The Overall Experience
This is probably the biggest difference between the two.
Griffith Observatory
Griffith Observatory feels exciting.
You'll hear conversations in different languages.
Tourists taking in the skyline.
People waiting for sunset.
Visitors searching for the Hollywood Sign.
There's an energy here that's difficult to describe until you've experienced it yourself.
It feels like Los Angeles.
If you've always dreamed of proposing somewhere instantly recognizable, Griffith delivers exactly that.
The Huntington Library
The Huntington feels completely different.
As soon as you step through the entrance gates, everything slows down.
Instead of city noise, you hear birds.
Instead of busy sidewalks, you find quiet garden paths.
Every section of the property feels like its own destination.
It's peaceful.
Elegant.
And surprisingly private considering how well-known it is.
Privacy
If privacy is your highest priority, we'd recommend The Huntington Library.
Its 130-acre property offers countless secluded pathways, gardens, benches, and hidden corners where proposals can feel incredibly intimate.
Griffith Observatory is certainly possible, but because it's one of Los Angeles' most visited attractions, privacy requires more planning.
Fortunately, that's something we help every couple navigate.
Sometimes waiting five minutes or walking another hundred feet completely changes the experience.
Photography
Both locations photograph beautifully.
They simply tell different stories.
Griffith Observatory
Think:
Hollywood Sign.
Los Angeles skyline.
Golden sunsets.
Art Deco architecture.
Blue hour.
City lights.
The photographs feel cinematic.
Almost like a scene from a movie.
The Huntington Library
Think:
Rose gardens.
Palm trees.
Historic pathways.
Elegant architecture.
Botanical gardens.
Seasonal flowers.
The photographs feel timeless.
More romantic.
More classic.
Walking
This is something many couples underestimate.
Both locations involve considerably more walking than people expect.
Griffith Observatory
Depending on where you park, you may walk uphill before reaching the Observatory.
There are stairs throughout the property along with multiple terraces and viewpoints.
The Huntington Library
The Huntington spans more than 130 acres.
You'll spend much of your visit walking between gardens, climbing occasional stairs, navigating gentle inclines, and exploring pathways connecting one incredible landscape to another.
Comfortable shoes are highly recommended for both.
Parking
Parking is one of the biggest differences between these locations.
Griffith Observatory
Parking requires more strategy.
The closest parking lots fill quickly around sunset.
Los Angeles traffic can also add significant travel time, particularly on weekends and holidays.
We recommend arriving 60 to 90 minutes before sunset.
The Huntington Library
Parking is considerably easier.
Visitor parking is included with admission, and although weekends can become busy, arriving early usually provides a smooth experience.
If convenience is important, Huntington has the advantage.
Cost
One advantage Griffith Observatory has is cost.
Admission to the Observatory and surrounding grounds is free.
You'll generally only pay for parking if you choose to park near the Observatory.
The Huntington Library requires admission tickets, but those tickets include access to more than 130 acres of botanical gardens, museums, art galleries, and historic collections.
If you're planning to spend several hours exploring after the proposal, Huntington offers exceptional value.
Families
Planning to include children or parents?
Both locations work wonderfully.
However, we've found The Huntington often provides a smoother experience.
The larger property allows families to spread out naturally, and one of our favorite proposal strategies—photographing under the guise of a family photo session—fits perfectly within the gardens.
One of our favorite examples was Joseph and Maryfel's proposal, where their children unknowingly became part of one of the most memorable moments of the day.
Flexibility Matters
One thing we've learned after photographing proposals throughout Southern California is this:
Sometimes the best proposal isn't the one originally planned.
Joseph originally planned to propose at Griffith Observatory.
As the date approached, several active wildfires across Los Angeles County created smoky skies and air quality advisories.
Rather than forcing the original location, we recommended moving the proposal to The Huntington Library.
The result?
Clear skies.
Beautiful gardens.
A relaxed family experience.
One unforgettable proposal.
It's a reminder that sometimes flexibility creates an even better story than the one you originally imagined.
Which Location Would We Choose?
People ask us this all the time.
Our answer is always the same.
It depends on your vision.
Choose Griffith Observatory if you picture:
Watching the sun set over Los Angeles.
Seeing the Hollywood Sign in your proposal photos.
Celebrating beneath one of California's most iconic landmarks.
A proposal that feels energetic and unmistakably Los Angeles.
Choose The Huntington Library if you picture:
Walking through botanical gardens.
Proposing among thousands of blooming roses.
Enjoying a quieter, more intimate atmosphere.
Spending the afternoon exploring together after the proposal.
Neither choice is wrong.
Both create incredible memories.
The best proposal location is simply the one that reflects your relationship.

Griffith Observatory and The Huntington Library are two of the very best proposal locations in Southern California—but for completely different reasons.
One offers dramatic city views, Hollywood history, and unforgettable sunsets.
The other offers world-class gardens, quiet pathways, and timeless romance.
Having photographed proposals at both, we've learned there isn't a universally "better" location.
There's only the location that's right for your story.
No matter which you choose, thoughtful planning, flexibility, and being fully present in the moment will always matter more than the backdrop itself.

About Griffith Observatory
Griffith Observatory opened in 1935 after being gifted to the City of Los Angeles by philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith, whose vision was to create a place where astronomy and science would be accessible to everyone.
Today, the Observatory welcomes millions of visitors each year and remains one of the most visited observatories in the world.
Beyond astronomy, it's become a Los Angeles icon.
Movies including La La Land, Rebel Without a Cause, The Terminator, and many others have featured Griffith Observatory, making it one of the most recognizable filming locations in California.
For couples, however, it offers something even more special.
Standing together overlooking Los Angeles while the sun sets behind the city creates a moment that's difficult to put into words.

Admission
One of Griffith Observatory's biggest advantages is that admission to the Observatory and surrounding grounds is free.
If you'd like to visit the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, separate tickets are available for purchase.
Because admission is free, Griffith remains one of the most affordable proposal locations in Southern California.
Parking
Parking is one of the biggest things couples underestimate when planning a proposal here.
The Observatory offers paid parking close to the entrance, but spaces fill quickly, especially on weekends, holidays, and around sunset.
Additional free parking can often be found farther down the hill inside Griffith Park, although it requires a longer uphill walk to the Observatory.
If you're proposing during sunset, we recommend arriving 60–90 minutes early.
This gives you plenty of time to park, walk to the Observatory, meet your photographer, and settle your nerves before the proposal.
One of the biggest mistakes we see isn't crowds.
It's arriving late because of Los Angeles traffic.
Weekday or Weekend?
Whenever possible, choose a weekday.
Weekdays typically provide:
Easier parking
Smaller crowds
Cleaner backgrounds
More flexibility
A more relaxed experience
Weekends are still beautiful but expect:
Tour groups
Families
Visitors from around the world
Longer parking waits
Heavier traffic throughout Griffith Park
If a weekend is your only option, arriving early makes a huge difference.
The Best Time to Propose
Golden Hour (Our Favorite)
If we could recommend only one time of day, it would be golden hour.
Warm sunlight, softer shadows, beautiful skyline views, and the Hollywood Sign combine to create incredible proposal photographs.
This is also when the Observatory feels most magical.
Blue Hour
Immediately after sunset, the city begins to glow.
Streetlights turn on.
The skyline lights up.
If you're hoping for a romantic city-light backdrop, blue hour is a fantastic choice.
Sunrise
For couples wanting privacy, sunrise is often overlooked.
Fewer visitors.
Cooler temperatures.
Quiet surroundings.
It's one of the best times if you'd rather avoid crowds.
Midday
While still beautiful, midday generally isn't our first recommendation.
Harsher sunlight and larger crowds can make proposals feel busier than necessary.
Is Griffith Observatory the Right Proposal Location?
Griffith Observatory isn't perfect for every couple.
It's ideal if you're looking for:
Hollywood Sign views
Los Angeles skyline
Sunset
City lights
Iconic California scenery
A lively atmosphere
If you're hoping for:
Botanical gardens
More privacy
Fewer visitors
A quieter experience
You may want to consider The Huntington Library or Lacy Park instead.
The Best Places to Propose at Griffith Observatory
Every proposal is different.
Some couples want the Hollywood Sign behind them.
Others prefer city views.
These are our favorite proposal locations after photographing real proposals here.
1. North Terrace
If we had to choose only one location, it would be the North Terrace.
You'll have incredible views of the Hollywood Sign, the Observatory, and surrounding mountains.
It's one of the most recognizable proposal backdrops anywhere in Los Angeles.
Best for:
First-time visitors
Sunset proposals
Hollywood Sign views
Family proposals
2. West Terrace
The West Terrace offers sweeping views over Los Angeles and often feels slightly less crowded than the main viewing areas.
It's an excellent option if you want skyline photographs without standing directly in the busiest section.
Best for:
Skyline views
Blue hour
Romantic portraits
3. Observatory Front Lawn
The front lawn provides classic views of the Observatory's famous architecture.
It's perfect for couples wanting the historic building itself as the backdrop.
Best for:
Observatory architecture
Engagement portraits
Daytime proposals
4. Observatory Walkways
Sometimes the best proposal isn't at the busiest overlook.
The surrounding walkways often provide quieter moments while still showcasing incredible scenery.
If the main viewpoints become crowded, moving just a short distance can make all the difference.
5. Hidden Overlooks
One thing we've learned after photographing proposals here is this:
The best proposal location isn't always the most popular one.
Sometimes walking an extra minute or two away from the crowds creates a far more intimate experience.
We'll often scout nearby viewpoints before your proposal to find the best combination of lighting, privacy, and scenery.
What We've Learned Photographing Griffith Observatory Proposals
After photographing proposals here, a few things stand out every single time.
Traffic Is Usually the Biggest Challenge
People often worry about crowds.
We worry about traffic.
Los Angeles traffic can quickly change your timeline, especially during weekends, holidays, concerts at the Greek Theatre, or special events inside Griffith Park.
Building extra time into your schedule removes unnecessary stress.
Don't Worry About People in the Background
One concern almost every client mentions is crowds.
The good news?
Most of the time, people naturally move.
If needed, we'll wait a few minutes, reposition slightly, or remove distractions during editing.
Don't let the thought of visitors stop you from choosing Griffith Observatory.
Always Have a Backup Plan
One of our favorite proposal stories almost happened here.
Joseph originally planned to propose at Griffith Observatory, but active wildfires across Los Angeles County created smoky skies and air quality advisories.
Together, we decided to pivot to The Huntington Library.
The result?
Clear skies.
A beautiful Rose Garden.
An unforgettable family proposal.
Sometimes flexibility creates an even better story than the original plan.
A Cover Story Makes Everything Feel Natural
One of our favorite proposal strategies is using a believable cover story.
Maybe you're sightseeing.
Maybe you're taking vacation photos.
Maybe you've hired us for a family session.
By the time your partner realizes what's happening...
You're already on one knee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hire a photographer?
Absolutely.
Having a photographer allows you to relive one of the biggest moments of your life for years to come.
Can family attend?
Yes.
We've photographed many proposals that included parents, siblings, and children.
With proper planning, everyone can be part of the experience without spoiling the surprise.
What if it's crowded?
We'll help scout locations, watch foot traffic, adjust our position if needed, and make recommendations throughout the planning process.
Can I decorate?
Simple bouquets or small personal touches are generally easier than elaborate setups due to the popularity of the Observatory and park regulations. Always respect park rules and avoid blocking pathways or leaving decorations behind.
What if there's wildfire smoke?
Southern California weather can change quickly.
If conditions become unsafe or visibility is poor because of wildfire smoke, we'll help you explore alternative locations like The Huntington Library or Lacy Park to ensure you still have an incredible experience.

About The Huntington Library
The Huntington Library began as the private estate of Henry E. Huntington, a railroad executive, businessman, and avid collector, along with his wife Arabella Huntington.
In the early 1900s, the couple transformed the estate into an extraordinary collection of rare books, manuscripts, artwork, and botanical gardens featuring plants from around the world.
Before his passing in 1927, Henry Huntington established a charitable trust, ensuring the estate would become a public institution dedicated to education, research, horticulture, and the arts.
Today, The Huntington welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and is widely considered one of Southern California's most treasured cultural landmarks. Despite its popularity, the property's sheer size makes it surprisingly easy to find peaceful corners perfect for an intimate proposal.

Admission
Admission tickets are required for every visitor, and we highly recommend purchasing them online before your visit, especially during spring, weekends, and holidays when tickets often sell out.
Current admission pricing (subject to change):
Adults: Approximately $29
Seniors (65+): Approximately $24
Students (ages 12–18 or with valid student ID): Approximately $24
Children (ages 4–11): Approximately $13
Children under 4: Free
If you're planning a proposal, booking your tickets in advance helps keep the day stress-free and ensures your preferred arrival time.
Parking
One of the biggest advantages of proposing at The Huntington Library is the parking.
Parking is free with admission, and there are large visitor parking lots conveniently located near the entrance.
Although parking is plentiful, we recommend arriving 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled entry time. This allows plenty of time to park, check in, meet your photographer, and settle any pre-proposal nerves before heading into the gardens.
Weekday or Weekend?
One of the questions we're asked most often is whether couples should propose during the week or on the weekend.
Our recommendation is simple.
Choose a weekday whenever possible.
Weekdays typically offer:
Smaller crowds
Easier parking
Quieter gardens
Cleaner backgrounds for photos
More flexibility when choosing proposal locations
Weekends are still beautiful, but you should expect:
More families
Tour groups
Longer lines
Increased foot traffic throughout the gardens
If a weekend is your only option, arriving early in the morning will give you the best experience.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
One thing many visitors underestimate is just how large The Huntington Library really is.
With over 130 acres to explore, you'll spend much of your visit walking between gardens, climbing stairs, navigating gentle hills, and following winding pathways.
Comfortable shoes are one of the best things you can bring.
If you're planning to dress up for your proposal, consider bringing a second pair of shoes to change into once portraits begin.
You'll enjoy your experience much more.
Plan for Plenty of Walking
Every garden at The Huntington feels like an entirely different destination.
You'll naturally want to stop and explore.
That's why having a proposal timeline is incredibly helpful.
Without one, it's easy to spend far more time than expected wandering through the gardens because every turn offers another beautiful backdrop.
When we help couples plan proposals, we build enough time into the schedule so they can enjoy exploring without feeling rushed.
Food & Drinks
Planning to spend several hours at The Huntington?
The 1919 Café is conveniently located on the property and offers food and drinks for both adults and children.
Menu options typically include:
Sandwiches
Fresh salads
Kids' meals
Coffee
Cold beverages
Desserts
Beer
Wine
Whether you're grabbing lunch before the proposal or celebrating afterward, it's a great place to relax without leaving the gardens.
The Best Places to Propose at The Huntington Library
Every couple has a different vision for their proposal. Some dream of colorful gardens filled with flowers, while others prefer a quiet pathway away from the crowds.
After photographing proposals throughout The Huntington Library, these are the locations we recommend most.
1. Rose Garden
If we could recommend only one location for a surprise proposal, it would be the Rose Garden.
Home to thousands of roses representing hundreds of varieties, it's one of the most iconic and romantic areas on the property. Wide walking paths, colorful blooms, and elegant landscaping create a timeless setting that photographs beautifully throughout much of the year.
This is where we photographed Joseph and Maryfel's surprise proposal after changing locations from Griffith Observatory because of wildfire smoke and poor air quality in Los Angeles.
Sometimes a change of plans leads to an even better story.
Best for:
Surprise proposals
Family proposals
Spring proposals
Engagement photos afterward
Things to consider:
One of the most popular areas in the gardens.
Weekdays and early mornings usually offer the most privacy.
2. Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden is one of the most peaceful places within The Huntington.
Bridges, koi ponds, waterfalls, and traditional Japanese architecture create an atmosphere that feels calm and intimate.
If you're hoping for a proposal surrounded by nature with fewer distractions, this is one of our favorite recommendations.
Best for:
Quiet proposals
Morning proposals
Couples wanting a peaceful setting
3. Chinese Garden
The Chinese Garden is considered one of the largest classical Chinese gardens outside of China.
Beautiful pavilions, stone bridges, lakes, and traditional architecture make this one of the most unique proposal locations anywhere in Southern California.
If you're looking for elegance and cultural beauty, it's hard to beat.
Best for:
Elegant proposals
Cultural architecture
Engagement portraits
4. Palm Garden
The Palm Garden creates one of the most dramatic entrances anywhere on the property.
Towering palm trees line the pathways, creating beautiful symmetry and timeless Southern California scenery.
It's also a wonderful location for families because there's plenty of open space for children to comfortably move around.
Best for:
Family proposals
Scenic portraits
Golden hour photography
5. Jungle Garden
If you're looking for something that feels completely different from the rest of The Huntington, the Jungle Garden is worth exploring.
Dense tropical plants, shaded pathways, and lush greenery create a secluded atmosphere that feels surprisingly private despite being in the middle of one of Southern California's most visited attractions.
Best for:
Private proposals
Tropical scenery
Couples wanting something unique
6. Lily Ponds
Often overlooked by visitors, the Lily Ponds offer a quieter setting with beautiful reflections and mature landscaping.
While they may not receive the same attention as the Rose Garden, they're perfect for couples hoping for a more intimate proposal.
Best for:
Romantic proposals
Smaller crowds
Peaceful portraits
7. Desert Garden
The Desert Garden is home to one of the world's largest collections of cacti and succulents.
It offers a completely different look from the rest of the property and is ideal for couples who love desert landscapes or want something a little less traditional.
Best for:
Desert lovers
Unique engagement photos
Southwest-inspired scenery
Hidden Garden Paths
One thing we've learned after photographing proposals at The Huntington is this:
The best proposal location isn't always the most famous one.
Some of our favorite proposal photographs have happened along quiet pathways, beneath mature trees, beside secluded benches, or between gardens where very few visitors stop.
When we scout proposals, we're paying attention to lighting, foot traffic, privacy, and how each location feels in the moment.
Sometimes those hidden corners become the most memorable part of the entire experience.
Our Proposal Planning Process
Every proposal begins long before proposal day.
We'll help you:
Choose the best proposal location
Scout the gardens beforehand
Create a personalized timeline
Recommend the best lighting
Build a believable cover story
Coordinate family members
Share GPS meeting locations
Develop backup plans if needed
One of our favorite approaches—especially when children or family are involved—is photographing the proposal under the guise of a family photo session.
It feels completely natural, keeps the surprise intact, and allows everyone to relax before the big moment.
A Real Proposal at The Huntington Library
One of our favorite Huntington proposals almost didn't happen here.
Joseph originally planned to propose at Griffith Observatory, but several active wildfires across Los Angeles County created smoky skies and air quality advisories.
Together, we pivoted to The Huntington Library, where clearer skies, cleaner air, and the beautiful Rose Garden created the perfect setting for an unforgettable family proposal.
It's a reminder that sometimes changing the plan creates an even better story.

From Griffith Observatory to Huntington Library | Joseph & Maryfel's Surprise Proposal Story
Originally planned for Griffith Observatory, Joseph & Maryfel's surprise proposal took an unexpected turn when active wildfires around Los Angeles County created smoky skies and air quality advisories. Together, we pivoted to The Huntington Library in San Marino, where the iconic Rose Garden became the perfect setting for an unforgettable proposal surrounded by family. In this guide, we share how thoughtful planning, flexibility, and a well-executed cover story led to one of our favorite Memorial Day weekend proposals. If you're considering a proposal at The Huntington Library near Pasadena, discover expert planning tips, photography insights, and why this historic estate is one of Southern California's premier proposal destinations.
One of the biggest lessons we've learned after photographing hundreds of surprise proposals is this:
The best proposals aren't always the ones that go exactly as planned.
Sometimes the location changes.
Sometimes the timeline shifts.
Sometimes life throws an unexpected curveball.
What matters most is adapting, embracing the moment, and creating a proposal that still feels true to your relationship.
That's exactly what happened with Joseph and Maryfel.
The proposal moved from Griffith Observatory to The Huntington Library, proving that flexibility, preparation, and the right team can turn an unexpected change into the perfect beginning. We do more than photograph proposals—we help navigate the unexpected. From monitoring conditions and recommending alternative locations to scouting the area, planning timelines, and capturing every genuine reaction, we'll make sure your proposal feels intentional no matter what the day brings. Because the goal isn't to follow the original plan—it's to create a moment you'll never forget.
Plan Your Los Angeles Proposal
It All Started with a Message
On May 6, Joseph reached out to us asking if we were available to photograph his surprise proposal at Griffith Observatory on June 24.
We replied immediately, letting him know we were available while asking a few questions to better understand his vision.
One thing stood out immediately.
He wanted his children to be part of one of the biggest moments of his life.
Rather than simply photographing the proposal, Joseph wanted to create a memory his entire family could look back on for years to come.
We loved the idea.
Sometimes Plans Change—And That's Okay
As planning continued, life happened.
Joseph's timeline shifted, and instead of proposing in late June, he decided to move everything up to May 24, right in the middle of Memorial Day weekend.
To say we were busy would be an understatement.
Leading into Memorial Day weekend, Stephanie and I already had four surprise proposals scheduled, with several more sessions immediately afterward.
We always joke with each other...
"Love doesn't stop for anyone."
Behind every proposal is a lot more than simply showing up with cameras.
Every proposal we photograph includes planning, timeline creation, scouting, communication, backup plans, GPS pins, proposal cues, and logistics. During busy holiday weekends, those plans become even more important as we're often traveling across Southern California on very little sleep while making sure every couple still receives the same experience we'd want if it were our own proposal.
No matter how busy the calendar gets, one thing never changes.
Every couple deserves our full attention.
Why We Moved the Proposal
Originally, Joseph planned to propose at Griffith Observatory.
As Memorial Day weekend approached, several wildfires were active throughout Los Angeles County, creating smoky skies and triggering air quality advisories across parts of the region.
Although Griffith Observatory remained an incredible location, we didn't feel those conditions would create the best experience for Joseph and his family.
Rather than hoping conditions improved, we began discussing alternatives.
That's when we recommended The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in nearby San Marino.
Being farther inland, Huntington offered noticeably clearer skies, better air quality, and a more comfortable environment for spending several hours outdoors with the kids.
Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we could have made.
One thing we always tell our couples is this:
Your proposal doesn't have to go exactly according to the original plan.
Sometimes the unexpected pivot becomes one of the best parts of your story.
Whether it's weather, wildfires, crowds, or something completely unexpected, being flexible often leads to an even better experience.
Every proposal is unique.
Every couple has their own journey.
Sometimes changing course simply becomes another chapter in that story.
Why Huntington Library Is One of Southern California's Best Proposal Locations
Located in San Marino near Pasadena, The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens spans more than 130 acres and is one of Southern California's most iconic destinations.
Originally established by railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington, the property combines world-renowned botanical gardens, historic architecture, art collections, and research libraries into one incredible destination.
For couples, however, it's much more than a museum.
It's one of the most romantic places in Los Angeles County.
Within a single visit, you can explore:
Palm Garden
Desert Garden
Japanese Garden
Chinese Garden
Jungle Garden
Rose Garden
Lily Ponds
Historic architecture
Beautiful fountains
Scenic walking paths
Countless hidden portrait locations
The variety is unmatched.
Every few minutes feels like stepping into an entirely different world.
The Rose Garden
After discussing several ideas with Joseph, we ultimately decided the Rose Garden would become the proposal location.
Home to thousands of roses representing hundreds of varieties, the Huntington Rose Garden is one of the property's most recognizable and romantic spaces.
Long pathways weave through vibrant blooms while mature trees, manicured hedges, and elegant landscaping create a timeless atmosphere that feels both intimate and grand.
Whether you're planning a surprise proposal, engagement session, or simply visiting during bloom season, it's one of the most beautiful gardens in Southern California.
Going Undercover
To preserve the surprise, we met Joseph and his family near the front entrance.
Our cover story?
We were simply photographing a family session.
It's one of our favorite ways to photograph proposals.
A family photo session feels completely natural.
Everyone relaxes.
Nobody questions why a photographer is there.
Most importantly...
Your partner never suspects what's about to happen.
With introductions made, we began walking through the gardens together.
Exploring Huntington Together
Our route took us through several incredible sections of the property.
The Palm Garden.
The Jungle Garden.
Beautiful walking paths.
Towering palms.
Lush greenery.
Along the way we captured genuine family moments, playful interactions with the kids, and natural candid photographs.
If you've never visited Huntington before...
Prepare to walk.
The property is massive.
There's beauty around every corner.
Without a plan, it's incredibly easy to get distracted because every garden feels like it deserves its own photo session.
That's one reason we always create personalized timelines beforehand.
Having a clear plan allowed Joseph and his family to enjoy the experience while still arriving at the Rose Garden exactly when the lighting was at its best.
The Moment Everything Came Together
Once we reached the Rose Garden, we quietly searched for the perfect location.
Good light.
Beautiful background.
Minimal foot traffic.
Everything lined up perfectly.
I looked over at Joseph.
Gave him a subtle signal.
This was the spot.
We framed the entire family together for what appeared to be another family portrait.
Then we gave everyone one simple direction.
"Everyone look behind you and point."
As everyone turned around, Joseph quietly stepped backward.
The children naturally moved aside.
When Maryfel turned back around...
Joseph was already on one knee.
"Will you marry me?"
She smiled.
She said yes.
And just like that...
Everything they had been planning for weeks became one unforgettable moment.
The Moments After the Proposal
One of our favorite parts of every proposal happens immediately afterward.
The hugs.
The laughter.
The happy tears.
The excitement.
We always give couples a few quiet moments together while documenting everything naturally from a distance.
Those authentic reactions often become the photographs couples treasure the most.
Celebrating Around the Gardens
After congratulating the newly engaged couple, we spent the next hour exploring Huntington together.
The Rose Garden.
Historic walkways.
Elegant architecture.
Lush landscapes.
Towering trees.
Every few minutes the scenery completely changed, allowing us to create a gallery with incredible variety without ever leaving the property.
It's one of the many reasons Huntington continues to be one of our favorite proposal and engagement locations in Southern California.
Thinking About Proposing at Huntington Library?
If you're planning a surprise proposal at Huntington Library, our biggest advice is simple.
Have a plan.
But don't be afraid if that plan changes.
Sometimes a pivot leads to an even better experience.
When you work with Last Minute Photoshoot, we'll help guide every step of the planning process.
We'll recommend the best proposal locations.
Scout the property beforehand.
Build your personalized timeline.
Provide GPS pins.
Create a believable cover story.
Coordinate proposal cues.
Help with family logistics.
Recommend nearby restaurants and activities.
And capture every genuine moment so you can relive it forever.
By proposal day, everything has already been planned.
All you have to do is show up...
Take a deep breath...
And ask,
"Will you marry me?"

Joseph's proposal is proof that the original plan isn't always the best plan.
Because we stayed flexible, monitored conditions, and adjusted when circumstances changed, his family enjoyed clearer skies, cleaner air, and one of Southern California's most beautiful gardens instead of worrying about wildfire smoke and poor visibility.

Fireworks, Forever & a Sunset "Yes" | Billy's Fourth of July Weekend Surprise Proposal in Newport Beach
Planning a surprise proposal in Newport Beach? Discover Billy's unforgettable Fourth of July weekend proposal, where a simple inquiry turned into a romantic sunset engagement overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With less than a week to plan, we helped coordinate the perfect proposal featuring our elegant "Marry Me" setup, rose petals, floral décor, personalized music, and concierge-style planning. Follow Billy's real proposal story for inspiration, expert planning tips, and learn why Newport Beach is one of Southern California's most romantic destinations for a sunset surprise proposal and engagement photography.
Some of our favorite proposal stories begin with a carefully planned surprise.
Others begin with one simple word.
"Hi."
That's exactly how Billy's story started.
He reached out to us through our website letting us know he lived in Orange County and wanted to propose during Fourth of July weekend.
There was just one challenge.
We had less than a week to bring everything together.
Fortunately, helping couples plan unforgettable proposals—even on short notice—is exactly what we love doing.
What began as a Fourth of July weekend getaway ended with a sunset proposal, happy tears, and a brand-new chapter together. From intimate beach proposals to fully styled experiences with florals, music, and romantic décor, we'll help create a proposal that's personal, memorable, and beautifully planned. Whether you're visiting Newport Beach or you're local to Southern California, we'll make sure every detail comes together before you hear "yes."
Plan Your Newport Beach Proposal
A Weekend Full of Celebrations
Fourth of July weekend in 2026 wasn't just another holiday.
America was celebrating 250 years since the Declaration of Independence.
Families were preparing for barbecues.
Beaches would be packed.
Fireworks would fill the night sky.
While the country prepared to celebrate its history, Billy was preparing to celebrate something just as meaningful to him.
The beginning of forever.
We had a feeling there would be fireworks that weekend...
Just not the kind everyone else was expecting.
Turning an Idea Into a Plan
Once Billy booked with us, we immediately got to work.
Together we planned a romantic sunset proposal overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Newport Beach.
To make the moment even more memorable, we designed one of our signature minimalist proposal setups featuring:
A romantic "Marry Me" sign
Rose petals
Elegant floral décor
Golden-hour ocean views
Simple.
Elegant.
Timeless.
The kind of setup that allows the emotion—not the decorations—to become the center of attention.
Arriving Early Makes All the Difference
One thing we never compromise on is arriving early.
Before every proposal, we scout the location, complete the setup, check lighting conditions, and make sure every detail is exactly where it should be before our couple arrives.
That way, when Billy walked onto the beach...
He could focus on one thing.
The person he loved.
Their Song Began to Play
As Billy and his girlfriend slowly walked toward the proposal location, we quietly started playing their song:
"The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice.
She immediately stopped.
She smiled.
Then looked around wondering,
"Where is that coming from?"
Without realizing it, she was walking straight toward one of the biggest moments of her life.
One Question Changed Everything
As they reached the proposal setup, Billy began speaking.
Every word he'd been rehearsing.
Every emotion he'd been holding onto.
Every reason he wanted to spend forever with her.
Then...
He got down on one knee.
For just a moment...
Everything else disappeared.
The beach.
The music.
The people walking nearby.
Even the sunset.
There were only two people standing in that moment.
Billy asked the biggest question of his life.
She smiled through tears.
And she said...
"Yes."
Chasing the Last Light
With the surprise complete, the evening was just beginning.
For the next thirty to forty minutes we explored the Newport Beach coastline together, photographing every laugh, embrace, and quiet moment as the sun slowly disappeared below the Pacific Ocean.
Golden hour gave us everything we could have hoped for.
Soft light.
Warm colors.
An unforgettable sunset.
Sometimes the best photographs happen after the proposal.
Because that's when the excitement finally settles in and couples can simply enjoy being together.
Why Newport Beach Is Perfect for a Sunset Proposal
Newport Beach continues to be one of our favorite places in Southern California for surprise proposals.
From dramatic coastal bluffs and sandy beaches to incredible sunsets and nearby waterfront restaurants, it's the perfect destination for couples looking to create an unforgettable engagement experience.
Whether you're planning something intimate or incorporating a beautifully decorated proposal setup, Newport Beach offers a variety of stunning locations to fit every vision.

Victoria Beach vs. Heisler Park: Which Laguna Beach Proposal Location Is Right for You? (2026 Guide)
Trying to decide between Victoria Beach (Mermaid Beach) and Heisler Park for your Laguna Beach surprise proposal? This in-depth 2026 comparison guide breaks down the pros and cons of Laguna Beach's two most popular proposal locations, including privacy, accessibility, parking, tides, nearby restaurants, shopping, photography opportunities, and the overall experience each location offers. Whether you're dreaming of proposing beneath the iconic Pirate Tower or celebrating with dinner overlooking the Pacific after your engagement, this guide will help you choose the location that best fits your story while sharing expert planning tips from experienced Laguna Beach surprise proposal photographers.
If you're planning a surprise proposal in Laguna Beach, there's a good chance you've narrowed your search to two of the city's most iconic locations:
Victoria Beach (Mermaid Beach) and Heisler Park.
Both offer breathtaking Pacific Ocean views.
Both create unforgettable proposal experiences.
Both are among our favorite places to photograph engagements in Southern California.
So which one should you choose?
The truth is, there isn't one location that's better than the other.
Each offers a completely different experience, and the right choice depends on your vision, your relationship, and how you want to remember one of the biggest moments of your life.
After photographing proposals throughout Laguna Beach, here's everything we've learned to help you decide.
Victoria Beach and Heisler Park are both incredible proposal locations. The difference isn't which one is better—it's which one feels more like your relationship. Whether you're imagining a secluded beach with a historic Pirate Tower or dramatic cliffside views just steps from restaurants and downtown Laguna Beach, we'll help you choose the perfect location, build a personalized timeline, and capture every unforgettable moment.
Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal
Choose Victoria Beach (Mermaid Beach) If...
Victoria Beach is perfect for couples looking for an adventurous, intimate, and unforgettable proposal experience.
You may love Victoria Beach if you want:
A secluded beach away from the busiest tourist areas.
The iconic Pirate Tower as your proposal backdrop.
Dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery.
Stunning golden-hour engagement photos.
A proposal that feels like discovering a hidden beach.
One of the most unique proposal locations in Southern California.
There's something magical about Victoria Beach.
Walking down the staircase, hearing the waves crashing against the cliffs, and finally seeing the Pirate Tower appear in the distance creates an experience that feels unlike anywhere else in Laguna Beach.
It's one of those locations where every proposal feels like its own story.
Things to Consider About Victoria Beach
As beautiful as Victoria Beach is, it does require a little more planning.
Parking can be limited, especially during weekends and holidays.
You'll need to walk through a residential neighborhood before taking the public staircase down to the beach.
Most importantly...
The tide matters.
Depending on the time of day, high tide can make it difficult—or even unsafe—to walk around the Pirate Tower.
That's why we always monitor tide conditions before recommending proposal times for our couples.
The extra planning is worth it, but it's definitely something to consider if you're visiting Laguna Beach for the first time.
Choose Heisler Park If...
Heisler Park offers a completely different kind of proposal experience.
Rather than feeling hidden away, Heisler Park places you right in the heart of Laguna Beach while still offering spectacular coastal views.
Heisler Park is perfect if you want:
Easy accessibility.
Beautiful bluff-top ocean views.
Multiple proposal locations within one park.
Minimal walking.
No concerns about tides.
Plenty of nearby restaurants and activities after the proposal.
One of the biggest reasons we recommend Heisler Park is everything that surrounds it.
After you've heard "Yes," your day doesn't have to end.
In fact, it's just getting started.
Within just a few minutes' walk you'll find:
Oceanfront restaurants
Cocktail bars
Coffee shops
Dessert spots
Boutique shopping
Local art galleries
The Laguna Art Museum
Scenic walking paths overlooking the Pacific
Nearby beaches including Diver's Cove and Rockpile Beach
If you're planning a full day in Laguna Beach, Heisler Park makes it incredibly easy to transition from your proposal to dinner, drinks, shopping, or simply exploring one of California's most beautiful coastal towns.
One of our favorite things about Heisler Park is that you can park once and spend the rest of the day enjoying Laguna Beach together.
Victoria Beach Creates One Type of Story...
When we photograph proposals at Victoria Beach, the galleries often feel:
Cinematic
Adventurous
Intimate
Dramatic
Coastal
Timeless
The Pirate Tower, towering cliffs, and secluded shoreline naturally create photographs that feel like they're pulled from a movie.
If you've always imagined proposing somewhere truly unique, Victoria Beach is hard to beat.
Heisler Park Creates Another
Heisler Park has a different personality.
Its engagement galleries tend to feel:
Elegant
Relaxed
Classic Laguna Beach
Bright
Coastal luxury
Sophisticated
The manicured gardens, ocean bluffs, palm trees, walking paths, and downtown atmosphere create an experience that's just as beautiful—but in a completely different way.
Which Proposal Location Would We Recommend?
Instead of asking,
"Which location is better?"
Ask yourself,
"What kind of experience do we want?"
Choose Victoria Beach if you picture yourselves walking along a secluded beach beneath towering cliffs with the famous Pirate Tower behind you as the sun sets over the Pacific.
Choose Heisler Park if you picture proposing on a beautiful ocean bluff before spending the rest of the day exploring Laguna Beach, enjoying dinner, shopping, art galleries, and celebrating together.
Neither answer is wrong.
Both create unforgettable memories.

If you're planning a surprise proposal in Laguna Beach, one question usually comes before everything else:
Where should I propose?
After photographing surprise proposals throughout Laguna Beach for years, we've learned something important.
The "best" location isn't simply the one with the prettiest view.
It's the location that fits your vision, your relationship, and the experience you want to create together.
Some couples dream about a hidden beach with a historic pirate tower.
Others imagine a quiet bluff overlooking the Pacific.
Some want an elegant proposal with a luxury resort nearby.
Fortunately, Laguna Beach offers all three.

Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal
1. Victoria Beach (Mermaid Beach)
Best For
Iconic scenery
Adventure lovers
Destination proposals
Sunset proposals
Couples wanting something unforgettable
If someone asked us to describe the most unique proposal location in Laguna Beach, Victoria Beach would probably be our answer.
Known for its famous pirate tower, dramatic cliffs, tide pools, and secluded shoreline, Victoria Beach feels like discovering a hidden destination rather than simply visiting another California beach.
The area surrounding the tower is often referred to as Mermaid Beach, although most visitors know it simply as Victoria Beach.
One thing we always discuss with couples before recommending this location is the tide.
Depending on the day, high tide can completely surround the pirate tower, making access difficult or unsafe. We monitor tide charts before every proposal and arrive early to verify conditions so our couples never have to guess.
Parking also deserves planning.
Street parking is limited, especially during summer and holiday weekends, and most visitors access the beach through the surrounding residential neighborhood before walking down the public staircase.
When everything comes together, however, Victoria Beach is simply magical.
Golden cliffs.
Historic architecture.
Ocean waves.
And some of the most beautiful sunsets in Southern California.
One of our favorite memories here was helping Danny travel from Colorado to propose to Bri over Fourth of July weekend. After carefully planning parking, tide timing, and the proposal itself, everything unfolded perfectly—and dolphins even appeared during their engagement session.
Read their full proposal story here:
From Colorado to Forever | Danny & Bri's Surprise Proposal at Victoria Beach
2. Treasure Island Park & Beach (Below Montage Laguna Beach)
Best For
Luxury proposals
Easy accessibility
Ocean bluff views
Sunset portraits
Couples wanting resort elegance
Treasure Island Park sits directly below the iconic Montage Laguna Beach and offers one of the most polished proposal experiences in Orange County.
Unlike some beaches that require longer walks or careful timing with the tides, Treasure Island provides beautifully landscaped walking paths, ocean overlooks, gardens, beach access, and incredible sunset lighting all within a short distance.
It gives couples flexibility.
You can propose overlooking the Pacific.
Walk down to the beach afterward.
Or celebrate with dinner at one of Laguna Beach's most well-known resorts.
It's especially ideal for couples traveling from out of town who want convenience without sacrificing beautiful scenery.
We've photographed several unforgettable proposals here, including a midday surprise proposal overlooking the coastline that proved beautiful light isn't limited to sunset.
Read that proposal story:
A Midday Montage Beach Surprise Proposal at Treasure Island Park
3. Crescent Bay Park & Beach
Best For
Privacy
Ocean bluff proposals
Floral arch setups
Easy logistics
Romantic sunsets
If we had to recommend one location that balances scenery, accessibility, and flexibility, Crescent Bay Park would be near the top of the list.
The bluff overlooks some of Laguna Beach's most beautiful coastline while providing enough open space for elaborate proposal setups, floral arches, candles, rose petals, musicians, or a simple intimate proposal.
Unlike Victoria Beach, you don't have to worry nearly as much about tides if you're proposing from the bluff.
It's also one of our favorite locations for clients wanting both panoramic ocean views and beach portraits afterward.
We've helped create everything from simple proposals to fully decorated floral experiences here.
One of our favorite stories was Arnold's Memorial Day weekend proposal after flying into Southern California to ask one life-changing question overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
We also recently helped Matt create an unforgettable floral arch proposal overlooking Crescent Bay that transformed the bluff into a private romantic setting.

From a Sunset Stroll to Forever | Chris & Daniella's Surprise Proposal at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego
Chris knew exactly how he wanted to ask one of the biggest questions of his life—but first, life had other plans. After reaching out to us in early April to plan a surprise proposal at San Diego's iconic Sunset Cliffs, an unexpected illness meant postponing the moment until mid-June. The extra time allowed us to refine every detail, from the proposal location to the perfect golden-hour timing. When the day finally arrived, everything unfolded flawlessly. Chris and Daniella's Sunset Cliffs surprise proposal became a beautiful reminder that the best moments are worth waiting for. If you're searching for the best place to propose in San Diego or looking for expert proposal planning and photography, this story offers inspiration, practical tips, and a real behind-the-scenes look at creating an unforgettable proposal.
Some proposal stories happen exactly as planned.
Others require a little patience before becoming unforgettable.
Chris and Daniella's surprise proposal at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in San Diego was one of those moments where everything came together at exactly the right time.
If you're searching for inspiration for a Sunset Cliffs surprise proposal, wondering what it's like to hire a San Diego surprise proposal photographer, or looking for one of Southern California's most scenic places to ask one of life's biggest questions, their story is a perfect example of why this iconic coastline continues to be one of our favorite locations.
A simple sunset stroll along the cliffs became the beginning of Chris & Daniella's next chapter together. Sunset Cliffs remains one of San Diego's most iconic places to propose thanks to its dramatic ocean views, golden-hour light, and unforgettable coastal scenery. Whether you're planning a quiet, intimate moment or a carefully coordinated surprise, we'll help you choose the ideal location, create a seamless plan, and capture every genuine reaction from the moment you get down on one knee.
Plan Your San Diego Proposal
A Message That Started Months Earlier
Back in early April, Chris reached out to us asking if we were available for a surprise proposal on April 25.
As always, we responded right away and began learning more about the two of them, what he envisioned, and the kind of experience he wanted Daniella to remember forever.
We explored several proposal locations throughout San Diego before eventually landing on Sunset Cliffs—a place we photograph throughout the year and one that never loses its magic.
Every proposal is different.
Every sunset is different.
Yet somehow, Sunset Cliffs always finds a way to create a completely unique backdrop.
Why Sunset Cliffs Is One of the Best Places to Propose in San Diego
Stretching along San Diego's Point Loma coastline, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park has become one of Southern California's most recognizable proposal destinations.
Its dramatic sandstone cliffs, panoramic Pacific Ocean views, crashing waves, and unobstructed sunsets create an atmosphere that's difficult to recreate anywhere else.
Unlike crowded beaches, Sunset Cliffs offers numerous overlooks and pathways, making it easier to find quieter pockets for an intimate proposal while still enjoying incredible scenery.
Over the years we've photographed countless proposals here, and every visit reminds us why couples travel from across California—and often across the country—to begin this chapter of their story.
Golden hour paints the cliffs with warm light, the ocean reflects brilliant oranges and blues, and the entire coastline seems to slow down for a few unforgettable minutes.
It's a location we'll never get tired of photographing.
Sometimes the Best Plans Require a Little Patience
Just before proposal day, life threw Chris and Daniella a small curveball.
Daniella came down with a cold, making it clear that postponing the proposal would be the better decision.
Rather than rushing the experience, Chris chose to wait.
That decision ended up making the proposal even better.
The new date in mid-June gave us extra time to fine-tune every detail, revisit timing, confirm lighting, and make sure everyone knew exactly how the proposal would unfold.
Whether you're planning to propose next week or six months from now, thoughtful preparation almost always creates a smoother experience.
And if you're planning something completely last minute?
Honestly...we love those too.
Helping couples pull off unforgettable proposals—whether it's within hours or months—is exactly what we do.
The Moment Everything Came Together
When proposal day finally arrived, everyone knew the plan.
Chris and Daniella made their way toward the overlook while we blended naturally into the scenery.
As they approached, they asked if we could take a photo of them together.
It's one of our favorite proposal setups because it feels completely natural while allowing us to position couples in the best light without raising suspicion.
We captured a few photos.
Asked them to face one another.
Then Chris took a deep breath.
Dropped to one knee.
And in an instant, months of planning turned into one unforgettable memory.
The smiles.
The surprise.
The happy tears.
The excitement.
Those are the moments that remind us why we love photographing surprise proposals.
Celebrating the "Yes"
After the proposal, we explored Sunset Cliffs together while the sun slowly disappeared below the Pacific.
Those first few minutes after a proposal are some of our favorites because everything is real.
Nothing is forced.
Nothing is posed.
It's simply two people soaking in the realization that they're beginning an entirely new chapter together.
The candid laughter, quiet conversations, and celebration often become the photographs couples cherish the most years later.
Planning Your Own Sunset Cliffs Surprise Proposal?
If you're considering proposing at Sunset Cliffs, here are a few things we recommend:
Plan around golden hour for the best natural light.
Arrive early to avoid parking stress.
Have a simple cover story that feels natural.
Keep your speech personal rather than perfect.
Work with someone who knows the location and can help coordinate everything discreetly.
We've photographed proposals throughout San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Southern California, and one thing remains true:
The best proposal isn't the biggest.
It's the one that feels authentic to the two of you.
Final Thoughts
Chris and Daniella's proposal is proof that the perfect moment doesn't always happen on the original date—it happens when the timing is right.
Waiting a few extra weeks because of an unexpected illness didn't take anything away from the experience.
If anything, it made the day even more meaningful.
Watching Chris finally ask the question he'd been planning for months while the sun disappeared behind the Pacific Ocean was the perfect ending to a story that almost happened in April but was always meant to happen in June.
If you're thinking about planning a Sunset Cliffs surprise proposal, we'd love to help make it happen. Whether you're proposing tomorrow, next month, or you're still deciding on the perfect location, we'll help you choose the ideal spot, create a personalized plan, stay hidden until the right moment, and capture every genuine reaction from the proposal through your engagement portraits.
When the moment arrives, all you'll have to focus on is asking one simple question.
We'll take care of preserving the memory forever.

If you're planning a surprise proposal in Southern California, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is choosing where to ask one of the most important questions of your life.
Should you propose along the dramatic cliffs of San Diego or the elegant coastline of Orange County?
It's a question we hear almost every week.
The good news is that there isn't a wrong answer.
Both destinations are home to some of California's most beautiful proposal locations, breathtaking sunsets, and unforgettable ocean views. The difference isn't which county is "better"—it's which one best reflects your relationship, your vision, and the experience you want to create.
After helping plan and photograph surprise proposals throughout San Diego and Orange County, we've learned that every location offers something unique. In this guide, we'll compare both destinations to help you confidently choose the perfect place to begin your next chapter together.
How we compared these destinations
Everything in this guide is based on our firsthand experience planning and photographing surprise proposals throughout Southern California. We considered the scenery, accessibility, privacy, crowd patterns, lighting conditions, photography opportunities, proposal logistics, nearby dining, and the overall experience couples can expect before, during, and after the proposal.
San Diego and Orange County are home to some of Southern California's most beautiful proposal locations. The real question isn't which destination is better—it's which one feels more like your story. We'll help you narrow down the perfect location based on privacy, scenery, accessibility, crowds, sunset timing, and the experience you envision. From your first idea to the moment you hear "yes," we'll help make the planning process simple and stress-free.
Choose Your Proposal Experience
Why Couples Choose San Diego
San Diego has earned its reputation as one of the best places to propose in California for good reason.
The county offers incredible variety. Within a relatively short drive, you can stand on dramatic ocean cliffs, explore hidden coves, wander through historic gardens, or watch the sun set over the Pacific from one of Southern California's most iconic coastlines.
Some of our favorite proposal locations include:
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
La Jolla Cove
Torrey Pines Gliderport
Balboa Park
Windansea Beach
Coronado Beach
San Diego is an excellent choice for couples who love adventure, sweeping ocean views, and landscapes that feel distinctly Californian. If you're envisioning rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and a proposal surrounded by nature, San Diego delivers some of the most memorable scenery anywhere along the West Coast.
Another advantage is the incredible variety available for engagement photos afterward. It's often possible to capture several completely different looks without spending much time driving between locations.
Why Couples Choose Orange County
Orange County offers a different type of romance.
Where San Diego feels adventurous, Orange County feels refined.
Its coastline is filled with picturesque beach towns, beautifully maintained parks, hidden coves, and luxury resorts overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Some of our favorite proposal locations include:
Laguna Beach
Crystal Cove State Park
Crescent Bay Park
Heisler Park
Victoria Beach
Newport Beach
For couples looking for an elegant coastal atmosphere, Orange County is difficult to beat.
Many proposals naturally transition into oceanfront dinners, sunset walks through Laguna Beach, or engagement photos overlooking quiet coves and dramatic cliffs. The combination of natural beauty and sophisticated coastal charm creates an unforgettable experience from beginning to end.
Which County Offers More Variety?
If variety is your priority, San Diego has the edge.
Within a single day, couples can experience towering cliffs, sandy beaches, lush gardens, Spanish Colonial architecture, waterfront parks, and panoramic overlooks.
Orange County, on the other hand, excels at creating a consistent luxury coastal experience.
Its beaches, parks, and seaside communities each have their own personality while maintaining the relaxed elegance the area is known for.
Neither is objectively better.
They simply offer different experiences.
Privacy and Crowd Levels
Privacy is one of the most overlooked aspects of planning a surprise proposal.
A breathtaking location can quickly become stressful if hundreds of people are gathered around during the biggest moment of your life.
San Diego generally provides more opportunities to find quieter spaces, especially along larger coastal parks and overlooks.
Orange County remains an outstanding choice, but popular beaches—particularly in Laguna Beach—can become busier during weekends, holidays, and summer sunsets.
This is where thoughtful planning becomes incredibly valuable.
Knowing where to stand, when to arrive, and how foot traffic typically moves throughout the evening can transform a busy beach into an intimate proposal experience.
Proposal Setups and Decorations
Many couples dream of proposing with flowers, candles, a romantic picnic, or even a floral arch overlooking the ocean.
Both San Diego and Orange County offer incredible opportunities for styled proposals, but every location comes with different guidelines.
Some parks are more accommodating to decorative setups, while others have restrictions designed to protect the coastline and public spaces.
Choosing the right location isn't just about the view—it's also about selecting a space that fits the experience you're hoping to create.
Planning around these details well in advance helps ensure everything runs smoothly on proposal day.
Which County Has Better Sunsets?
The truth?
Both are spectacular.
San Diego's west-facing coastline is famous for dramatic sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, especially along Sunset Cliffs and La Jolla.
Orange County offers equally beautiful golden-hour light, particularly around Laguna Beach and Crystal Cove, where layered cliffs and rocky shorelines create incredible depth in photographs.
Rather than choosing a county based solely on sunsets, we encourage couples to think about the overall experience they want to create.
The best proposal photographs come from thoughtful planning, perfect timing, and genuine emotion—not simply the location itself.
Planning Is More Important Than the Location
After photographing hundreds of surprise proposals, we've discovered something many couples don't realize.
The location is only one piece of the experience.
The proposal itself lasts only a few minutes.
Everything leading up to it determines how relaxed, meaningful, and memorable those few minutes become.
That's why our planning process goes far beyond photography.
We help couples with:
Personalized location recommendations
Timeline planning
Sunset and lighting guidance
GPS pins and meeting instructions
Crowd management strategies
Proposal positioning
Backup plans when needed
Restaurant and celebration recommendations
When proposal day arrives, your only responsibility should be enjoying the moment.
We'll take care of everything happening behind the scenes.
Which One Do We Recommend?
If your dream proposal includes dramatic cliffs, adventurous landscapes, and iconic California scenery, San Diego is an incredible choice.
If you're drawn to elegant beaches, charming coastal towns, and a more refined oceanfront atmosphere, Orange County may be the perfect fit.
Ultimately, there isn't one winner.
The best proposal location is the one that reflects your relationship and creates the experience you'll both remember for the rest of your lives.
Ready to Plan Your Southern California Surprise Proposal?
Whether you've fallen in love with the dramatic coastline of San Diego or the timeless beauty of Orange County, we'd love to help you create a proposal that's every bit as unforgettable as your story.
From recommending the perfect location and creating a customized timeline to scouting the area, coordinating logistics, providing GPS pins, and documenting every genuine reaction, we're here to make the entire experience feel effortless.
If you're ready to start planning, explore our proposal galleries, browse real proposal stories, or reach out today. Together, we'll create a surprise proposal that's uniquely yours.
Final Thoughts
Southern California is home to some of the most beautiful proposal locations in the country, but the perfect proposal isn't defined by a specific beach or overlook. It's defined by the meaning behind the moment.
We've had the privilege of watching hundreds of couples begin their next chapter from the cliffs of La Jolla to the shores of Laguna Beach, and one thing has remained constant: the most memorable proposals are the ones that feel authentic to the couple, not the ones that simply follow the latest trend.
Whether your story begins in San Diego or Orange County, thoughtful planning, genuine emotion, and the right location will always matter more than choosing the "most popular" destination. If we can help make that moment unforgettable, we'd be honored to be part of your story.

Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Laguna Beach
Back in May, we received a message from Matt.
He was hoping to plan a surprise proposal within the next few days, ideally on a Sunday or Monday, and was considering either Orange County or somewhere in the California desert.
After talking through several locations and showing him examples from previous proposal experiences, one destination quickly stood above the rest:
Laguna Beach.
With dramatic coastal cliffs, ocean views, golden sunsets, and some of Southern California's most romantic scenery, Laguna Beach continues to be one of our favorite places for surprise proposals.
Once the location was selected, Matt mentioned he wanted something a little more memorable than simply dropping to one knee.
He envisioned flowers, candles, and a romantic setting that would make the moment feel truly special.
That led us to recommend our Signature Yes Floral Arch Experience.
The combination of a modern white arch, fresh florals, soft candlelight, and an intimate ocean backdrop created exactly the atmosphere he was hoping for.
He loved the idea.
Within a short time, everything was officially booked—and planning immediately began.
Why Planning Matters More Than Most People Think
One thing many couples never realize is that the proposal itself is only a small part of the entire experience.
The real work happens beforehand.
Over the following days, we worked closely with Matt to fine-tune every detail.
That included:
Selecting the exact proposal location for the best lighting.
Monitoring sunset timing.
Sending GPS pins with precise meeting instructions.
Building a detailed timeline.
Discussing parking and arrival recommendations.
Reviewing the proposal flow during our final planning call.
Coordinating décor setup before anyone arrived.
Our goal is simple:
When proposal day arrives, you shouldn't have to think about anything except asking the question.
We handle the logistics so you can stay fully present in one of the biggest moments of your life.
That philosophy is something we've built our proposal experiences around, and it's one reason so many couples trust us to help plan proposals throughout Laguna Beach, Orange County, San Diego, and Southern California.
The Proposal Day
Proposal day arrived with beautiful coastal weather and incredible ocean views.
Before Matt and Jessica arrived, we had everything prepared.
Their friends showed up a little early, giving us a chance to briefly introduce ourselves and coordinate the final details while keeping everything natural and relaxed.
The floral arch was in place.
The candles were glowing.
Everything was ready.
Soon afterward, Matt and Jessica made their way toward the proposal location.
As they approached the setup overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Matt took Jessica's hand, shared a few heartfelt words, and got down on one knee.
She said yes.
One of the things we love most about photographing surprise proposals is watching the emotions unfold naturally.
The excitement.
The disbelief.
The laughter.
The happy tears.
Those are the moments that can never be recreated, and they're exactly why we work so hard to make sure every detail is prepared long before anyone arrives.
Engagement Photos Along the Laguna Beach Coast
After celebrating the proposal, we spent the next hour exploring the coastline together for a relaxed engagement session.
With the pressure gone and the excitement still fresh, these are often some of our favorite photographs of the entire experience.
The dramatic cliffs, ocean breeze, and warm coastal light provided the perfect backdrop as Matt and Jessica enjoyed their first moments together as an engaged couple.
Rather than rushing through portraits, we focused on authentic interactions—walking together, laughing, taking in the views, and simply enjoying the milestone they had just experienced.
Those genuine moments always become the photographs couples treasure most.

Flying Into Forever | Arnold's Memorial Day Surprise Proposal at Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach
Arnold originally contacted us to photograph a surprise proposal in Palm Springs, but after weeks of planning, we secretly moved the date to Memorial Day and relocated the experience to Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach to keep the proposal a complete surprise. With our Signature Yes proposal arch overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Arnold got down on one knee as family members watched from nearby before celebrating with a golden-hour engagement session on Crescent Bay Beach. Behind every proposal we photograph are hours of planning, timeline creation, location scouting, lighting research, restaurant recommendations, and contingency planning. This Laguna Beach proposal story offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to create a seamless Southern California surprise proposal experience.
There are proposal photos that capture a moment.
Then there are proposal photos that tell a story.
The image of Arnold and his fiancée standing on the beach in Laguna Beach with their arms stretched wide, pretending to fly together, perfectly represents what their day felt like. It wasn't just about getting engaged—it was about stepping into a completely new chapter together.
For us at Last Minute Photoshoot, that's exactly what surprise proposal photography is supposed to preserve.
From the quiet anticipation before the proposal to the laughter that follows the "yes," every chapter deserves to be remembered. Laguna Beach offers some of Southern California's most breathtaking proposal locations, and we'll help you make the most of them with personalized planning, local expertise, discreet photography, and guidance every step of the way—so you can stay present while we capture the memories.
Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal
A Surprise Proposal That Started in Palm Springs
In the middle of May, Arnold reached out to us looking for a photographer to capture a surprise proposal near the end of the month in Palm Springs.
After several phone calls and planning sessions, we came up with a different idea.
To help keep the proposal a complete surprise, we actually moved the proposal date forward to Memorial Day, May 25, throwing his girlfriend completely off the trail.
Sometimes the best proposal planning isn't just choosing the perfect location.
It's creating enough uncertainty that your partner never suspects what's about to happen.
Choosing Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach
After discussing several Southern California proposal locations, we ultimately chose Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach.
Why?
Because Crescent Bay Park offers nearly everything couples look for when planning a proposal:
Incredible Pacific Ocean views
Elevated coastal bluffs
Beautiful golden-hour light
Easy transition to the beach afterward
One of the most romantic proposal locations in Orange County
Arnold also wanted something more elevated than a traditional proposal.
So together we planned our Signature Yes Proposal Experience, complete with our decorative arch, candles, florals, and styling to create a beautiful setting overlooking the ocean.
When everything came together, the location felt intimate, elegant, and timeless.
Memorial Day Weekend... What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
Holiday weekends and coastal California.
Most photographers immediately think:
Traffic.
Crowds.
Parking.
Chaos.
And honestly...
They'd be right.
We arrived early—as we always do—but still spent nearly an hour searching for parking.
Once we finally found a space, our vehicle ended up nearly half a mile away from the proposal site.
That meant multiple trips carrying the arch, flowers, décor, equipment, cameras, and everything else needed to create the experience Arnold envisioned.
Would we do it again?
Without hesitation.
Because while most people only see the final photographs...
We get to experience everything that happens before that first shutter click.
The Moment Everything Came Together
Once everything was set up, all that was left was to wait.
Arnold arrived exactly as planned.
Nearby, family members quietly hid out of sight, waiting for the big moment.
The couple walked directly toward the arch.
We began photographing.
Arnold got down on one knee.
She said yes.
Almost instantly, cheers erupted from family members nearby.
The surprise had worked perfectly.
Moments like these remind us why we love photographing surprise proposals throughout Laguna Beach and Southern California.
No two stories are ever the same.
But every genuine reaction feels unforgettable.
Golden Hour on Crescent Bay Beach
After celebrating at the proposal site, we walked down to Crescent Bay Beach for a short engagement session.
As the sun slowly disappeared behind the Pacific, we captured relaxed portraits together along the shoreline.
One of our favorite images happened completely naturally.
The two of them stretched their arms out like airplanes, laughing as they "flew" together across the sand.
It's playful.
It's authentic.
And somehow it perfectly symbolizes what engagement feels like.
Not just saying yes.
But flying into whatever comes next—together.
What Most Couples Never See
One of our favorite parts of our job actually happens long before the proposal.
Long before the cameras come out.
Long before anyone gets down on one knee.
Behind every successful surprise proposal are countless hours of preparation.
That often includes:
Building a personalized proposal timeline
Recommending the best proposal locations
Monitoring sunset timing and lighting
Helping choose the exact proposal position
Planning backup options
Researching nearby restaurants and celebration ideas
Walking clients through speeches, outfits, rings, and logistics
Coordinating with family members when they're involved
Preparing for weather, crowds, traffic, and holiday weekends
Photography is only one part of what we do.
Helping create an experience couples will remember forever is what truly drives us.
“Incredible Duo! Stephanie and Son made it a super smooth process and it went flawlessly!”

A Balboa Park Surprise Proposal Followed by Downtown San Diego Portraits | Makaila & Sam's Proposal Story
Looking for a Balboa Park proposal photographer or planning a surprise proposal in San Diego? Follow Makaila and Sam's unforgettable proposal story, from a carefully planned surprise at the iconic Pavilion in Balboa Park to romantic engagement portraits at Alcazar Garden and the Marriott in Downtown San Diego. Learn how we helped plan every detail, including the proposal timeline, cover story, GPS coordination, and natural proposal cues that kept the surprise alive. Whether you're local or visiting San Diego, discover why Balboa Park remains one of the best places to propose and how thoughtful planning creates unforgettable moments that last a lifetime.
When Makaila first reached out to us in mid-May, he already knew one thing.
He didn't want to propose on the beach.
While San Diego is famous for its coastline, not every couple pictures themselves getting engaged with waves crashing behind them. Some want timeless architecture, lush gardens, historic charm, and a little more privacy.
Balboa Park immediately became the perfect fit.
After a few conversations, we landed on a proposal at the Pavilion inside Balboa Park, followed by an engagement session around Alcazar Garden before finishing the evening with portraits at the Marriott in Downtown San Diego, where they were staying for the weekend.
It would become one of our favorite proposal stories of the season.
Planning the Perfect Balboa Park Surprise Proposal
One thing we always tell our couples is that the best surprise proposals feel natural.
The less forced the moment feels, the more genuine the emotions become.
For Makaila's proposal, we built a simple plan.
Steph and I would already be walking around Balboa Park like any other visitors.
As Makaila and Sam approached, we'd casually ask,
"Hey, would you mind taking a photo of us?"
After thanking them, we'd naturally offer to return the favor.
While posing them together, we'd quietly guide them into position.
Once everything looked perfect, we'd give Makaila the cue.
From there...
The moment belonged entirely to them.
The Moment Sam Realized What Was Happening
Everything unfolded exactly as planned.
When we first walked up, Sam immediately smiled and laughed.
"You picked the right person," she said.
"He's a photographer!"
We all laughed while doing everything we could to keep the surprise alive.
Makaila played it perfectly.
After taking our "photo," we handed the camera back and offered to take one of them together.
As they stood in front of the Pavilion surrounded by the beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture that makes Balboa Park one of San Diego's most iconic proposal locations, Makaila slowly stepped back.
Then he dropped to one knee.
The look on Sam's face said everything.
Pure surprise.
Pure happiness.
One of our favorite moments happened just seconds later.
Still processing everything, Sam turned toward us with the biggest smile and asked,
"Wait... you knew?"
We couldn't help but laugh.
Yes.
We've been keeping the secret for weeks.
Exploring Balboa Park After the Proposal
Once the excitement settled in, we gave the two of them a few quiet moments together before beginning their engagement portraits.
One of the reasons we love photographing surprise proposals at Balboa Park is how many incredible photo locations are within walking distance.
Over the next 30 to 40 minutes, we explored several of the park's most beautiful areas, including:
The Pavilion
Alcazar Garden
Historic walkways
Spanish Colonial architecture
Hidden corners filled with colorful flowers and greenery
Every turn offered another backdrop that felt completely different from the last.
It's one of the reasons Balboa Park continues to be one of our favorite places for surprise proposals in San Diego.
Ending the Evening in Downtown San Diego
The celebration didn't stop there.
After finishing at Balboa Park, we made our way to the Marriott in Downtown San Diego, where Makaila and Sam were spending the weekend together.
Hotels often become part of a proposal story.
They're where couples celebrate afterward, call family members, pop champagne, or simply take a breath and enjoy the moment together.
Capturing a second location gave their gallery a completely different look—from historic gardens and architecture to modern downtown elegance—all within the same evening.
Why We Love Planning Surprise Proposals in San Diego
Every proposal is different.
Some couples dream of ocean cliffs.
Others imagine gardens, architecture, city lights, or quiet parks.
One of the things we enjoy most is helping couples choose a location that actually reflects their relationship instead of simply recommending the most popular spot.
Whether that's Balboa Park, Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla, Coronado, Downtown San Diego, or somewhere completely unique, we help plan every detail—from choosing the location and creating a believable cover story to sharing GPS pins, proposal cues, timelines, and backup plans—so you can stay focused on the only question that matters.
Final Thoughts
If you're planning a surprise proposal in San Diego, we'd love to help make it unforgettable.
Whether you're local or traveling from out of town, we'll help you plan everything from start to finish—including selecting the perfect proposal location, building a personalized timeline, scouting the area beforehand, sharing GPS pins, creating a natural cover story, and documenting every genuine reaction along the way.
Your proposal only happens once.
Let's make sure it's a story you'll love telling for the rest of your lives.
A Sunset Cliffs Surprise Proposal That Almost Didn't Happen | Chris & Daniella's San Diego Proposal Story
Planning a Sunset Cliffs surprise proposal in San Diego takes more than showing up with a ring—it takes preparation, flexibility, and experience. Chris contacted us months before his proposal, and together we planned every detail, from GPS meeting points and proposal cues to backup plans. When heavy winter rains left our original proposal location unsafe, we quickly found a nearby overlook with the same breathtaking Pacific Ocean views. The proposal went exactly as planned, and Daniella said yes. Follow along as we share how we planned this unforgettable Sunset Cliffs proposal, the behind-the-scenes decisions that made it successful, and expert planning tips for anyone searching for a trusted San Diego proposal photographer or planning their own surprise engagement.
When Chris first reached out to us in early April, his message was simple:
"Hey, my name is Chris. I'm looking to propose to my girlfriend while we're down in San Diego on April 25. Hoping we can plan something out."
Those messages are some of our favorites to receive.
Because surprise proposals are incredibly time-sensitive, we replied immediately—something we've become known for over the years. Within a few conversations, we had learned about Chris, discussed several proposal locations around San Diego, answered his questions, and helped him choose Sunset Cliffs as the perfect place to ask one of the biggest questions of his life.
That same day, Chris officially booked us.
Sometimes the best decision isn't pushing forward—it's waiting until the moment feels right. We know proposal plans don't always go exactly as expected. Illness, weather, travel delays, and unexpected life events happen. That's why we're here to help adjust timelines, coordinate new plans, and make sure that when the day finally arrives, you can focus on the moment instead of the logistics.
Choose Your Proposal Experience
Sometimes the Best Proposal Plans Require Patience
Everything was scheduled for April 25.
The timeline was complete.
The GPS location was shared.
The cover story was planned.
Then life happened.
A few days before the proposal, Daniella came down with a cold. Rather than forcing the moment, Chris made the decision to postpone the proposal until she felt better.
Looking back, it was the right call.
A proposal only happens once, and it's worth waiting until both people can fully enjoy it.
Several weeks later, we picked up exactly where we left off and began preparing for their new June proposal date.
Our Sunset Cliffs Proposal Plan
One of the biggest reasons couples hire us isn't just for photography—it's because we help remove as much uncertainty as possible.
For Chris, the plan was intentionally simple.
He would walk to the GPS location we'd already shared.
Steph and I would already be nearby blending into the scenery.
As he approached, he'd casually ask,
"Would you mind taking a photo of us?"
We'd happily agree, help pose them naturally, and after taking a few photos we'd give him the cue we'd practiced beforehand.
That was his signal.
Everything after that belonged to Chris and Daniella.
The speech.
The ring.
The emotion.
Our job was simply to disappear into the background and document it.
Even After Hundreds of Proposals, We Still Get Nervous
People often ask if photographing surprise proposals gets easier.
The answer?
Not really.
Even after documenting countless proposals across Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla, Balboa Park, Laguna Beach, Joshua Tree, and throughout Southern California, Steph and I still feel butterflies before every single one.
Not because we're unsure of the plan.
Because we genuinely care.
We know months of planning often lead up to these few minutes.
Family members are waiting for updates.
Flights have been booked.
Dinner reservations are scheduled.
A ring has been hidden for weeks.
There are no do-overs.
Every proposal matters just as much as the first one we ever photographed.
An Unexpected Challenge at Sunset Cliffs
As we always do, we arrived about an hour early.
Early arrival gives us time to scout the location, monitor lighting, and make adjustments before our clients arrive.
That habit ended up making all the difference.
The exact section of Sunset Cliffs where we'd originally planned for Chris to propose had recently been closed off with warning signs.
Months of heavy rain had caused noticeable cracks along the cliff edge, and portions of the area were considered unstable.
Instead of forcing the original plan, we immediately started looking for alternatives.
Fortunately, only a short walk away we found another overlook that offered nearly the same iconic Pacific Ocean backdrop while providing a much safer location.
We sent Chris an update before he arrived, explained the situation, and adjusted the GPS meeting point.
The proposal experience stayed exactly the same.
Only the location shifted a few yards.
That's why arriving early—and knowing the area well—is such an important part of planning a surprise proposal at Sunset Cliffs.
The Moment Everything Came Together
Soon enough we spotted Chris and Daniella walking toward us.
They smiled.
Chris asked if we could take their photo.
Exactly as planned.
We positioned them toward the ocean, snapped a few natural images, then delivered the cue we'd rehearsed.
Chris took a deep breath.
He began his proposal.
A few moments later, he was down on one knee.
The nerves disappeared.
The tears showed up.
And Daniella said yes.
Those few minutes are why we love photographing surprise proposals.
Every couple has a different story, but the feeling in that moment is always unforgettable.
A Last-Minute Surprise Proposal at La Jolla Coastal Trail | Nathan & Breanna's La Jolla Cove Proposal Story
When Nathan reached out just two days before flying from Maryland to Southern California, he needed help planning a surprise proposal at La Jolla Coastal Trail near La Jolla Cove. Together, we quickly finalized a proposal location, timeline, cover story, and photography plan. On the morning of the proposal, the iconic La Jolla marine layer created soft, beautiful light as Nathan and Breanna arrived at the cliffside overlook. With a subtle thumbs-up behind his back, Nathan signaled he was ready. Moments later, he got down on one knee overlooking the Pacific Ocean and asked Breanna to marry him. This La Jolla surprise proposal showcases how a perfectly planned engagement can come together in less than 72 hours with the right preparation, local expertise, and proposal photography team.
Some proposal stories begin months in advance.
Others begin with a phone call.
Nathan and Breanna's surprise proposal at La Jolla Coastal Trail started just two days before he planned to ask one of the biggest questions of his life.
Late in May, we received a phone call from Nathan. He was flying in from Maryland with his then-girlfriend Breanna and wanted to know if we could help him plan a surprise proposal in La Jolla.
His timeline was tight.
He would be arriving in Southern California in just a couple of days and needed help finding the perfect location, creating a believable cover story, and making sure everything went smoothly.
Fortunately, planning last-minute proposals is exactly what we do.
By that evening, Nathan's proposal was officially booked and we had already finalized the exact proposal location, built a custom timeline, discussed logistics, created a cover story, and gone through our proposal planning checklist together.
Everything was set.
Now all we had to do was execute the plan.
Preparing for a Morning Proposal at La Jolla Coastal Trail
The days leading up to Nathan's proposal were busy ones for us.
Steph and I had a packed weekend filled with engagement sessions and surprise proposals throughout Southern California. Despite the busy schedule, we made sure we were prepared and ready long before Nathan and Breanna arrived.
On the morning of the proposal, we woke up early, packed our gear, and headed toward La Jolla Cove.
We sent Nathan our GPS location and confirmed that we would be at the proposal spot by 9:00 AM.
When we arrived, we couldn't have asked for better conditions.
The famous La Jolla marine layer had rolled in overnight, creating the soft overcast skies that photographers love. The clouds acted like a giant natural diffuser, producing beautiful, even light without harsh shadows.
Combined with the ocean views, rugged coastline, and dramatic cliffs of La Jolla Coastal Trail, it was the perfect setting for a surprise proposal.
The Moment Nathan Proposed
As Nathan and Breanna made their way down the trail, Steph and I slipped into our usual undercover role.
To everyone around us, we were simply another couple out enjoying the morning and taking photos along the coast.
Nathan knew exactly what to do.
As they approached the proposal location, he casually gave us a thumbs-up behind his back—the signal we had agreed on beforehand that he was ready.
The moment we saw the cue, we shifted our cameras toward them and got ready.
A few steps later, Nathan stopped.
Breanna looked over at him.
Then he got down on one knee.
The expression on her face said everything.
Shock.
Excitement.
Joy.
And within seconds, she said yes.
Those are the moments that make surprise proposals so special. No matter how many we photograph each year, seeing two people reach such an important milestone never gets old.
Engagement Photos Around La Jolla Cove
After the proposal, we gave Nathan and Breanna a few moments to soak everything in before beginning their engagement session.
One of the advantages of proposing at La Jolla Coastal Trail is the variety of scenery within a short walking distance.
We spent the next hour exploring the area and creating engagement portraits featuring:
The cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean
Coastal walking paths
Panoramic ocean views
Natural sandstone formations
The iconic La Jolla shoreline
Because the proposal took place in the morning, we were able to enjoy quieter trails and fewer crowds than what is typically seen during sunset hours.
The overcast conditions continued to work in our favor, creating timeless and natural-looking images throughout the entire session.
Nathan's Feedback After Receiving His Photos
A few days later, after Nathan and Breanna received their gallery and edited images, Nathan sent us a message that completely made our day:
"These are incredible!! We will be recommending you to everyone we know, and look forward to writing a glowing review. You guys have been truly the best photographers I've worked with, it's been a real pleasure. Thank you for everything."
Messages like this remind us why we love what we do.
Photography is about much more than creating beautiful images.
It's about helping people navigate one of the most important moments of their lives, removing stress, creating a seamless experience, and preserving memories they'll revisit for decades.
Knowing our clients feel cared for throughout the process makes every early morning, every mile traveled, and every late-night editing session worth it.
Final Thoughts
Nathan's proposal is proof that an incredible engagement doesn't require months of planning.
With the right preparation, local knowledge, and experienced proposal team, a surprise proposal can come together in less than 72 hours and still feel thoughtful, personal, and unforgettable.

A Last-Minute Surprise Proposal at Keys View in Joshua Tree National Park | Dvir & Shay's Sunset Proposal Story
When Dvir reached out to us in mid-May, he had a challenge many destination couples face: he was traveling from New York to Joshua Tree with Shay and only had one evening to make his surprise proposal happen. After reviewing several locations throughout Joshua Tree National Park, we chose Keys View for its panoramic views of the Coachella Valley, San Andreas Fault, Salton Sea, and surrounding mountain ranges. Using a simple cover story and a carefully planned photography cue, Dvir got down on one knee as the desert sunset painted the sky with incredible color. Shay said yes, and we spent the next hour creating engagement portraits while chasing golden light across one of the most iconic viewpoints in Southern California.
Some proposals are planned for months.
Others come together in a matter of days.
Dvir and Shay's surprise proposal in Joshua Tree National Park was one of those stories.
In mid-May, we received a message from Dvir. He and Shay would be traveling from New York to Southern California and only had one opportunity to make their proposal plans work. He was looking for a photographer familiar with Joshua Tree National Park who could help him plan, coordinate, and discreetly capture one of the biggest moments of their lives.
As a husband-and-wife photography team that regularly photographs surprise proposals throughout Southern California, we immediately started brainstorming ideas.
After Dvir officially booked with us, we sent over several proposal galleries, location suggestions, and examples of previous Joshua Tree sessions. Our goal wasn't simply to photograph the proposal—it was to help create a seamless experience from start to finish.
Perched high above the Coachella Valley, Keys View offers one of the most breathtaking proposal locations in Southern California. If you're traveling to Joshua Tree, Palm Springs, or Southern California and looking for a meaningful place to propose, we'll help you navigate the logistics, timing, photography, and planning so you can focus on the moment itself while we handle the details behind the scenes.
Choose Your Proposal Experience
Why We Chose Keys View for the Proposal
After discussing several options throughout Joshua Tree National Park, we ultimately landed on Keys View.
It's one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Southern California and one of our favorite locations for destination proposals.
From the overlook, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Coachella Valley, the San Andreas Fault, the Salton Sea, and the surrounding mountain ranges stretching across the horizon.
For couples visiting Joshua Tree for the first time, Keys View offers something unique: an epic landscape without requiring a long hike. It combines accessibility, privacy, and some of the most dramatic scenery in the park.
The moment Dvir saw the photos, he knew it was the place.
Creating the Perfect Cover Story
Like many surprise proposals, the success of the plan depended on keeping everything natural.
Our cover story was simple.
Dvir told Shay that they were heading to Keys View to watch the sunset and enjoy the incredible views during their trip.
Meanwhile, Stephanie and I arrived early.
Because it was a busy holiday weekend, we wanted plenty of time to secure parking, scout the area, monitor the lighting conditions, and make sure everything was ready before they arrived.
When Dvir and Shay walked up to the overlook, the plan was for him to casually approach us and ask if we could take a photo of them together.
This is one of our favorite proposal strategies because it feels completely natural and never raises suspicion.
We happily agreed.
The Moment Shay Said Yes
We positioned them overlooking the valley below.
As photographers, we often guide couples into a few simple poses before the proposal to make everything feel authentic and comfortable.
We asked them to stand together.
Then we asked them to face one another.
Finally, we asked them to hold hands and look into each other's eyes.
That was Dvir's cue.
He began sharing his proposal speech, talking directly to Shay while Stephanie and I documented every reaction.
Moments later, he got down on one knee.
Shay immediately realized what was happening.
And she said yes.
The overlook erupted with excitement as the newly engaged couple celebrated together against one of the most iconic views in California.
Chasing Golden Hour Across Keys View
One of the advantages of booking a longer proposal session is the opportunity to create engagement portraits immediately afterward.
With the pressure of the proposal behind them, Dvir and Shay were able to relax and simply enjoy the moment.
For the next hour, we explored several areas around Keys View, following the changing light as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon.
The conditions couldn't have been better.
Soft golden light illuminated the mountains, warm colors filled the sky, and the desert landscape created a stunning backdrop for every image.
As photographers, these are the evenings we live for.
A beautiful location.
A genuine love story.
And a couple fully present in one of the most important moments of their lives.
Planning a Surprise Proposal in Joshua Tree National Park
If you're considering proposing in Joshua Tree National Park, Keys View remains one of our top recommendations.
It offers:
Panoramic views of the Coachella Valley
Views of the San Andreas Fault and Salton Sea
Incredible sunset opportunities
Easy accessibility for couples of all ages
A natural setting for surprise proposals
Stunning engagement photos immediately afterward
For destination couples traveling to Southern California, Joshua Tree continues to be one of the most unique proposal locations in the state.
What Dvir Had to Say
After receiving his gallery, Dvir shared this review with us:
"Everything was perfect from the very first message and reminder a week in advance, to speaking with several photographers before the event. The pricing was the fairest we found for such a high level of quality.
Amazing attitude, incredible patience, and they never made us feel rushed or limited on time.
Thank you so much for helping us memorize our moments so beautifully!"
— D.L.

What a Week Looked Like at Last Minute Photoshoot: 4 Proposals, 1 Wedding, 1 Engagement Session, and a Camera Failure We Didn't See Coming
Most people only see the final photos, but every proposal, wedding, and engagement session begins long before the camera comes out. In this behind-the-scenes look at a week with Last Minute Photoshoot, we're sharing the reality of photographing 4 surprise proposals, 1 wedding, 1 engagement session, scouting a new proposal location in Lake Arrowhead, and dealing with a camera failure just minutes before a proposal at Seal Rock in La Jolla. From planning timelines and scouting locations to problem solving under pressure, this story highlights what happens when things don't go according to plan—and why showing up for your clients matters more than perfect equipment. A candid look at proposal photography, resilience, and the lessons learned along the way.
Most people see the photos.
They see the proposal.
They see the wedding.
They see the engagement session.
What most people don't see are the days and weeks leading up to those moments.
Before every proposal, wedding, or engagement session, there are phone calls, text messages, planning sessions, location scouting, timeline creation, GPS pins, backup plans, restaurant recommendations, and countless conversations behind the scenes.
Sometimes we're helping a client choose between Laguna Beach and La Jolla.
Other times we're scouting a new location we've never photographed before.
Sometimes we're helping someone figure out how to propose without their partner finding out.
The work starts long before the camera ever comes out.
That's how we prepare.
And although we prepare as much as we can, every once in a while something happens that reminds you that not everything is within your control.
Last week was one of those weeks.
Behind every proposal, wedding, and engagement session is a story most people never see. This week included four surprise proposals, one wedding, one engagement session, thousands of photos, countless miles on the road, and a camera failure that happened minutes before a proposal. It was a reminder that photography isn't just about taking beautiful photos—it's about staying calm when things go sideways, adapting on the fly, and doing everything possible to deliver for the people who trusted us with some of the biggest moments of their lives.

The Proposal That Almost Didn't Happen
A few minutes before we were scheduled to photograph a surprise proposal at Seal Rock in La Jolla, our Sony A7 III stopped working.
No warning.
No strange noises.
Nothing.
Just a black screen.
The shutter was completely closed.
We removed the lens.
Removed the battery.
Removed the SD cards.
Waited.
Put everything back together.
Tried again.
Nothing.
Repeated the process.
Still nothing.
The black screen of death said it all.
If you're a photographer, you probably know the feeling.
Your stomach drops.
Your heart starts racing.
Your mind immediately starts trying to solve a problem that doesn't seem to have a solution.
The worst part?
We didn't have a backup camera.
That's on us.
We had photographed multiple sessions leading up to that day and had tested the camera beforehand. Everything was working perfectly.
Until it wasn't.
The Text Message Nobody Wants To Send
At first, I texted our client:
"Hey, give us a few minutes. We're having some technical difficulties."
He replied:
"No problem."
One minute turned into five.
Five minutes turned into ten.
Ten turned into twenty.
Then the text came:
"Are we good?"
I remember staring at my phone wondering how to even explain what was happening.
Finally, I sent the message.
"Hey, I'm not really sure how to say this, so I'm just going to be blunt. Our camera isn't working. We can photograph your proposal on our iPhone, and we'll offer a full refund."
A few moments later he replied:
"Okay. We'll figure out the refund later."
Then he walked out of the restaurant.
Our First Proposal Shot on an iPhone
This was a first for us.
As the client made his way toward Seal Rock, we positioned ourselves from a distance and started photographing with our iPhone.
We stayed undercover.
We blended into the environment.
And when the moment arrived, we captured it.
He got down on one knee.
She said yes.
The proposal happened.
The story continued.
Afterward, we all laughed about it.
But if we're being honest?
Steph and I were crushed inside.
We felt like we had let our clients down.
As photographers, you take pride in showing up prepared.
When something outside of your control affects a client experience, it's hard not to take it personally.
But we still had a job to do.
So we smiled.
We stayed positive.
We focused on creating the best experience possible.
Because at that point, the proposal wasn't about us.
It was about them.
We Found a Solution
After talking everything through, we gave our clients a few options.
A full refund.
Credit toward their wedding.
Or an engagement session while they were still in town.
They chose the engagement session.
A few days later we met up again and photographed their engagement photos.
Looking back, we're grateful the experience happened.
Not because it was fun.
It definitely wasn't.
But because it reminded us of something important.
Problems happen.
Equipment fails.
Plans change.
What matters most is how you respond when things don't go according to plan.
The client kept telling us:
"It's about the story."
"It's about the experience."
And honestly, he was right.
We sure do have some amazing clients.
The Lesson We Learned
The moment we got home, we started looking for another camera body.
Now we have two cameras.
And moving forward, we'll always have two cameras with us.
Some lessons are expensive.
Some lessons are stressful.
Some lessons become turning points.
This was one of those lessons.
And That Was Just the Beginning of the Week
Believe it or not, the camera failure happened at the beginning of the week.
After that, we still had:
4 surprise proposals
1 engagement session
1 wedding
A scouting trip to Lake Arrowhead for an upcoming proposal
Countless client calls, texts, timelines, and planning sessions
It was one of the busiest weeks we've had in a while.
And one of the most memorable.
Why We Love What We Do
If we didn't genuinely love this job, a week like this probably would have crushed us.
Instead, it reminded us why we do it.
We get to witness some of the biggest moments in people's lives.
We get trusted with memories that can never be recreated.
We get invited into stories we'll never forget.
Even on the difficult days, that's a privilege we don't take lightly.
To Our Clients, Thank You
To every couple who trusted us this week, thank you.
Thank you for your patience.
Thank you for your understanding.
Thank you for allowing us to be part of your story.
We know how important these moments are.
And we never take that responsibility for granted.
And To Anyone Reading This...
If you somehow found this blog, thank you.
Maybe you're planning a proposal.
Maybe you're getting married.
Maybe you're just browsing through our website.
Or maybe you're going through something difficult in your own life right now.
Whatever brought you here, we're glad you're here.
If there's one thing last week reminded us, it's that setbacks happen.
Sometimes they happen at the worst possible moment.
Sometimes they feel impossible to solve.
But you keep moving forward.
You find a solution.
You learn from it.
And eventually, what felt like a disaster becomes part of the story.
We've been through too much to stop now.
And if you're going through something difficult too, keep going.
Things have a way of working themselves out.
Thank you for reading.
Thank you for following along.
And thank you for supporting our small business.
It means more than you'll ever know.
How to Plan a Secret Summer Proposal Without Them Knowing
Planning a surprise proposal this summer but worried your partner might figure it out? In this guide, we share real-world proposal planning tips based on hundreds of surprise proposals we've helped coordinate and photograph throughout Southern California. Learn how to choose the right location, create a believable cover story, plan a full day of activities, avoid common mistakes, and keep the proposal a complete surprise. We also share some of our favorite proposal locations in Laguna Beach, San Diego, La Jolla, Newport Beach, Malibu, Temecula Wine Country, Joshua Tree, and Idyllwild. Whether you're planning a beach proposal, luxury picnic proposal, winery proposal, or destination engagement, this guide will help you create a meaningful proposal experience they'll never see coming.
Updated Summer 2026: The recommendations in this guide are based on real surprise proposals we've photographed and helped plan throughout Laguna Beach, San Diego, La Jolla, Newport Beach, Malibu, Temecula Wine Country, Joshua Tree, Idyllwild, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Southern California.
One of the most common questions we get from clients is:
"How do I pull off a surprise proposal without my partner figuring it out?"
The good news?
Most surprise proposals are easier to keep secret than people think.
The challenge isn't finding the perfect ring or choosing the perfect location.
The challenge is creating a believable plan that doesn't raise suspicion.
After helping plan and photograph hundreds of surprise proposals throughout Southern California, we've learned a few things about what works—and what accidentally gives the surprise away.
Most proposal planners have the same concern: "How do I keep this a surprise?" After helping hundreds of couples plan surprise proposals across Southern California, we've learned that the secret isn't luck—it's having a solid plan. We'll help with location ideas, proposal strategy, timelines, dinner recommendations, reservations, and day-of coordination so your partner never suspects a thing.
Choose Your Proposal Experience
Start With Something That Feels Normal
One of the biggest mistakes people make is suddenly becoming overly romantic.
If you've never planned a luxury picnic, booked a fancy dinner, or suggested a sunset beach walk before, doing all three on the same day might raise a few eyebrows.
The best surprise proposals usually happen during activities that already fit your relationship.
Ask yourself:
What would feel normal for us?
What do we already enjoy doing together?
What wouldn't seem out of character?
The more natural the plan feels, the easier it is to keep the proposal a secret.
Choose a Location With Multiple Reasons To Visit
One of our favorite strategies is selecting locations where a proposal isn't the only reason someone might be there.
For example:
Laguna Beach
La Jolla
Balboa Park
Temecula Wine Country
Joshua Tree National Park
Newport Beach
Malibu
Idyllwild
Each location offers restaurants, sightseeing, hiking, beaches, museums, wineries, shopping, and other activities.
Your partner should believe you're there for the experience—not necessarily the proposal.
Build a Full Day Instead of a Single Moment
Many of our most successful proposals happen when the proposal is simply one part of a larger day.
For example:
Coffee in the morning
Exploring a coastal town
Lunch
Shopping or a museum visit
Beach walk or wine tasting
Proposal at sunset
Dinner reservations afterward
Because there are multiple activities planned, the proposal feels less predictable.
It also creates a more memorable experience overall.
You Don't Have To Plan Everything Yourself
One thing many people are surprised to learn is that when they book us, they're not just hiring photographers.
They're getting proposal planning help too.
Over the years, we've helped hundreds of couples plan surprise proposals throughout Southern California, and we've learned that most people don't know where to start.
That's completely normal.
We'll help you narrow down locations, recommend activities for the day, suggest restaurants, help make dinner reservations, create a personalized timeline, scout locations, provide GPS guidance, discuss backup plans, and help create a believable cover story that keeps the surprise intact.
Some clients already know exactly where they want to propose.
Others simply tell us:
"I know I want to propose, but I have no idea where."
Either way, we'll help guide you through the process.
Whether you're considering Laguna Beach, La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs, Temecula Wine Country, Joshua Tree, Newport Beach, Malibu, or another Southern California destination, we'll help you create a plan that feels natural and authentic to your relationship.
Our goal is to make planning feel easy so you can focus on your partner while we handle the details behind the scenes.
And when the moment finally arrives, we'll be there to quietly capture the proposal and everything that happens afterward.
Create a Simple Cover Story
The best cover stories are simple.
Complicated stories usually fall apart.
Some examples we've seen work:
"Let's go watch the sunset."
"I found a cool hiking trail."
"Let's grab dinner by the beach."
"I booked us a wine tasting."
"I heard this park has amazing views."
"Let's spend the day exploring Laguna Beach."
Simple is believable.
Believable keeps the surprise alive.
Have a Backup Plan
Summer weather is generally beautiful throughout Southern California, but surprises happen.
Parking fills up.
Trails close.
Tides change.
Fog rolls in.
One of the reasons we scout locations and help build proposal timelines is so we can identify backup options before proposal day arrives.
Most couples never need a backup plan.
But having one helps remove unnecessary stress and allows you to focus on the moment.
How We Secretly Capture Your Proposal
This is another concern we hear all the time:
"What if my partner notices the photographer?"
The truth is that most people aren't looking for photographers.
Many of our surprise proposals begin with us blending into the environment.
Sometimes we're tourists enjoying the view.
Sometimes we're taking landscape photos.
Sometimes we're casually walking through the area.
The goal is to keep everything feeling natural until the moment arrives.
Once you're in position and ready, we'll already know exactly where to be so we can capture the proposal without interrupting the experience.
Most of the time, your partner won't realize we're there until after the proposal happens.
Some of Our Favorite Summer Proposal Locations
If you're still deciding where to propose, here are some of our favorite locations throughout Southern California:

The Secret To A Great Proposal
After photographing hundreds of proposals, we've noticed something interesting.
The proposals people remember most aren't always the most expensive.
They aren't always the most elaborate.
They're the ones that feel personal.
The best proposals reflect the couple's story.
The location matters.
The details matter.
But what matters most is creating a moment that feels like the two of you.

We'll recommend locations, suggest activities, help with restaurant reservations, create a timeline, scout the area, coordinate proposal logistics, and photograph the entire experience from the proposal itself through your engagement portraits afterward.

Because the best surprise proposals are the ones they never see coming.
