And unlike Joshua Tree, you can transition quickly from your proposal into restaurants, hotels, drinks, or another activity without spending significant time driving through a national park.

We'd lean toward Palm Springs if you want:

Restaurants and nightlife
Botanical gardens
Boutique hotels
Easy activities before and after the proposal
Less wilderness
A proposal that can become part of a complete vacation
It's also a strong choice when one partner doesn't necessarily enjoy hiking or rugged outdoor environments.
You can still get the desert feeling without making your proposal an expedition.
Palm Desert Proposals: Best for Luxury, Resorts & Convenience
Palm Desert is where we'd look if you told us:
"I want the desert and mountains, but I also want everything to feel easy."
Our experience planning Mohamed and Jenny's proposal at JW Marriott Desert Springs showed us exactly why Palm Desert can work so well.

For pure convenience, Palm Desert might be our favorite of the three.
Joshua Tree Proposals: Best for Adventure & Epic Desert Scenery
Then there's Joshua Tree.
This is where you go when the landscape itself is the experience.
Once you're inside Joshua Tree National Park, the experience is completely different from Palm Springs or Palm Desert.
No resort lobby.
No restaurant around the corner.
No valet.
You're trading those conveniences for something else:
Joshua trees.
Rock formations.
Open desert.
Mountain views.
Long roads disappearing into the landscape.
And incredible sunsets.
That's exactly why people fall in love with proposing here.
Why Joshua Tree Photographs So Differently
Joshua Tree gives you enormous natural backgrounds.
Instead of photographing around buildings and resort guests, we're often working with the landscape itself.
That creates proposal photographs that can feel cinematic, adventurous, and completely removed from the city.
For couples who love national parks, road trips, hiking, camping, or simply being outdoors, it's hard to replicate that experience somewhere else.
Keys View for a Surprise Proposal
One of our favorite Joshua Tree proposal experiences happened at Keys View.
There's something special about arriving at an overlook where the landscape stretches out in front of you and realizing:
This is where I'm going to ask someone to marry me.
But Joshua Tree requires more preparation.
We need to think about:
Driving.
Parking.
Walking.
Sunset.
Weather.
Water.
Cell service.
Where everyone will meet.
And exactly where the photographer will be positioned.
There isn't always an easy Plan B five minutes away.
Joshua Tree Requires More Preparation
This is probably the biggest difference between Joshua Tree and the other two destinations.
Inside the national park, amenities are limited and cell service can be unreliable.
That's why we like to have things figured out before anyone arrives.
GPS pins.
Screenshots.
Timelines.
Meeting locations.
Backup instructions.
You don't want the success of your proposal depending on a text saying:
"Where are you?"
when nobody has service.
Summer Proposals in Joshua Tree Require Extra Planning
Summer heat should be taken seriously.
If you're proposing during the warmer months, we'd strongly recommend planning around the cooler parts of the day whenever possible.
For photography, this usually works in our favor anyway.
Early mornings and the period leading into sunset generally provide more comfortable conditions and more flattering light than the middle of the afternoon.
Bring water.
Wear appropriate shoes.
Understand how far you're walking.
And don't underestimate the desert.
Your proposal should feel adventurous.
It shouldn't feel dangerous.
What About Proposal Permits in Joshua Tree?
Rules depend on exactly what you're planning.
A simple proposal with a photographer is different from a formal wedding, elopement, ceremony, large setup, or activity requiring exclusive use of an area.
National park regulations can also change.
That's why we'd always recommend checking the current Joshua Tree National Park rules directly before your proposal rather than relying on an old blog post or social media video.

For couples who want restaurants, architecture, hotels, activities, culture, and desert scenery all in one trip, Palm Springs is hard to beat.
What About the Weather?
All three destinations are desert environments.
That means timing matters.
For most proposal photography, we prefer getting closer to golden hour rather than proposing in harsh midday sunlight.
During summer, this becomes even more important.
Palm Springs and Palm Desert have one major advantage during hotter months:
You can spend much of the day inside a hotel, restaurant, spa, or another air-conditioned environment before stepping outside closer to proposal time.
Joshua Tree doesn't give you that same flexibility once you're inside the park.
That's something we'd strongly consider when choosing between the three.
What If You're Visiting From Out of Town?
Then we'd think beyond the proposal itself.
Ask:
What do we want the entire trip to feel like?
If you want:
Pool + cocktails + restaurants + architecture + proposal
Choose Palm Springs.
If you want:
Resort + spa + golf + dinner + proposal
Choose Palm Desert.
If you want:
Road trip + hiking + sunset + stars + proposal
Choose Joshua Tree.
Sometimes that's a much easier way to make the decision.
Our Pick Isn't Always the Same
We wouldn't recommend Joshua Tree to every couple just because the photographs can be incredible.
And we wouldn't recommend JW Marriott Desert Springs to every couple just because it's convenient.
The proposal should match you.
If your partner hates hiking, don't drag them through the desert because you saw a beautiful proposal photograph online.
If your partner loves national parks and outdoor adventures, proposing at an upscale resort might not feel like your story.
If you both love restaurants, architecture, boutique hotels, pools, and weekend getaways, Palm Springs might make perfect sense.
The best proposal location isn't necessarily the most famous one.
It's the one that feels most like the two of you.

The resort has been a desert destination for more than three decades and covers approximately 450 acres.
What makes it particularly interesting for a proposal is the variety.
You aren't limited to one backdrop.

If you're flying into the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is the closest major airport. Marriott lists the airport at approximately 12.2 miles from the resort.
If you're driving from the greater Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, or San Diego areas, build additional time into your proposal timeline.
Traffic can change quickly.
For a surprise proposal, we'd much rather see someone arrive 30 minutes early than be watching the sunset from Interstate 10 with an engagement ring in their pocket.
Parking at JW Marriott Desert Springs
One important detail to know beforehand:
Parking is not free.
As of 2026, Marriott currently lists:
Self-parking: $18 hourly or $29 daily
Valet parking: $45 daily
The property also has electric vehicle charging, including Tesla charging stations in the covered self-parking garage.
Parking prices can change, so we'd recommend checking directly with the resort shortly before your visit.
For proposals, we generally recommend building parking time directly into your timeline.
Don't plan to arrive at 6:00 PM for a 6:05 PM proposal.
You still need to park.
Walk through the property.
Possibly meet your photographer.
And get to the proposal location without looking like you're rushing somewhere.
Our Favorite Proposal Location: Flamingo Island
If we had to choose one area for a proposal at JW Marriott Desert Springs, Flamingo Island would be one of our first choices.
It's one of the features that makes this resort feel completely different from other Palm Desert proposal locations.
Flamingo Island is located near the 16th tee of the Palm Course, where the resort's famous pink flamingos live nearby.
From a photography perspective, you can incorporate:
Flamingos
Water
Palm trees
Greenery
Desert scenery
Mountain views
Sunset light
The combination creates photographs that immediately feel like Palm Desert.
It's also completely different from proposing in the open desert at Joshua Tree.
Joshua Tree feels rugged and adventurous.
Flamingo Island feels polished, tropical, and resort-oriented.
Neither is better.
They're simply different experiences.
Other Places to Consider Around the Resort
Flamingo Island isn't your only option.
That's one of JW Marriott Desert Springs' biggest advantages.
Depending on lighting, crowds, resort activity, and what kind of proposal you want, other landscaped areas around the waterways and property may work beautifully.
When we scout a proposal here, we're looking for several things:
Privacy
Can you have a genuine moment without dozens of people walking directly behind you?
Lighting
Where will the sun actually be when you propose?
Background
Are we photographing mountains, water, palm trees, the resort, or a combination?
Approach
Can we naturally get you into position without making your partner suspicious?
Exit route
Where do we go immediately afterward for engagement photos?
Those details matter more than simply choosing the prettiest location on Google Images.
Use the Boat Ride as Part of the Proposal Experience
One of the most unique activities at JW Marriott Desert Springs is its boat experience.
The resort offers boat tours through its waterways, which can become part of the proposal story rather than simply transportation.
For Mohamed and Jenny's proposal, we incorporated the boat ride into their experience.
Our plan allowed us to capture discreet candid photographs before transitioning toward Flamingo Island for the actual proposal.
It made the evening feel like an experience rather than:
"We're walking over here because I secretly need you standing in this exact location."
That's one of our favorite proposal-planning tricks.
When possible, build the proposal into something you're already doing together.
Dinner.
A walk.
A picnic.
A boat ride.
A hike.
A family photoshoot.
The proposal feels much more natural when your partner believes there's another reason for being there.
Give Yourself More Walking Time Than You Think
This is a big one.
JW Marriott Desert Springs is large.
Don't assume that because two locations appear close together on a map you'll reach them immediately.
You'll encounter:
Walkways
Resort buildings
Waterways
Golf areas
Landscaping
Other guests
Comfortable shoes are a good idea if you're planning to explore before or after the proposal.
And if you're wearing dress shoes or heels, consider how much walking you're realistically comfortable doing.
We'd rather design a proposal around your actual experience than create a timeline that looks perfect on paper but feels exhausting in real life.
When Is the Best Time to Propose?
For photography, we generally prefer late afternoon through sunset.
The exact timing changes throughout the year.
In summer, sunsets happen much later.
In winter, you'll need to plan significantly earlier.
Our preference is often to have the actual proposal happen roughly 30-60 minutes before sunset.
That gives you time to enjoy the proposal and still use the remaining golden-hour light for engagement portraits.
However, there's another major factor in Palm Desert:
Heat.
Summer temperatures can be intense.
If you're proposing during the warmer months, avoiding the middle of the afternoon can make the experience significantly more comfortable.
Your proposal should feel romantic.
Not like you're both trying to survive the desert.
Turn the Proposal Into a Full Date
One of the strongest reasons to choose JW Marriott Desert Springs is everything available before and after the proposal.
You don't necessarily need to leave the property.
A proposal day could look something like this:

Current resort dining includes options such as:
Rockwood Grill
A relaxed American restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
This can work well if you want a traditional sit-down meal before or after the proposal.
Mikado Japanese Steakhouse
One of the resort's more memorable dining experiences, featuring Japanese teppanyaki-style dining and sushi.
This could make a fun celebratory dinner after your partner says yes.
Fisherman's Landing
A seafood-focused option serving dishes including seafood, steaks, sandwiches, soups, salads, and raw-bar selections.
Aquifer65 & JW Sushi Bar
Located around the lobby area, this is an option for Japanese-inspired small plates, sushi, and cocktails.
Blue Star Lounge
A more casual choice for drinks and California-style bites, with an outdoor patio and fire pits.
Starbucks

And you'll probably spend half of it looking at the first photographs on your phones anyway.
Golf at JW Marriott Desert Springs
If you or your partner enjoy golf, this property becomes even more appealing for a proposal weekend.
Desert Springs Golf Club has two Ted Robinson-designed 18-hole championship courses:
The Palm Course
and
The Valley Course
Both are par-72 courses surrounded by Coachella Valley scenery.
The resort also offers practice facilities, putting greens, golf carts with GPS, rental equipment, instruction, and an 18-hole natural-turf putting course.
This opens up another proposal possibility:
Build golf into the weekend.
Play earlier in the day.
Relax afterward.
Then propose around sunset.
Spa Desert Springs
If your partner loves spa days, you have another built-in cover story.
Spa Desert Springs is a large 38,000-square-foot spa with 47 treatment rooms, a fitness center, spa bistro, couples and VIP suites, and an outdoor saltwater pool.
That makes it easy to turn proposal day into something your partner already believes is simply a relaxing resort getaway.
Spa.
Pool.
Boat ride.
Dinner.
Then suddenly...
A proposal.

A few days before the proposal, Daniella came down with a cold. Rather than forcing the moment, Chris made the decision to postpone the proposal until she felt better.
Looking back, it was the right call.
A proposal only happens once, and it's worth waiting until both people can fully enjoy it.
Several weeks later, we picked up exactly where we left off and began preparing for their new June proposal date.
Our Sunset Cliffs Proposal Plan

An Unexpected Challenge at Sunset Cliffs
As we always do, we arrived about an hour early.
Early arrival gives us time to scout the location, monitor lighting, and make adjustments before our clients arrive.
That habit ended up making all the difference.
The exact section of Sunset Cliffs where we'd originally planned for Chris to propose had recently been closed off with warning signs.
Months of heavy rain had caused noticeable cracks along the cliff edge, and portions of the area were considered unstable.
Instead of forcing the original plan, we immediately started looking for alternatives.
Fortunately, only a short walk away we found another overlook that offered nearly the same iconic Pacific Ocean backdrop while providing a much safer location.
We sent Chris an update before he arrived, explained the situation, and adjusted the GPS meeting point.
The proposal experience stayed exactly the same.
Only the location shifted a few yards.

After reviewing several locations throughout Joshua Tree National Park, we chose Keys View for its panoramic views of the Coachella Valley, San Andreas Fault, Salton Sea, and surrounding mountain ranges. Using a simple cover story and a carefully planned photography cue, Dvir got down on one knee as the desert sunset painted the sky with incredible color. Shay said yes, and we spent the next hour creating engagement portraits while chasing golden light across one of the most iconic viewpoints in Southern California.

After discussing several options throughout Joshua Tree National Park, we ultimately landed on Keys View.
It's one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Southern California and one of our favorite locations for destination proposals.
From the overlook, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Coachella Valley, the San Andreas Fault, the Salton Sea, and the surrounding mountain ranges stretching across the horizon.

Creating the Perfect Cover Story
Like many surprise proposals, the success of the plan depended on keeping everything natural.
Our cover story was simple.
Dvir told Shay that they were heading to Keys View to watch the sunset and enjoy the incredible views during their trip.
Meanwhile, Stephanie and I arrived early.
Because it was a busy holiday weekend, we wanted plenty of time to secure parking, scout the area, monitor the lighting conditions, and make sure everything was ready before they arrived.
When Dvir and Shay walked up to the overlook, the plan was for him to casually approach us and ask if we could take a photo of them together.
This is one of our favorite proposal strategies because it feels completely natural and never raises suspicion.
We happily agreed.
The Moment Shay Said Yes
We positioned them overlooking the valley below.
As photographers, we often guide couples into a few simple poses before the proposal to make everything feel authentic and comfortable.
We asked them to stand together.
Then we asked them to face one another.
Finally, we asked them to hold hands and look into each other's eyes.
That was Dvir's cue.
He began sharing his proposal speech, talking directly to Shay while Stephanie and I documented every reaction.
