The answer?

Absolutely.

After learning more about his vision, we helped finalize one of our favorite proposal locations in all of Southern California—the Japanese Friendship Garden inside Balboa Park.

Every time we photograph a proposal here, we're reminded why it's one of San Diego's most romantic places to ask one of life's biggest questions.

Plan Your San Diego Proposal

Why We Love the Japanese Friendship Garden

Located within the heart of Balboa Park, the Japanese Friendship Garden is one of San Diego's most peaceful and picturesque destinations.

Created to celebrate the friendship between San Diego and Yokohama, Japan, the garden blends traditional Japanese design with Southern California's natural beauty.

As you wander through the garden you'll discover:

  • Peaceful koi ponds

  • Flowing waterfalls

  • Stone pathways

  • Bamboo groves

  • Carefully manicured gardens

  • Quiet seating areas

  • And one of our favorite proposal locations...

The Earth Bridge.

Surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil water, the bridge creates an intimate setting that feels timeless, elegant, and incredibly romantic.

For couples looking for a proposal location that's peaceful without sacrificing beauty, the Japanese Friendship Garden continues to be one of our favorite recommendations.

Planning Every Step

Once Josh booked with us, we immediately began planning.

One thing we've learned after photographing countless surprise proposals is that preparation removes stress.

The more planning we do beforehand...

The easier proposal day becomes.

Together we finalized:

  • The proposal timeline

  • Meeting location

  • GPS directions

  • Where we'd be positioned

  • Where Josh and Tao would walk

  • The proposal cue

  • The photography plan afterward

Our goal is simple.

By the time proposal day arrives...

Everything should already be taken care of.

So all Josh had to do was show up and ask one of the biggest questions of his life.

A Peaceful Morning Inside Balboa Park

The morning of the proposal, Stephanie and I arrived early to scout the garden one last time.

Morning has become one of our favorite times to photograph inside the Japanese Friendship Garden.

The light is soft.

The temperatures are comfortable.

And the garden feels incredibly peaceful before the larger crowds arrive.

That morning was especially quiet.

In fact, it was almost as if we had the entire garden to ourselves.

Exactly what every surprise proposal hopes for.

Blending Into the Background

As Josh and Tao made their way through the garden, we did what we usually do.

We blended in like tourists.

Taking photos.

Walking the pathways.

Admiring the scenery.

Trying not to look suspicious.

When Josh reached the Earth Bridge and knew he was ready, he casually looked our direction and gave us a subtle thumbs up.

That was our cue.

We quietly got into position.

The next few moments would change both of their lives forever.

One Bridge. One Question. One "Yes."

Josh gently reached for Tao's hand.

Together they stepped onto the Earth Bridge.

With the morning sunlight filtering through the trees and the peaceful sounds of the garden surrounding them, everything seemed to slow down.

He looked into her eyes.

Dropped to one knee.

Shared everything he'd been waiting to say.

And asked the biggest question of his life.

She smiled.

She was completely surprised.

And without hesitation...

She said...

"Yes."

Those few seconds are why we love what we do.

They're real.

They're emotional.

And they're moments that can never be recreated.

Exploring the Garden Together

With the surprise complete, the rest of the morning belonged to them.

For the next hour we explored the Japanese Friendship Garden together, photographing their engagement throughout one of San Diego's most beautiful locations.

From the Earth Bridge and winding stone pathways to the waterfalls, koi ponds, and peaceful gardens, every corner offered another incredible backdrop.

One of the things we love most about photographing here is the variety.

You never have to leave the garden to create an entire engagement gallery that feels diverse, elegant, and timeless.

Every season looks a little different.

Every proposal tells a different story.

That's what keeps bringing us back.

Why the Japanese Friendship Garden Is One of San Diego's Best Proposal Locations

If you're looking for a proposal location that's intimate, elegant, and unlike anywhere else in Southern California, the Japanese Friendship Garden deserves to be at the top of your list.

The Earth Bridge has become one of our favorite places to photograph surprise proposals because it naturally creates a private, meaningful moment surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Combined with waterfalls, koi ponds, Japanese gardens, and the historic beauty of Balboa Park, it's easy to see why so many couples choose to begin their forever here.

Whether you're planning a quiet weekday morning proposal or an engagement session afterward, it's one of San Diego's most unforgettable proposal destinations.

Instead, it's something much bigger.

"Should we stay in San Diego or Orange County?"

It's a great question.

Although these two destinations are only about an hour apart, they offer completely different proposal experiences.

Best Places to Propose in Laguna Beach (2026 Guide) | Our Top 3 Surprise Proposal Locations

Searching for the best place to propose in Laguna Beach? After photographing countless surprise proposals throughout Orange County, we've narrowed it down to our three favorite locations: Victoria Beach (Mermaid Beach), Treasure Island Park below the iconic Montage Laguna Beach, and Crescent Bay Park. In this expert guide, we compare each location, share insider planning tips, discuss parking, tides, privacy, and sunset timing, and explain which proposal spot is best for different couples. Whether you're planning a destination proposal or a local engagement, this guide will help you choose the perfect location and show how our planning and concierge support makes proposing in Laguna Beach effortless from start to finish.

If you're planning a surprise proposal in Laguna Beach, one question usually comes before everything else:

Where should I propose?

After photographing surprise proposals throughout Laguna Beach for years, we've learned something important.

The "best" location isn't simply the one with the prettiest view.

It's the location that fits your vision, your relationship, and the experience you want to create together.

Some couples dream about a hidden beach with a historic pirate tower.

Others imagine a quiet bluff overlooking the Pacific.

Some want an elegant proposal with a luxury resort nearby.

Fortunately, Laguna Beach offers all three.

Below are our three favorite proposal locations that we consistently recommend to couples traveling from around the country—and around the world.

Don't Just Pick a Beautiful Location. Pick the Right One.
Every Laguna Beach proposal location has its own personality—from secluded beaches and dramatic cliffs to elegant oceanfront parks. The best choice depends on the experience you want to create. We'll help you choose the ideal location based on your vision, recommend the best time of day, prepare backup options, and coordinate every detail so you can enjoy the moment while we take care of the planning and photography.

Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal

1. Victoria Beach (Mermaid Beach)

Best For

  • Iconic scenery

  • Adventure lovers

  • Destination proposals

  • Sunset proposals

  • Couples wanting something unforgettable

If someone asked us to describe the most unique proposal location in Laguna Beach, Victoria Beach would probably be our answer.

Known for its famous pirate tower, dramatic cliffs, tide pools, and secluded shoreline, Victoria Beach feels like discovering a hidden destination rather than simply visiting another California beach.

The area surrounding the tower is often referred to as Mermaid Beach, although most visitors know it simply as Victoria Beach.

One thing we always discuss with couples before recommending this location is the tide.

Depending on the day, high tide can completely surround the pirate tower, making access difficult or unsafe. We monitor tide charts before every proposal and arrive early to verify conditions so our couples never have to guess.

Parking also deserves planning.

Street parking is limited, especially during summer and holiday weekends, and most visitors access the beach through the surrounding residential neighborhood before walking down the public staircase.

When everything comes together, however, Victoria Beach is simply magical.

Golden cliffs.

Historic architecture.

Ocean waves.

And some of the most beautiful sunsets in Southern California.

One of our favorite memories here was helping Danny travel from Colorado to propose to Bri over Fourth of July weekend. After carefully planning parking, tide timing, and the proposal itself, everything unfolded perfectly—and dolphins even appeared during their engagement session.

Read their full proposal story here:

From Colorado to Forever | Danny & Bri's Surprise Proposal at Victoria Beach

2. Treasure Island Park & Beach (Below Montage Laguna Beach)

Best For

  • Luxury proposals

  • Easy accessibility

  • Ocean bluff views

  • Sunset portraits

  • Couples wanting resort elegance

Treasure Island Park sits directly below the iconic Montage Laguna Beach and offers one of the most polished proposal experiences in Orange County.

Unlike some beaches that require longer walks or careful timing with the tides, Treasure Island provides beautifully landscaped walking paths, ocean overlooks, gardens, beach access, and incredible sunset lighting all within a short distance.

It gives couples flexibility.

You can propose overlooking the Pacific.

Walk down to the beach afterward.

Or celebrate with dinner at one of Laguna Beach's most well-known resorts.

It's especially ideal for couples traveling from out of town who want convenience without sacrificing beautiful scenery.

We've photographed several unforgettable proposals here, including a midday surprise proposal overlooking the coastline that proved beautiful light isn't limited to sunset.

Read that proposal story:

A Midday Montage Beach Surprise Proposal at Treasure Island Park

3. Crescent Bay Park & Beach

Best For

  • Privacy

  • Ocean bluff proposals

  • Floral arch setups

  • Easy logistics

  • Romantic sunsets

If we had to recommend one location that balances scenery, accessibility, and flexibility, Crescent Bay Park would be near the top of the list.

The bluff overlooks some of Laguna Beach's most beautiful coastline while providing enough open space for elaborate proposal setups, floral arches, candles, rose petals, musicians, or a simple intimate proposal.

Unlike Victoria Beach, you don't have to worry nearly as much about tides if you're proposing from the bluff.

It's also one of our favorite locations for clients wanting both panoramic ocean views and beach portraits afterward.

We've helped create everything from simple proposals to fully decorated floral experiences here.

One of our favorite stories was Arnold's Memorial Day weekend proposal after flying into Southern California to ask one life-changing question overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

We also recently helped Matt create an unforgettable floral arch proposal overlooking Crescent Bay that transformed the bluff into a private romantic setting.

Best Surprise Proposal Setups in Southern California (Luxury Ideas + Real Inspiration)

The best surprise proposals in Southern California don’t happen by accident—they’re designed. From luxury arch setups to curated picnic experiences and minimal, refined moments, the right setup transforms how your proposal feels and how it’s remembered. Across locations like La Jolla, Newport Beach, and Temecula, we’ve seen what works: clean focal points, intentional design, and seamless execution. Whether you want a fully styled environment or a simple rose petal trail leading into the moment, having the right setup removes stress and elevates the experience. This guide breaks down the best proposal setups and helps you choose the one that fits your vision, location, and budget.

Planning a surprise proposal in Southern California—whether in La Jolla, Newport Beach, or along the coast—comes down to one key detail most people overlook:

The setup.

It’s the difference between a moment that just happens
and one that feels intentional, elevated, and unforgettable.

After capturing hundreds of proposals across San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles, we’ve seen exactly what works—and what doesn’t.

Here are the best surprise proposal setups in Southern California, and how to choose the right one for your moment.

A Great Setup Gets Their Attention — A Great Plan Gets the “Yes”
Best Surprise Proposal Setups in Southern California (Luxury Ideas + Real Inspiration) shows how design, timing, and flow come together to create proposals that feel effortless and unforgettable. From minimal setups to full-service luxury experiences, we help you plan, style, and guide the moment so everything works exactly how it should.

Explore Proposal Experiences

1. Clean Luxury Arch Setup (Signature “Yes”)

If you want something elevated without going over the top, this is it.

Our Signature “Yes” setup was designed for clients who want a refined, photo-ready environment without the bulk of a full picnic or large production.

Why it works:

  • Creates a clear focal point for the proposal

  • Enhances photos with depth, structure, and balance

  • Feels intentional the moment your partner walks in

Best locations:

  • La Jolla cliffs and coastal parks

  • Newport Beach overlooks

  • Private garden or venue spaces

This is the go-to for clients who want a luxury look with effortless execution.

2. Boho Picnic Proposal Setup

This is one of the most popular styles—and for good reason.

A picnic setup creates a full experience, often including rugs, low tables, florals, and drinks.

Why it works:

  • Feels immersive and celebratory

  • Great for post-proposal moments (toast, relaxing, photos)

  • Adds a lifestyle element to your gallery

Best locations:

  • Sunset Cliffs (San Diego)

  • Beaches in Orange County

  • Temecula wineries

Best for clients who want more than just the proposal—they want the experience after the “yes.”

3. “Marry Me” Letter Display Setup

If you want bold and direct, this setup delivers.

“Marry Me” letters create an unmistakable statement and instantly define the moment.

Why it works:

  • High visual impact

  • No confusion—it’s clear what’s happening

  • Strong for wide-angle and drone shots

Best locations:

  • Private venues or estates

  • Open beach areas

  • Large outdoor spaces with room for setup

This is ideal for clients who want a big, cinematic proposal moment.

4. Minimal Proposal (No Decor)

Sometimes, less really is more.

A minimal proposal relies entirely on the location, timing, and emotion—no added setup.

Why it works:

  • Feels natural and spontaneous

  • Works beautifully in already scenic environments

  • No setup logistics

Best locations:

  • La Jolla Cove

  • Torrey Pines cliffs

  • Crystal Cove State Beach

Best for clients who want something simple, organic, and low-key.

5. Private Venue Proposal Setup

For clients looking for privacy and exclusivity, a private venue is the move.

Hotels, resorts, and wineries often offer designated proposal spaces.

Why it works:

  • Controlled environment

  • More privacy

  • Ability to customize decor and layout

Best locations:

  • La Jolla resorts and coastal hotels

  • Temecula wineries

  • Private estates in Orange County

This option works best when you want privacy combined with a curated experience.

Custom Proposal Setups Designed Around You

Not every proposal fits into a single category—and it shouldn’t.

Over the years, we’ve created everything from luxury picnic experiences to simple rose petal trails leading into the proposal spot, depending on what each client envisioned.

Some clients want a full setup.
Others just need a subtle touch to elevate the moment.

That’s where we come in.

We can help design something that fits:

  • Your vision

  • Your location

  • Your timeline

  • And your budget

Whether it’s a fully styled setup or something minimal and refined, our goal is the same—to make the moment feel intentional without adding unnecessary stress.

We’ve worked with proposals across San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, and beyond, and know how to adapt setups to different environments, lighting conditions, and timelines.

Which Proposal Setup Is Right for You?

It comes down to one question:

How do you want the moment to feel?

  • Clean and elevated → Signature “Yes” Setup

  • Experiential and relaxed → Picnic Setup

Why the Setup Matters More Than You Think

The setup impacts:

  • How your photos turn out afterward

Without a defined focal point, even the best locations can feel incomplete.

With the right setup, everything comes together seamlessly.

How to Pick the Right San Diego Proposal Spot

  • Vibe: Do you want ocean cliffs, a classic park, or a city skyline?

  • Privacy: Sunrise or weekday sunset is best.

  • Tides & Wind: Low tide = more sand and reflections. Beaches and cliffs can get breezy.

  • Access: Consider shoes, stairs, and ease of parking.

  • Backup Plan: Fog, high tides, or events can shift the plan—always have a second option nearby.

1) Sunset Cliffs (Ladera Street Overlook)

Address: Ladera St & Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107
Best time: Weekday sunset; check tide and wind.
Why it works: Dramatic cliffs + glowing skies = instant romance.
Photo tip: Stay a few feet from the edges for safe, wide-angle shots.

2) Balboa Park (Lily Pond & Botanical Building)

Address: 1549 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101
Best time: Early morning for fewer crowds.
Why it works: Historic architecture + reflective lily pond.
Photo tip: Use shaded archways for soft, flattering light.

3) Scripps Pier / La Jolla Shores

Address: Kellogg Park, 8277 Camino Del Oro, La Jolla, CA 92037
Best time: Sunset at low tide.
Why it works: Iconic pier columns + mirror-like sand.

4) Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Address: 12600 N Torrey Pines Rd, La Jolla, CA 92037
Best time: Golden hour; weekdays for easy parking.
Why it works: Sweeping coastline views without a long hike.
Photo tip: Earth-tone outfits complement the natural scenery.

5) Windansea Beach (Historic Surf Shack)

Address: 6800 Neptune Pl, La Jolla, CA 92037
Best time: Sunset on weekdays.
Why it works: Rustic surf shack and sculpted rocks.

Address: 1100 Coast Blvd, La Jolla, CA 92037
Best time: Early morning or weekday sunset.

What to Wear for a San Diego Proposal

  • Beach/cliffs: Neutral or earth tones; flowy fabrics look stunning.

  • City/park: Smart-casual; coordinate colors without matching.

  • Shoes: Choose traction for sand or rocks; bring backup sandals/heels.

  • Ring tip: Use a slim pouch to avoid a bulky box outline.

Pro Photo Tips (Or Let Us Handle It)

  • Timing is everything: We plan around tides, sun angles, and crowds.

  • Framing: Clean horizons, 45° cliff angles, and space to move.

  • Natural over stiff: Walking, spinning, forehead-to-forehead moments feel real.

  • Weather: Fog and clouds can look cinematic—we make it intentional.
