One reason we love photographing engagement sessions there is how quickly we can change the look of a gallery.

There, we can work with:

This is where we'd be careful.
Neither location guarantees privacy.
Both are public places.

For privacy, we'd think more about:
Weekday vs. weekend
Time of day
Exact proposal spot

How far you're willing to walk

Both.
If your schedule allows it, we'd strongly consider Monday through Thursday.
A weekday generally gives us a better chance of dealing with fewer people than a beautiful Saturday evening.
It can also make parking and discreet photographer positioning easier.
If you're traveling into San Diego specifically for your proposal, having flexibility with the date can be incredibly valuable.
Windansea Has One Major Variable: The Tide
This is probably the biggest logistical difference between these locations.
If you're considering Windansea, check the tide.
And don't check it once three weeks before the proposal and forget about it.
Check while planning.
Then check again as the date approaches.
Higher water and surf can change how much shoreline is comfortably accessible.
The rocks can look different.
Your favorite spot from somebody else's photographs might not look exactly the same when you arrive.
That's the nature of proposing beside the ocean.
At the Gliderport, we're still paying attention to weather and coastal conditions, but we're not planning the actual proposal around usable beach area.
That makes the Gliderport somewhat more predictable from that standpoint.

Both give us good options.
At Windansea, photographers aren't unusual.
People photograph sunsets.
Surfers.
Friends.
The coastline.
We can blend in surprisingly well.
At the Gliderport, the same thing happens.
People bring cameras for the views and paragliders all the time.
Sometimes the best hiding place isn't behind a tree.
It's in plain sight.

Another tie.
Windansea:
"Let's watch sunset at the beach."

Gliderport:
"Let's go see the cliffs and watch the paragliders."
Also done.
Neither requires some elaborate fictional story.
In fact, the simpler the cover story, the better.
The best cover story is usually something you'd realistically do together anyway.
What About a Proposal Cue?
We often build a discreet cue into the plan.
At the Gliderport, we've used a thumbs-up behind the back to tell us the client was ready. One of our real proposals with Ryan and Brittney used exactly that strategy. (Last Minute Photoshoot)
We've also used similar cues at Windansea.
But Stone taught us another lesson.
He forgot his thumbs-up.
Completely.
And that's okay.
Because we were already watching him.

Which Is Better for a Proposal Walkthrough?
Both.
If you're able to meet us before proposal time, we love doing walkthroughs.
Stone had about 30–40 minutes away from Samantha on proposal day.
We used that window to meet him at Windansea.
We walked the beach.
Checked the rocks.
Looked at the Surf Shack.
Mapped the proposal location.
Planned our positioning.

For destination couples especially, that can remove a huge amount of uncertainty.
GPS pins are helpful.
Actually standing where you're going to propose is better.
Which Is Better for a Signature Yes Floral Setup?
We'd generally start the conversation with:
La Jolla Gliderport.

The open landscape can create a beautiful contrast between a romantic floral setup and the dramatic cliffs behind it.
Windansea, meanwhile, is naturally beautiful without much added décor.
For many Windansea proposals, we'd lean into the environment:
Ocean.
Rocks.
Sunset.
Flowers afterward.
Simple.
Before planning any arch, large sign, furniture, picnic, candles, or other setup at either public location, however, we'd verify the current rules for the exact activity and area.
Which Is Easier for Parking?
Neither is a location where we'd recommend arriving at the last second.
At Windansea, parking close to the beach is limited, so neighboring streets can become part of the plan.
At the Gliderport, the parking situation feels completely different, but you may still have a walk between your car and the exact proposal location.
And if we're bringing décor?
That walk feels considerably longer.
Our rule for both:
Build parking into the timeline.
If you're supposed to propose at 6:30 PM, don't plan to arrive at 6:25.
Which Is Better for Accessibility?
This depends on the exact spot.
Windansea involves beach access, sand, rocks, and potentially uneven or slippery surfaces.
The Gliderport involves dirt areas, trails, uneven terrain, and proximity to cliffs.
Neither should automatically be treated like a flat paved park.
If your partner—or anyone joining afterward—has mobility considerations, tell us early.
That can completely change which location we'd recommend.
Which Is Better for Families?
We'd probably give the Gliderport a slight advantage, depending on where exactly you're planning to propose.
There's generally more open space to work with than on sections of Windansea's shoreline.
That can make hiding or positioning family easier.
But we've learned something important after planning a lot of proposals:
Family members need instructions too.
Where should they stand?
When should they arrive?
When can they come out?
And please...
Don't all stare directly at the couple while holding your phones.
Nothing says "something is about to happen" quite like six relatives pretending not to watch you.
What About the Marine Layer?
Welcome to La Jolla.
You can plan for sunset.
You cannot order one.
Some evenings explode with warm color.
Others turn soft and cloudy.
We've photographed proposals in both.
Marine layer doesn't automatically mean bad photographs.
Cloud cover can create beautiful soft light and eliminate some of the harsh contrast we'd otherwise have to work around.
We'd rather have a meaningful proposal under cloudy skies than postpone your entire experience chasing a weather app's idea of a perfect sunset.

They were traveling from Arizona, he wanted us to capture the proposal itself, and he needed some help figuring out how to actually pull off the surprise.

We had about a month.
So we got to work.
What started as a plan for the cliffs of La Jolla eventually became something much more personal—a sunset proposal at Windansea Beach surrounded by waves, rocks, and the green-covered coastline Samantha already loved.

Planning a Destination Proposal From Arizona
Planning a proposal from another state can feel overwhelming.
You can look through photographs.

But it's difficult to understand how a location actually feels until you're standing there.
Stone and Samantha were coming from Arizona, so part of our job was helping Stone narrow down San Diego's coastline without requiring him to figure everything out himself.
We sent him several options, including:

Each location gave him something different.
The Gliderport offered dramatic cliffs, open Pacific Ocean views, and paragliders.

After looking through our galleries and comparing the different locations, Stone chose:

At least, we thought the location was settled.
Once We Had the Location, We Started Building the Plan
Choosing a proposal location is only the beginning.
Once Stone decided on the Gliderport, we started working through the details.
We sent over our proposal planning information, including a quick checklist, helpful FYI information for proposal day, and a tentative timeline for how everything would happen.
We still had plenty of time before August 10, so there was no need to rush.
We could dial everything in.
Where Stone and Samantha would arrive.
Where we'd be positioned.
How we'd remain discreet.
What his cue would be.
When the proposal should happen.
And what we'd do immediately afterward.
Then, a few weeks before proposal day, Stone reached out with a question.
Were we familiar with Windansea Beach?

But Windansea had something none of them did.

The rocky coastline creates a lot of variety for photographs, especially when the tide and surf cooperate.
For Stone, it gave him the beach proposal Samantha wanted while still offering the dramatic coastal scenery he originally liked about the Gliderport.
Proposal Day: Meeting Stone Before Samantha Arrived
Whenever possible, we recommend doing an in-person walkthrough before a surprise proposal.
Even if we've already sent:

There's something different about physically standing in the location together.

Where would we position ourselves?
How could we follow them without making Samantha suspicious?
What would happen immediately afterward?

But when you only get one chance to capture someone's genuine reaction, tiny details matter.

A walkthrough gives you a chance to physically see:

You don't want to arrive at proposal time and suddenly realize you don't remember which rock you're supposed to stand beside.

After the proposal, we spent roughly the next hour exploring Windansea with them.

Why Windansea Worked Better Than the Original Plan
Would the La Jolla Gliderport have been beautiful?
Absolutely.
We love photographing proposals there.
But looking back, Windansea was the better choice for Stone and Samantha.
That's an important distinction.
It wasn't better because Windansea is objectively better than the Gliderport.
It was better because Samantha had already talked about loving the beach.
The green-covered rocks caught her attention.
The location meant something to her before she had any idea she'd eventually become engaged there.

When Makaila first reached out to us in mid-May, he already knew one thing.
He didn't want to propose on the beach.
While San Diego is famous for its coastline, not every couple pictures themselves getting engaged with waves crashing behind them. Some want timeless architecture, lush gardens, historic charm, and a little more privacy.
Balboa Park immediately became the perfect fit.
After a few conversations, we landed on a proposal at the Pavilion inside Balboa Park, followed by an engagement session around Alcazar Garden before finishing the evening with portraits at the Marriott in Downtown San Diego, where they were staying for the weekend.
It would become one of our favorite proposal stories of the season.
Planning the Perfect Balboa Park Surprise Proposal
One thing we always tell our couples is that the best surprise proposals feel natural.
The less forced the moment feels, the more genuine the emotions become.
For Makaila's proposal, we built a simple plan.
Steph and I would already be walking around Balboa Park like any other visitors.
As Makaila and Sam approached, we'd casually ask,
"Hey, would you mind taking a photo of us?"
After thanking them, we'd naturally offer to return the favor.
While posing them together, we'd quietly guide them into position.
Once everything looked perfect, we'd give Makaila the cue.
From there...
The moment belonged entirely to them.
The Moment Sam Realized What Was Happening
Everything unfolded exactly as planned.
When we first walked up, Sam immediately smiled and laughed.
"You picked the right person," she said.
"He's a photographer!"
We all laughed while doing everything we could to keep the surprise alive.
Makaila played it perfectly.
After taking our "photo," we handed the camera back and offered to take one of them together.
As they stood in front of the Pavilion surrounded by the beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture that makes Balboa Park one of San Diego's most iconic proposal locations, Makaila slowly stepped back.
Then he dropped to one knee.
The look on Sam's face said everything.
Pure surprise.

One of our favorite moments happened just seconds later.
Still processing everything, Sam turned toward us with the biggest smile and asked,

As we always do, we arrived about an hour early.
Early arrival gives us time to scout the location, monitor lighting, and make adjustments before our clients arrive.
That habit ended up making all the difference.
The exact section of Sunset Cliffs where we'd originally planned for Chris to propose had recently been closed off with warning signs.
Months of heavy rain had caused noticeable cracks along the cliff edge, and portions of the area were considered unstable.
Instead of forcing the original plan, we immediately started looking for alternatives.
Fortunately, only a short walk away we found another overlook that offered nearly the same iconic Pacific Ocean backdrop while providing a much safer location.
We sent Chris an update before he arrived, explained the situation, and adjusted the GPS meeting point.
The proposal experience stayed exactly the same.
Only the location shifted a few yards.

Mother's Day Weekend Surprise Proposal at La Jolla Cove | JR & Michelle's Engagement Story
When JR reached out in late April, he was planning a surprise proposal for Michelle during a Mother's Day weekend trip from Las Vegas to San Diego. The plan seemed simple: a walk through Scripps Park, a few casual photos, and a proposal overlooking La Jolla Cove. Like many surprise proposals, things didn't go exactly as planned. Holiday traffic, packed parking lots, and last-minute adjustments added a few unexpected twists to the day. But sometimes those moments become part of the story. With family nearby, ocean views stretching across the coastline, and the iconic backdrop of La Jolla Seal Rock, JR got down on one knee and asked Michelle to marry him, creating an unforgettable destination proposal in San Diego.

One of the things we've learned after photographing hundreds of surprise proposals is that no proposal ever unfolds exactly the way you imagine it will.
And honestly?
That's usually what makes it memorable.
In late April, we received a message from JR asking if we were available to photograph his proposal to Michelle on May 9th in La Jolla.
We were already booked for a sunset proposal later that day, leaving only a morning or afternoon opening available.
After going back and forth on timing, we ultimately landed on a morning proposal.
Not only did it work better with JR's schedule, but anyone familiar with La Jolla Cove knows the lighting is often much more favorable in the morning. The crowds are lighter, the marine layer typically creates softer light, and the coastline has a calmness that's difficult to find later in the day.
Within the week, everything was booked and we began planning.
The proposal itself seemed simple enough.
JR and Michelle would be driving in from Las Vegas for Mother's Day weekend. JR had family in San Diego and told Michelle they were spending the day visiting relatives before exploring La Jolla Cove, Scripps Park, and the surrounding coastline.
The plan was straightforward.

Traffic.
Parking.
More traffic.
And somehow even less parking.
What should have been a relatively easy arrival quickly became a race against the clock.
Traffic entering La Jolla was significantly heavier than anticipated, pushing our target proposal time from 9:30 AM to nearly 10:00 AM.
Once we finally parked, Stephanie and I practically sprinted through La Jolla Cove to get into position.
Thankfully, JR's sister was helping coordinate behind the scenes and kept us updated throughout the morning.
Michelle's daughters were also there, helping keep things relaxed while everyone waited for us to get set up.
When JR and Michelle finally arrived, we spotted them taking photos near Scripps Park overlooking the ocean.
This was our cue.
We approached and offered to take a photo for them.
Michelle smiled politely and declined.
"Thank you though."
For a split second, Stephanie and I looked at each other.
This wasn't exactly how the script was supposed to go.
Fortunately, JR stepped in immediately.
"Let's have them take a few photos."
Crisis averted.
Honestly, he saved the day.

Once we started taking photos, everything settled into place.
The nerves disappeared.

The ocean sparkled behind them.
The sea lions could be heard in the distance near La Jolla Cove.
Tourists walked the coastline completely unaware that one of the biggest moments of someone's life was about to happen.
After a few photos, we guided JR and Michelle into position overlooking the water near La Jolla Seal Rock.

JR got down on one knee.
Michelle immediately realized what was happening.
And she said yes.

On the late afternoon of May 19th, we received an inquiry from Ashley. Her son, Ami, a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, had decided he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Nahomy, during her upcoming visit from Texas. The proposal was only four days away, scheduled for May 23rd in San Diego.
With such a short timeline, there wasn't much room for overthinking.
Stephanie and I immediately jumped on a call with Ashley to start planning.
We shared examples from previous surprise proposals, discussed different lighting options throughout the day, reviewed several proposal locations throughout San Diego, and began building a game plan that would fit Ami and Nahomy's story.
After discussing several possibilities, we all agreed on one location that never disappoints: La Jolla Gliderport.
Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, the Gliderport offers sweeping coastal views, dramatic cliffs, and some of the most beautiful sunsets in Southern California. It felt like the perfect backdrop for a proposal.
For Ashley, planning everything from hundreds of miles away wasn't easy.
She was trusting two photographers she had never met, in a city she wasn't familiar with, to help pull off one of the most important moments in her son's life.
That trust is something we never take lightly.
Whether a proposal is planned a year in advance or only a few days before, every client who reaches out is placing an incredible amount of faith in us, and we feel a responsibility to deliver.
As the planning continued, Stephanie and I wanted to make this proposal even more meaningful.
The day before the proposal, we drove to La Jolla Gliderport to scout the location.
We walked the cliffs, studied the lighting, watched how the crowds moved through the area, and searched for the perfect place to create something special.
That's when we found it.
Tucked along the coastline was an ideal spot for our Signature Yes setup, complete with our arch, florals, candles, and rose petals overlooking the Pacific.
The idea felt right immediately.
As a small gesture of appreciation for the men and women who serve our country, we wanted to gift the setup to Ami and Nahomy.
The Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis — "Always Faithful" — represents loyalty, commitment, and devotion. As we thought about Ami preparing to ask Nahomy to spend the rest of his life with him, the meaning couldn't have felt more fitting.
We shared the idea with Ashley.
She loved it.
The plan was set.
The morning of the proposal, we were already in San Diego photographing another surprise proposal. Once that session wrapped up, we headed straight to La Jolla to secure the location and begin setting up.
As the afternoon turned into evening, the Pacific Ocean glowed beneath the cliffs while we added the final touches to the setup.
Then we saw them.
Ami and Nahomy slowly made their way toward the overlook.
Before a single word was spoken, Nahomy immediately noticed the setup.

As she approached the arch overlooking the ocean, surrounded by flowers, candles, and the sound of waves crashing below, Ami got down on one knee and asked the question he had traveled, planned, and prepared for.

Somewhere between the long drives, hidden ring boxes, late-night edits, lack of sleep, beach parking chaos, carrying arches through crowded parks, and hearing strangers clap after the “yes,” we realized how much life can change in a year when you keep showing up consistently.

Friday — Joshua Tree at Sunset
The weekend started in the desert.
Driving into Joshua Tree felt surreal. The roads slowly opened up into massive rock formations and warm desert light. The closer we got to golden hour, the more the landscape started glowing orange.
Before every proposal, we arrive early — usually hours early. We test lighting, scout angles, communicate with the client, and mentally walk through the timeline before anything happens.
Standing out there in the desert testing camera settings while the wind picked up slightly, it hit us again how wild this job really is. Someone trusted us to capture one of the biggest moments of their life in the middle of the desert.
That never gets old.
By the time the proposal happened, the entire sky had softened into warm gold tones. Quiet. Calm. Just the sound of wind moving through the desert and two people stepping into a completely new chapter of their lives.
Saturday Morning — La Jolla Cove
A few hours of sleep later, alarms started going off before sunrise.
Coffee in hand, camera batteries charging in the car, memory cards cleared from the night before, we drove into La Jolla for a morning proposal at the cove.
The energy shift from Joshua Tree to La Jolla was massive.
The sound of waves crashing against the cliffs. Sea lions barking in the distance. Tourists walking the coastline early in the morning. Marine layer hanging over the ocean.

After the proposal, we spent part of the afternoon meeting another client visiting from Oakland for a proposal walkthrough. We walked the location together, talked through nerves, cover stories, proposal positioning, lighting, timing, backup plans, and every small detail leading up to the moment.
That preparation matters more than people realize.
Saturday Sunset — Gliderport in La Jolla
By sunset, we were carrying pieces of our Signature Yes setup through Gliderport while paragliders floated overhead.
Camera bags. Floral pieces. Candles. Tripods. Sandbags.
At times our car looked more like a mobile production van than a normal vehicle.
Holiday weekends add another layer of complexity to proposal photography. Parking becomes difficult. Beaches become crowded. Wind becomes unpredictable. Timelines tighten.
At one point we were holding florals down with one hand while checking lighting conditions with the other.
But when the proposal actually started, everything slowed down.
The crowds disappeared.
The stress disappeared.
The setup disappeared.
It became about the couple and the moment.
That’s always the goal.
Sunday Morning — The Huntington Library Proposal
Sunday morning came fast.
More coffee. More charging batteries. More loading gear into the car before sunrise.
This proposal at the The Huntington Library was especially memorable because we were operating completely undercover.
Under the guise of a family photoshoot with 3 kids… until it wasn’t.
We arrived early to scout the gardens and eventually found the perfect location inside the rose garden to quietly set up the proposal plan. One of the biggest parts of our job is blending in naturally without drawing attention.
Sometimes that means acting like tourists.
Sometimes it means pretending to photograph landscapes.
Sometimes it means blending into family sessions until the exact moment arrives.
The Huntington Library felt peaceful compared to the pace of the rest of the weekend. Sunlight filtered softly through the gardens, families walked quietly through the pathways, and for a few moments everything slowed down.
Then suddenly the proposal happened.
Shock.
Tears.
Smiles.
Excitement.
And just like that, another unforgettable memory was captured forever.
Memorial Day — Laguna Beach
By Memorial Day itself, exhaustion was definitely starting to hit.
But the second we arrived in Laguna Beach, adrenaline kicked back in.
This proposal involved our Signature Yes arch setup overlooking the ocean at Crescent Bay Park before moving down to the beach afterward for engagement photos at sunset.
Parking? Absolute chaos.
Holiday weekends in Laguna can test your patience quickly. Cars circling nonstop. Packed streets. Crowded overlooks. Tourists everywhere.
We had to drive around multiple times before eventually finding parking.
That’s one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned:
don’t panic when things aren’t immediately going your way.
Take a breath.
Stay patient.
Trust your preparation.
Eventually things usually fall into place.
As sunset approached, the stress melted away almost instantly. The sky turned soft orange and blue, waves crashed below the cliffs, and after the proposal we walked barefoot onto the beach capturing engagement photos as the last bit of sunlight disappeared behind the horizon.
And somehow after all the driving, setup, editing, timelines, parking, stress, and lack of sleep…
We’d do it all over again tomorrow.
What We’ve Learned About Navigating Busy Holiday Proposal Weekends
After photographing 5 proposals over 4 days, here are a few things we’ve learned that help us stay calm and prepared during high-pressure weekends:
Plan Every Detail Ahead of Time
We create timelines for every client and communicate constantly leading up to the proposal day.

In this line of work, preparation is everything.
Arrive Earlier Than You Think You Need To
If a proposal starts at 7 PM, we’ll often arrive around 5 PM.
That gives us time to:

setup decor
test lighting
communicate with the client
mentally reset before the proposal starts
Rushing creates stress.
Preparation creates confidence.
Parking Requires Patience
Seriously.
Especially during holiday weekends.
Some of our biggest stress points this weekend had nothing to do with photography — it was parking.
But panic never helps.
Breathe.
Stay calm.
Keep circling if needed.
Eventually something opens up.
Visualize The Day Before It Happens
One thing that helps us tremendously is mentally visualizing the proposal before arriving.
Where will the client walk from?
Where will we stand?
How will lighting look?
What happens if crowds are heavy?
What’s the backup plan?
Visualization helps remove anxiety because your brain has already “seen” the scenario before it happens.
Respect The Location
A lot of proposal setups happen in public spaces surrounded by homes, beaches, cliffs, and parks.
We always:
clean up completely
bring trash bags
use a hand rake for beach setups
protect the environment
leave locations cleaner than we found them
Respect matters.
Don’t Transfer Stress To Your Clients
Even if parking is difficult…
Even if setup is delayed…
Even if the beach is crowded…

During our first conversation, Jeremy shared his vision: a sunset proposal overlooking the ocean at Sunset Cliffs, one of the most iconic and romantic proposal locations in Southern California.
