Flying Into Forever | Arnold's Memorial Day Surprise Proposal at Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach
Arnold originally contacted us to photograph a surprise proposal in Palm Springs, but after weeks of planning, we secretly moved the date to Memorial Day and relocated the experience to Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach to keep the proposal a complete surprise. With our Signature Yes proposal arch overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Arnold got down on one knee as family members watched from nearby before celebrating with a golden-hour engagement session on Crescent Bay Beach. Behind every proposal we photograph are hours of planning, timeline creation, location scouting, lighting research, restaurant recommendations, and contingency planning. This Laguna Beach proposal story offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to create a seamless Southern California surprise proposal experience.
There are proposal photos that capture a moment.
Then there are proposal photos that tell a story.
The image of Arnold and his fiancée standing on the beach in Laguna Beach with their arms stretched wide, pretending to fly together, perfectly represents what their day felt like. It wasn't just about getting engaged—it was about stepping into a completely new chapter together.
For us at Last Minute Photoshoot, that's exactly what surprise proposal photography is supposed to preserve.
From the quiet anticipation before the proposal to the laughter that follows the "yes," every chapter deserves to be remembered. Laguna Beach offers some of Southern California's most breathtaking proposal locations, and we'll help you make the most of them with personalized planning, local expertise, discreet photography, and guidance every step of the way—so you can stay present while we capture the memories.
Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal
A Surprise Proposal That Started in Palm Springs
In the middle of May, Arnold reached out to us looking for a photographer to capture a surprise proposal near the end of the month in Palm Springs.
After several phone calls and planning sessions, we came up with a different idea.
To help keep the proposal a complete surprise, we actually moved the proposal date forward to Memorial Day, May 25, throwing his girlfriend completely off the trail.
Sometimes the best proposal planning isn't just choosing the perfect location.
It's creating enough uncertainty that your partner never suspects what's about to happen.
Choosing Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach
After discussing several Southern California proposal locations, we ultimately chose Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach.
Why?
Because Crescent Bay Park offers nearly everything couples look for when planning a proposal:
Incredible Pacific Ocean views
Elevated coastal bluffs
Beautiful golden-hour light
Easy transition to the beach afterward
One of the most romantic proposal locations in Orange County
Arnold also wanted something more elevated than a traditional proposal.
So together we planned our Signature Yes Proposal Experience, complete with our decorative arch, candles, florals, and styling to create a beautiful setting overlooking the ocean.
When everything came together, the location felt intimate, elegant, and timeless.
Memorial Day Weekend... What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
Holiday weekends and coastal California.
Most photographers immediately think:
Traffic.
Crowds.
Parking.
Chaos.
And honestly...
They'd be right.
We arrived early—as we always do—but still spent nearly an hour searching for parking.
Once we finally found a space, our vehicle ended up nearly half a mile away from the proposal site.
That meant multiple trips carrying the arch, flowers, décor, equipment, cameras, and everything else needed to create the experience Arnold envisioned.
Would we do it again?
Without hesitation.
Because while most people only see the final photographs...
We get to experience everything that happens before that first shutter click.
The Moment Everything Came Together
Once everything was set up, all that was left was to wait.
Arnold arrived exactly as planned.
Nearby, family members quietly hid out of sight, waiting for the big moment.
The couple walked directly toward the arch.
We began photographing.
Arnold got down on one knee.
She said yes.
Almost instantly, cheers erupted from family members nearby.
The surprise had worked perfectly.
Moments like these remind us why we love photographing surprise proposals throughout Laguna Beach and Southern California.
No two stories are ever the same.
But every genuine reaction feels unforgettable.
Golden Hour on Crescent Bay Beach
After celebrating at the proposal site, we walked down to Crescent Bay Beach for a short engagement session.
As the sun slowly disappeared behind the Pacific, we captured relaxed portraits together along the shoreline.
One of our favorite images happened completely naturally.
The two of them stretched their arms out like airplanes, laughing as they "flew" together across the sand.
It's playful.
It's authentic.
And somehow it perfectly symbolizes what engagement feels like.
Not just saying yes.
But flying into whatever comes next—together.
What Most Couples Never See
One of our favorite parts of our job actually happens long before the proposal.
Long before the cameras come out.
Long before anyone gets down on one knee.
Behind every successful surprise proposal are countless hours of preparation.
That often includes:
Building a personalized proposal timeline
Recommending the best proposal locations
Monitoring sunset timing and lighting
Helping choose the exact proposal position
Planning backup options
Researching nearby restaurants and celebration ideas
Walking clients through speeches, outfits, rings, and logistics
Coordinating with family members when they're involved
Preparing for weather, crowds, traffic, and holiday weekends
Photography is only one part of what we do.
Helping create an experience couples will remember forever is what truly drives us.
“Incredible Duo! Stephanie and Son made it a super smooth process and it went flawlessly!”

How to Plan a Proposal While Traveling (Without Losing Your Mind)
Planning a proposal while traveling comes with unique challenges—tight schedules, unfamiliar locations, and the pressure of keeping it all a surprise. Half of our proposals this year have been from out-of-state clients flying into Southern California, whether on a quick work trip or a 24-hour getaway. We’ve helped clients from Georgia, Arizona, and beyond navigate everything from packed itineraries to no cell service in the mountains, and each time the key has been preparation and communication. In this guide, we break down exactly how to plan a seamless surprise proposal while traveling: choosing the right location, simplifying logistics, building a believable cover story, and working with local photographers who know the area inside and out. By keeping things simple and stress-free, you’ll have the clarity to get down on one knee and pour your heart out. With our experience capturing countless travel proposals, you can trust us to make your quick trip the start of a lifetime memory.
Traveling adds an unforgettable layer of excitement to a proposal—but it also brings its own set of challenges. Between tight timelines, unfamiliar locations, and balancing “vacation mode,” keeping everything smooth (and secret) can feel overwhelming. Half of our proposal clients this year have been from out of state—either blending a work trip into a surprise proposal or planning a quick 24-hour getaway to Southern California. We’ve seen the stress, the nerves, and the rush first-hand, and we’ve also seen the magic that happens when it all comes together.
If you’re wondering how to pull off a proposal while traveling, here’s the roadmap we’ve used to help countless clients turn short trips into lifetime memories.
Destination proposals can feel overwhelming—navigating flights, hotels, and logistics while trying to keep the moment a surprise. Our Engagement & Proposal Packages are built for travelers who want stress-free planning, location guidance, and professional photography—so you can focus on the “YES” and leave the rest to us.

Section 1: Start With the End in Mind
Where do you want the moment to happen? Beach, winery, rooftop, desert, mountain?
How much time will you realistically have—an entire weekend or just one free afternoon?
What do you want the proposal story to feel like—spontaneous, adventurous, elegant?
📍 Example: One of our clients flew in from Georgia on a work trip. With meetings filling most of his schedule, he only had a short window of time to make the proposal happen. We crafted a plan that fit seamlessly into his work obligations, selected a nearby location, and built a timeline down to the minute. Even though he had just a few hours to spare, the proposal felt relaxed, meaningful, and perfectly timed.
Section 2: Simplify Logistics
Travel throws curveballs—delayed flights, rental cars, or traffic. Keep it simple:
Pick a location close to your hotel or conference center.
Factor in drive time + parking (California beaches and wineries are notorious for this).
Always have a backup plan if weather or crowds get in the way.
📍 Example: A client from Arizona planned a special trip to San Diego to propose. With only a short window during their stay, they wanted everything to feel effortless. We helped them narrow down a location that was both iconic and easy to access, mapped out the timing around sunset, and provided GPS pins to avoid confusion. By simplifying the logistics and planning ahead, the proposal unfolded smoothly without any stress or rushing.
Section 3: Communication Is Everything
Work with a local photographer (hi 👋) who knows the area.
Overcommunicate—share your exact schedule, travel delays, and even outfit choices.
Don’t hold back details; it helps us adjust if timelines shift (and they usually do).
📍 Example: We had a client book us the night before and ask for help planning a mountain proposal in less than 12 hours. After finalizing the details, we headed to the location the next day—only to realize we had no cell service. Huge “oh shit” moment. Thankfully, because of the preparation the night before and early that morning, we had already created a clear timeline, shared the location, and mapped out the sequence. Even without service, the couple arrived, and everything went smoothly. Without that communication and prep, it would have been chaos not knowing where the other was. As Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
We’ve also had proposals where someone wore the wrong shoes or timelines got pushed back by an hour. Because we had full context, we adapted seamlessly without blowing the surprise.
Section 4: Keep It Natural
When you’re traveling, it’s easy to act “off” and tip your partner off. That’s why we help you create a full cover story and timeline so nothing feels out of place.
We’ve also seen clients try to pack their day with a full itinerary—go here, go there, see everything. Honestly, with a proposal looming over your head, we suggest keeping it simple. Less is more. A streamlined plan makes everything smoother, more stress free, and gives you the clarity you need to get on one knee and pour your heart out.
Keep it natural by:
Planning your cover story early (“Let’s go for a walk at the beach before dinner”).
Letting your partner choose their outfit, then gently guiding them into photo-ready territory.
Using the trip itself as camouflage—vacations are the perfect excuse for nicer clothes, photos, and special outings.
Section 5: Our Role as Traveling Proposal Photographers
We know what it’s like to land in a new place with just hours to pull everything off. Our job isn’t just to take photos—it’s to help you navigate logistics, stay calm, and guide you into the perfect light without drawing suspicion. Whether you’re blending a work trip into a proposal or flying in for a whirlwind 24-hour getaway, we make sure you can focus on the moment instead of the stress.
We also wear many hats. Over the years, I’ve been more than just a photographer—I’ve been a brother, a sounding board, and a friend to many of my clients. It often feels like we’ve known each other for years by the time the proposal happens. There’s a deep bond that comes from entrusting us with such an intimate, life-changing moment. Sometimes I’ll be communicating with a client back and forth for hours, offering advice, calming nerves, or just lending an ear. That level of trust is something we don’t take lightly—and it’s why the proposals we capture feel so genuine.
