A Desert Oasis "Yes" | Greg & Priscilla's Surprise Proposal at Moorten Botanical Garden in Palm Springs
Planning a surprise proposal in Palm Springs? Follow Greg and Priscilla's real proposal story at Moorten Botanical Garden, where a family photo session became an unforgettable engagement surrounded by towering cacti and desert landscapes. Learn how thoughtful planning, personalized timelines, location scouting, cover stories, and local expertise helped create a seamless proposal experience. This guide also shares practical tips for proposing at Moorten Botanical Garden, including the best time to visit, parking information, and why pairing your proposal with an engagement session at Andreas Canyon creates one of the most beautiful desert experiences in Southern California.
Sometimes the best proposal plans don't begin with a grand gesture.
Sometimes they begin with something as simple as...
"Let's take some family photos."
When Greg reached out to us on May 15, he already knew two things.
He wanted to propose to Priscilla.
And he wanted their son to be part of one of the biggest moments in their family's story.
They would be visiting Palm Springs from out of town and hoped to propose on May 30 at Moorten Botanical Garden.
With just over two weeks before proposal day, we had plenty of time to build something meaningful.
The challenge wasn't finding a beautiful location.
It was finding the perfect way to include the person who mattered most to both of them.
Their son.
Moorten Botanical Garden offers a one-of-a-kind backdrop where towering cacti, desert blooms, and peaceful pathways create an intimate setting unlike anywhere else in Southern California. If you're looking for a proposal that's elegant, unique, and far from ordinary, we'll help bring your vision to life. From finding the perfect location and building a seamless timeline to capturing every genuine reaction, we'll make sure your Palm Springs proposal is every bit as unforgettable as the person you're asking. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Choose Your Proposal Experience
Planning a Family Surprise Proposal
One of our favorite parts about proposal planning is brainstorming ideas that feel personal.
During our conversations with Greg, we explored several possibilities.
A custom shirt that read:
"Mommy, Will You Marry Daddy?"
A surprise ring bearer moment.
A hidden sign.
Even having their son help present the ring.
Every idea felt special.
But after talking everything through, we realized something much simpler would create the most natural experience.
Greg would tell Priscilla he had booked a family photo session while they were visiting Palm Springs.
Then something funny happened.
Before Greg even had the chance to bring it up...
Priscilla looked at him and said,
"We should take family photos while we're here."
Sometimes it really feels like the universe is helping behind the scenes.
At that point, everything fell into place.
Why Moorten Botanical Garden Is Such a Unique Proposal Location
If you've never visited Moorten Botanical Garden, it's one of Palm Springs' hidden gems.
Founded in 1938, the family-owned botanical garden showcases thousands of desert plants from across North America and beyond.
Despite its worldwide reputation among plant enthusiasts, the garden remains surprisingly intimate.
One thing many people don't realize before arriving is that it isn't a massive botanical garden.
In fact, you can comfortably explore the entire property in less than ten minutes.
The winding paths, towering cacti, desert flowers, and unique plant collections create countless beautiful backdrops within a relatively small space.
For photographers, however, the compact layout creates an interesting challenge.
Although the garden appears much larger in photographs, there are only a handful of areas that provide enough open shade during the middle of the day for flattering portraits.
Knowing how the light moves through the garden becomes incredibly important.
Proposal Day in Palm Springs
The morning of May 30, Steph and I arrived around 11:00 AM.
Parking is straightforward but often surprises first-time visitors.
There isn't a dedicated parking lot directly attached to the garden.
Most guests either park along South Palm Canyon Drive or use the adjacent dirt parking area across the street before walking over.
After paying admission (currently $7 per adult; children may have different admission rates, so it's always a good idea to check the garden's latest pricing before your visit), we walked through the garden to evaluate the morning light and choose the best locations.
One recommendation we almost always give couples planning a proposal here:
Arrive as close to opening as possible.
Morning temperatures are cooler.
The light is softer.
And you'll usually experience fewer visitors than later in the afternoon.
That extra breathing room makes the proposal feel much more intimate.
After scouting the property, all that was left to do...
Was wait.
Turning Family Photos Into Forever
A short time later, Greg, Priscilla, and their son arrived.
Everything immediately felt relaxed.
Exactly what we hoped for.
Rather than rushing toward the proposal, we began exactly like any normal family photography session.
We spent the first several minutes walking through the garden together.
Talking.
Laughing.
Capturing candid family moments.
Taking a few posed portraits.
The warm-up gave everyone a chance to become comfortable in front of the camera, making the proposal itself feel completely natural.
Eventually, we made our way toward one of the garden's most recognizable features.
The towering Organ Pipe Cactus.
It's one of the iconic landmarks visitors immediately recognize when they think of Moorten Botanical Garden.
We positioned the family together and took a few photographs.
Then, just as planned, we smiled and said,
"Everyone look over there for just a second..."
As Priscilla turned her attention away, Greg quietly stepped back.
Reached into his pocket.
Took a deep breath.
And dropped to one knee.
When she turned back around...
Everything changed.
She smiled.
She laughed.
Happy tears filled her eyes.
Then came the answer Greg had been waiting weeks to hear.
"Yes."
For a few beautiful moments, the garden seemed to disappear.
It became just the three of them.
A family beginning an entirely new chapter together.
Celebrating Their First Moments as Fiancés
After giving them a few quiet moments together, we spent the next twenty minutes creating engagement portraits throughout the garden.
The desert landscape creates an entirely different feeling than many Southern California proposal locations.
Instead of ocean cliffs or mountain forests, you're surrounded by towering cacti, winding pathways, desert blooms, and warm desert light.
Every corner offers something unique.
Although the garden itself is compact, the variety of textures makes every image feel different.
Pro Tip: Pair Moorten Botanical Garden with Andreas Canyon
If your schedule allows, here's one recommendation we love sharing with couples.
Propose inside Moorten Botanical Garden...
Then drive approximately 10 minutes to Andreas Canyon for your engagement session.
The contrast is incredible.
One moment you're surrounded by towering desert cacti.
Minutes later you're walking beneath California fan palms beside flowing water in one of Palm Springs' most beautiful desert oases.
It almost feels like visiting two completely different worlds in a single afternoon.
For couples wanting the greatest variety in their proposal gallery, this combination is difficult to beat.

Plan Your Joshua Tree Proposal
Why Joshua Tree National Park Is One of the Best Places to Propose in California
Joshua Tree offers something that very few proposal destinations can.
Space.
Instead of crowded boardwalks or busy beaches, Joshua Tree gives couples room to slow down, disconnect, and truly enjoy the moment together.
Depending on where you propose, you'll find:
Iconic Joshua trees
Massive granite rock formations
Sweeping desert landscapes
Panoramic mountain overlooks
Incredible sunsets
Some of the darkest skies in Southern California
Whether you're envisioning a quiet desert trail or an overlook stretching across the Coachella Valley, Joshua Tree provides an unforgettable setting to begin your next chapter.
Our Favorite Places to Propose in Joshua Tree National Park
Every couple imagines something different.
Some dream of endless mountain views.
Others picture wandering through Joshua trees as the sun sets.
These are some of our favorite proposal locations.
Keys View
If you're visiting Joshua Tree for the first time, Keys View is one of our top recommendations.
Located more than 5,000 feet above sea level, Keys View overlooks:
Coachella Valley
The San Andreas Fault
The Salton Sea
Mount San Jacinto
Mount San Gorgonio
It's one of the most dramatic overlooks in Southern California while remaining easily accessible without a long hike.
One feature many visitors are surprised to learn is that Keys View is one of the few locations inside Joshua Tree National Park with reliable cell service.
That becomes incredibly valuable on proposal day.
We can confirm arrival times, communicate if needed, send updated GPS pins, and make last-minute adjustments before the proposal begins.
Since reception throughout much of Joshua Tree is limited or nonexistent, Keys View offers an extra level of confidence for destination couples traveling from out of state.
Golden hour here is spectacular.
As the afternoon light softens, the mountains and desert slowly transition into warm shades of gold, orange, pink, and purple.
Juniper Flats Backcountry
If your dream photos include iconic Joshua trees, this is one of our favorite locations.
Juniper Flats offers:
Endless Joshua trees
Quiet dirt roads
Wide-open desert scenery
Beautiful golden-hour light
Incredible engagement portraits
Many of our couples choose to propose at Keys View before heading to Juniper Flats for engagement photos.
The combination creates an incredible storytelling experience.
Hidden Desert Pullouts
Sometimes the best proposal locations aren't the busiest.
Joshua Tree has countless quiet desert roads and scenic pullouts perfect for couples looking for privacy.
When recommending these locations, we consider:
Time of day
Privacy
Lighting
Walking distance
Accessibility
Seasonal crowds
Every proposal is different.
Your location should reflect your story.
When Is the Best Time to Propose?
Golden Hour (Our Favorite)
Golden hour is our first recommendation.
Temperatures become more comfortable.
The light softens dramatically.
The desert begins glowing in warm colors that photograph beautifully.
If you're planning a sunset proposal, this is the time we almost always recommend.
Sunrise
Sunrise offers:
Cooler temperatures
Fewer visitors
Peaceful trails
Beautiful soft light
It's an excellent option for couples wanting maximum privacy.
Midday
Midday proposals can work during the cooler months.
During late spring and summer, however, afternoon temperatures often become extremely hot.
Whenever possible, we recommend planning around sunrise or sunset.
Best Time of Year to Visit Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree is beautiful year-round, but every season offers something different.
Fall
Comfortable temperatures
Incredible sunsets
Fewer crowds
Winter
Ideal hiking weather
Cooler daytime temperatures
Excellent proposal conditions
Spring
Possible wildflower blooms
Longer days
One of the busiest seasons
Summer
Incredible evening skies
Very hot afternoons

Cover Stories That Actually Work
One of the biggest questions we receive is:

The answer depends on your trip.
Some of our favorite cover stories include:
Watching the sunset
Exploring Joshua Tree National Park
Going on a scenic hike
Visiting Keys View before dinner
Taking vacation photos together
Exploring another part of the park
The best cover stories never feel forced.
They simply feel like part of the adventure.
Should You Hire a Proposal Photographer?
We're admittedly a little biased.
But yes.
The proposal itself lasts only seconds.
The photographs become part of your family's history forever.
A proposal photographer also helps with far more than photography.
We'll guide you through:
Planning
Positioning
Timing
Location strategy
Cover stories
Proposal cues
Backup plans
Most of our clients tell us having someone guide the experience allowed them to relax and simply enjoy the moment.
What Should You Wear?
Joshua Tree photographs beautifully with natural earth tones.
Some of our favorites include:
Cream
White
Beige
Rust
Olive
Sage
Brown
Soft blue
Avoid large logos whenever possible.
Comfortable shoes are also recommended if you're exploring multiple locations throughout the park.
