He wanted to propose to Priscilla.

And he wanted their son to be part of one of the biggest moments in their family's story.

They would be visiting Palm Springs from out of town and hoped to propose on May 30 at Moorten Botanical Garden.

With just over two weeks before proposal day, we had plenty of time to build something meaningful.

The challenge wasn't finding a beautiful location.

It was finding the perfect way to include the person who mattered most to both of them.

Planning a Family Surprise Proposal

One of our favorite parts about proposal planning is brainstorming ideas that feel personal.

During our conversations with Greg, we explored several possibilities.

A custom shirt that read:

"Mommy, Will You Marry Daddy?"

A surprise ring bearer moment.

A hidden sign.

Even having their son help present the ring.

Every idea felt special.

But after talking everything through, we realized something much simpler would create the most natural experience.

Greg would tell Priscilla he had booked a family photo session while they were visiting Palm Springs.

Then something funny happened.

Before Greg even had the chance to bring it up...

Priscilla looked at him and said,

"We should take family photos while we're here."

Sometimes it really feels like the universe is helping behind the scenes.

At that point, everything fell into place.

Why Moorten Botanical Garden Is Such a Unique Proposal Location

If you've never visited Moorten Botanical Garden, it's one of Palm Springs' hidden gems.

Founded in 1938, the family-owned botanical garden showcases thousands of desert plants from across North America and beyond.

Despite its worldwide reputation among plant enthusiasts, the garden remains surprisingly intimate.

One thing many people don't realize before arriving is that it isn't a massive botanical garden.

In fact, you can comfortably explore the entire property in less than ten minutes.

The winding paths, towering cacti, desert flowers, and unique plant collections create countless beautiful backdrops within a relatively small space.

For photographers, however, the compact layout creates an interesting challenge.

Although the garden appears much larger in photographs, there are only a handful of areas that provide enough open shade during the middle of the day for flattering portraits.

Knowing how the light moves through the garden becomes incredibly important.

Proposal Day in Palm Springs

The morning of May 30, Steph and I arrived around 11:00 AM.

Parking is straightforward but often surprises first-time visitors.

There isn't a dedicated parking lot directly attached to the garden.

Most guests either park along South Palm Canyon Drive or use the adjacent dirt parking area across the street before walking over.

After paying admission (currently $7 per adult; children may have different admission rates, so it's always a good idea to check the garden's latest pricing before your visit), we walked through the garden to evaluate the morning light and choose the best locations.

One recommendation we almost always give couples planning a proposal here:

Arrive as close to opening as possible.

Morning temperatures are cooler.

The light is softer.

And you'll usually experience fewer visitors than later in the afternoon.

That extra breathing room makes the proposal feel much more intimate.

After scouting the property, all that was left to do...

Was wait.

Turning Family Photos Into Forever

A short time later, Greg, Priscilla, and their son arrived.

Everything immediately felt relaxed.

Exactly what we hoped for.

Rather than rushing toward the proposal, we began exactly like any normal family photography session.

We spent the first several minutes walking through the garden together.

Talking.

Laughing.

Capturing candid family moments.

Taking a few posed portraits.

The warm-up gave everyone a chance to become comfortable in front of the camera, making the proposal itself feel completely natural.

Eventually, we made our way toward one of the garden's most recognizable features.

The towering Organ Pipe Cactus.

It's one of the iconic landmarks visitors immediately recognize when they think of Moorten Botanical Garden.

We positioned the family together and took a few photographs.

Then, just as planned, we smiled and said,

"Everyone look over there for just a second..."

As Priscilla turned her attention away, Greg quietly stepped back.

Reached into his pocket.

Took a deep breath.

And dropped to one knee.

When she turned back around...

Everything changed.

She smiled.

She laughed.

Happy tears filled her eyes.

Then came the answer Greg had been waiting weeks to hear.

"Yes."

For a few beautiful moments, the garden seemed to disappear.
