👉 Book Your Courthouse Session
1. Book the Earliest Time Slot Available
Crowds build fast. The light shifts. The vibe changes. A quiet 8:30am appointment can feel like magic. By 11am, it’s chaos—especially at high-traffic courthouses like Santa Ana or Chula Vista.
2. Arrive Early (Like… Really Early)
Don’t arrive on time. Arrive before time. There’s security, parking, ID checks, and that one pen that doesn’t work. Build in a buffer so you can breathe.
3. The Staircase Photos? You Have a 30-Minute Window
If you're dreaming of those iconic indoor shots on the courthouse staircase or balcony—do them right after your ceremony, or even before, if you check in early. By late morning, those spaces are packed.
4. Your Ceremony Might Be Over in 2 Minutes (Literally)
Civil ceremonies are short. Some officiants get right to it. If you want to personalize your vows, ask in advance if you're allowed to read them. Otherwise, it’s blink-and-it’s-over.
5. Bring Only Who Matters—And Make Sure They Know What to Expect
You’re only allowed two witnesses to watch you sign your marriage certificate. One of those can be a close friend or family member—and the other often ends up being your photographer. Keep that in mind as you plan who will be present for this special moment. As a photographer, don’t miss the opportunity to capture the details: the signing of the certificate, the exchange of rings, or that moment the bride or groom quietly tears up. Most courthouses have guest limits. Some don’t allow photos during the license signing. Prepare your people. The less chaos, the more space for emotion.
6. Watch That Parking Meter
In Santa Ana, you’ll get 2 hours max on the meter. But with delays, lines, and photos, you’ll likely go over. We’ve had to run back mid-shoot to feed the meter. Not ideal.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Dress Up
Just because it’s “simple” doesn’t mean it can’t be stunning. We’ve had brides in tailored jumpsuits, grooms in velvet blazers, and couples who matched their dog’s bowtie to their bouquet. Make it yours.
8. Have a Game Plan for Afterwards
Even if it’s just a lunch reservation, a beach walk, or a post-ceremony toast—celebrate somehow. You’re married. That deserves a moment.
9. Photos Make the Moment Last
It goes fast—faster than you expect. The license signing, the walk down the hallway, the tiny chapel… it’s over before it begins. But photos let you feel it again. If you’re hiring a photographer, trust them to guide the timeline and keep it light but intentional.
10. It’s Your Day. You Get to Decide How It Feels.
Civil doesn’t mean boring. Quiet doesn’t mean less important. Your courthouse wedding is the beginning of your story. Make it feel like you.
11. Share Your GPS Coordinates—Seriously
Sharing your exact location via GPS is a game-changer on the day of your civil ceremony. Whether you're parking, waiting in line, or already inside the building, having real-time location sharing between you, your partner, and your photographer removes the stress of texting "Where are you?" while trying to enjoy the moment.
Drop a pin at the entrance you'll be using, not just the building. Some courthouses (like Santa Ana) have multiple entrances and security lines—this makes a big difference.
12. If You’re Scheduled at 9AM—Be There at 8:45, No Excuses
Courthouses run on their time, not yours. If you’re scheduled for 9:00 AM, show up early and check in the moment you arrive. We’ve seen couples show up just five minutes late and lose their spot—with no warning, no flexibility, and no way to get back on the schedule. Some courthouses will push you back without notice, and you could be waiting hours.
13. Test Your Flash and Know Your Settings Before It Matters
Courthouses are notoriously tricky for lighting. Low ceilings, mixed light sources, and zero time to adjust mid-ceremony. If you’re a photographer, test your flash inside the building as early as possible. Grab a few test shots near the ceremony room, staircase, and window areas to lock in your settings ahead of time.
Even if you’re shooting with natural light, knowing your ISO baseline before you walk into the chapel makes all the difference in your final gallery.
14. Visualize the Worst So You Can Handle It With Grace
Before every civil wedding we photograph, we take 60 seconds to mentally run through the "what ifs":
What if security takes 20 minutes?
What if the staircase is full of people?
What if it rains?
What if someone forgets their ID?
What if we run out of time inside?
When you plan for the worst, you stay grounded in the best parts of the day: the love, the vows, and the story you came here to tell.
15. Fuel Yourself First
As a photographer, don’t forget the basics: eat something before the day starts. Whether it’s a real breakfast or just a protein bar and coffee, fuel and hydrate so you don’t burn out halfway through. Bring water, snacks, and backup caffeine—you’ll thank yourself later.
16. Bring Wet Wipes for Emergency Touch-Ups
Accidents happen. Lipstick smudges, suit lint, stray makeup lines—you name it. Keeping a pack of wet wipes or a mini emergency kit in your bag can save the day for the bride, groom, or anyone stepping in front of your lens. And while you’re at it, bring tissues too—someone always tears up during the vows or certificate signing, and you’ll be ready when they do. Accidents happen. Lipstick smudges, suit lint, stray makeup lines—you name it. Keeping a pack of wet wipes or a mini emergency kit in your bag can save the day for the bride, groom, or anyone stepping in front of your lens.
17. Communication Is Everything
This one’s for the photographers out there: communication is key to managing the flow of the day. The couple already has a million things on their mind—so take ownership of the timeline. Know the layout of the courthouse, the order of events, and how much time to allocate for each moment. Check in regularly. Use any downtime wisely by scouting spaces or grabbing shots inside or outside before crowds fill in. The more clearly you communicate, the smoother the day will feel for everyone.
18. Have a Pinterest Story Board Ready
This tip is small but powerful. Having a Pinterest board of poses and inspiration helps immensely if you hit a moment of uncertainty during the shoot. Whether you're indoors with tricky light or outdoors between locations, a quick scroll through pre-saved ideas can keep things flowing smoothly and creatively.

The Beauty of a Quiet Proposal: Why Some Love Stories Don’t Need an Audience
Not every love story needs an audience. In fact, some of the most powerful moments happen in silence—no big crowds, no viral videos, just two people choosing forever. That’s the heart of a quiet proposal. Whether it’s in your living room, on a morning walk, or at sunset along the coast of San Diego or Orange County, quiet proposals are deeply personal and intentionally private.
This blog dives into the rising trend of quiet proposals and what they really represent: authenticity, emotional presence, and love without performance. We share real stories—including our own—and explore why more couples are stepping away from big reveals and leaning into the stillness of intimate moments. Whether you’re planning to pop the question without the pressure or you simply want to create a moment that’s entirely yours, we’ll guide you through meaningful ways to propose—and how to preserve it without disrupting it. Because the most unforgettable love stories? They’re often the quietest ones.

In a world obsessed with going viral, there’s something profoundly powerful about keeping the most important moment of your life between just the two of you. The rise of the quiet proposal is a gentle rebellion—a return to intimacy, to truth, and to love without spectacle. It’s not about shock value or Instagram views. It’s about meaning. And for many couples in Orange County, San Diego, and across Southern California, that quieter path feels just right.
Whether it happens over morning coffee, during a sunset walk, or in the comfort of your own home, a quiet proposal isn’t about doing less—it’s about doing what matters most. There’s no big production. No audience. Just the two of you, a question, and a moment that’s yours forever.
I know this personally, because that’s how I asked Stephanie to marry me.

Our Story: A Quiet Proposal Before Social Media Knew Everything
Back then, I didn’t have Instagram or engagement Pinterest boards. I didn’t know how to plan a styled shoot, I couldn’t tell you what time golden hour started, and I certainly didn’t think to hire a photographer. I just knew I loved her.
It was 11 years ago. We were getting ready for bed—just another quiet night together. Stephanie walked into the bathroom to wash up, and while she was gone, I pulled out the ring. When she came back into the room, I was on one knee. No music, no flowers, no fancy setup—just me, hoping she’d say yes.
And she did.
If I’m being honest, there’s a part of me that wishes I could go back and make it more special for her. Not because I regret the way I asked, but because I now understand how powerful those small moments can be when they’re preserved. I would have loved a photo of that exact second. Or even a quiet portrait the next day to remember how we felt. But we didn’t have that. And in a way, that’s what inspired us to start doing this work—so that other couples can.
Why Quiet Proposals Are Trending (And Timeless)
Across Orange County and San Diego, more couples are ditching the elaborate setups for something that feels more grounded. Here's why:
1. It’s Personal, Not Performative
You’re not proposing for content—you’re proposing for connection. Quiet proposals keep the focus where it belongs: on the love.
2. No Pressure, Just Presence
Without a crowd or a camera in your face, there’s no anxiety, no distractions. Just the two of you, being yourselves.
3. Perfect for Private People
Not everyone wants a spotlight. Quiet proposals honor introverted love and deep relationships that don’t need validation from the world.
4. They’re Often More Memorable
Big moments can be blurry. Quiet moments—when your partner leans in and whispers “yes”—those stick.
Can You Still Capture a Quiet Proposal? Absolutely.
We believe in documenting love stories without disrupting them. Whether it’s:
A lifestyle session at home where one of you proposes mid-breakfast,
A “morning after” shoot to celebrate the engagement in your own space,
Or a photo session disguised as a couples shoot that turns into a surprise proposal…
We’ve done them all—quietly, intentionally, and respectfully. We know when to be present and when to disappear into the background.

Why Timing Matters at the Old OC Courthouse
Here’s our honest tip: book your civil marriage appointment as early in the day as possible. The courthouse opens at 8:00 AM, and it fills up fast—especially on Fridays or near long weekends. By the time we wrapped our indoor photos just before 11:00 AM, the entire building was packed with families, couples, and other wedding parties. There would’ve been no way to capture clean, uninterrupted shots on the iconic staircase or upstairs hallway after that.
Early time slots = more privacy and cleaner shots. Trust us.
Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Married at the Historical OC Courthouse
1. Schedule your appointment in advance
Visit the official OC Clerk-Recorder website to book your civil marriage license signing and optional ceremony. They offer weekday slots at this location.
📍 Location: 211 W. Santa Ana Blvd, Santa Ana, CA 92701
2. Arrive early (aim for 7:45 AM)
Even with an appointment, you'll need time to check in, go through security, and get your bearings. We recommend showing up early so you can breathe, take it in, and prep for photos.
3. Marriage license signing
Your appointment will begin with checking IDs and signing paperwork. This typically takes 15–30 minutes.
4. Optional chapel ceremony
You can opt for a quick civil ceremony performed by an officiant in their charming vintage chapel. If you choose this route, bring witnesses or use courthouse staff. Vows are short and sweet—but don’t let that fool you. There’s still plenty of emotion packed into those few minutes.
5. Take advantage of the building for photos
After the ceremony, head upstairs for portraits on the grand staircase and hallways. The natural light in the building before 11am is perfect, especially for romantic, editorial-style shots.
6. Watch your parking
Parking is metered and limited to 2 hours, but chances are you’ll need more time. We were there almost 4 hours and had to run back out mid-session to feed the meter. Luckily, we didn’t get ticketed (probably because of how busy it was), but don’t count on luck—set an alarm to avoid a fine.
Our Quick Tips for Couples Eloping Here
Book the earliest appointment available (8:00–9:00 AM)
Bring printed appointment confirmations and all necessary documents
Keep your group small—space inside the courthouse is limited
Wear comfortable shoes (you'll walk more than you think)
Add a personal touch—bring your own bouquet or vow books
Plan time for post-ceremony photos outside under the palm trees and in front of the sandstone walls

Step-by-Step Guide to Planning a Secret Picnic Proposal at Windansea Beach
1. Choose Your Perfect Spot
Windansea’s rocky formations and quiet nooks make it easy to set up a semi-private scene. We recommend the area near the famous palm-covered surf shack or along the tide pools, where you’ll have both scenery and space for photos.
2. Do You Need a Permit?
Yes, permits are required for professional photography or commercial setups.
City of San Diego Permits: Apply at least 10 days in advance for beach setups.
Alcohol Restrictions: No alcohol or glass containers are allowed.
Tip: Working with a professional picnic vendor often means they’ll handle permits for you — making the process simple.
3. Hire a Luxury Picnic Vendor
For a styled and stress-free setup, hire local San Diego vendors such as:
Pop Up Picnic Co. – One of the few licensed companies allowed on California State Beaches.
Pure Bliss Picnics – Specializes in romantic proposals and boho setups with locally sourced grazing boards.
These vendors offer complete packages with low tables, decorative pillows, tableware, lanterns, and even charcuterie spreads — all designed to create a cozy and Instagram-worthy atmosphere.
4. Add Personal Touches
Custom Signage: “Will you marry me?” signs or Polaroid displays of your relationship.
Flowers & Candles: Local florists can provide coastal-inspired blooms to match the beach theme.
Surprise Reveal: Arrive slightly later so your partner walks into a fully staged picnic moment.
5. Plan the Proposal Moment
Coordinate with your photographer so they can capture the surprise candidly from a hidden spot. We’ll guide you on timing — usually 20–30 minutes before sunset is ideal for that warm, golden glow.
6. Celebrate & Capture Candid Photos
After the “yes,” pop a bottle of champagne (plastic bottle if on public sand), enjoy the picnic spread, and let us capture romantic portraits while you soak up the moment.
Why a Secret Picnic Proposal at Windansea Beach Works
Iconic yet Intimate: It’s one of San Diego’s most picturesque beaches, but with the right timing, it feels secluded.
Stress-Free Setup: Local vendors can handle styling, food, and permits.
Picture-Perfect Backdrop: The golden sunset and rugged coastline make for stunning engagement photos.

Step-by-Step: Planning a Surprise Proposal With Your Dog in San Diego
🏞 Step 1: Choose the Right Dog-Friendly Proposal Location
San Diego is packed with scenic spots that welcome pups. Some of our favorite photogenic + pet-friendly proposal locations include:
Presidio Park – Lush grass, tree cover, and old-world architecture
Kate Sessions Park – Hilltop views of the bay, ideal for sunset lighting
La Jolla Shores (North End) – Quiet, coastal, and perfect for sandpaw prints
Balboa Park (dog-friendly zones) – Historic charm with endless backdrops
📸 Photo Tip:
Choose a location that allows your dog to roam or sit comfortably without distraction. Morning light or golden hour is best to avoid harsh shadows and crowds.
🐶 Step 2: Prep Your Pup (and the Props)
You’ll want your dog looking sharp and calm. A quick grooming session, a favorite toy or treat, and some leash practice in public spaces go a long way.
Proposal prop ideas:
Custom Dog Tag – Etsy sellers like TheCopperPoppy or DogArtTags offer engraved tags that say: “Will you marry my human?”
Bandana Sign – Phrases like “My humans are getting married!” or “She said yes!” can be tied on pre- or post-proposal.
Ring Pouch on Collar – For the bold: tuck the ring box into a secure pouch (we recommend testing this ahead of time!).
🎬 Step 3: Disguise the Setup as a Casual Photoshoot
Tell your partner you're doing a family shoot with your dog — something you’ve always wanted. We’ll help keep the tone relaxed and candid, like you’re simply making memories.
Bonus: This gives us cover to pose you naturally, scout lighting, and get into position for the big moment without giving it away.
💍 Step 4: Cue the Proposal
You’ll decide the exact cue in advance with your photographer. For example:
While walking together, your dog runs up wearing the custom sign
You kneel down pretending to adjust the leash... and instead pull out the ring
Your pup sits between you holding a framed photo of your first date, then you pop the question
🎉 Step 5: Celebrate + Capture the Joy
Once they say yes, it’s time to play, cuddle, and pop some (dog-safe) champagne. We’ll continue capturing candid and posed engagement photos of you three as a family — including solo shots of your pup, because they’re part of the story too.
Where to Buy Dog Proposal Props (Fast or Local):
Etsy: For handmade signs, bandanas, and tags
Petco (San Diego): Quick same-day pet outfits or accessories
Amazon Prime: 1-day shipping on ring pouches or tuxedo harnesses
Michael’s or Hobby Lobby (DIYers): Craft your own sign with wood or felt
💡 Bonus Tips:
Bring a friend or handler to manage your dog during the proposal
Use a favorite treat or squeaky toy for posing
Let us know your dog’s name + quirks — we love to prep for their personality

📍 Why Shell Beach in La Jolla?
Location: Shell Beach, 1000 Coast Blvd, La Jolla, CA 92037
Tucked between the more popular La Jolla Cove and Scripps Park, Shell Beach is quiet, intimate, and cinematic. Its tidepools and rocky formations give it a storybook feel—especially during golden hour.
Unlike touristy beaches, Shell feels like a secret. It’s where seafoam kisses stone and wind carries your words farther than you thought possible. It’s natural, raw, and just the right amount of unexpected.
💡 How the Message in a Bottle Proposal Works (Step by Step)
With our Undercover Yes Package, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Here’s exactly how it plays out:
📝 1. You Write the Letter
We’ll guide you with samples if needed, but the magic comes from your own words. It can be sweet, funny, poetic—whatever feels real to you.
End with something like:
“By the time you read this, I’ll be right behind you… with something to ask.”
Seal it inside a clear bottle and bring it with you to the shoot.
🪨 2. We Hide the Bottle for You
We arrive early, scout the area, and discreetly tuck the bottle among the rocks or tidepools. Once hidden, we send you the exact GPS pin, so you know exactly where to walk your partner to “discover” it.
You don’t have to guess or worry—we handle the setup and logistics.
🚶♂️ 3. Take a Casual Walk
You suggest a beach walk—maybe after brunch in La Jolla or before a sunset hangout. As you follow the GPS cue and “find” the bottle, hand it to your partner and ask them to read it.
As they open the note, we’re nearby—disguised as beachgoers or tourists, camera ready.
💍 4. The Proposal Moment
They read your words. The note slows them down. The ocean surrounds you. When they turn around, you’re already down on one knee.

Where the Ocean Crashes—and the Question Hits Even Harder
If you're dreaming of a surprise proposal in San Diego that’s raw, cinematic, and wildly romantic, keep reading.
Most people think of beaches and wineries when planning their engagement moment. But what if you could say “Will you marry me?” on dramatic cliffs, with waves crashing below and the entire Pacific stretching out behind you?

We haven’t captured a proposal here yet—but we’re ready to. And to make it happen, we’re offering 30% off to the first couple who books this exact location with us. 📍 About Cabrillo National Monument Tidepools
Location: 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr, San Diego, CA 92106
Official site: nps.gov/cabr
Located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula, Cabrillo National Monument is part lighthouse, part national park, and part coastal wonderland. Just past the main visitor center, a winding road leads down to the tidepool access area, which opens up to sweeping cliffs and rare, rocky shorelines.
🌿 Why It’s Perfect for a Surprise Proposal
1. It’s visually stunning and unique.
You’ve got layered rock formations, crashing waves, wild wind, and an untouched natural backdrop. It feels like Big Sur meets San Diego.
2. It’s off the beaten path.
Most proposals happen at beaches or downtown rooftops. This one? It’s wild, raw, and unexpected. Your person will think you’re just going on a scenic adventure.
3. You can make it feel like a private moment.
With the right timing (usually weekday afternoons or golden hour near closing time), you’ll have stretches of cliffside space all to yourself.
4. The photos will look like a dream.
Think long, windswept shots with ocean mist in the air. The tidepools create layers and textures that pop on camera. It's editorial, emotional, and totally your vibe if you’re looking for that non-traditional edge.
🥾 Does It Require a Lot of Hiking?
Surprisingly—not really.
There’s a short downhill walk from the parking lot to the tidepool area (about 0.5 miles). The trail is paved at first, then transitions to rocky terrain. You don’t need to be a hiker, but sturdy shoes and a bit of balance help.
This isn’t a full-on hike—but it does feel like an adventure.
🕰️ Best Time to Go:
Golden hour: The cliffs glow warm and golden about an hour before sunset.
Low tide: That’s when tidepools are fully visible and safest to walk near.
Weekdays: Fewer people, more space for intimacy and clean shots.
📸 What We’ll Capture for You
If you're the kind of couple that values raw emotion over perfection, windblown hair over polished poses, and wild coastlines over crowded restaurants—this is your scene. Here’s what we’ll capture:
Candid walking shots down to the cliffs
The exact moment you drop to one knee—shot wide for drama and close for emotion
Reactions, tears, laughter
Post-proposal portraits along the rocks and cliffs
A cinematic engagement reel you’ll never stop watching

The Ghost of Who You Could’ve Been: Overcoming Self-Doubt, Imposter Syndrome & Leveling Up
We all imagine a stronger, healthier, more confident version of ourselves—the one who’s disciplined, successful, grounded. They exist just a few steps ahead of us, reaching out, waiting. But every time we choose comfort over growth, that version begins to fade. That’s the ghost of who you could’ve been. On a recent hike with Steph, I shared how imposter syndrome has followed me through every chapter of my life—from my wild twenties, to retail management, and now as a self-employed creative chasing this camper van dream. I’ve realized that every time I level up, the old me fights back with self-doubt, trying to pull me down. That’s not weakness—it’s fear of outgrowing who I used to be. But every rep, every risk, every uncomfortable step forward is a way to silence that fear and inch closer to the life you’re meant to live. Don’t let your future self disappear. Show up today—because the ghost of your potential only haunts the people who never take the leap.
Trying to figure things out when you don’t even know the first step? Yeah—we remember that feeling. If you just need to pick someone’s brain or talk it through, we’re all ears and more than happy to help.
👉 Let’s Connect
Imagine for a second the best version of yourself—the one you secretly hope to become. They’re in shape, confident, present. They move through life with purpose and peace. They’re healthy, successful, full of charisma—not because life was easy, but because they didn’t stop showing up.
Now imagine that version of you standing just a few steps ahead, hand reaching out, waiting for you to close the gap.
But instead of moving toward them, you hesitate. You take the easier route. You skip the workout, scroll instead of study, say "maybe tomorrow" one more time. Slowly, that future self begins to fade. Not with anger—but with heartbreak. They reach out for you, but their hand starts disappearing.
And then comes the silence. The one where you know you’re ghosting your own potential.
On a recent hike with Steph, I shared something I’ve carried for most of my adult life: imposter syndrome. It’s followed me through every chapter—my twenties lost in nightlife, then grinding my way up from a seasonal sales position to becoming a store manager, and now, self-employed and chasing this crazy dream of living out of a camper van with our dogs and camera gear.
Even now, as we're finally connecting the last dots to turn this vision into reality, I sometimes feel like I don’t belong here. Like it’s all going to blow up in my face someday.
But the more I’ve sat with it, the more I’ve realized—it's not that I don’t belong. It’s that my old self is scared. The version of me that was comfortable staying small doesn’t want to be left behind. So he whispers doubts. He tells me I’m not ready. He tries to sabotage the progress because he knows once I level up, there’s no going back.
And that’s the battle.
Every step forward is a fight to let go of who you were in order to become who you're meant to be. It’s not easy. But every day you show up, every rep, every risk, every quiet decision to keep going—it brings you closer to the version of you that’s still waiting, still reaching, still believing in you.
So don’t let them disappear. Grab their hand. And become the ghost that lived.
What would your future self thank you for doing today? Comment below or share this with someone who needs to hear it.

Best Places Inside the Gardens to Propose
1. Tropical Conservatory (Greenhouse)
Vibe: Warm, lush, and immersive.
Proposal Tip: Wait for a quiet moment by the koi pond or beneath the hanging orchids—drop to one knee while your partner admires the space.
Photography Tip: The natural humidity creates soft, diffused lighting—perfect for golden hour vibes, even mid-day.
2. Rose Garden Pathway
Vibe: Pure romance, surrounded by blooms.
Proposal Tip: Take a walk down the winding path and stop at a bend framed by roses to surprise your partner.
Pro Tip: Spring and summer are best for full blooms. Scout ahead to find the most colorful stretch.
Photography Tip: Use a 50mm or 85mm lens for that creamy background blur to highlight the couple against the florals.
3. Palm Garden
Vibe: Tropical, secluded, and calm.
Proposal Tip: Use this space for a quiet moment, asking your partner to turn for a "portrait" before the reveal.
Photography Tip: Capture wide shots here—tall palms create symmetrical lines that add depth and elegance to the moment.
4. Central Fountain Courtyard
Vibe: European courtyard meets SoCal sunshine.
Proposal Tip: Pretend to take a seated photo by the fountain—then surprise them with the ring.
Pro Tip: Ask staff if they’ll allow a small bouquet or champagne setup near the fountain ahead of time.
Photography Tip: The tiled flooring and mosaic backdrop look beautiful from overhead or wide-angle compositions.
5. Succulent Garden Arch
Vibe: Artistic, modern, and unique.
Proposal Tip: Have your partner walk through the arch as if for a “frame within a frame” shot—then call their name as they walk through and surprise them.
Photography Tip: Perfect place for editorial-style wide shots. Incorporate textures from the succulents and terracotta surroundings.
6. Japanese Garden Bridge
Vibe: Zen, reflective, peaceful.
Proposal Tip: Pause together on the bridge “to enjoy the view” before getting on one knee.
Pro Tip: Quietest spot in the garden—great for couples who want something extra private.
Photography Tip: Shoot slightly lower to catch the full curve of the bridge, the koi pond, and trees reflected in the water.

10 Solid Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Start Your Own Business (Unless You’re Ready to Cry in the Shower Sometimes)
Starting a business sounds romantic—until you realize you're up at 4:45AM charging batteries, juggling invoices, and wondering if anyone even saw that post you spent hours on. Inspired by Chris Williamson’s podcast and our own messy journey, this blog shares 10 brutally honest reasons why you shouldn’t start your own business—unless you're okay with self-doubt, debt, wearing 12 hats at once, and crying in the shower. From racking up credit cards to working sick and missing out on weekends, Stephanie and I lived it all. But writing this is a reminder to ourselves and maybe to someone out there too: if you show up daily, it does get better. This isn’t just a rant—it’s real-life perspective from two full-time photographers who are still grinding, still learning, and still not giving up.
A black and white photo of us, reflected on the surface of a car — simple, stripped of distraction, and exactly how life feels when you stop making excuses. This image reminds me that life, like this photo, is often black and white. You either show up for yourself every day or you don’t. And if you don’t, that’s fine — just don’t complain when things don’t go your way. After leaving our 9–5 jobs, I learned that truth the hard way. Now, every single day I ask myself: Is this moving me toward my goal, or not? Reflect as often as you can.
I was listening to Chris Williamson on Modern Wisdom the other day when he mentioned a blog titled something like “Reasons You Shouldn’t Start a Business” — and it hit me. Hard. Because I’ve lived it.
When Stephanie and I got furloughed during COVID, we took a leap of faith and decided to go all-in on photography — our side hustle turned last-ditch plan. At first, things looked good. We had a cushion. Over 100 hours of PTO paid out. I cashed out my 401k after seven years with the same company. We thought we were set… until we weren’t.
Suddenly, we were charging groceries, gas, gear, and coffee onto our credit cards. The debt piled up faster than bookings. We doubted ourselves so many times. There were nights we cried, wondering if we made a mistake. And mornings where we faked confidence, packed our gear, and drove out anyway — sometimes to last-minute shoots, sometimes to clients who ghosted us.
That blog reminded me of something else I heard from Gary Vee: everything you create in the beginning is going to suck. Your posts, your offers, your edits — it’s all trial and error. Don’t get stuck in analysis paralysis. Just post it, move on, and do it again. Over time, you get sharper, faster, and better.
But here’s the truth they don’t put on those “Follow your dreams!” mugs: it’s so much harder than you think. It’s like when you’ve been eating junk for years and suddenly expect a six-pack because you did cardio twice and passed on a cheeseburger. Nope. Starting your own business is a grind — slow, thankless, and invisible at first. There’s little to no traction most days, and you’ll feel like quitting more than once.
But if you show up daily, stay consistent, and stop waiting for perfect? You’ll start to see momentum. And weirdly enough, you’ll grow more in six months running your own thing than you would in six years working for someone else.
So inspired by that episode, and based on everything we’ve learned the hard way, here are 10 brutally honest reasons why starting your own business might not be for you — unless you’re into discomfort, debt, and the occasional happy tear when things finally click.
1. You Actually Have to Work Harder (Like… A Lot Harder)
Forget the 9–5. Say hello to the 5–9 (yes, both AM and PM). The hustle doesn’t stop just because you don’t clock in anymore. You are the business — and the janitor, customer service rep, creative director, and unpaid intern. You're the one fixing the broken gear, fielding texts from nervous clients, and shooting for 4 hours on 3 hours of sleep.
2. You’ll Wake Up Earlier Than You Ever Thought Possible
Alarms at 6AM? Luxury. Try 4:45AM wake-ups with a mental to-do list already screaming at you. You’ll be packing gear in the dark, charging batteries you forgot the night before, and praying traffic doesn’t kill your golden hour light.
3. No One Cares as Much as You Do (Seriously, No One)
That logo you obsessed over? Your client didn’t even notice. Your new service launch? Crickets. And that post you spent three hours editing? Your mom gave it a like — maybe.
But here’s the real kicker: it’s supposed to suck at first. Like Gary Vee says, everything you write, post, or work on early on is going to be mid at best. Don’t get stuck in analysis paralysis. Just post it, move on, and keep showing up. The more you do it — like anything in life — the better you get.
And yes, it’s so much harder than it looks. You think a couple reels and a Canva post are going to launch your brand? Think again. It’s months (sometimes years) of silence, of trying new things, of learning what works — and then doing it all over again.
4. You’ll Question Every Life Choice You’ve Ever Made
Multiple times a month, possibly a day. You’ll wonder if you should’ve just stayed at that stable job with benefits, free coffee, and zero existential dread over website traffic or your last invoice getting ghosted.
5. You Can’t Call in Sick (Even When You’re Sick-Sick)
No PTO here. If you’ve got the flu, you better hope you can still hold a camera or type with one hand while sipping tea with the other. If your dog is sick, your car breaks down, or your body’s telling you to rest — too bad. You’ve got a 4PM shoot in Palm Springs and an invoice to pay off.
6. You're Going to Wear Every Hat (and None of Them Fit)
You're the CEO, CMO, CFO, and janitor. You’re also tech support when your client’s download link won’t open. Accounting? That’s on you. SEO? YouTube tutorials. Legal? Google and hope for the best.
7. Motivation Doesn’t Magically Show Up Every Day
Some days you’ll feel unstoppable. Other days you’ll stare at your screen, paralyzed, wondering if you’re in over your head. You'll compare yourself to other creators, photographers, or friends who seem like they’ve got it all figured out — spoiler alert: they don’t either.
8. You Will Miss Out on Things (Weddings, Weekends, Wine Nights)
While your friends are out brunching or sipping wine in Temecula, you’re tweaking your booking form, re-editing a gallery that “just doesn’t feel right,” or trying to learn retargeting ads at midnight with 12 tabs open and a cold cup of coffee.
9. There’s No Guaranteed Paycheck (Only Guaranteed Bills)
Money doesn’t appear every two weeks. One month you’re flush with cash. The next, you’re selling gear to pay for car repairs. Your bank account will flirt with zero more times than you’d like to admit.
10. You’ll Grow in Ways You Never Asked For
You’ll be stretched. Humbled. Burned out. Built back up. You'll learn how to light a room with a flashlight and bounce card when you forget your flash. You’ll learn how to talk to strangers, pitch your value, stand your ground, and still show up with love for the craft — even on the hard days. It’ll feel like a bootcamp for your soul. And weirdly? That’s the part that makes it all worth it.
I know sometimes when I write these behind-the-lens style blogs I might sound a little repetitive… but the truth is, I’m writing these to remind myself, too. You’ve been through the fire. You survived. You’re still here. So keep going.
Thanks for letting me rant — seriously. I appreciate you for reading.

Starting your own business isn’t for everyone. But if reading this didn’t scare you off — if it made you laugh, nod, or even cry a little — then maybe, just maybe, you’re crazy enough to make it work.

Two Outfits, Two Stops: Turning a Temecula Date into a Creative Couples Photography Challenge
When your partner is also your photography partner-in-crime, even date nights turn into creative challenges. For this Temecula adventure, Stephanie gave me a mission: two outfits, two locations, natural light only, and just two lenses—the 85mm prime and 24-70mm zoom. First stop? South Coast Winery, where blue skies, towering palm trees, and lush green lawns perfectly complemented her yellow athletic outfit. The vibrant colors, soft natural light, and breezy vineyard landscape gave us a dreamy golden-hour session. Then we switched it up and drove to Lorimar Winery, a Tuscan-inspired gem that matched her elegant white dress and cheetah-print sunglasses. We leaned into the romance of golden light, textured backdrops, and a slower, more refined vibe. This wasn’t just a photoshoot—it was a creative reset, a couple’s challenge, and a reminder of how constraints can lead to our most inspired work. Whether you're a fellow photography duo or just love unique date ideas, let this inspire your next outing. Bonus: no flashes, just natural light and a love for the craft.
When most couples think of a date in Temecula, they imagine sipping wine, watching the sun set behind the vineyards, and maybe grabbing dinner downtown. But for us—two photographers, partners in life and business—date night looks a little different. Ours comes with lenses, lighting challenges, and just enough pressure to make it fun.
This past weekend, Stephanie tossed out a creative curveball. She said, “I want you to plan a two-outfit shoot in Temecula. Here are the rules.”
Game on.
The Rules:
Only use our 85mm prime and 24-70mm zoom.
Natural light only. No flash, no reflectors.
Location 1 must have palm trees, blue skies, and lush green grass to match a yellow athletic outfit.
Location 2 must complement a white dress with cheetah-print sunglasses—so think elegant winery vibes.
Stop 1: South Coast Winery — Palm Trees, Greenery, and That Yellow Pop
We kicked things off at South Coast Winery, a go-to destination in Temecula known for its palm-lined paths, manicured gardens, and open walkways. It’s one of those places that looks stunning in person—but finding the right frame, especially in mid-day light, took some creative problem-solving.
The lighting wasn’t golden hour—it was bright, direct, and harsh in spots. We had to work quickly, bouncing between shadows and bursts of sunlight while figuring out which angles gave us the look we were after. At first, it was a challenge getting the balance right between highlights and shadows. But once we found this leafy, shaded walkway covered in vines and blooms, the entire vibe shifted.
Stephanie’s yellow athletic outfit absolutely popped under the canopy of green. Framed by symmetrical tree trunks, vibrant florals, and soft dappled light, this setup allowed us to make the most of the mid-day sun without it overpowering the shot. Her confident pose, sneakers, and playful tip of the cap gave the look a bold, joyful energy that kicked the shoot off with serious personality.
We used the 85mm to create that slight background compression, helping her stand out while still showing the depth of the walkway and the lushness around her. The location suddenly didn’t just work—it enhanced the shot.

Stop 2: Vitagliano Vineyards – European Elegance in Temecula Wine Country
For the second outfit—a romantic white lace mini dress paired with bold cheetah-print sunglasses, layered pearls, and sheer red gloves—we wanted a setting that felt cinematic and regal.
Vitagliano Vineyards was made for this look. Tucked away at the end of a quiet road in Temecula, this winery feels like a secret garden pulled straight from Tuscany. Think arched wooden doors, stone walls, terracotta rooftops, and a sparkling lake surrounded by rows of vines. It’s the kind of place where time slows down—and every photo feels like a still from a European indie film.
This shot captures that feeling perfectly. Framed by textured stonework and filtered through soft greenery, Stephanie leans confidently in the archway—part vintage glamour, part wild spirit. Her look played with contrast: the softness of lace against the edge of cheetah print and those fiery red gloves. A boho lace bandana wrapped around her hair added a carefree, feminine touch that grounded the whole ensemble in effortless style.
We leaned heavily on natural light, letting the warmth of golden hour pour through the vines and kiss her skin. The 85mm lens helped us isolate her from the lush background, creating depth and softness, while the surrounding textures added visual tension that elevated the entire frame.
If you’re looking for a Temecula winery location that feels luxurious, artistic, and steeped in charm—Vitagliano Vineyards is it.

The Takeaway: Turn Any Shoot into a Challenge
This shoot reminded us that even something simple—two outfits, two lenses, two locations—can feel like a creative reset. But more importantly, it reminded us not to get complacent in our skills. As photographers, we sometimes rely too much on perfect lighting, golden hour, reflectors, or controlled conditions. This was a chance to strip all that back and really learn.
Shooting in the middle of the day with harsh light and lots of exposure pushed us to get more intentional with our camera settings, read the environment better, and problem-solve on the fly. It wasn’t easy—but it made us better. The challenge reminded us that creativity often comes from constraint.
If you’re a photographer couple (or just creatives with a camera), try building your own version of this. Set parameters, embrace limitations, and turn an ordinary afternoon into something unforgettable.
Oh, and bring snacks. Trust us—photographers get cranky without snacks.

Cheers to turning date night into a lens test.
