Palm Springs vs. Palm Desert vs. Joshua Tree | Where Should You Propose in 2026?
Palm Springs, Palm Desert, or Joshua Tree—which is the best place to propose in 2026? Based on our firsthand experience planning, scouting, and photographing real surprise proposals throughout Southern California's desert region, this guide compares all three destinations. Palm Springs is ideal for restaurants, midcentury style, botanical gardens, and a complete getaway. Palm Desert stands out for luxury resorts, mountain views, palm trees, amenities, and convenience. Joshua Tree is best for adventure, privacy, dramatic landscapes, and iconic desert photography. Compare proposal locations, scenery, weather, accessibility, activities, photography, and logistics to find the destination that fits your proposal.
Palm Springs.
Palm Desert.
Joshua Tree.
They're all part of Southern California's desert region, but planning a surprise proposal at each one creates a completely different experience.
We've photographed and helped plan real proposals throughout this area, from botanical gardens in Palm Springs and Flamingo Island at JW Marriott Desert Springs to the dramatic landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park.
If you're trying to decide between the three, here's the simplest answer:
Choose Palm Springs if you want style, restaurants, resorts, architecture, and plenty to do before and after the proposal.
Choose Palm Desert if you want an upscale resort experience with palm trees, water, mountain views, golf, spas, and everything conveniently nearby.
Choose Joshua Tree if you want adventure, dramatic desert landscapes, rock formations, privacy, and photographs that feel completely removed from the city.
There isn't one location that's better for everyone.
The right choice depends on the experience you want to create.
Here's how we'd compare all three based on what we've learned planning and photographing real surprise proposals throughout the desert.
The hardest part might not be asking "Will you marry me?" It might be deciding where to do it. Palm Springs brings colorful desert style and mountain views. Palm Desert offers polished resorts and romantic oasis settings. Joshua Tree delivers something completely different—wide-open landscapes, iconic rock formations, and a sense of adventure that's hard to replicate anywhere else. We'll help you narrow down the right destination, choose the perfect proposal spot, and plan the timing, logistics, and photography so everything feels effortless when the moment finally arrives. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Choose Your Proposal Experience
First: Palm Springs and Palm Desert Are Not the Same Place
This is worth clearing up immediately.
People often use "Palm Springs" when talking about the greater Coachella Valley, but Palm Springs and Palm Desert are separate cities offering different proposal experiences.
Palm Springs is known for its midcentury-modern architecture, boutique hotels, restaurants, arts, culture, mountain scenery, and classic desert aesthetic.
Palm Desert sits farther southeast in the Coachella Valley and offers a different kind of experience.
For proposals, we especially like Palm Desert when someone wants a resort-centered weekend where the hotel, proposal, engagement photos, dinner, spa, golf, and other activities can all become part of the same trip.
Joshua Tree is different from both.
Once you enter Joshua Tree National Park, you're trading resort amenities for open desert, massive rock formations, Joshua trees, hiking trails, viewpoints, and a much more adventurous experience.
That's one of the first questions we'd ask:
Do you want a city, resort, or national park proposal?
Palm Springs Proposals: Best for Style, Restaurants & a Full Weekend Experience
Palm Springs may be the most versatile of the three.
You can make your proposal elegant.
Retro.
Colorful.
Botanical.
Mountain-focused.
Or turn it into an entire weekend getaway.
For couples who care about the experience surrounding the proposal, that's a major advantage.
You could spend the afternoon exploring Palm Springs.
Grab coffee.
Visit a botanical garden.
Check into a boutique hotel.
Have your proposal around golden hour.
Take engagement photographs.
Then celebrate over dinner and drinks.
Everything can flow naturally.
What We Like About Palm Springs for Proposals
One of Palm Springs' biggest advantages is variety without having to go deep into the wilderness.
You have access to:
Botanical and desert gardens
Midcentury-modern architecture
Boutique hotels
Mountain views
Palm trees
Restaurants
Coffee shops
Pools and resorts
Art and culture
Nightlife
Outdoor activities
For someone flying into Southern California specifically to propose, Palm Springs makes it relatively easy to turn the proposal into an entire vacation.
A Real Palm Springs Proposal: Moorten Botanical Garden
One Palm Springs proposal we'll always remember took place at Moorten Botanical Garden.
Instead of relying on a massive setup, the desert plants and garden environment became the backdrop.
That's one reason we like Palm Springs.
You don't necessarily need to manufacture the scenery.
It's already there.
And unlike Joshua Tree, you can transition quickly from your proposal into restaurants, hotels, drinks, or another activity without spending significant time driving through a national park.
Who Should Choose Palm Springs?
We'd lean toward Palm Springs if you want:
A stylish desert getaway
Midcentury-modern surroundings
Restaurants and nightlife
Botanical gardens
Boutique hotels
Easy activities before and after the proposal
Less wilderness
A proposal that can become part of a complete vacation
It's also a strong choice when one partner doesn't necessarily enjoy hiking or rugged outdoor environments.
You can still get the desert feeling without making your proposal an expedition.
Palm Desert Proposals: Best for Luxury, Resorts & Convenience
Palm Desert is where we'd look if you told us:
"I want the desert and mountains, but I also want everything to feel easy."
Our experience planning Mohamed and Jenny's proposal at JW Marriott Desert Springs showed us exactly why Palm Desert can work so well.
We had:
Water.
Palm trees.
Mountain scenery.
Flamingos.
Restaurants.
A boat ride.
Golf.
A spa.
A hotel.
And multiple engagement-photo locations without having to leave the resort.
That's difficult to beat from a logistical standpoint.
Why Palm Desert Works So Well for Resort Proposals
A resort proposal gives you something Joshua Tree can't:
Infrastructure.
Bathrooms.
Restaurants.
Air conditioning.
Drinks.
Hotel rooms.
Activities.
Shade.
Places to sit.
And somewhere to celebrate immediately afterward.
That might not sound like the most exciting part of planning a proposal.
But on proposal day?
Convenience matters.
Especially if family members, children, older relatives, or anyone with mobility considerations will be involved.
JW Marriott Desert Springs: A Palm Desert Proposal Example
For Mohamed and Jenny, we chose JW Marriott Desert Springs after considering several completely different locations.
Mohamed originally wanted mountain views.
We discussed Joshua Tree.
Idyllwild.
Coachella Valley overlooks.
Eventually, we settled on Palm Desert.
Before proposal day, we personally drove to the resort, walked the property, visited Flamingo Island, studied the routes, considered the light, and created backup plans.
Then we incorporated the resort's boat experience into the proposal.
Mohamed and Jenny enjoyed their evening while we discreetly captured candid photographs.
Eventually, everything led toward Flamingo Island.
And that's where Mohamed proposed.
Why Flamingo Island Is So Different
Palm Desert gave us something neither downtown Palm Springs nor Joshua Tree could replicate.
A desert resort surrounded by:
Water
Flamingos
Palm trees
Manicured landscaping
Mountain scenery
It still looked unmistakably like the desert.
But it felt polished rather than rugged.
That's the Palm Desert advantage.
Who Should Choose Palm Desert?
We'd lean toward Palm Desert if you want:
An upscale resort proposal
Mountain views without hiking
Palm trees and water
Golf
Spa experiences
Restaurants on property
Easy access to bathrooms and amenities
Family-friendly logistics
A complete proposal weekend
Engagement photographs without driving somewhere else afterward
For pure convenience, Palm Desert might be our favorite of the three.
Joshua Tree Proposals: Best for Adventure & Epic Desert Scenery
Then there's Joshua Tree.
This is where you go when the landscape itself is the experience.
Once you're inside Joshua Tree National Park, the experience is completely different from Palm Springs or Palm Desert.
No resort lobby.
No restaurant around the corner.
No valet.
You're trading those conveniences for something else:
Joshua trees.
Rock formations.
Open desert.
Mountain views.
Long roads disappearing into the landscape.
And incredible sunsets.
That's exactly why people fall in love with proposing here.
Why Joshua Tree Photographs So Differently
Joshua Tree gives you enormous natural backgrounds.
Instead of photographing around buildings and resort guests, we're often working with the landscape itself.
That creates proposal photographs that can feel cinematic, adventurous, and completely removed from the city.
For couples who love national parks, road trips, hiking, camping, or simply being outdoors, it's hard to replicate that experience somewhere else.
Keys View for a Surprise Proposal
One of our favorite Joshua Tree proposal experiences happened at Keys View.
There's something special about arriving at an overlook where the landscape stretches out in front of you and realizing:
This is where I'm going to ask someone to marry me.
But Joshua Tree requires more preparation.
We need to think about:
Driving.
Parking.
Walking.
Sunset.
Weather.
Water.
Cell service.
Where everyone will meet.
And exactly where the photographer will be positioned.
There isn't always an easy Plan B five minutes away.
Joshua Tree Requires More Preparation
This is probably the biggest difference between Joshua Tree and the other two destinations.
Inside the national park, amenities are limited and cell service can be unreliable.
That's why we like to have things figured out before anyone arrives.
GPS pins.
Screenshots.
Timelines.
Meeting locations.
Backup instructions.
You don't want the success of your proposal depending on a text saying:
"Where are you?"
when nobody has service.
Summer Proposals in Joshua Tree Require Extra Planning
Summer heat should be taken seriously.
If you're proposing during the warmer months, we'd strongly recommend planning around the cooler parts of the day whenever possible.
For photography, this usually works in our favor anyway.
Early mornings and the period leading into sunset generally provide more comfortable conditions and more flattering light than the middle of the afternoon.
Bring water.
Wear appropriate shoes.
Understand how far you're walking.
And don't underestimate the desert.
Your proposal should feel adventurous.
It shouldn't feel dangerous.
What About Proposal Permits in Joshua Tree?
Rules depend on exactly what you're planning.
A simple proposal with a photographer is different from a formal wedding, elopement, ceremony, large setup, or activity requiring exclusive use of an area.
National park regulations can also change.
That's why we'd always recommend checking the current Joshua Tree National Park rules directly before your proposal rather than relying on an old blog post or social media video.
Planning ahead prevents unnecessary surprises.
You already have one surprise planned.
That's enough.
Who Should Choose Joshua Tree?
We'd lean toward Joshua Tree if you want:
Adventure
Dramatic desert landscapes
Rock formations
Joshua trees
Epic sunset photographs
Stargazing afterward
A destination that feels remote
A more private-feeling experience
Something completely different from a traditional resort proposal
If you're the couple who would rather wear hiking boots than sit beside a resort pool...
Joshua Tree is probably calling your name.
Which Proposal Location Is Best?
Here's how we'd personally break it down.
Best for Luxury
Palm Desert
Resorts make it easy to combine the proposal, hotel, dinner, spa, activities, and engagement session.
Best for Adventure
Joshua Tree
Nothing else in this comparison creates quite the same feeling of being surrounded by the desert.
Best for Restaurants & Nightlife
Palm Springs
If celebrating afterward is a major part of your plan, Palm Springs gives you plenty of options.
Best for Resort Amenities
Palm Desert
If you want everything in one place, this is where Palm Desert shines.
Best for Dramatic Desert Photography
Joshua Tree
The scale of the landscape is difficult to replicate.
Best for Midcentury Style
Palm Springs
If architecture and classic Palm Springs design are part of your vision, this is the obvious choice.
Best for Families
Palm Desert or Palm Springs
Amenities and easier access generally make either one more convenient than planning deep inside a national park.
Best for Couples Who Don't Want to Hike
Palm Desert
You can create beautiful desert and mountain photographs without needing a trail.
Best for Privacy
Joshua Tree
With careful location and timing choices, Joshua Tree can create a much more secluded feeling.
That doesn't mean you'll automatically have the park to yourself.
Popular overlooks and trails can still become busy, especially during peak travel periods.
Best All-Around Desert Vacation
Palm Springs
For couples who want restaurants, architecture, hotels, activities, culture, and desert scenery all in one trip, Palm Springs is hard to beat.
What About the Weather?
All three destinations are desert environments.
That means timing matters.
For most proposal photography, we prefer getting closer to golden hour rather than proposing in harsh midday sunlight.
During summer, this becomes even more important.
Palm Springs and Palm Desert have one major advantage during hotter months:
You can spend much of the day inside a hotel, restaurant, spa, or another air-conditioned environment before stepping outside closer to proposal time.
Joshua Tree doesn't give you that same flexibility once you're inside the park.
That's something we'd strongly consider when choosing between the three.
What If You're Visiting From Out of Town?
Then we'd think beyond the proposal itself.
Ask:
What do we want the entire trip to feel like?
If you want:
Pool + cocktails + restaurants + architecture + proposal
Choose Palm Springs.
If you want:
Resort + spa + golf + dinner + proposal
Choose Palm Desert.
If you want:
Road trip + hiking + sunset + stars + proposal
Choose Joshua Tree.
Sometimes that's a much easier way to make the decision.
Our Pick Isn't Always the Same
We wouldn't recommend Joshua Tree to every couple just because the photographs can be incredible.
And we wouldn't recommend JW Marriott Desert Springs to every couple just because it's convenient.
The proposal should match you.
If your partner hates hiking, don't drag them through the desert because you saw a beautiful proposal photograph online.
If your partner loves national parks and outdoor adventures, proposing at an upscale resort might not feel like your story.
If you both love restaurants, architecture, boutique hotels, pools, and weekend getaways, Palm Springs might make perfect sense.
The best proposal location isn't necessarily the most famous one.
It's the one that feels most like the two of you.
How We Help Couples Decide
When someone contacts us without a location, that's completely normal.
Sometimes the first message is basically:
"I want to propose somewhere around Palm Springs. Help."
That's enough.
We'll start asking questions.
What kind of scenery do you want?
How private should it feel?
Are you bringing family?
Do you want décor?
Are you staying at a resort?
Do you like hiking?
Do you want dinner afterward?
Are you traveling from out of town?
What does your partner enjoy?
From there, we start narrowing things down.
Sometimes we recommend Palm Springs.
Sometimes Palm Desert.
Sometimes Joshua Tree.
And sometimes the conversation leads somewhere completely different.
Planning Support Goes Beyond Photography
For us, surprise proposal photography isn't simply about showing up with cameras.
We can help with:
Location recommendations
Location scouting
Personalized proposal timelines
GPS pins
Proposal cues
Cover stories
Backup plans
Décor
Restaurant recommendations
Restaurant reservations
Coffee shops
Hiking trails
Activities
Custom travel itineraries
Surprise proposal photography
Post-proposal engagement photography
The goal is to remove as much uncertainty as possible before proposal day.
Because once you're standing in front of the person you love...
You shouldn't be thinking about logistics.

So, Palm Springs, Palm Desert or Joshua Tree?
If we had to simplify this entire guide into three sentences:
Choose Palm Springs for style, restaurants, architecture, and an easy desert getaway.
Choose Palm Desert for luxury, resorts, amenities, mountain views, and convenience.
Choose Joshua Tree for adventure, privacy, and unforgettable desert landscapes.
But don't choose based solely on which location looks best online.
Think about your partner.
Think about what you already enjoy doing together.
Think about how you want the entire day to feel.
Then build the proposal around that.
Because years from now, you probably won't remember whether you picked the location that ranked #1 on somebody's list.
You'll remember where you were standing.
What you said.
The look on your partner's face.
And the moment they said:
Yes.

Plan Your Palm Springs Proposal
Quick Guide to Proposing at JW Marriott Desert Springs
Location: 74-855 Country Club Drive, Palm Desert, CA 92260
Best for: Resort proposals, romantic weekends, mountain views, palm trees, water, sunset engagement photos, and couples who want an entire experience surrounding the proposal.
Our favorite proposal area: Flamingo Island
Best time: Late afternoon into golden hour
Parking: Paid self-parking and valet
Restaurants: Multiple dining options are available directly on the property.
Activities: Golf, spa, pools, boat tours, tennis, pickleball, entertainment, dining, and more.
Photography style we'd recommend: Surprise proposal followed by a 30-60 minute engagement session around the resort.
About JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa
JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa is located in Palm Desert, California, in the heart of the Coachella Valley.
The resort has been a desert destination for more than three decades and covers approximately 450 acres.
What makes it particularly interesting for a proposal is the variety.
You aren't limited to one backdrop.
Throughout the property you'll find:
Desert mountain views
Palm trees
Lakes and waterways
Landscaped gardens
Pink flamingos
Resort architecture
Golf-course scenery
Sunset light
The resort also has five outdoor pools, two championship golf courses, Spa Desert Springs, tennis facilities, restaurants, an entertainment zone, and boat tours through the waterways.
That makes JW Marriott Desert Springs especially appealing for destination proposals.
Instead of planning only a 30-minute proposal, you can build an entire day—or weekend—around the experience.
How to Get to JW Marriott Desert Springs
JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa is located at:
74-855 Country Club Drive
Palm Desert, California 92260
If you're flying into the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is the closest major airport. Marriott lists the airport at approximately 12.2 miles from the resort.
If you're driving from the greater Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, or San Diego areas, build additional time into your proposal timeline.
Traffic can change quickly.
For a surprise proposal, we'd much rather see someone arrive 30 minutes early than be watching the sunset from Interstate 10 with an engagement ring in their pocket.
Parking at JW Marriott Desert Springs
One important detail to know beforehand:
Parking is not free.
As of 2026, Marriott currently lists:
Self-parking: $18 hourly or $29 daily
Valet parking: $45 daily
The property also has electric vehicle charging, including Tesla charging stations in the covered self-parking garage.
Parking prices can change, so we'd recommend checking directly with the resort shortly before your visit.
For proposals, we generally recommend building parking time directly into your timeline.
Don't plan to arrive at 6:00 PM for a 6:05 PM proposal.
You still need to park.
Walk through the property.
Possibly meet your photographer.
And get to the proposal location without looking like you're rushing somewhere.
Our Favorite Proposal Location: Flamingo Island
If we had to choose one area for a proposal at JW Marriott Desert Springs, Flamingo Island would be one of our first choices.
It's one of the features that makes this resort feel completely different from other Palm Desert proposal locations.
Flamingo Island is located near the 16th tee of the Palm Course, where the resort's famous pink flamingos live nearby.
From a photography perspective, you can incorporate:
Flamingos
Water
Palm trees
Greenery
Desert scenery
Mountain views
Sunset light
The combination creates photographs that immediately feel like Palm Desert.
It's also completely different from proposing in the open desert at Joshua Tree.
Joshua Tree feels rugged and adventurous.
Flamingo Island feels polished, tropical, and resort-oriented.
Neither is better.
They're simply different experiences.
Other Places to Consider Around the Resort
Flamingo Island isn't your only option.
That's one of JW Marriott Desert Springs' biggest advantages.
Depending on lighting, crowds, resort activity, and what kind of proposal you want, other landscaped areas around the waterways and property may work beautifully.
When we scout a proposal here, we're looking for several things:
Privacy
Can you have a genuine moment without dozens of people walking directly behind you?
Lighting
Where will the sun actually be when you propose?
Background
Are we photographing mountains, water, palm trees, the resort, or a combination?
Approach
Can we naturally get you into position without making your partner suspicious?
Exit route
Where do we go immediately afterward for engagement photos?
Those details matter more than simply choosing the prettiest location on Google Images.
Use the Boat Ride as Part of the Proposal Experience
One of the most unique activities at JW Marriott Desert Springs is its boat experience.
The resort offers boat tours through its waterways, which can become part of the proposal story rather than simply transportation.
For Mohamed and Jenny's proposal, we incorporated the boat ride into their experience.
Our plan allowed us to capture discreet candid photographs before transitioning toward Flamingo Island for the actual proposal.
It made the evening feel like an experience rather than:
"We're walking over here because I secretly need you standing in this exact location."
That's one of our favorite proposal-planning tricks.
When possible, build the proposal into something you're already doing together.
Dinner.
A walk.
A picnic.
A boat ride.
A hike.
A family photoshoot.
The proposal feels much more natural when your partner believes there's another reason for being there.
Give Yourself More Walking Time Than You Think
This is a big one.
JW Marriott Desert Springs is large.
Don't assume that because two locations appear close together on a map you'll reach them immediately.
You'll encounter:
Walkways
Resort buildings
Waterways
Golf areas
Landscaping
Other guests
Comfortable shoes are a good idea if you're planning to explore before or after the proposal.
And if you're wearing dress shoes or heels, consider how much walking you're realistically comfortable doing.
We'd rather design a proposal around your actual experience than create a timeline that looks perfect on paper but feels exhausting in real life.
When Is the Best Time to Propose?
For photography, we generally prefer late afternoon through sunset.
The exact timing changes throughout the year.
In summer, sunsets happen much later.
In winter, you'll need to plan significantly earlier.
Our preference is often to have the actual proposal happen roughly 30-60 minutes before sunset.
That gives you time to enjoy the proposal and still use the remaining golden-hour light for engagement portraits.
However, there's another major factor in Palm Desert:
Heat.
Summer temperatures can be intense.
If you're proposing during the warmer months, avoiding the middle of the afternoon can make the experience significantly more comfortable.
Your proposal should feel romantic.
Not like you're both trying to survive the desert.
Turn the Proposal Into a Full Date
One of the strongest reasons to choose JW Marriott Desert Springs is everything available before and after the proposal.
You don't necessarily need to leave the property.
A proposal day could look something like this:
Afternoon
Check into the resort and relax.
Late afternoon
Enjoy a drink, explore the property, or take a boat ride.
Golden hour
Walk toward your planned proposal location.
Proposal
Ask the question at Flamingo Island or another pre-scouted location.
Immediately afterward
Spend 30-60 minutes taking engagement photographs around the property.
Evening
Celebrate over dinner or drinks at the resort.
That creates an entire experience around the proposal rather than making the proposal the only event of the day.
Restaurants at JW Marriott Desert Springs
Another advantage is having several dining options directly on the property.
Current resort dining includes options such as:
Rockwood Grill
A relaxed American restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
This can work well if you want a traditional sit-down meal before or after the proposal.
Mikado Japanese Steakhouse
One of the resort's more memorable dining experiences, featuring Japanese teppanyaki-style dining and sushi.
This could make a fun celebratory dinner after your partner says yes.
Fisherman's Landing
A seafood-focused option serving dishes including seafood, steaks, sandwiches, soups, salads, and raw-bar selections.
Aquifer65 & JW Sushi Bar
Located around the lobby area, this is an option for Japanese-inspired small plates, sushi, and cocktails.
Blue Star Lounge
A more casual choice for drinks and California-style bites, with an outdoor patio and fire pits.
Starbucks
Useful for the morning after—or for the person proposing who hasn't slept because they've been thinking about the ring all night.
Restaurant availability and hours can change, particularly seasonally, so check directly with the resort and make reservations when appropriate.
Celebrate Afterward Instead of Before
Here's one small proposal tip we've learned over the years:
If you're extremely nervous...
Consider scheduling the big dinner after the proposal.
Some people spend an entire romantic dinner barely eating because they're thinking:
"The ring is in my pocket."
After the proposal?
Completely different energy.
You're engaged.
Everyone can relax.
You can actually enjoy dinner.
And you'll probably spend half of it looking at the first photographs on your phones anyway.
Golf at JW Marriott Desert Springs
If you or your partner enjoy golf, this property becomes even more appealing for a proposal weekend.
Desert Springs Golf Club has two Ted Robinson-designed 18-hole championship courses:
The Palm Course
and
The Valley Course
Both are par-72 courses surrounded by Coachella Valley scenery.
The resort also offers practice facilities, putting greens, golf carts with GPS, rental equipment, instruction, and an 18-hole natural-turf putting course.
This opens up another proposal possibility:
Build golf into the weekend.
Play earlier in the day.
Relax afterward.
Then propose around sunset.
Spa Desert Springs
If your partner loves spa days, you have another built-in cover story.
Spa Desert Springs is a large 38,000-square-foot spa with 47 treatment rooms, a fitness center, spa bistro, couples and VIP suites, and an outdoor saltwater pool.
That makes it easy to turn proposal day into something your partner already believes is simply a relaxing resort getaway.
Spa.
Pool.
Boat ride.
Dinner.
Then suddenly...
A proposal.
Pools, Tennis, Pickleball & Entertainment
There's plenty to do even if golf and spas aren't your thing.
The resort currently offers:
Five outdoor pools
Tennis
Pickleball
Bicycle rentals
Cabanas
Boat tours
Fitness facilities
JW Entertainment Zone
The Entertainment Zone is particularly useful for families and includes arcade games, duckpin bowling, sports simulators, air hockey, and other activities.
That matters if you're planning a proposal involving children.
You can build an entire family day around the resort before transitioning into the proposal.
Should You Include Family?
Absolutely—if that's meaningful to you.
But decide beforehand.
There are two approaches we generally recommend.
Option 1: Private Proposal
Keep the actual proposal between the two of you.
Then have family waiting nearby to celebrate afterward.
Option 2: Family-Involved Proposal
Have family incorporated into the cover story or positioned nearby.
Both can work.
The important thing is coordinating everyone beforehand.
Nothing ruins a surprise faster than Uncle Mike standing 15 feet away holding his phone vertically and staring directly at you.
Should Your Photographer Stay Hidden?
For most surprise proposals here, we'd recommend some level of discretion.
But "hidden photographer" doesn't necessarily mean lying behind a bush.
Sometimes the best disguise is simply looking like another resort guest taking photographs.
For Mohamed and Jenny's proposal, we used a casual interaction.
We approached them and asked if they could take a photograph of us.
Then we offered to return the favor.
That naturally positioned them where we needed them.
No awkward instructions.
No suspicious photographer staring at them.
The proposal simply unfolded.
Example JW Marriott Palm Desert Proposal Timeline
Here's an example of how we'd structure a sunset proposal.
4:30 PM — Photographer arrives
Scout current conditions, lighting, crowds, and proposal location.
5:00 PM — Couple begins resort activities
Relax, grab a drink, explore, or enjoy a boat ride.
6:00 PM — Photographer moves into position
Final location check and communication.
6:15 PM — Couple begins walking toward proposal location
Follow the pre-planned route.
6:30 PM — Proposal
Arrive at Flamingo Island.
Give your speech.
Get down on one knee.
Ask:
"Will you marry me?"
6:35 PM — Celebrate
Take a few minutes together.
Don't immediately start posing.
Enjoy what just happened.
6:45-7:15 PM — Engagement photos
Walk around Flamingo Island, waterways, palm trees, and nearby resort scenery while chasing the remaining golden-hour light.
7:30 PM — Dinner
Celebrate your first dinner as an engaged couple.
Your exact timeline should always be built around the sunset time for your proposal date.
What We'd Do Differently After Photographing Here
First-hand experience teaches you things research can't.
Our biggest lesson?
Know your boat stop.
During Mohamed and Jenny's proposal, Stephanie and I got off at the wrong location.
That resulted in two photographers sprinting through JW Marriott Desert Springs—and at one point hopping a fence—to reach Flamingo Island before our couple.
We made it.
The proposal happened exactly as it needed to.
Jenny never knew anything had gone wrong.
But that's precisely why we build extra time into proposal timelines.
Things happen.
A boat stops somewhere unexpected.
Parking takes longer.
Traffic builds.
Someone needs to use the restroom.
Your partner suddenly wants another drink.
Good planning doesn't mean everything happens perfectly.
Good planning means you're prepared when it doesn't.
Our Biggest Tips for Proposing at JW Marriott Desert Springs
Scout your proposal location beforehand.
This property is too large to improvise confidently at the last second.
Pay attention to sunset.
Build your timeline backward from the best light.
Account for Palm Desert heat.
Especially during summer.
Wear comfortable shoes.
You'll probably walk more than expected.
Budget for parking.
Self-parking and valet are paid.
Make dinner reservations beforehand.
You don't want to finish an incredible proposal and spend the next hour trying to find somewhere to eat.
Have a backup proposal location.
Resort activity, events, crowds, or other conditions could affect your first choice.
Hire someone who understands surprise proposals.
The photography matters.
But so do timing, positioning, communication, scouting, and the ability to adapt when something changes.
Is JW Marriott Desert Springs Worth It for a Proposal?
For the right couple, absolutely.
We particularly recommend it for someone looking for a proposal that feels:
Romantic
Upscale
Scenic
Easy to turn into a weekend getaway
Different from a traditional desert proposal
The biggest advantage is variety.
You can have mountain views without hiking into the wilderness.
Water without driving to the coast.
Palm trees without leaving Palm Desert.
Flamingos without flying somewhere tropical.
Dinner without leaving the property.
And plenty of beautiful locations for engagement photographs immediately after the proposal.

Final Thoughts
JW Marriott Desert Springs isn't just a place to take proposal photographs.
That's what makes it interesting.
You can build an entire experience here.
Spend the afternoon by the pool.
Take a boat ride.
Walk among the palm trees.
Propose beside Flamingo Island.
Chase the sunset for engagement photographs.
Then sit down for dinner and celebrate.
And if everything goes according to plan?
Amazing.
If it doesn't?
Hopefully you've planned enough that your partner never notices.
Because after all the scouting, timelines, GPS pins, phone calls, reservations, and backup plans, everything ultimately comes down to a few seconds.
You look at the person you love.
Get down on one knee.
And ask:
"Will you marry me?"
Everything else is simply helping you get there.
