3,200 Miles, 16 Love Stories & Our First No-Show | What August Taught Us About Running Last Minute Photoshoot

August was a month.

Not necessarily because we photographed more couples than we ever have or because everything went perfectly.

Actually, quite the opposite.

We drove roughly 3,200 miles. We photographed 16 bookings across Southern California. We had clients forget their proposal cues. We changed locations and completely rewrote plans only hours before someone was supposed to get down on one knee.

At one point, we even had to jump a fence because we didn't have the key we needed to get into position for a proposal.

And for the first time since starting Last Minute Photoshoot, we had a client simply never show up.

But August also reminded us why we love doing this.

Behind every proposal photo you see on our website is a much bigger story involving hours of driving, scouting locations, checking weather, building timelines, coordinating with family members, creating cover stories, answering late-night messages, editing photos and figuring things out when the original plan suddenly stops working.

This is what August 2026 actually looked like behind the scenes at Last Minute Photoshoot.

3,200 Miles Later, We'd Do It All Over Again.
16 love stories, countless sunsets, last-minute pivots, long drives, one no-show—and a whole lot of people trusting us with moments they only get once. August reminded us why we built Last Minute Photoshoot in the first place. Not just to take beautiful photos, but to show up when it matters. To scout the location, build the timeline, change the plan when something goes wrong, answer the last-minute text, drive the extra miles, and be there when someone finally gets down on one knee.

Plus additional inquiries through email, text messages and direct communication.

Our website also received roughly 9,000 visits during August, up more than 200% month over month.

About 60% of our August bookings were last-minute, while approximately 40% had been booked earlier in June or July.

And our shoots were overwhelmingly what Last Minute Photoshoot has become known for:

Approximately 90% surprise proposals

Approximately 5% elopements

Approximately 5% courthouse weddings

Those bookings took us all over Southern California.

San Diego.

Los Angeles.

Laguna Beach.

Newport Beach.

Idyllwild.

Joshua Tree.

Palm Desert.

Riverside.

Lake Arrowhead.

For many of our shoots, we're driving somewhere around 100 miles each way.

By the end of August, we estimate that we had put roughly 3,200 miles on the road.

But mileage doesn't really tell the whole story.

60% of Our Bookings Were Last-Minute

There's a reason we called this business Last Minute Photoshoot.

Approximately 60% of the couples we photographed in August booked us relatively last-minute.

Some people plan their proposal months in advance.

Others contact us with a date that's coming up very quickly and essentially say:

"I want to propose. I just don't know where or how yet."

That's where a huge part of our job begins.

Beach or cliffs?

Private or somewhere iconic?

Sunset or morning?

Flowers or no setup?

Will family be there?

Where are we going to stand?

How do we keep the photographer discreet?

What's the cover story?

Where exactly should you get down on one knee?

What's the cue?

Where do we go afterward for engagement photos?

And what happens if something goes wrong?

By proposal day, we want as much of that figured out as possible.

Because the person proposing already has enough going through their head.

Our goal is for them to show up, enjoy the moment and ask one question:

Will you marry me?

We'll worry about the rest.

Sometimes the Entire Plan Changes Hours Before the Proposal

August reminded us again that a proposal timeline is really just the best version of the plan until real life gets involved.

We had multiple proposals this month where we had to pivot at the last minute.

In one case, the location and plan changed within the final few hours before the proposal.

That means you're no longer just changing where someone gets down on one knee.

You're figuring out new parking.

New lighting.

A new photographer position.

A new walking route.

A new cue.

A new background.

A new cover story.

And sometimes you're doing all of that while already driving toward the shoot.

That's probably one of the biggest things we've learned from specializing in surprise proposals:

You can't become so attached to Plan A that you aren't ready to create Plan B.

The couple doesn't need to know everything happening behind the scenes.

They just need the moment to work.

Then There Was the Time We Had to Jump a Fence

One of our favorite August stories happened at JW Marriott Desert Springs in Palm Desert.

We had carefully planned a surprise proposal on Flamingo Island.

The resort has waterways and a boat that travels through the property, so part of the plan involved getting ourselves into position before our couple arrived.

Simple enough.

Until we got off at the wrong boat stop.

Suddenly, a carefully planned proposal became a race against the clock.

We needed to get to Flamingo Island before our client.

There wasn't time to casually figure it out.

So we ran.

And because we didn't have the key we needed to access one area, at one point we ended up hopping a fence so we could get into position and prepare before the couple arrived.

Not exactly part of the original proposal timeline.

But we made it.

By the time Mohamed and Jenny arrived, none of that mattered.

Mohamed proposed to Jenny on Flamingo Island.

She said yes.

And we spent the next part of the evening photographing them in the golden Palm Desert light.

That's the part they needed to experience.

The chaos beforehand?

That's our problem. :)

Sometimes Clients Forget the Cue

This happened more than once in August.

And we completely understand why.

Imagine spending weeks planning one of the biggest moments of your life.

You're walking toward the proposal spot.

Your heart is racing.

You're trying to remember where to stand.

You're making sure your partner doesn't suspect anything.

You're thinking about what you're going to say.

And somewhere in all of that you're also supposed to remember:

"Oh yeah, I'm supposed to give the photographers a thumbs-up."

Sometimes that cue disappears completely.

At Windansea Beach, for example, we had planned a thumbs-up cue with Stone before he proposed to Samantha.

Stone had even met us before the proposal for a walkthrough so we could map everything out.

We hid the flowers and wine.

We knew where he was going to propose.

We knew where we needed to be.

There was just one problem.

When the moment arrived, Stone forgot the thumbs-up.

But we could read what was happening.

His body language changed.

The moment was coming.

So we started shooting.

Samantha said yes.

And everything worked.

It's also one of the reasons we occasionally recreate a few proposal photographs afterward.

The first proposal is real.

That's the moment.

We don't interrupt it.

We don't ask you to turn slightly toward better light while you're asking someone to marry you.

We capture it exactly as it happens.

Afterward, once everyone can breathe again, we'll sometimes do a quick reshoot to get another angle, cleaner composition or closer photograph.

So yes, if you forget your cue, we'll probably tease you about it afterward.

But we've got you. :)

And Then We Had Our First No-Show

This one was new for us.

We had planned a sunset picnic proposal at the La Jolla Gliderport.

The plan was ready.

We arrived.

We prepared the picnic.

We waited.

And waited.

We called.

We texted.

Nothing.

Sunset came and went.

Eventually, around 8:00 PM, we had to accept that nobody was coming and begin breaking everything down.

It was our first true proposal no-show.

Running a business teaches you things that no photography tutorial ever will.

This was one of them.

There are costs involved before we ever press the shutter button.

There's driving.

Planning.

Communication.

Scouting.

Setup.

Time blocked off that could have gone to another couple.

And when decor is involved, there's even more preparation before we leave home.

It forced us to think more seriously about our policies, communication and how we protect the time that goes into creating these experiences.

But we also don't want one bad experience to change the way we treat everyone else.

The overwhelming majority of our clients are incredibly communicative, appreciative and excited.

One no-show doesn't erase that.

It just becomes another lesson.

The Photograph Is Actually a Small Part of the Job

This is probably the biggest thing August reinforced for us.

People understandably see the finished photographs.

They don't see everything around them.

They don't see us leaving home hours early because Southern California traffic can turn a two-hour drive into something completely different.

They don't see the location scouting.

The screenshots.

The GPS pins.

The tide checks.

The sunset calculations.

The weather forecasts.

The parking research.

The family group chats.

The calls with hotel staff.

The cover stories.

The timelines.

The "I'm here, where are you?" texts.

The flowers sitting in our car.

The frantic last-minute location changes.

Or us sitting at our computers late at night editing photographs from the proposal we just drove several hours home from.

And that's okay.

They're not supposed to see all of it.

That's part of what they're trusting us to handle.

This Business Is a Labor of Love

We use that phrase a lot, but August made us think about what it actually means.

Last Minute Photoshoot really is a labor of love.

We love capturing love stories.

But there are very long hours behind them.

Sometimes the photography is the easiest part.

There's the driving.

The planning.

The logistics.

The scouting.

The communication.

The setups.

The breakdowns.

The backups.

And then there are the late nights when the shoot is finished, we've finally made it home, and we're still sitting at the computer working through photographs because we know there's a couple refreshing their phone hoping to see that moment again.

Is it exhausting sometimes?

Absolutely.

Is it worth it?

Absolutely.

Because every client who hires us is trusting us with something they can't recreate.

You only get one real first reaction.

One moment when your partner realizes what's happening.

One first "yes."

And we never want to forget how much trust that requires.

What 16 Bookings Taught Us

If we had to summarize August into a few lessons, these would probably be the biggest ones.

Always have another plan.

Locations change. Weather changes. Crowds change. Timelines change. The ability to pivot matters just as much as creating the original plan.

Arrive earlier than you think you need to.

That extra time has saved us more times than we can count.

A proposal cue is helpful. Reading the moment is more important.

People forget cues. We expect that now.

Planning is part of the photography.

Knowing where the light will be, where someone should kneel and where we can position ourselves changes the photographs before the camera ever comes out.

Last-minute doesn't have to mean unplanned.

Some of our most carefully coordinated proposals have come together in only a few days.

Not everything will go perfectly.

Sometimes you're going to miss the boat stop.

Sometimes you're going to jump a fence.

Sometimes the client is going to forget the cue.

Sometimes Plan A disappears hours before the proposal.

And apparently, sometimes nobody shows up at all.

You figure it out.

You learn.

And you get better.

More Than 57 People Trusted Us Enough to Reach Out

We received 44 inquiries directly through our website in August.

We know of at least three more from TikTok and two from Instagram, plus inquiries that arrived through email, text messages and other direct channels.

Based on everything we tracked, we estimate somewhere around 57–64 potential clients reached out to Last Minute Photoshoot during August.

Sixteen ultimately booked with us.

But there was something else happening behind that number that we're equally grateful for.

There were several couples we simply couldn't help because their dates were already booked.

And when someone is planning a surprise proposal—especially a last-minute one—telling them we're unavailable doesn't mean we want to leave them on their own.

Whenever we could, we reached out to photographers and vendors within our network who we trusted and tried to connect those couples with someone who could still help make their plans happen.

That's something we've come to appreciate more and more as our business has grown.

Yes, we're photographers, and technically we're all running our own businesses.

But there's also a community of photographers, planners, venues and other vendors behind so many of these moments.

We share information.

We ask each other questions.

We send referrals.

We help when someone's already booked.

And sometimes another photographer steps in and takes care of a couple we genuinely wished we could have photographed ourselves.

August was messy.

It was exciting.

It was San Diego, Los Angeles, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Idyllwild, Joshua Tree, Palm Desert, Riverside and Lake Arrowhead.

It was 16 bookings.

It was thousands of photographs.

It was forgotten cues.

Changed locations.

A wrong boat stop.

A fence.

Our first no-show.

And a whole lot of "yes."

Most importantly, it was another month where people trusted us to be there for one of the biggest moments of their lives.

One of our favorite examples was a proposal originally planned for Griffith Observatory.

As the proposal date approached, several active wildfires created smoky skies and poor air quality across Los Angeles.

Rather than forcing the original location, we worked with the couple to move everything to The Huntington Library.

Instead of smoky skyline views, they enjoyed clear skies, beautiful gardens, and one of our favorite proposal stories to date.

The best proposal photographers don't just hope everything goes according to plan.

They prepare for the possibility that it won't.

6. Read Reviews Carefully

Don't simply count five-star reviews.

Read them.

Look for words like:

• Planning

• Communication

• Flexible

• Organized

• Professional

• Calm

• Helpful

• Friendly

Those qualities often tell you much more than photography alone.

Great photographs are important.

A great experience is unforgettable.

7. Personality Matters More Than You Think

You'll likely spend anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours with your proposal photographer.

That time should feel comfortable.

Natural.

Relaxed.

One of the biggest compliments we receive isn't actually about our photos.

It's when couples tell us,

"It felt like spending time with friends."

That's always been our goal.

The more comfortable you feel, the more genuine your photographs become.

Proposal day is emotional enough.

Your photographer should make you feel more relaxed—not more nervous.

8. Understand the Photo Delivery Process

Before booking, make sure you understand exactly what you'll receive after your proposal.

Questions worth asking include:

• When will we receive our unedited photos?

• When do sneak peeks arrive?

• How long does the edited gallery take?

• Are all the original images included?

• How are photos delivered?

• Can additional edits be purchased later?

For our couples, we typically deliver the full set of unedited images within 24 to 48 hours so they can immediately relive the experience and begin choosing their favorites.

Once selections are made, edited galleries are generally delivered within one week, depending on the season and current editing queue.

We believe one of the hardest parts after proposing is waiting to relive it.

That's why we work hard to get images back as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality.

9. Can They Handle Last-Minute Proposals?

Not every proposal has months of planning.

Sometimes life happens.

Travel gets rescheduled.

Weather changes.

Photographers cancel.

Family emergencies come up.

Or maybe you've finally decided you simply don't want to wait any longer.

Jorge and Michelle's surprise proposal at La Jolla Gliderport was one of those stories.

Originally, Jorge had a completely different proposal planned.

Unfortunately, just days before he planned to ask one of the biggest questions of his life, an unexpected emergency forced him to cancel everything.

With his original plans no longer possible, he wasn't ready to give up on the proposal.

Instead, on July 10, he gave us a call asking if we had any availability for July 12.

His goal was simple.

He wanted to create an unforgettable surprise proposal for Michelle despite everything that had changed.

The challenge?

We had less than 48 hours to completely reimagine the experience.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Just Two Days

When Jorge first reached out, we were already booked earlier that afternoon photographing another surprise proposal at Balboa Park.

Fortunately, our evening was still available.

We suggested planning for a sunset proposal, giving us enough time to travel across San Diego and create the experience he envisioned.

Although the timeline was short, the biggest challenge wasn't the time—it was rebuilding a proposal after Jorge's original plans unexpectedly fell through.

Together, we focused on creating a new experience that felt intentional rather than rushed.

As we talked through ideas, we discussed several proposal locations before narrowing everything down to one of our favorite places in Southern California:

La Jolla Gliderport.

Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, La Jolla Gliderport is one of San Diego's most iconic proposal locations. We talked about Michelle.

Earlier that afternoon, Steph and I were already photographing another surprise proposal at Balboa Park.

We wrapped up around 5:10 PM, packed our gear, and immediately headed toward La Jolla.

Fortunately, we'd already built enough travel time into our schedule.

Planning isn't just about the proposal itself.

It's about making sure every piece of the day flows smoothly.

By the time we arrived at La Jolla Gliderport, golden hour was beginning.

We parked in the far dirt parking lot and immediately started unloading equipment.

The "Marry Me" sign.

Rose petals.

Photography gear.

Trip after trip back to the car.

By the end of setup, we had definitely earned our steps for the day.

Every trip was worth it.

As the sun slowly lowered toward the Pacific Ocean, everything finally came together.

By 7:00 PM, the setup was complete.

We sent Jorge a message letting him know we were ready.

Guiding Jorge to the Proposal Location

Because it was Jorge's first time proposing at La Jolla Gliderport, we didn't want him worrying about finding the exact location.

I met him near the beginning of the trail so there wouldn't be any confusion.

After making visual contact, I quietly guided him closer to the proposal site before stepping aside.

From there, the moment belonged entirely to them.

The Moment Michelle Said Yes

Jorge reached for Michelle's hand as they followed the trail lined with rose petals.

Waiting ahead was the floral arch overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The evening sky was beginning to glow with warm golden light while colorful paragliders floated quietly overhead.

Privacy

If privacy is your highest priority, we'd recommend The Huntington Library.

Its 130-acre property offers countless secluded pathways, gardens, benches, and hidden corners where proposals can feel incredibly intimate.

Griffith Observatory is certainly possible, but because it's one of Los Angeles' most visited attractions, privacy requires more planning.

Fortunately, that's something we help every couple navigate.

Sometimes waiting five minutes or walking another hundred feet completely changes the experience.

The Huntington Library

The Huntington spans more than 130 acres.

You'll spend much of your visit walking between gardens, climbing occasional stairs, navigating gentle inclines, and exploring pathways connecting one incredible landscape to another.

Comfortable shoes are highly recommended for both.

Parking

Parking is one of the biggest differences between these locations.

Griffith Observatory

Parking requires more strategy.

The closest parking lots fill quickly around sunset.

Los Angeles traffic can also add significant travel time, particularly on weekends and holidays.

We recommend arriving 60 to 90 minutes before sunset.

The Huntington Library

Parking is considerably easier.

Visitor parking is included with admission, and although weekends can become busy, arriving early usually provides a smooth experience.

If convenience is important, Huntington has the advantage.

Cost

One advantage Griffith Observatory has is cost.

Admission to the Observatory and surrounding grounds is free.

You'll generally only pay for parking if you choose to park near the Observatory.

The Huntington Library requires admission tickets, but those tickets include access to more than 130 acres of botanical gardens, museums, art galleries, and historic collections.

If you're planning to spend several hours exploring after the proposal, Huntington offers exceptional value.

Families

Planning to include children or parents?

Both locations work wonderfully.

However, we've found The Huntington often provides a smoother experience.

The larger property allows families to spread out naturally, and one of our favorite proposal strategies—photographing under the guise of a family photo session—fits perfectly within the gardens.

One of our favorite examples was Joseph and Maryfel's proposal, where their children unknowingly became part of one of the most memorable moments of the day.

Flexibility Matters

One thing we've learned after photographing proposals throughout Southern California is this:

Sometimes the best proposal isn't the one originally planned.

As the date approached, several active wildfires across Los Angeles County created smoky skies and air quality advisories.

If you'd like to visit the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, separate tickets are available for purchase.

Parking

Parking is one of the biggest things couples underestimate when planning a proposal here.

The Observatory offers paid parking close to the entrance, but spaces fill quickly, especially on weekends, holidays, and around sunset.

Additional free parking can often be found farther down the hill inside Griffith Park, although it requires a longer uphill walk to the Observatory.

If you're proposing during sunset, we recommend arriving 60–90 minutes early.

This gives you plenty of time to park, walk to the Observatory, meet your photographer, and settle your nerves before the proposal.

The proposal moved from Griffith Observatory to The Huntington Library, proving that flexibility, preparation, and the right team can turn an unexpected change into the perfect beginning. Plan Your Los Angeles Proposal

It All Started with a Message

On May 6, Joseph reached out to us asking if we were available to photograph his surprise proposal at Griffith Observatory on June 24.

We replied immediately, letting him know we were available while asking a few questions to better understand his vision.

One thing stood out immediately.

He wanted his children to be part of one of the biggest moments of his life.

Rather than simply photographing the proposal, Joseph wanted to create a memory his entire family could look back on for years to come.

We loved the idea.

Sometimes Plans Change—And That's Okay

As planning continued, life happened.

Joseph's timeline shifted, and instead of proposing in late June, he decided to move everything up to May 24, right in the middle of Memorial Day weekend.

To say we were busy would be an understatement.

Leading into Memorial Day weekend, Stephanie and I already had four surprise proposals scheduled, with several more sessions immediately afterward.

We always joke with each other...

"Love doesn't stop for anyone."

Behind every proposal is a lot more than simply showing up with cameras.

Every proposal we photograph includes planning, timeline creation, scouting, communication, backup plans, GPS pins, proposal cues, and logistics. During busy holiday weekends, those plans become even more important as we're often traveling across Southern California on very little sleep while making sure every couple still receives the same experience we'd want if it were our own proposal.

No matter how busy the calendar gets, one thing never changes.

Every couple deserves our full attention.

Why We Moved the Proposal

Originally, Joseph planned to propose at Griffith Observatory.

As Memorial Day weekend approached, several wildfires were active throughout Los Angeles County, creating smoky skies and triggering air quality advisories across parts of the region.

Although Griffith Observatory remained an incredible location, we didn't feel those conditions would create the best experience for Joseph and his family.

Rather than hoping conditions improved, we began discussing alternatives.

That's when we recommended The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in nearby San Marino.

Being farther inland, Huntington offered noticeably clearer skies, better air quality, and a more comfortable environment for spending several hours outdoors with the kids.

Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we could have made.

One thing we always tell our couples is this:

Your proposal doesn't have to go exactly according to the original plan.

One thing many first-time visitors don't realize is that Lacy Park's parking lot is relatively small.

On weekdays, finding a space is usually much easier.

However, weekends can become busy with families, birthday celebrations, sports activities, and community events.

If the main parking lot fills up, street parking is available along the surrounding residential streets, with only a short walk into the park.

Months of heavy rain had caused noticeable cracks along the cliff edge, and portions of the area were considered unstable.

Fortunately, only a short walk away we found another overlook that offered nearly the same iconic Pacific Ocean backdrop while providing a much safer location.
