That's exactly what happened with Joseph and Maryfel.
The proposal moved from Griffith Observatory to The Huntington Library, proving that flexibility, preparation, and the right team can turn an unexpected change into the perfect beginning. Plan Your Los Angeles Proposal
It All Started with a Message
On May 6, Joseph reached out to us asking if we were available to photograph his surprise proposal at Griffith Observatory on June 24.
We replied immediately, letting him know we were available while asking a few questions to better understand his vision.
One thing stood out immediately.
He wanted his children to be part of one of the biggest moments of his life.
Rather than simply photographing the proposal, Joseph wanted to create a memory his entire family could look back on for years to come.
We loved the idea.
Sometimes Plans Change—And That's Okay
As planning continued, life happened.
Joseph's timeline shifted, and instead of proposing in late June, he decided to move everything up to May 24, right in the middle of Memorial Day weekend.
To say we were busy would be an understatement.
Leading into Memorial Day weekend, Stephanie and I already had four surprise proposals scheduled, with several more sessions immediately afterward.
We always joke with each other...
"Love doesn't stop for anyone."
Behind every proposal is a lot more than simply showing up with cameras.
Every proposal we photograph includes planning, timeline creation, scouting, communication, backup plans, GPS pins, proposal cues, and logistics. During busy holiday weekends, those plans become even more important as we're often traveling across Southern California on very little sleep while making sure every couple still receives the same experience we'd want if it were our own proposal.
No matter how busy the calendar gets, one thing never changes.
Every couple deserves our full attention.
Why We Moved the Proposal
Originally, Joseph planned to propose at Griffith Observatory.
As Memorial Day weekend approached, several wildfires were active throughout Los Angeles County, creating smoky skies and triggering air quality advisories across parts of the region.
Although Griffith Observatory remained an incredible location, we didn't feel those conditions would create the best experience for Joseph and his family.
Rather than hoping conditions improved, we began discussing alternatives.
That's when we recommended The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in nearby San Marino.
Being farther inland, Huntington offered noticeably clearer skies, better air quality, and a more comfortable environment for spending several hours outdoors with the kids.
Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we could have made.
One thing we always tell our couples is this:
Your proposal doesn't have to go exactly according to the original plan.
Sometimes the unexpected pivot becomes one of the best parts of your story.
Whether it's weather, wildfires, crowds, or something completely unexpected, being flexible often leads to an even better experience.

Why Huntington Library Is One of Southern California's Best Proposal Locations
Located in San Marino near Pasadena, The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens spans more than 130 acres and is one of Southern California's most iconic destinations.
Originally established by railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington, the property combines world-renowned botanical gardens, historic architecture, art collections, and research libraries into one incredible destination.
For couples, however, it's much more than a museum.
It's one of the most romantic places in Los Angeles County.
Within a single visit, you can explore:

After discussing several ideas with Joseph, we ultimately decided the Rose Garden would become the proposal location.
Home to thousands of roses representing hundreds of varieties, the Huntington Rose Garden is one of the property's most recognizable and romantic spaces.
Long pathways weave through vibrant blooms while mature trees, manicured hedges, and elegant landscaping create a timeless atmosphere that feels both intimate and grand.
Whether you're planning a surprise proposal, engagement session, or simply visiting during bloom season, it's one of the most beautiful gardens in Southern California.
Going Undercover
To preserve the surprise, we met Joseph and his family near the front entrance.
Our cover story?
We were simply photographing a family session.
It's one of our favorite ways to photograph proposals.
A family photo session feels completely natural.
Everyone relaxes.
Nobody questions why a photographer is there.
Most importantly...
Your partner never suspects what's about to happen.
With introductions made, we began walking through the gardens together.
Exploring Huntington Together
Our route took us through several incredible sections of the property.
The Palm Garden.
The Jungle Garden.
Beautiful walking paths.
Towering palms.
Lush greenery.
Along the way we captured genuine family moments, playful interactions with the kids, and natural candid photographs.

Prepare to walk.
The property is massive.
There's beauty around every corner.
Without a plan, it's incredibly easy to get distracted because every garden feels like it deserves its own photo session.
That's one reason we always create personalized timelines beforehand.
Having a clear plan allowed Joseph and his family to enjoy the experience while still arriving at the Rose Garden exactly when the lighting was at its best.
The Moment Everything Came Together
Once we reached the Rose Garden, we quietly searched for the perfect location.
Good light.
Beautiful background.
Minimal foot traffic.
Everything lined up perfectly.
I looked over at Joseph.
Gave him a subtle signal.
This was the spot.
We framed the entire family together for what appeared to be another family portrait.
Then we gave everyone one simple direction.
"Everyone look behind you and point."
As everyone turned around, Joseph quietly stepped backward.
The children naturally moved aside.
When Maryfel turned back around...
Joseph was already on one knee.
"Will you marry me?"
She smiled.
She said yes.
And just like that...
Everything they had been planning for weeks became one unforgettable moment.
The Moments After the Proposal
One of our favorite parts of every proposal happens immediately afterward.
The hugs.
The laughter.
The happy tears.
The excitement.
We always give couples a few quiet moments together while documenting everything naturally from a distance.

Celebrating Around the Gardens
After congratulating the newly engaged couple, we spent the next hour exploring Huntington together.
The Rose Garden.
Historic walkways.
Elegant architecture.
Lush landscapes.
Towering trees.
Every few minutes the scenery completely changed, allowing us to create a gallery with incredible variety without ever leaving the property.
It's one of the many reasons Huntington continues to be one of our favorite proposal and engagement locations in Southern California.
