Traveling from Florida, David booked our Golden Yes Proposal Package for his romantic surprise proposal to Leila at Point Flora inside Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa. Last Minute Photoshoot coordinated the location, timing and discreet photography, capturing the beautiful moment David knelt down and placed the engagement ring on Leila's finger in the resort's lush gardens.
Real Proposal Story | August 2026 | Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, San Diego, California
Some of our favorite surprise proposal stories don't begin with a client reaching out through our website.
Sometimes they begin with a message from someone who already knows and trusts our work.
And this particular story meant a little more to us.
Back in August 2026, the team at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa reached out about a guest traveling from Florida who wanted to propose to his girlfriend during their stay in La Jolla.
They asked if they could connect us.
Of course!
What made this introduction especially meaningful was that this would be our fourth referral from Estancia La Jolla.
Over the past year, Stephanie and I have built a wonderful working relationship with the resort's team. We've photographed proposals on the property, helped coordinate decorations and worked together to create memorable experiences for their guests.
For a small husband-and-wife photography business, becoming a trusted photography vendor means the world to us.
It's something we never take for granted.
And this proposal would become another reminder of why preparation, flexibility and teamwork matter so much.
David had a vision for his proposal to Leila. A meaningful wish, a beautiful setting, and one unforgettable question. But sometimes, the path to "yes" takes an unexpected turn. From romantic garden settings like Estancia La Jolla to breathtaking oceanfront cliffs and hidden coastal gems, La Jolla offers countless ways to create a proposal that feels uniquely yours. The secret isn't just choosing a beautiful location. It's knowing how to bring everything together, even when plans change.
At Last Minute Photoshoot, we're more than photographers. We help coordinate your surprise, scout locations, plan around lighting and timing, create believable cover stories, and provide exact GPS pins so you know where to go and what to expect.
Whether you're planning months ahead, visiting San Diego from out of town, or suddenly need to change your original plans, we'll help you create a thoughtful, stress-free proposal while discreetly capturing every genuine reaction.
Because sometimes the most unforgettable love stories aren't the ones that go exactly as planned. They're the ones where everything comes together when it matters most.
You bring the ring and the wish. We'll help turn it into an unforgettable "yes."
Plan Your La Jolla Surprise Proposal
A Florida Guest Planning a Surprise Proposal in La Jolla
After the introduction, we connected with David.
He and his girlfriend, Leila, were traveling from Florida and staying at Estancia La Jolla toward the end of August.
David wanted to propose at the resort around sunset.
He already knew the most important part.
He wanted to ask Leila to marry him.
Our job was to help figure out everything else.
We discussed the resort grounds, potential proposal locations, timing, the walking route and how we could photograph the moment without making the surprise obvious.
Since we'd photographed proposals and helped coordinate decorations at Estancia before, we were familiar with several areas of the property.
And one location immediately came to mind.
Point Flora.
Why We Recommended Point Flora at Estancia La Jolla
Point Flora is one of our favorite locations for surprise proposals at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa.
Tucked within the resort's beautifully landscaped gardens, it offers a romantic setting surrounded by greenery and flowers.
Unlike a busy public beach or coastal overlook, Point Flora provides a different kind of proposal experience.
It feels intimate.
Relaxed.
And naturally romantic.
We'd photographed proposals and coordinated floral decorations there before, so we knew the location could work beautifully for David's vision.
We suggested Point Flora as the place where he would ask Leila to marry him.
But we wanted to add one more meaningful detail before they reached the proposal spot.
The Wishing Tree.
The Wishing Tree: A Personal Touch Before the Proposal
One of the features we love about Estancia La Jolla is its Wishing Tree.
Guests can leave written wishes and messages on tags hanging from the tree.
It's a simple tradition, but it can become something incredibly meaningful during a surprise proposal.
We'd incorporated the Wishing Tree into previous proposal plans, and it had worked beautifully.
So we suggested using it again.
Here's how we envisioned the experience.
David and Leila would take a casual walk through the resort gardens.
Along the way, they'd stop at the Wishing Tree.
A special note would be waiting for Leila.
She'd read it.
Then David would guide her toward Point Flora, where he'd get down on one knee.
We'd already be nearby, discreetly positioned to photograph and record everything.
Sounds simple enough, right?
Haha.
Well, if there's one thing we've learned from photographing surprise proposals throughout Southern California, it's that even the simplest plans can change.
And ours was about to.
Proposal Day Started With an Engagement Photoshoot in Laguna Beach
On the day of David and Leila's proposal, Stephanie and I already had an engagement session scheduled in Laguna Beach.
Our original plan was straightforward.
Finish the engagement photoshoot, pack our equipment, head south to La Jolla and arrive at Estancia with enough time to check in with the resort team.
We'd then review the walking route, check the lighting, position ourselves and wait for David and Leila.
Everything was looking good.
Until David sent us a message.
Just as we were wrapping up our Laguna Beach session, he let us know that some of his plans had changed.
Could we move the proposal earlier?
Well, that definitely made things interesting!
We were still in Orange County, and Estancia La Jolla was quite a drive away.
But we understood.
David was traveling from Florida, coordinating a surprise proposal during his vacation, and trying to make everything work around his schedule.
Plans change.
Reservations shift.
Timelines move.
And sometimes you need to adjust.
We told David we'd do everything we could to make the earlier time happen.
Racing 61 Miles From Laguna Beach to La Jolla
We won't pretend we had a leisurely afternoon.
We had approximately 61 miles to drive from our photoshoot location in Laguna Beach to Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, and with David requesting an earlier proposal time, things were getting a little tight!
As soon as we wrapped up our engagement session, Steph and I packed our gear, jumped on the highway and headed south toward La Jolla.
Our priority was getting there safely, checking in with the Estancia team and preparing everything before David and Leila arrived.
Fortunately, we made it with just enough time.
We connected with the hotel team, reviewed the proposal route from the Wishing Tree to Point Flora, checked our camera positions and completed a quick dry run.
And just as we finished walking through the plan, we looked up.
There they were.
David and Leila were already approaching in the distance.
Talk about perfect timing!
We immediately switched into discreet photographer mode, acted like ordinary resort guests and waited for them to pass before quietly following behind to capture their surprise proposal.
Staying Discreet Until the Right Moment
One of the most important parts of surprise proposal photography is knowing when to stay out of sight.
If we'd immediately raised our cameras as David and Leila approached, the surprise might have been ruined.
Instead, we stayed relaxed and played our part.
We let them walk past us.
We didn't draw attention to ourselves.
Once they were ahead of us, we slowly followed from behind, keeping enough distance to photograph and record the moment without interrupting it.
This is something we coordinate carefully with our clients.
We want the proposal to feel natural.
The couple should be focused on each other, not wondering why two photographers are following them through the resort.
And that's exactly how David and Leila's experience unfolded.
The Wishing Tree Note That Gave Everything Away
David and Leila reached the Wishing Tree just as we'd planned.
Leila stopped.
She found the note.
And began reading.
Then came that wonderful moment when everything started to click.
She realized what was happening.
What had seemed like a simple walk through the resort gardens was becoming something much bigger.
David guided her toward Point Flora.
Steph and I continued photographing and recording as the moment unfolded.
We had a clear view of everything.
And then, surrounded by Estancia's beautiful gardens, David asked Leila to marry him.
She said yes!
Just like that, the planning, hotel coordination, 61-mile drive from Laguna Beach and last-minute timeline adjustment all became part of a beautiful memory.
And we had front-row seats to capture it.
A Team Effort Behind One Beautiful Moment
One thing we want to emphasize about David and Leila's proposal is that this wasn't something Stephanie and I accomplished alone.
The team at Estancia La Jolla played an important role from the beginning.
They recognized that David needed help planning a proposal.
They connected him with photographers they trusted.
And they helped us coordinate the experience at the resort.
David trusted us with the details, communicated when his plans changed and followed the proposal route we'd worked out together.
Stephanie and I handled the photography planning, discreet positioning and capturing the moment.
Everyone had a role.
And when the time came, everything worked together.
That's what makes a strong relationship between a resort, its vendors and its guests so valuable.
The couple gets to enjoy their experience while a team works behind the scenes to help everything run smoothly.
Why Our Relationship With Estancia La Jolla Means So Much
We've photographed proposals throughout Southern California, from Laguna Beach and La Jolla to Catalina Island, Palm Springs and the San Bernardino Mountains.
Every location has its own challenges.
But there's something special about working with a venue that knows you.
Over the past year, we've developed a relationship with the team at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa that we're genuinely grateful for.
David's proposal marked our fourth referral from the hotel.
Four times, their team felt comfortable connecting a guest with us to help capture one of life's biggest milestones.
For a small husband-and-wife photography business, that kind of trust means everything.
We know that when a hotel recommends us, we're not only representing Last Minute Photoshoot.
We're also representing the confidence that the hotel has placed in our work.
And we take that responsibility seriously.
To the entire Estancia team, thank you for continuing to trust us with your guests.
We appreciate the relationship we've built and look forward to creating many more beautiful experiences together.
What We Learned From David and Leila's Proposal
Every proposal teaches us something.
For David and Leila, a few lessons stand out.
1. Local Planning Makes Destination Proposals Easier
David was traveling from Florida.
He didn't need to know every detail about La Jolla or the layout of the resort.
We were able to recommend Point Flora, develop the walking route and coordinate the photography because we already had experience working there.
2. A Simple Cover Story Can Be More Effective Than an Elaborate One
There was no need to invent an extravagant reason for David and Leila to visit Point Flora.
They were staying at a beautiful resort.
An evening walk through the gardens made perfect sense.
The Wishing Tree gave them a natural stopping point before the proposal.
3. Flexibility Matters
Our original schedule changed while we were finishing another photoshoot in Laguna Beach.
We couldn't guarantee everything would work until we arrived, but we communicated with David and adjusted where we could.
Sometimes being flexible makes all the difference.
4. Knowing the Location Helps Us Stay Discreet
Because we'd photographed proposals at Estancia before, we were familiar with Point Flora and the surrounding pathways.
That helped us complete a quick dry run and position ourselves before the couple arrived.
5. Great Vendor Relationships Benefit the Couple
A trusted relationship between a hotel and a photographer can make planning much easier.
Instead of David trying to coordinate every detail from Florida, he had people familiar with the property helping him bring the experience together.
Planning a Surprise Proposal at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa?
If you're considering proposing at Estancia La Jolla, here are a few things we'd recommend.
Choose the right location. Point Flora is a beautiful option for a garden proposal, but the best spot depends on your timing, preferences and resort approval.
Create a natural reason to walk there. A casual stroll through the gardens can be an effective cover story.
Consider the Wishing Tree. A personal note can make the experience more meaningful and give your partner a special memory before the actual proposal.
Coordinate with the resort. Professional photography, decorations and use of specific spaces should be discussed with the hotel's team in advance.
Have a clear photography plan. Your photographer should know the walking route, positioning and approximate proposal timing before you arrive.
Allow room for changes. Travel schedules and reservations can shift. Build flexibility into the plan whenever possible.
