September has been a crazy month for us.
Proposal after proposal. Driving all over Southern California. Catalina Island. San Diego. Orange County. Early mornings. Sunsets. And more than a few days where one proposal ends and we're already getting into the car for the next one.
Shaun and Jasmine's Windansea Beach proposal was one of those days.
But their story actually started about two weeks earlier.
Shaun originally had Balboa Park in mind. Then, with the proposal getting closer, he decided Windansea Beach felt more like the moment he wanted to create for Jasmine. Plan Your La Jolla Proposal
September 2: Shaun Reaches Out
On September 2, Shaun reached out through the inquiry form on our website looking for information about our surprise proposal photography packages.
We sent over our packages and started helping with location ideas around San Diego.
Initially, Shaun was thinking about proposing at Balboa Park.
It's one of our favorite places to photograph proposals because there are so many different environments within a relatively small area.
But then, last minute—pun definitely intended 😂—the plan changed.
Shaun wanted to propose at Windansea Beach in La Jolla instead.
And we were all for it.
Windansea is completely different from Balboa Park.
Instead of gardens and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, you have waves, rocks, sand and an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean.
For a sunset proposal, it's pretty hard to beat.
So we pivoted.
Booking a Proposal While We Were Photographing Another Proposal
When Shaun officially booked with us, Steph and I were actually on Catalina Island photographing another surprise proposal.
That's basically what September has looked like for us.
But like we've mentioned before:
Love doesn't have a closed sign, so neither do we.
If you reach out to us at 1 PM or even 1 AM, there's a pretty good chance you'll hear back from us within minutes or an hour.
Sometimes we're sitting at home.
Sometimes we're editing.
And lately, sometimes we're literally photographing another proposal when your message comes through.
We're grateful for every inquiry we receive.
We know there's a person on the other side of that message carrying around a pretty big secret.
So if we can help, we're going to answer.

September 12 Was Already Completely Booked
Shaun originally asked whether we were available on September 12.
Unfortunately, we were already booked throughout the day.
So we looked at the next day:
September 13.
There was only one little problem.
We already had another proposal booked that afternoon too.
At 4:30 PM, we were scheduled to photograph a surprise proposal inside the Japanese Friendship Garden at Balboa Park.
Shaun wanted a sunset proposal at Windansea Beach in La Jolla.
That meant our September 13 plan became pretty simple:
Photograph the Balboa Park proposal.
Finish up.
Get back to the car as quickly as possible.
Drive from Balboa Park to La Jolla.
Park.
Get to our Windansea location.
And be ready before Shaun and Jasmine arrived.
Were we down to do it?
Absolutely.
If You Trust Us With This Moment, We Don't Take It Lightly
A proposal isn't something we look at as:
"We'll see if we can make it."
If we tell you we're going to be there, we're going to do everything we reasonably can to be there.
When someone puts their trust in us to photograph one of the biggest moments of their life, we don't take that lightly.
We'll move heaven and earth to come through for you.
And honestly, there have been a few days this year where it feels like we've actually had to do that.
September has definitely been one of those months.
But that's also part of what Last Minute Photoshoot has become.
Not every proposal gets planned six months in advance.
Sometimes the date changes.
Sometimes the location changes.
Sometimes another photographer cancels.
Sometimes you decide this week that you're ready to propose next week.
And sometimes you start with Balboa Park and realize:
Nope. Windansea Beach. That's the one.
Our job is to help make the plan work.
Planning Shaun's Windansea Beach Proposal
Once Windansea was finalized, we handled the logistics with Shaun.
We sent him the exact GPS pin for the proposal location.
We told him where to park.
We talked through how he and Jasmine would approach the location.
And most importantly, we needed a cue.
When you're photographing a surprise proposal, the cue is one of the smallest details that can make the biggest difference.
We need to know:
This is it. He's about to propose.
For Shaun, the cue was simple.
Take off the jacket.
Once we saw the jacket come off, we knew what was about to happen.
That meant we could get into position without saying anything, without approaching them and without giving away the surprise.
The plan was set.
Now we just needed September 13 to cooperate.
Proposal Number One: Balboa Park
September 13 arrived.
Our first proposal of the afternoon was at 4:30 PM inside the Japanese Friendship Garden at Balboa Park.
We photographed the proposal and wrapped up our time there.
Normally, after a proposal, you get a second to relax.
Maybe grab some water.
Check your cameras.
Talk about the shoot.
Not this time.
We had another couple waiting for their moment on the other side of San Diego.
So once we were finished:
Back to the car.
Windansea was next.
Racing the Sunset to La Jolla
There's something funny about being proposal photographers.
Our clients are usually nervous because they're about to ask someone to marry them.
Meanwhile, sometimes we're nervous because we're watching the sun get lower while driving across San Diego.
We headed toward La Jolla knowing exactly where we needed to be.
No scouting around when we arrived.
No deciding which rock looked best.
No texting Shaun asking where he was going.
We had already done the planning.
That's why we send exact locations and GPS pins beforehand.
When time matters, planning matters even more.
We arrived at Windansea, parked and headed toward the proposal spot.
We had only a few minutes to spare.
But we were there.
Cameras ready.
Pacific Ocean behind us.
Sun dropping toward the horizon.
Now we waited for Shaun and Jasmine.
Shaun & Jasmine Arrive at Windansea Beach
Then we saw them.
Shaun and Jasmine walked toward the rocks at Windansea.
From Jasmine's perspective, they were simply enjoying another beautiful evening in La Jolla.
From our perspective?
We were watching Shaun.
Waiting for one thing.
The jacket.
And then it happened.
Shaun took it off.
That was our cue.
We got into position.
Shaun led Jasmine onto the rocks with the Pacific Ocean stretching behind them.
He turned toward her.
And then he got down on one knee.
She Said Yes
Jasmine's reaction was beautiful.
Everything we'd talked through with Shaun—the location, timing, GPS pin, parking and cue—had led to these few seconds.
The waves rolled behind them.
The evening light settled across Windansea.
And Jasmine said yes.
After racing from one San Diego proposal to another, we were exactly where we needed to be.
Sometimes that's all the win we need.
From Surprise Proposal to Windansea Engagement Photos
Once the surprise was over, the energy completely changed.
The nerves were gone.
The secret was out.
Shaun didn't have to worry about the ring anymore.
Jasmine knew why we'd been hanging around with cameras.
Now they could just enjoy being engaged.
We spent the remaining light photographing the two of them around Windansea Beach.
That's one of the reasons we love this location.
The proposal itself can happen on the rocks with the Pacific behind you, and afterward we can use the surrounding coastline for completely different photographs.
Waves.
Sand.
Rock formations.
Open ocean.
Golden-hour light.
And eventually those softer colors that arrive as the sun gets closer to the horizon.
One location can give us an entire engagement session without needing to get back into the car.
