The cliffs drop toward Black's Beach below while the Pacific stretches across the horizon.

We've photographed picnic proposals at both locations, and the experience isn't identical.

One of our favorite approaches is keeping the setup intentional:

The Pacific does most of the decorating for you.
You don't necessarily need an enormous installation when the entire ocean is sitting behind the proposal.
That's exactly what we did for Alex and Sayra.
Alex traveled from Kansas wanting a cliffside proposal overlooking the Pacific.
We helped choose the location, built the timeline, planned what they'd do afterward, shopped for their favorite snacks and refreshments, picked up flowers and created their picnic before they arrived.

If one area is occupied, there are usually other good possibilities nearby.

This is one of the biggest practical differences we've noticed from actually working at both locations.

Sunset Cliffs is extremely popular around sunset.
And we're not only talking about weekends.
We've seen the best areas fill up on weekdays and weekends.
Photographers.
Couples.
Families.
Tourists.
Locals watching sunset.
People walking dogs.
Everyone wants the same beautiful coastline at roughly the same time.
If you have one specific spot in mind, you shouldn't assume it will be empty just because you're proposing on a Tuesday.
That's why we arrive early.
We scout.
We look at what's happening around us.
And we keep backup options in mind.
The Gliderport Gives You More Room to Adapt
The La Jolla Gliderport can absolutely become busy too.
But we've found that it generally gives us more options for finding a good proposal spot, whether we're working on a weekday or weekend.
If our first idea isn't working, we can usually look around and find another angle or area that still gives us that dramatic Pacific Ocean backdrop.
That flexibility can take a lot of pressure off the proposal.
If Crowds Make You Nervous...
We'd lean toward the La Jolla Gliderport.
Not because it will necessarily be empty.
It probably won't be.
But because we're generally more confident that we'll be able to adapt if someone is occupying the exact place we originally envisioned.
4. Which Is Better for Sunset?
Both.
Seriously.
You don't choose between Sunset Cliffs and the Gliderport because only one has a sunset.
Both overlook the Pacific and can produce beautiful evening light.
The difference is how the landscape interacts with that light.
Sunset Cliffs at Golden Hour
Sunset Cliffs can create beautiful warm light across the cliffs, trails, vegetation and ocean.
As the sun gets lower, the landscape changes quickly.
That's why we normally don't want the actual proposal happening at the exact minute the sun disappears.
We want light left afterward.
La Jolla Gliderport at Golden Hour
The Gliderport gives you an enormous open sky.
The elevated viewpoint allows us to photograph couples against the Pacific without needing to descend toward the beach.
And when the paragliders are flying?
It can be pretty hard to beat.
There's also another little bonus.
Cliffhanger Cafe
The Cliffhanger Cafe at the Gliderport is one of those small conveniences that can make the overall experience better.
You can grab a quick bite or something to drink while sitting above the Pacific and watching paragliders fly as the sun begins to set.
That can be useful before the proposal, after the proposal or even as part of your cover story.
Instead of simply arriving, proposing and leaving, you can turn the Gliderport into more of an experience.
Grab something to eat.
Watch the gliders.
Take in the view.
Then continue celebrating afterward.
Definitely a plus for the Gliderport.
5. Which Is Easier to Find?
For an out-of-town client, we'd give the edge to the La Jolla Gliderport as a destination.
The Gliderport has a recognizable endpoint.
You drive down Torrey Pines Scenic Drive toward the Gliderport and reach the dirt parking area near the cliff.
Sunset Cliffs is different.
"Meet us at Sunset Cliffs" isn't good enough.
Sunset Cliffs stretches along a substantial portion of the Point Loma coastline.
There are multiple areas and access points.
That's why we don't simply send our clients the name of the park.
We send them an exact GPS pin.
When you're secretly carrying a ring and trying to act normal around your partner, the last thing you need is to wonder:
"Wait...which cliff?"
6. Which Has Better Parking?
Parking can become an issue at both locations, particularly around sunset.

Parking depends heavily on the section you're using.
Some areas have small lots while street parking is available around other portions of Sunset Cliffs.
The problem is that everyone else also wants to watch sunset.
We've seen parking and the most desirable proposal areas fill quickly on weekdays as well as weekends.
Build extra time into the plan.
La Jolla Gliderport Parking
The Gliderport has a recognizable dirt parking area at the end of Torrey Pines Scenic Drive.
But don't mistake having a parking area for guaranteed parking.
The Gliderport lot can fill quickly too, especially around sunset.
We've personally experienced enough congestion around a Gliderport proposal that we had to adapt the plan.
Our Parking Advice for Both
Don't build a proposal timeline where being 10 minutes late destroys everything.
Give yourself a buffer.
If we want you proposing at 6:15 PM, that doesn't mean you should be pulling into the area at 6:10.
The ring is already stressful enough.
Parking shouldn't be.
7. Which Is Better for an Elaborate Proposal Setup?
This depends heavily on what you mean by elaborate.
A romantic picnic is very different from:
A large floral arch
Dozens of candles
Oversized signage
Furniture
Multiple structures
Large groups
Both locations are public coastal environments, not private venues.
Rules can depend on the exact site, activity and setup.
The City of San Diego currently states that park-use permits are required for picnics. Requirements and allowable setups can change, so anyone planning décor, a commercial setup or a larger gathering should verify current rules for the exact location before proposal day.
Don't see something on TikTok or Instagram and assume:
"They did it, so I can too."
You don't know what permits they had, exactly where they were standing or whether the rules have changed.
When in doubt, verify.
8. Which Is Better for Privacy?
Neither is private.
We want to be transparent about that.
If you're expecting us to guarantee an empty cliff at sunset in San Diego, neither location is the right environment for that promise.
What we can control is the planning.
We can consider:

Backup spots
Sunset Cliffs can feel extremely intimate when everything lines up.
But because the most desirable spots fill quickly, you need a backup plan.
At the Gliderport, the environment feels more open, but that open space also gives us more opportunities to adjust.
If Privacy Is Your Main Priority
Tell us that before we choose the location.
Don't choose the place first and then tell us you need complete privacy.
Those are two very different conversations.
9. Which Is Better for Family and Friends?
Both can work.
The bigger question is:
How involved do you want your family to be?
Do they watch from a distance?
Hide nearby?
Run over after your partner says yes?
Help prepare the picnic?
Meet everyone afterward?
The Gliderport's open environment can make coordinating groups easier in some situations.
But that openness can also make hiding 15 excited family members pretty difficult. 😂
Sunset Cliffs can provide more separation depending on the location, but walking distance and terrain can become factors.

The proposal itself isn't the time to figure out where Mom should stand.
10. Which Is Better if Your Partner Is Wearing Heels?
Neither would be our first choice if your partner expects a perfectly flat walkway.
