Real Client Success Story | August 2026 | UCLA, Westwood & Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California
An intimate sunset moment between Farbod and Sophia at a scenic Santa Monica ocean overlook, secretly captured by Son and Stephanie Le of Last Minute Photoshoot just before Farbod got down on one knee. Their Golden Yes Proposal Package included personalized last-minute location planning and discreet surprise proposal photography in Los Angeles.
Sometimes the location where a couple's love story began feels like the perfect place to start their next chapter.
And sometimes, on the very day of the proposal, that entire plan changes.
Haha.
That's exactly what happened when Farbod contacted Stephanie and me about proposing to his girlfriend, Sophia, in Los Angeles.
The original plan was meaningful.
Both Farbod and Sophia had graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Farbod wanted to return to their alma mater for one of the biggest moments of their lives.
We chose the iconic Janss Steps on UCLA's campus.
We discussed the timing, where we'd position ourselves and the discreet cue Farbod would use when he was ready.
Everything was planned.
Stephanie and I drove to Los Angeles, arrived with time to spare and even stopped for lunch near UCLA.
Then, with the proposal approaching, Farbod changed his mind.
He wanted the ocean.
Something coastal, closer to the Malibu atmosphere he'd been imagining.
Suddenly, we were no longer planning a UCLA campus proposal.
We were trying to coordinate a surprise proposal overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, with very little time to find the right location.
And just like that, another Last Minute Photoshoot adventure began.
Farbod originally imagined proposing to Sophia at UCLA, where their story began. But when a last-minute change took the plan from campus to the Los Angeles coastline, we had to think quickly and make every minute count. Planning a surprise proposal in Los Angeles isn't always about sticking to the original plan. Sometimes the location changes, the timeline gets tighter, or a new idea feels more meaningful. What matters is having a team that can adapt while keeping the surprise intact.
At Last Minute Photoshoot, we're more than photographers. We help scout locations, coordinate timelines, create believable cover stories, provide exact GPS pins, and adjust when unexpected changes happen. From meaningful UCLA landmarks to dramatic Malibu coastlines and romantic Los Angeles gardens, we'll help you find a setting that feels right for your story.
Whether you're planning months ahead or changing everything just hours before the proposal, we'll work with you to bring the details together and discreetly capture the moment your partner says "yes."
Because sometimes the most unforgettable proposal isn't the one you originally planned. It's the one you trusted yourself to change.
You bring the ring and the vision. We'll help figure out the rest.
Plan Your Los Angeles Surprise Proposal
August 21: Farbod Reaches Out About Proposing at UCLA
On August 21, 2026, we received a message from Farbod.
He was planning to propose to Sophia and wanted someone to help capture the surprise.
What immediately caught our attention was the location.
UCLA.
Both Farbod and Sophia had graduated from the university, so returning to campus held personal meaning.
We love proposals that connect to a couple's history.
A beautiful beach or scenic overlook can make an incredible backdrop, but there's something special about proposing somewhere that already holds memories.
For Farbod and Sophia, UCLA represented an important chapter of their lives.
And Farbod wanted to make it part of their engagement story.
We jumped on a call to discuss his vision.
We went over the location, how he'd approach, how we'd stay discreet and what needed to happen when he was ready to propose.
After working through the details, we settled on Janss Steps.
Why We Originally Chose UCLA's Janss Steps
If you've spent time at UCLA, there's a good chance you're familiar with Janss Steps.
Located in the heart of UCLA's historic campus, the broad staircase connects the upper and lower portions of the campus near some of the university's most recognizable buildings.
For generations of Bruins, these steps have been part of everyday campus life.
Students pass through them on their way to classes, meet friends nearby and return years later to revisit their college memories.
For Farbod and Sophia, it felt like a fitting place to celebrate the next chapter of their relationship.
We planned to position ourselves nearby, appearing like ordinary people spending time on campus.
Farbod would lead Sophia toward the chosen area.
We'd wait for his signal.
And when the moment arrived, we'd begin photographing.
The goal was to capture the proposal naturally without drawing attention to ourselves or making Sophia suspicious.
We had our plan.
Now all we needed was proposal day.
Why We Always Arrive Early for Surprise Proposals
When the day arrived, Stephanie and I drove out to Los Angeles.
We gave ourselves more than enough time to get near UCLA.
That's something we've made a habit of doing, regardless of where we're photographing.
Los Angeles traffic can be unpredictable.
Parking can take longer than expected.
A location might be more crowded than anticipated.
And sometimes a client needs to adjust the plan.
We've learned that arriving early gives us something incredibly valuable.
Time.
Time to scout.
Time to check the lighting.
Time to communicate.
And time to solve problems before the couple arrives.
On this particular day, everything seemed to be going smoothly.
We were near UCLA with enough time to relax a little, so we decided to grab lunch.
We weren't rushing.
We weren't worried about making it on time.
We were ready for the plan we'd discussed with Farbod.
Or so we thought.
Haha.
The Last-Minute Message That Changed Everything
Then came the unexpected change.
Farbod wanted to propose somewhere else.
Not just another corner of UCLA's campus.
He wanted something completely different.
Something coastal.
Something closer to Malibu, with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop.
Now, we love the Los Angeles coastline.
From Malibu's dramatic bluffs to Santa Monica's ocean views, there are some incredible settings for surprise proposals.
But changing from a university campus to a coastal location on the same day is a pretty big adjustment.
We had already planned our positioning at Janss Steps.
We knew how the approach would work.
We'd discussed the cue.
And now we needed to find a new location, evaluate it and coordinate everything again.
All within a much smaller window.
This was one of those moments when Stephanie and I had to become laser-focused.
We didn't have time to overthink every possibility.
We needed to understand what Farbod wanted and find a practical way to make it happen.
From UCLA to the Pacific Coast: Finding a New Proposal Location
We quickly discussed possible coastal locations.
Farbod wanted the ocean to be part of the experience.
We considered the general Malibu area, but with our limited time, we needed somewhere that could work with the remaining schedule.
After reviewing the possibilities, we decided on an area in Santa Monica overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
It wasn't the original UCLA proposal.
And it wasn't a Malibu beach proposal.
But it gave Farbod the coastal atmosphere he wanted without requiring us to force a location that might not work within the time available.
That distinction matters.
When a client changes their proposal location, our job isn't simply to agree with the new idea.
We also need to consider whether we can execute it safely and discreetly.
How long will it take to reach the location?
Where can we park?
How will the couple approach?
Will the background work for photographs?
Can we find somewhere that doesn't make the surprise obvious?
And will we have enough time to communicate the new plan?
We had to answer those questions quickly.
A Very Small Window to Scout Santa Monica
Once we reached the Santa Monica area, we went straight into scouting mode.
We needed to find the ideal position overlooking the Pacific.
And we needed to do it fast.
We evaluated the available views and considered where Farbod and Sophia could approach naturally.
We also thought about where Stephanie and I could stand without attracting attention.
The location had to work for the couple and for our cameras.
There's a difference between finding a beautiful place and finding a beautiful place where a surprise proposal can actually unfold.
We needed both.
After settling on the location, we sent Farbod the information he needed to find us.
And almost immediately, the next part of the plan began.
He was arriving.
There was barely any time between finalizing the new location and seeing the couple approach.
This was definitely one of those situations where arriving early near UCLA had helped us absorb a major change.
But now, every second mattered.
Visual Contact: Farbod and Sophia Arrive
As Stephanie and I got into position, we saw Farbod and Sophia approaching.
They walked past us.
We made visual contact.
And we stayed relaxed.
One of the things we always try to avoid is making the photographer's presence obvious before the proposal.
If we suddenly start staring at the couple, adjusting our cameras or looking nervous, there's a chance we could give everything away.
So we try to blend into the environment.
Farbod knew the plan.
We knew what to watch for.
And Sophia was still unaware of the coordination happening around her.
Then Farbod gave us the signal.
A thumbs-up.
That was our cue.
The same simple signal we'd discussed during planning had survived an entirely different proposal location.
And that's one of the reasons we like using clear, discreet cues.
Even when everything else changes, everyone can still understand exactly when it's time.
One Thumbs-Up, One Unforgettable Moment
There are moments during a surprise proposal when everything seems to happen at once.
You've spent time discussing the plan.
You've traveled to the location.
You've scouted the setting.
You've made sure the couple knows where to go.
And then, suddenly, there's the signal.
For Farbod and Sophia, it was a thumbs-up overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica.
After a same-day change from UCLA to the coast, we'd reached the moment we'd been preparing for.
Our job was to be ready, stay focused and capture what happened next.
And that's what makes these experiences so exciting.
The setting may change.
The timing may change.
The approach may change.
But the reason we're there remains the same.
To preserve a moment that matters deeply to two people.
For Farbod and Sophia, the story of their proposal would now include not only their memories of UCLA, but also an unexpected journey to the Los Angeles coastline.
What This Experience Taught Us About Last-Minute Proposal Changes
We've photographed enough surprise proposals to know that even the most carefully planned experiences can change.
But Farbod and Sophia's story was a particularly good reminder.
We weren't adjusting the position by a few feet.
We weren't moving from one side of a park to another.
We were changing the entire setting.
From UCLA's Janss Steps in Westwood to a Pacific Ocean overlook in Santa Monica.
And we were doing it on the day of the proposal.
Here are a few lessons we've taken from experiences like this.
1. Arriving Early Gives You Options
If we'd planned to arrive at UCLA just minutes before the proposal, this change would have been much more difficult.
Arriving early gave us time to absorb the unexpected and work toward a new plan.
2. A Meaningful Location Doesn't Have to Be the Final Location
UCLA was meaningful because it connected to Farbod and Sophia's shared history.
But Farbod ultimately decided he wanted a coastal experience.
It's okay for a proposal vision to evolve.
The important thing is making sure the new plan can actually work.
3. Los Angeles Geography Matters
UCLA, Santa Monica and Malibu may all be associated with the Los Angeles area, but they aren't interchangeable locations.
Travel times, parking, access and crowds can vary considerably.
When you're changing plans, you need to consider the logistics rather than choosing a location based on photographs alone.
4. Keep the Proposal Cue Simple
Farbod's thumbs-up worked because it was easy to recognize.
We didn't need an elaborate signal or complicated sequence of actions.
A simple, discreet cue helped us coordinate the moment.
5. Scouting Is About More Than the View
We look for lighting, background, access, safe positioning and how the couple will naturally enter the scene.
Even when the scouting window is short, those details matter.
6. Communication Can Make or Break the Surprise
The new Santa Monica location only worked because Farbod and our team stayed in communication.
We discussed alternatives, selected a new area and shared the information he needed before he arrived.
Without that coordination, the last-minute change could have become confusing.
UCLA vs. Santa Monica vs. Malibu: Which Is Better for a Surprise Proposal?
One of the most interesting parts of Farbod and Sophia's experience was the contrast between the original plan and the final coastal setting.
All three areas can offer beautiful proposal experiences, but they have very different personalities.
UCLA: Meaningful Campus Memories
UCLA can be especially meaningful for alumni who met, studied or shared important experiences there.
The historic architecture, campus walkways and Janss Steps provide a distinctive setting.
It's a strong option for couples who want their proposal to connect to their personal history.
However, campus photography and special activities may require university approval, so it's important to check current rules before planning.
Santa Monica: Ocean Views and Coastal Atmosphere
Santa Monica offers Pacific Ocean scenery, coastal overlooks and a recognizable Southern California atmosphere.
Depending on the exact location, couples may be able to combine ocean views with nearby engagement portrait opportunities.
But it's also a busy coastal city, so crowd levels, parking, access and photography restrictions should be considered.
Malibu: Dramatic Coastal Landscapes
Malibu is known for beaches, coastal cliffs, hills and dramatic ocean scenery.
It's a wonderful option for couples looking for a more nature-focused proposal experience.
However, travel time, parking, tide conditions, beach access and permit requirements can make some locations more complicated.
For Farbod, the final decision came down to what he wanted the moment to feel like and what we could realistically coordinate within the remaining time.
And that led us to Santa Monica.
Frequently Asked Questions About Los Angeles Surprise Proposals
Can you plan a surprise proposal at UCLA?
Potentially, yes, depending on university policies and required permissions. UCLA's Janss Steps and other campus locations can provide meaningful settings for alumni couples. Confirm current photography and event requirements with UCLA before finalizing a plan.
Where are Janss Steps at UCLA?
Janss Steps are a prominent historic staircase on UCLA's Westwood campus in Los Angeles, near the university's central historic buildings.
Is Santa Monica a good location for a surprise proposal?
Yes. Santa Monica offers Pacific Ocean views, coastal scenery and a variety of settings that can work for romantic proposals. The exact location should be selected based on privacy, accessibility, lighting and applicable rules.
Can we change our surprise proposal location at the last minute?
Sometimes. It depends on the distance between locations, remaining time, photographer availability, access and any required approvals. Farbod's original UCLA plan changed to a Santa Monica coastal location on the day of his proposal.
Can a proposal photographer help scout a location in Los Angeles?
Yes. We help evaluate locations, lighting, positioning, access and discreet approaches. For Farbod and Sophia, we scouted a Santa Monica coastal setting after the original UCLA plan changed.
How do photographers stay hidden during a surprise proposal?
We coordinate positioning and discreet signals in advance. During Farbod and Sophia's experience, we made visual contact as they approached and waited for Farbod's thumbs-up cue.
Is Malibu or Santa Monica better for an ocean-view proposal?
It depends on the experience you want. Malibu offers dramatic natural coastal scenery, while Santa Monica provides ocean views with more urban coastal surroundings. Travel time, access, privacy and timing can help determine the better fit.
What should we do if our proposal plans change on the same day?
Communicate with your photographer immediately. Explain what you want to change, review realistic alternatives, confirm access and timing, and establish an updated meeting location and cue before arriving.
Sometimes the Best Plan Is Being Ready to Change the Plan
When Farbod first contacted us, he had a meaningful idea.
Return to UCLA.
Bring Sophia to a place connected to their shared college memories.
And propose at Janss Steps.
We loved that plan.
We discussed the details, prepared our approach and traveled to Los Angeles ready to make it happen.
But then Farbod decided he wanted something different.
He wanted the coast.
And with very little time to spare, we had to figure out how to turn that new vision into a workable proposal plan.
We moved from UCLA to Santa Monica.
Scouted an oceanfront location.
Shared the updated details.
And watched as Farbod and Sophia approached.
Then came the thumbs-up.
That one small signal was the culmination of all the planning and quick decisions that had brought us there.
Experiences like this remind Stephanie and me why we approach every photoshoot with extra time and a willingness to adapt.
Because sometimes everything goes according to plan.
And sometimes the plan changes completely.
Either way, our responsibility stays the same.
To be prepared, communicate clearly and capture the moments our clients have trusted us with.
Farbod and Sophia's story started with memories of UCLA and led us to the Pacific Ocean.
And that's a pretty memorable way to begin a new chapter.
Thank you, Farbod and Sophia, for trusting us to be part of your experience.
