A few messages later, his vision became clear — he wanted something unforgettable, romantic, and intimate. After weeks of back-and-forth planning, location scouting, and idea sharing, Juan finally chose a breathtaking Malibu Airbnb tucked along Corral Canyon as the place where he would ask Alani the biggest question of his life.

Why Corral Canyon, Malibu Is the Perfect Backdrop
For those who haven’t been, Corral Canyon sits high in the Malibu hills, a winding stretch overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway and the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean. It’s a place where the sound of the wind replaces the noise of the city — serene, cinematic, and perfect for a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Every turn offers sweeping views of the coastline, rugged cliffs, and golden light that photographers dream about. It’s also known for its peaceful privacy — though with that beauty comes spotty cell service and tricky lighting as the sun dips behind the canyons.
Still, for couples seeking an intimate Malibu proposal with panoramic views, it’s one of the most magical places in Southern California.
The Day of the Proposal
Stephanie and I decided to make a weekend out of it. Malibu is roughly three hours from us (depending on traffic), and we didn’t want to do another quick turnaround trip — the kind where you drive for hours, shoot, and immediately drive home. We booked our own Airbnb nearby, prepped all our camera gear the night before, and woke up ready to capture something special.
Juan had planned everything to perfection. He took Alani out for the day to keep her distracted, while both sides of their families, the florist, and we arrived at the property. The Airbnb’s owner greeted us and kindly gave us a quick tour — showing us the hidden corners, garden paths, and open spaces that would make for stunning photos. The moment we stepped onto the property, we could already envision how the light would fall through the trees and across the hills at golden hour.
As we began setting up, everyone worked together — arranging flowers, setting out candles, adjusting décor — and before long, everything looked like something out of a movie. All that was left was to wait.
The Moment That Changed Everything
Signal was limited, so communication was spotty. We couldn’t rely on texts to coordinate, only instinct and timing. As Juan’s car approached, we found our hiding spots, hearts pounding. Even after photographing countless proposals, this moment never gets old. The energy, the anticipation, the emotion — it always feels brand new.
As Juan led Alani to the spot overlooking the canyon, Stephanie and I silently took our positions. Within seconds, Juan dropped to one knee, holding out a ring that sparkled in the soft afternoon light. Alani gasped, covered her face, and then — the moment we were all waiting for — she said yes.
Cheers erupted from both families, who had been waiting nearby to surprise her. It was pure joy — laughter, tears, hugs, and applause echoing through the hills. The energy was contagious. Family members offered pose ideas, shared suggestions, and helped us create images that were not only stunning but deeply personal.
From Proposal to Engagement Session
Once the proposal wrapped, we transitioned into an engagement session, using the property’s natural textures — rustic wood, soft greenery, and the rolling hills of the Malibu canyons as our backdrop. The light that afternoon was golden and diffused, cascading gently across the canyon ridgelines and creating a soft, cinematic glow. Juan and Alani moved effortlessly together — still processing what had just happened, smiling, laughing, and holding on to each other between every frame.
We guided them through a mix of candid and posed shots, capturing that unfiltered joy that comes right after a “yes.” Every corner of the property offered something unique — from sunlit pathways to shaded terraces that framed the surrounding hills perfectly. It wasn’t just about composition or angles; it was about preserving the emotions that filled the air. You could feel the gratitude, the relief, and the excitement of a brand-new chapter beginning.
It wasn’t just a proposal — it became a family celebration and a visual story of love told through the beauty of the Malibu canyons.
Reflections from the Hills
That night, as the sun set and the canyon quieted, Stephanie and I packed up our cameras and sat for a moment outside our Airbnb, reflecting. It was our first time photographing a surprise proposal in Malibu, and it reminded us why we do what we do — to capture the moments that change lives forever.
Every couple brings a new story, and every proposal teaches us something new about love, planning, and presence. For Juan and Alani, it wasn’t just about the ring — it was about the thought, the family, and the courage to create something memorable.
