Plan Your Victoria Beach Proposal
What Is Victoria Beach?
Victoria Beach is a public beach located along the southern end of Laguna Beach, California.
Many visitors also refer to the area surrounding the famous Pirate Tower as Mermaid Beach, although both names are commonly used to describe the same stretch of coastline.
The beach is best known for:
The historic Pirate Tower
Towering coastal cliffs
Tide pools
Golden-hour sunsets
A secluded, romantic atmosphere
Unlike many beaches in Southern California, Victoria Beach feels tucked away from the rest of the city, making it one of the most unique places to plan a surprise proposal.
Why We Love Proposing at Victoria Beach
We've photographed proposals all across Southern California, but Victoria Beach continues to be one of the locations we recommend most.
Here's why:
One of the most recognizable proposal locations in Laguna Beach
The iconic Pirate Tower creates a one-of-a-kind backdrop
Beautiful sunsets almost year-round
Romantic coastal scenery
Gorgeous engagement portraits after the proposal
Perfect for destination proposals
Every proposal here feels like its own story.
Where to Park
One of the biggest surprises for visitors is parking.
Victoria Beach does not have a large public parking lot directly next to the beach.
Most visitors either:
Find metered parking along Pacific Coast Highway (Coast Highway)
Find legal street parking in the surrounding neighborhood (always follow posted parking regulations)
During summer weekends and holidays, parking fills quickly.
We usually recommend arriving 45–60 minutes before you actually plan on walking down to the beach.
Giving yourself extra time removes unnecessary stress and helps keep the proposal relaxed.
How Do You Get to Victoria Beach?
After parking, you'll walk through the residential neighborhood until you reach the public beach access staircase.
The walk itself isn't difficult, but it can surprise first-time visitors because the entrance is tucked between homes rather than a large public parking area.
Once you reach the sand, turn toward the Pirate Tower and enjoy one of Laguna Beach's most scenic walks.
Why the Tide Matters More Than Almost Anything Else
This is probably the biggest planning mistake we see.
Many people assume Victoria Beach looks exactly the same all day.
It doesn't.
The Pirate Tower sits very close to the shoreline, which means the ocean changes the landscape throughout the day.
During higher tides, the water can cover much of the sand surrounding the tower, making it difficult—or even unsafe—to walk around it.
That's why we always check tide conditions before recommending proposal times.
One of the websites we regularly use is the Victoria Beach weekly tide chart:
https://www.tideschart.com/United-States/California/Orange-County/Victoria-Beach/Weekly/
Checking the tide only takes a minute and can completely change your proposal experience.
How to Read the Tide Chart (The Easy Version)
If you've never looked at a tide chart before, don't worry.
It's much simpler than it looks.
Think of the graph like rolling hills.
When the line reaches its lowest point, that's low tide.
When it reaches the highest point, that's high tide.
Good Times
✅ Low tide
✅ Falling tide
✅ One to two hours before low tide
These conditions usually provide the easiest walk to the Pirate Tower and more beach to explore afterward.
Use Caution
Rising tide
Larger surf days
Busy holiday weekends
Times We Usually Avoid
❌ High tide if your goal is to walk around the Pirate Tower.
Waiting until you arrive to check the tide can sometimes mean changing your proposal location entirely.
When Is the Best Time to Propose?
Our favorite time is approximately 45–60 minutes before sunset.
This gives you:
Soft golden-hour light
Comfortable temperatures
Beautiful ocean colors
Time for engagement portraits afterward
Sunset photos to finish your gallery
If privacy is your biggest priority, sunrise can also be an incredible option.
Local Tips We Share With Every Client
Arrive Early
Parking disappears much faster than most visitors expect.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
You'll be walking down stairs and across sand before changing into nicer shoes if you'd like.
Check the Tide Before Leaving
Never assume conditions are the same every day.
Have a Backup Plan
Even the best proposal plans sometimes need small adjustments because of weather or tides.
That's why flexibility always helps.

When the moment finally came, Danny got down on one knee with the Pirate Tower behind them as Bri said "Yes."

Why Danny Chose Victoria Beach
After talking through several locations around Laguna Beach, we kept coming back to one place.
Victoria Beach.
Known for its iconic pirate tower, dramatic cliffs, secluded shoreline, and incredible sunsets, Victoria Beach has quietly become one of our favorite locations for surprise proposals.
The area surrounding the famous tower is often called Mermaid Beach, though most visitors simply refer to the entire location as Victoria Beach. Regardless of what you call it, it's one of the most unique beaches in all of Southern California.
Unlike many proposal locations, Victoria Beach feels adventurous, intimate, and unforgettable.
It's easy to understand why couples from around the country choose this hidden stretch of coastline for one of the biggest moments of their lives.
Planning a Destination Proposal Takes More Than Photography
As we've photographed more surprise proposals over the years, we've realized something.
Most couples don't just need a photographer.
They need someone who can help them plan the entire experience.
That's why we've continued adding more value to our proposal packages.
For Danny, photography was only part of the experience.
We helped build a personalized itinerary around what he and Bri enjoy doing while visiting Laguna Beach. We shared restaurant recommendations, helped coordinate reservations, recommended activities throughout the day, answered location questions, and mapped out exactly how the proposal would unfold.
Think of it as having both a proposal photographer and a local concierge.
Our goal is simple:
Remove the stress so you can focus on enjoying one of the biggest days of your life.
What You Should Know About Proposing at Victoria Beach
Victoria Beach is one of the most beautiful proposal locations in Orange County, but it's also one of the easiest places to underestimate.
The beach is accessed through a residential neighborhood just off Coast Highway. Parking is extremely limited, especially on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is essential. Depending on availability, you may need to park along Coast Highway and walk through the neighborhood before reaching the stairs that lead down to the beach.
The biggest factor, however, is the tide.
The famous pirate tower sits near the shoreline, and during high tide, waves can completely surround the area. On certain days, the water rises enough that walking around the tower becomes difficult—or even unsafe.
Because of that, we always monitor tide conditions before recommending Victoria Beach for a proposal.
For Danny's proposal, we arrived well before he did to make sure everything looked exactly as expected.
Once we confirmed the tide was low enough and conditions were safe, we sent him the thumbs up.
It was time.
The Proposal
Stephanie and I blended in like tourists, walking around taking photos while keeping an eye on the trail leading toward the tower.
A few minutes later, we spotted Danny and Bri making their way down the beach.
As planned, we casually walked over and asked if they wouldn't mind taking a quick photo for us.
After thanking them, we smiled and offered to return the favor.
As soon as Danny and Bri stepped into position with the pirate tower behind them, everything slowed down.
Danny reached for Bri's hands.
He took a deep breath.
Then he dropped to one knee.
For a brief moment, the beach seemed completely still.
Bri's expression instantly changed from curiosity to complete surprise.
She covered her face, laughed, cried, and moments later...
She said yes.
One of our favorite parts about photographing proposals isn't simply documenting the surprise.
It's watching two people forget the camera is even there.
Those first few moments after the "yes" are always the most genuine.
Chasing the Last Light
With the proposal complete, we spent the next thirty minutes exploring Victoria Beach together.
We photographed them beneath the cliffs.
Along the shoreline.
Near the iconic pirate tower.
Every few minutes the light became softer and warmer.
Then something unexpected happened.
Just as the sun began dropping below the horizon, dolphins appeared offshore.
As if Laguna Beach wanted to congratulate them too.
Sometimes nature gives you a little extra.
This was one of those evenings.
