Sometimes everything goes exactly according to plan.

And sometimes the lifeguard tells you the beach is about to close minutes before your client is supposed to propose.

That was the situation we found ourselves in at Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach while waiting for Nick and Tam.

The tide was coming in.

The lifeguard was preparing to close off our side of the beach.

Nick was still walking toward us.

And somewhere nearby was a very important engagement ring.

Thankfully, Nick arrived—in the nick of time.

Sorry, Nick. We had to. 😂

But before we get to that part, this story actually started a couple of weeks earlier and more than 1,000 miles away.

Together, we turned that idea into a sunset proposal at Victoria Beach with Laguna Beach's iconic Pirate Tower in the background. From choosing the location and building the cover story to scouting conditions, coordinating the timeline, and sending the exact GPS pin, we handled the details locally while Nick focused on keeping the biggest surprise of their trip a secret.

Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal

Planning a Laguna Beach Proposal From Canada

Nick reached out to Last Minute Photoshoot in late July about photographing a surprise proposal on August 10.

He was traveling to Southern California from Canada with his longtime girlfriend, Tam, along with his mom and their two girls.

During the trip, Nick wanted to ask Tam to marry him.

He already knew one thing he wanted:

a beautiful sunset.

What he didn't know yet was exactly where in Southern California that moment should happen or how we could photograph it without Tam realizing what was going on.

That's where we came in.

There was just one small problem when his message arrived.

We were in the mountains photographing another proposal.

Trying to Plan a Proposal With Almost No Cell Service

One thing we've learned running Last Minute Photoshoot is that inquiries don't exactly wait until you're sitting comfortably behind a computer.

They come while we're driving.

While we're scouting.

While we're setting up floral arches.

And sometimes while we're standing somewhere in the mountains with barely enough cell service to send a text.

When Nick reached out, our reception was extremely spotty.

We still wanted him to know we had received his message, so we did our best to respond.

Some messages went through.

Others didn't.

Eventually, we were able to let Nick know that we had seen his inquiry and would need to properly get back to him later in the day when we had reliable service.

We scheduled a call for the following day.

Once we finally had a chance to talk without our phones fighting for one bar of service, we could actually start planning.

Where Should You Propose in Laguna Beach?

During our call, we went through several location possibilities and talked about what Nick envisioned.

He wanted somewhere beautiful.

Somewhere that would photograph well around sunset.

And most importantly, somewhere we could create a believable surprise.

Laguna Beach immediately gave us several possibilities.

But one location stood out:

Victoria Beach.

More specifically, the area near Laguna Beach's famous Pirate Tower.

Victoria Beach is one of the most recognizable beaches in Laguna Beach.

The coastline, rocks, ocean and Pirate Tower create a setting that looks completely different from places like Heisler Park or Crescent Bay Point Park.

It also comes with a few challenges.

Parking can be difficult.

Getting down to the beach requires some walking.

And most importantly for this particular story:

the tide matters.

We finalized Victoria Beach and started building Nick's plan.

Building the Cover Story

Once we had the location, we needed to answer the next question:

How do we photograph Nick and Tam without Tam realizing photographers are waiting for them?

We decided to keep it simple.

Steph and I would look like another couple enjoying Victoria Beach.

When Nick and Tam walked past us, we'd ask:

"Hey, can you take a photo of us?"

Nick would take our photo.

We'd offer to return the favor.

We'd position Nick and Tam where we wanted them.

Our cameras would already be ready.

And then Nick could take it from there.

Simple cover stories are often our favorite.

The more complicated a surprise becomes, the more opportunities there are for something to feel suspicious.

To Tam, we'd just be two strangers asking for a quick picture at the beach.

At least, that was the plan.

Timeline. GPS Pin. Cover Story. Ready.

Over the days leading up to August 10, we prepared everything Nick needed.

We created his timeline.

We sent him the exact GPS location.

We reviewed the walking route.

We explained where we'd be.

We went over the cover story.

We coordinated when his family would join us.

By proposal day, everything was dialed in.

All Nick needed to do was enjoy the day with Tam and eventually get her to Victoria Beach.

Steph and I would handle the rest.

Or so we thought.

From Disneyland to Victoria Beach

Nick and his family spent proposal day at Disneyland.

Eventually, Nick and Tam left early and started making their way toward Laguna Beach.

Nick's mom and the two girls would come separately and meet everyone after the proposal.

That gave Nick and Tam a believable reason to have some time alone together.

Meanwhile, Steph and I arrived at Victoria Beach early.

We walked down.

Checked our location.

Looked at the light.

Got ourselves into position.

Everything looked good.

Until it didn't.

The Tide Started Coming In

As we waited, the ocean started getting increasingly aggressive.

The tide was moving in.

Then a lifeguard began letting people know that our side of Victoria Beach was going to be closed off.

Not exactly what you want to hear when you've planned an entire surprise proposal around one specific location.

We immediately started thinking:

What about the proposal?

Nick was already on his way.

Tam had no idea what was happening.

His family was coming afterward.

We had built the entire plan around this side of the beach.

And now we were being told everyone would need to leave.

So we talked to the lifeguard.

We explained that we were about to photograph a surprise proposal and asked whether he could give us just a little more time.

Thankfully, he was understanding.

He told us that by the time he came back through, though, we would need to move.

Fair enough.

Now we just needed Nick to get there.

Preferably quickly.

Watching Nick's GPS Get Closer

This is one of those moments where live location sharing becomes incredibly useful.

We pulled up Nick's GPS location.

He wasn't far.

The lifeguard would be coming back.

The tide wasn't slowing down.

We kept watching that little location marker get closer.

Then finally...

Nick and Tam appeared.

In the nick of time.

Okay, that's the last one.

Maybe.

"Can You Take a Photo of Us?"

Steph and I stayed in character.

As Nick and Tam approached, we asked Nick if he'd take a photo of us.

He said yes.

Perfect.

He took our picture.

Then we offered to return the favor.

To Tam, it was just a friendly exchange between strangers at Victoria Beach.

But Steph and I already knew exactly what was about to happen.

We positioned them.

We got our cameras ready.

And Nick turned toward the woman he'd traveled from Canada with.

His longtime girlfriend.

The mother of this beautiful family.

And the person he'd brought all the way to Laguna Beach to surprise.

Nick got down on one knee.

Tam Said Yes

Everything happened quickly.

Nick proposed.

Tam was completely surprised.

And she said yes.

For a few moments, the tide, the lifeguard and the beach closure didn't matter anymore.

It was just the two of them.

We photographed the proposal candidly from our position while Nick and Tam had their moment together.

The plan had worked.

Tam had no idea.

Nick officially had a fiancée.

And we had managed to pull everything off before losing access to that part of Victoria Beach.

Barely.

And Then the Ocean Reminded Us It Was Still There

Once the proposal was finished, reality returned pretty quickly.

The tide continued coming in strong.

The lifeguard came back through and we were asked to move to the other side of the beach.

At that point, nobody was upset about it.

Nick had already proposed.

Tam had said yes.

We had captured the moment.

Now it simply became part of their story.

And honestly, moments like this are exactly why we always tell clients that beach proposals require flexibility.

You can plan the timeline.

You can send the GPS pin.

You can build the perfect cover story.

You can know exactly where everyone should stand.

But you can't negotiate with the Pacific Ocean.

Why We Always Check the Tide at Victoria Beach

Victoria Beach is beautiful, but it's a location where tide and surf conditions genuinely matter.

The amount of usable beach can change significantly depending on the water level.

Areas that are easy to access at one point in the day can become much more difficult—or unsafe—as the tide rises.

That's especially important if you're hoping to take photos around the Pirate Tower or rocks.

Our experience with Nick and Tam is a perfect example.

When we first arrived, we had our location.

Not long afterward, the water was coming in and the lifeguard needed people out.

If you're planning a Victoria Beach surprise proposal, checking the tide shouldn't be an afterthought.

It should be part of the plan.

And even after checking it, you should still be prepared to adapt to the conditions you actually find when you arrive.

The Proposal Was Over. The Photos Weren't.

Once we moved away from the closing area, we spent the remainder of the evening photographing Nick and Tam.

This is one of our favorite parts of surprise proposals.

Before the proposal, everything is secretive.

We're watching GPS locations.

Pretending we don't know our client.

Thinking about cues.

Watching the surroundings.

Making sure the partner doesn't catch us staring at them with cameras.

Then they say yes.

And suddenly everyone can relax.

Now we could just enjoy Victoria Beach and use whatever light remained to photograph the newly engaged couple.

Nick and Tam laughed.

They held each other.

They took in the fact that they were actually engaged.

And eventually, the rest of their family joined the celebration.

What started as a surprise proposal turned into engagement and family photos documenting an entire chapter of their trip to Southern California.

More Than Just Two People Getting Engaged

Something we especially loved about Nick's proposal was that this wasn't only about the two people standing in front of our cameras.

His mom and the two girls had traveled with them from Canada.

They were part of the story too.

The plan was intentionally designed so Nick and Tam could have the proposal itself together before everyone joined afterward.

That gave Tam the surprise.

It gave Nick the intimate moment he'd planned.

And then it gave their family the chance to celebrate with them afterward.

For us, those family photographs became just as meaningful as the engagement portraits.

Years from now, the girls won't only see photographs of the day Nick proposed to Tam.

They'll see that they were there too.

What Nick & Tam's Proposal Taught Us About Victoria Beach

If you're looking through photos of Victoria Beach and imagining your own proposal in front of the Pirate Tower, Nick and Tam's story is a good example of both why we love this location and why it requires planning.

The scenery is incredible.

The Pirate Tower gives Laguna Beach a backdrop you won't find at most Southern California beaches.

Sunset can be beautiful.

And there are plenty of opportunities for engagement photos afterward.

But Victoria Beach isn't a controlled environment.

The tide can change your plans.

Surf conditions matter.

Parking can take time.

Beach access takes some effort.

Other people will be around.

And certain areas may become inaccessible depending on conditions.

That's not a reason to avoid Victoria Beach.

It's a reason to plan Victoria Beach correctly.

A Proposal Plan Should Be Able to Change

We could have looked at the incoming tide and panicked.

Instead, we talked to the lifeguard.

We explained what was happening.

We checked Nick's location.

We knew he was close.

And we adjusted.

That's something we've learned photographing proposals throughout Southern California.

The best plan isn't necessarily the one where nothing goes wrong.

It's the one that still works when something does.

For Nick and Tam, we had just enough time.

The cover story worked.

Nick got down on one knee.

Tam said yes.

And then the ocean basically told all of us:

Okay, congratulations. Now move.

😂

From Canada to a Laguna Beach Yes

Nick contacted us from Canada looking for somewhere beautiful to propose to his longtime girlfriend.

A couple of weeks later, he and Tam were standing together at Victoria Beach with the Pacific Ocean behind them.

What Tam thought was an ordinary trip to the beach turned into two strangers asking them to exchange photos.

Then Nick turned toward her.

He got down on one knee.

And everything changed.

The tide came in.

The beach began closing.

We moved locations.

Their family joined us.

And we spent the rest of the evening documenting a newly engaged couple and the people they love most.

It wasn't a perfectly predictable proposal.

It was better.

It became a story.

For Miguel, it was more personal.

One of his first dates with Jocelyn had been in Laguna Beach.

So when he decided this was where he wanted to ask her to marry him, the location already had a piece of their story attached to it.

There was just one problem.

Five days before the proposal, Miguel suddenly didn't have a photographer.

Five Days. One Canceled Photographer. And a Laguna Beach "Yes" That Still Had to Happen.
When Miguel reached out after his original photographer canceled, there wasn't time to overthink everything. There was a proposal to save. Within days, we helped turn an unexpected cancellation into a fully planned surprise proposal at Crescent Bay Park. From choosing the location and building the timeline to sending the exact GPS pin, coordinating the surprise, and arriving early to scout the conditions, our job was to remove the uncertainty so Miguel could focus on Jocelyn—and the question he came to Laguna Beach to ask.

Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal

A July 3rd Message From South Carolina

On July 3, Miguel reached out to Last Minute Photoshoot through one of our website submission forms.

His message explained the situation pretty quickly.

He was flying into Southern California from South Carolina and wanted to propose to his then-girlfriend, Jocelyn, on July 8.

He knew it was last minute.

His original photographer had canceled on him the night before he reached out to us.

Now he needed someone who could not only photograph the proposal, but help him figure out where in Laguna Beach to actually do it.

When we saw the message, we immediately responded.

Within the next hour, Miguel and us were already going back and forth discussing locations, packages and what he envisioned for the proposal.

This is exactly why we built Last Minute Photoshoot around being able to move quickly.

Sometimes someone has been planning for six months.

Sometimes another photographer cancels five days before the proposal.

Either way, the question you're planning to ask is still just as important.

Finding the Right Laguna Beach Proposal Location

Miguel knew he wanted Laguna Beach because of its connection to his relationship with Jocelyn, but he needed help narrowing down the exact location.

Laguna gives you quite a few options.

You have places like Heisler Park, Victoria Beach, Treasure Island Park, Crescent Bay and several other stretches of coastline that can create completely different proposal experiences.

For Miguel's vision, we eventually landed on Crescent Bay Point Park.

It gave us the elevated coastal backdrop we wanted while also providing enough space for the setup Miguel had in mind.

And this wasn't going to be a photo-only proposal.

Miguel wanted to add our Signature Yes setup.

Now we weren't just planning where Miguel would get down on one knee.

We were planning what Jocelyn would see as she approached the proposal.

Adding the Signature Yes Setup

The idea was to create a romantic focal point overlooking the Laguna Beach coastline.

Our Signature Yes setup gave Miguel a decorated proposal location rather than having him simply stop somewhere along the park.

That also changed how we planned everything else.

Where would Miguel and Jocelyn enter?

When should the music begin?

Where would we photograph from?

Where should family be?

What would Jocelyn see first?

And most importantly:

How do we make everything feel effortless for Miguel when he arrives?

The setup may be the part everyone sees in the photographs.

But most of the work happens before the couple ever gets there.

Five Days of Planning

With only a few days between Miguel's first message and July 8, we got to work.

We provided Miguel with a timeline so he knew exactly how the evening should flow.

We sent him a GPS pin to the exact proposal location so there wouldn't be any confusion about where he needed to walk.

As the proposal got closer, we jumped on one final call.

We walked through the plan again.

Arrival.

Parking.

The setup.

Family.

Where we'd be.

Where Miguel needed to go.

And what would happen once he and Jocelyn started approaching us.

By the time we got off the phone, we were both dialed in.

At that point, Miguel really only had one job left:

Show up with Jocelyn.

We'd take care of the rest.

July 8 at Crescent Bay Point Park

Proposal day arrived.

We headed to Crescent Bay Point Park early so we could start preparing everything before Miguel and Jocelyn arrived.

Family was already part of the plan, so we met up with them while getting things ready.

That's another part of proposal photography we love.

Before Miguel and Jocelyn even arrived, we were hearing stories about them from the people closest to them.

It turns a name on our calendar into an actual couple.

You start learning who they are, how everyone is connected and just how much this moment means to the people waiting nearby.

We went over the final details with the family.

Then we finished setting up.

The arch was ready.

Everything was in position.

Cameras were ready.

Now we just needed Miguel.

We sent him a message:

We're ready whenever you are.

The Walk Toward the Arch

Eventually, Miguel let us know they had arrived.

He and Jocelyn parked and started making their way toward the proposal location.

From that point on, there wasn't anything else Miguel needed to coordinate.

This was his moment.

As they began approaching the setup, we started the music.

For proposals with setups like this, we love having a song playing as the couple walks toward everything.

It adds another layer to the moment without Miguel having to say or do anything.

For Miguel and Jocelyn, we played a violin version of "If I Lose Myself."

They kept walking.

The floral arch came into view.

The ocean stretched out behind it.

And Jocelyn began realizing that whatever was waiting ahead was for her.

Miguel Asked. Jocelyn Said Yes.

They reached the arch.

Miguel turned toward Jocelyn.

And five days after contacting us because his original photographer had canceled, he was finally standing exactly where we'd planned.

He started his proposal.

Then Miguel got down on one knee.

He asked Jocelyn to marry him.

She said yes.

We stayed back and captured the moment candidly while everything unfolded between them.

The planning was finished.

The secret was out.

And Miguel officially had a fiancée.

Then We Chased the Light

Once the proposal was over, there was no reason to stop.

We had Laguna Beach.

We had beautiful evening light.

And we had two people who had just gotten engaged.

So we spent the remainder of their session doing one of our favorite things:

chasing the light.

We photographed Miguel and Jocelyn around Crescent Bay Point Park, using the coastal scenery and changing evening light to create their engagement portraits.

Some photos were romantic.

Some were candid.

Some were posed.

And plenty were simply the two of them enjoying the fact that the plan had actually worked.

That's something we always want couples to experience after a surprise proposal.

The proposal itself happens incredibly fast.

You spend days, weeks or months thinking about it.

Then suddenly you're on one knee.

They say yes.

Everyone celebrates.

And it's over.

The engagement session afterward gives you a chance to slow everything down.

Why Crescent Bay Point Park Worked for Miguel & Jocelyn

There are plenty of beautiful places to propose in Laguna Beach.

For Miguel and Jocelyn, Crescent Bay Point Park worked because it gave us something that fit their particular proposal.

Miguel wanted an ocean backdrop.

He wanted a decorated setup.

He wanted family involved.

And he wanted Laguna Beach because the city already meant something to their relationship.

That last part mattered most.

One of their first dates had happened here.

Now another chapter of their relationship would begin here too.

They came back to Laguna Beach as boyfriend and girlfriend.

They left as fiancés.

What Happens When Your Photographer Cancels Before Your Proposal?

Miguel's story is also a good reminder of something we've seen more than once:

Sometimes proposal plans change for reasons completely outside your control.

A photographer cancels.

A location becomes unavailable.

Weather changes.

Travel plans shift.

A vendor backs out.

When something like that happens a few days before your proposal, it's easy to feel like everything is falling apart.

But five days can actually be plenty of time when everyone communicates quickly.

Miguel reached out on July 3.

We responded.

Within an hour, we were already discussing locations and packages.

Then we chose Crescent Bay Point Park, worked out the setup, built the timeline, sent the GPS pin, coordinated with family and had one final planning call.

On July 8, Miguel proposed.

That's why we're such big believers in communication.

Last-minute doesn't have to mean unplanned.

You Shouldn't Be Coordinating Vendors While You're About to Propose

One of our goals with every proposal is getting to the point where our client has almost nothing left to think about on proposal day.

Miguel shouldn't be walking toward Jocelyn thinking:

Is the arch ready?

Where's the photographer?

Does my family know where to stand?

Did someone start the music?

Am I walking toward the right place?

Those are things we can figure out beforehand.

By the time Miguel parked at Crescent Bay Point Park, we had already met with family, finished the setup and gotten ourselves into position.

All he had to do was walk toward us with Jocelyn.

That's the experience we want.

You focus on what you're going to say.

We'll focus on everything happening around you.

Five Days Later, She Said Yes

On July 3, Miguel was in South Carolina looking for another photographer after his original plans unexpectedly changed.

Five days later, he was standing beneath a floral arch overlooking the Pacific Ocean with Jocelyn in front of him.

Music was playing.

Their family was nearby.

From a 10 PM Message to a Laguna Beach Yes | Derek & Bella’s Heisler Park Proposal

Derek gets down on one knee to propose to Bella at Heisler Park during their romantic sunset surprise proposal in Laguna Beach, California.

Some proposal stories start months in advance. Derek and Bella’s started with a message around 10 PM.

In late July, Derek reached out to Last Minute Photoshoot through our website and told us he was planning to propose to his then-girlfriend, Bella, on August 8, 2026. He already had two Laguna Beach locations in mind: Heisler Park or Crescent Bay Point Park.

So naturally, we did what any sane business owners would do at 10 o’clock at night.

We texted him back. Haha.

One of our biggest rules at Last Minute Photoshoot is simple: communicate quickly. Sometimes that means answering a question in the middle of the afternoon. Sometimes it means messaging a potential client at 2 AM.

Love doesn’t exactly operate during normal business hours. Neither do we, apparently.

It's 10 PM. You Still Don't Have a Proposal Plan. Good Thing You Found Us. 😅
Some of our favorite love stories begin with a late-night message from someone realizing, “Okay... I need some help pulling this off.” That's exactly how Derek & Bella's Laguna Beach story began. A message turned into a plan, the plan led us to Heisler Park, and eventually Derek was standing along the Laguna Beach coastline asking one of the biggest questions of his life. Plan Your Laguna Beach Proposal

From a Late-Night Inquiry to a Booked Proposal

To our surprise, Derek messaged us right back.

Although, thinking about it now, maybe it shouldn’t have been that surprising. We’re usually awake late editing photos anyway, so if an inquiry comes through while we’re sitting at our computers, there’s a pretty good chance we’ll respond immediately.

We scheduled a call with Derek for the following day.

On that call, we started putting everything together. We talked about Laguna Beach, Heisler Park versus Crescent Bay, and how to keep the proposal a surprise.

By that afternoon, Derek officially booked us.

We were stoked.

Now it was time to plan.

Choosing Heisler Park for Their Laguna Beach Proposal

Derek ultimately settled on Heisler Park in Laguna Beach after reading one of our previous client proposal stories from the location.

That’s one of our favorite things about sharing real proposals on our website. They’re not just pretty pictures. They help future clients imagine how their own proposal might actually work.

Derek had seen another couple’s story at Heisler Park. Now he wanted us to capture his and Bella’s love story there.

Once the location was confirmed, we got to work.

Choosing the Exact Proposal Spot

When we photograph locations more than once, we usually have several spots in mind rather than telling every client to stand in exactly the same place.

The light changes. Crowds change. The season changes. And sometimes one backdrop simply fits someone’s vision better than another.

For Derek, we narrowed it down to two options: Spot A or Spot B.

We showed him both.

Derek chose Spot A.

Now we could build the actual surprise around it.

And this one was going to require a little acting.

"Hey, Can You Take a Photo of My Wife and Me?"

The plan was for Derek and Bella to walk past us like we were complete strangers.

Stephanie and I would be hanging out at Heisler Park.

As Derek and Bella passed, I would approach Derek and ask:

"Hey, can you take a photo of my wife and me?"

He'd take our photo.

Then we'd return the favor.

Simple.

Natural.

And hopefully not suspicious.

We would take Derek's phone and start posing the two of them like any random couple helping another couple take a photograph at one of Laguna Beach's overlooks.

Except we already knew exactly what was about to happen.

We'd pose them for a few photos.

Then we'd give them one final direction:

Face each other.

That was Derek's cue.

Once Bella turned toward him, Derek would start his speech.

And from there, we'd stop pretending to be random tourists and start documenting one of the biggest moments of their lives.

One Final Call Before the Big Day

As August 8 got closer, we jumped on another call with Derek.

We went over the plan one more time.

Where to park.

Where to walk.

Where we'd be standing.

What we would look like.

How the photo exchange would work.

When he should start his speech.

And what would happen after Bella said yes.

By the end of that call, there wasn't much left for Derek to worry about.

Everything was planned.

Now all he had to do was show up with Bella.

And ask one question.

August 8 Arrived

On proposal day, we headed to Laguna Beach and got ourselves into position early.

We sent Derek our GPS location for the day along with a photo of us so he knew exactly who he was looking for.

Then we waited.

Eventually, we saw them.

Derek and Bella were walking toward us.

For Bella, it was just another beautiful evening at Heisler Park.

For Derek, every step was bringing him closer to the moment he'd been planning.

For us?

Showtime.

They passed us.

We approached Derek.

We asked him to take our photo.

He did.

Then we offered to take one for them.

Exactly as planned.

"Now Face Each Other"

We took a few photographs.

Nothing suspicious.

Just two strangers returning a favor.

Then came the pose we'd been waiting for.

We asked Derek and Bella to face each other.

Bella turned toward him.

Derek looked at her.

And the entire reason we were standing there pretending to be tourists finally came together.

Derek started his speech.

Then he got down on one knee.

He asked Bella to marry him.

She said yes.

The secret was finally out.

And now we could stop pretending. :)

Chasing the Laguna Beach Sunset

The proposal itself was only the beginning of their session.

Once Bella realized what had just happened and everyone had a chance to celebrate, we started moving.

One of the reasons we love photographing proposals at Heisler Park is the variety you can get without having to drive somewhere else afterward.

We started around the original proposal location.

Then we made our way toward the gazebo.

As the sun continued dropping, we followed the light through the park.

Eventually, we headed down toward the beach.

Cliffs.

Park scenery.

The gazebo.

Ocean views.

And finally, the sand.

Instead of spending the entire session standing in one location, we were able to give Derek and Bella a small Laguna Beach engagement session immediately after their proposal.

And the entire time, the evening light just kept getting better.

From Canada to Brazil to Laguna Beach

One of our favorite parts of doing this has very little to do with cameras.

It's getting to know our clients.

During the planning process and especially after the proposal, we get to hear pieces of the story that brought two people to that moment.

And Derek and Bella had quite the story.

Derek told us about their relationship and the distance that had been part of it.

About traveling from Canada to see Bella in Brazil.

About the effort it took to spend time together.

And now Bella had traveled from Brazil to California, not knowing Derek had an entirely different plan waiting for her in Laguna Beach.

Hearing stories like theirs gives the photographs a completely different meaning.

We're not just photographing two people standing in front of an ocean.

We're photographing everything that had to happen for those two people to be standing there together.

All the flights.

All the distance.

All the conversations.

All the visits.

All the waiting.

And now one very important trip to Laguna Beach.

Why Heisler Park Worked for Derek & Bella

Derek originally came to us considering both Heisler Park and Crescent Bay Point Park.

Both can be beautiful options for a Laguna Beach proposal.

For this particular plan, though, Heisler Park gave us exactly what we needed.

We had an overlook where we could naturally blend in.

There were enough visitors around that two photographers didn't immediately look suspicious.

Our "can you take our photo?" cover story made sense.

And after the proposal, we had multiple environments within walking distance for their engagement photos.

Most importantly, it worked for Derek and Bella's story.

That's something we always try to remind clients when they're choosing between proposal locations.

There isn't necessarily one "best" proposal spot in Laguna Beach.

There's the location that works best for your proposal.

Sometimes the Best Cover Story Is the Simplest One

This proposal also reminded us that surprise plans don't always need to be complicated.

No elaborate distraction.

No fake event.

No pretending they won a photoshoot.

No suspicious calendar invitation.

Just two people asking another couple to take their picture.

It's something that happens every day at scenic locations like Heisler Park.

And that's exactly why it worked.

Bella had no reason to think anything of it.

Until we asked them to face each other.

That's when their Laguna Beach walk became their proposal story.

From One Late-Night Message to "Yes"

It's funny thinking about how this entire story started.

Around 10 PM in late July, a submission appeared on our website.

Derek wanted to propose to Bella.

He was thinking about Laguna Beach.

He had August 8 in mind.

We happened to still be awake.

So we texted him.

A day later, we had a client.

A few weeks later, we were pretending to be strangers at Heisler Park.

And a few minutes after that, Bella was looking at Derek on one knee.

Then we spent the rest of the evening chasing the sunset through Laguna Beach while getting to know two people whose love story had already crossed countries to get there.

Those are the nights that remind us why the quick communication, planning calls, GPS pins, timelines and late nights are worth it.

Derek trusted us with a pretty big secret.

Bella trusted us with their memories once she realized what was happening.

And for a little while, we got to become part of a love story that stretched from Canada to Brazil to Laguna Beach, California.

Known for its iconic pirate tower, dramatic cliffs, secluded shoreline, and incredible sunsets, Victoria Beach has quietly become one of our favorite locations for surprise proposals.

The area surrounding the famous tower is often called Mermaid Beach, though most visitors simply refer to the entire location as Victoria Beach. Regardless of what you call it, it's one of the most unique beaches in all of Southern California.

Unlike many proposal locations, Victoria Beach feels adventurous, intimate, and unforgettable.

It's easy to understand why couples from around the country choose this hidden stretch of coastline for one of the biggest moments of their lives.

What You Should Know About Proposing at Victoria Beach

Victoria Beach is one of the most beautiful proposal locations in Orange County, but it's also one of the easiest places to underestimate.

The beach is accessed through a residential neighborhood just off Coast Highway. Parking is extremely limited, especially on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is essential. Depending on availability, you may need to park along Coast Highway and walk through the neighborhood before reaching the stairs that lead down to the beach.

The biggest factor, however, is the tide.

The famous pirate tower sits near the shoreline, and during high tide, waves can completely surround the area. On certain days, the water rises enough that walking around the tower becomes difficult—or even unsafe.

Because of that, we always monitor tide conditions before recommending Victoria Beach for a proposal.

For Danny's proposal, we arrived well before he did to make sure everything looked exactly as expected.

Once we confirmed the tide was low enough and conditions were safe, we sent him the thumbs up.

It was time.

The Proposal

Stephanie and I blended in like tourists, walking around taking photos while keeping an eye on the trail leading toward the tower.

A few minutes later, we spotted Danny and Bri making their way down the beach.

As planned, we casually walked over and asked if they wouldn't mind taking a quick photo for us.

After thanking them, we smiled and offered to return the favor.

As soon as Danny and Bri stepped into position with the pirate tower behind them, everything slowed down.

Danny reached for Bri's hands.

He took a deep breath.

Then he dropped to one knee.

For a brief moment, the beach seemed completely still.

Bri's expression instantly changed from curiosity to complete surprise.

She covered her face, laughed, cried, and moments later...

She said yes.

We photographed them beneath the cliffs.

Just as the sun began dropping below the horizon, dolphins appeared offshore.

A Surprise Proposal That Started in Palm Springs

In the middle of May, Arnold reached out to us looking for a photographer to capture a surprise proposal near the end of the month in Palm Springs.

After several phone calls and planning sessions, we came up with a different idea.

To help keep the proposal a complete surprise, we actually moved the proposal date forward to Memorial Day, May 25, throwing his girlfriend completely off the trail.

Sometimes the best proposal planning isn't just choosing the perfect location.

It's creating enough uncertainty that your partner never suspects what's about to happen.

Choosing Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach

After discussing several Southern California proposal locations, we ultimately chose Crescent Bay Park in Laguna Beach.

Why?

Because Crescent Bay Park offers nearly everything couples look for when planning a proposal:

• Incredible Pacific Ocean views

• Elevated coastal bluffs

• Beautiful golden-hour light

• Easy transition to the beach afterward

Arnold also wanted something more elevated than a traditional proposal.

Memorial Day Weekend... What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Holiday weekends and coastal California.

Most photographers immediately think:

Traffic.

Crowds.

Parking.

Chaos.

And honestly...

They'd be right.

We arrived early—as we always do—but still spent nearly an hour searching for parking.

Once we finally found a space, our vehicle ended up nearly half a mile away from the proposal site.

That meant multiple trips carrying the arch, flowers, décor, equipment, cameras, and everything else needed to create the experience Arnold envisioned.

Would we do it again?

Without hesitation.

Because while most people only see the final photographs...

We get to experience everything that happens before that first shutter click.

The Moment Everything Came Together

Once everything was set up, all that was left was to wait.

Arnold arrived exactly as planned.

Nearby, family members quietly hid out of sight, waiting for the big moment.

The couple walked directly toward the arch.

We began photographing.

Arnold got down on one knee.

She said yes.

Almost instantly, cheers erupted from family members nearby.

The surprise had worked perfectly.

After celebrating at the proposal site, we walked down to Crescent Bay Beach for a short engagement session.

As the sun slowly disappeared behind the Pacific, we captured relaxed portraits together along the shoreline.

One of our favorite images happened completely naturally.

The two of them stretched their arms out like airplanes, laughing as they "flew" together across the sand.

It's playful.

It's authentic.

And somehow it perfectly symbolizes what engagement feels like.

Not just saying yes.

But flying into whatever comes next—together.

With less than 10 days to plan, everything had to be intentional, efficient, and executed without guesswork.

Jeremy initially wanted something simple, something meaningful. We had a classic picnic setup in mind—something we’ve done before—but this time, we wanted to push it further. Something more refined. More elevated. More “them.”
