From a Phone Call to a Floral-Filled Yes | Austin & Koko’s Laguna Beach Surprise Proposal
Some surprise proposals start with a location. Others start with a vision.
Austin and Koko’s Laguna Beach proposal started with a phone call that felt more like catching up with an old friend.
And by the time their big day arrived, our car was filled to the brim with white flowers, we’d spent hours preparing arrangements, and we were about to bring one of our most ambitious proposal setups to life overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Here’s how it all came together.
What started as a simple phone call with Austin became an unforgettable oceanfront proposal surrounded by flowers, thoughtful details, and one very important question. It Started With an Inquiry in Early September
In early September, Austin reached out through our online inquiry form asking if we were available on September 20 to photograph his surprise proposal to his longtime girlfriend, Koko, in Laguna Beach, California.
We connected with him right away and jumped on a call to talk through everything.
Austin was excited. He already had an idea of what he wanted, but he needed some help putting the finishing pieces together.
We talked about possible proposal locations around Laguna Beach, decorations, timing, photography, and how to make the entire experience feel natural without giving away the surprise.
By the time we hung up, it honestly felt like we'd just finished talking to a longtime friend.
And that's one of our favorite parts of this business.
We get to meet people during one of the most exciting moments of their lives, help them turn an idea into something real, and sometimes build friendships along the way.
Finding the Perfect Laguna Beach Proposal Location
Austin knew he wanted something romantic.
He imagined proposing to Koko overlooking the ocean, surrounded by Laguna Beach's beautiful coastal cliffs, with elegant white floral arrangements framing the moment.
We loved the vision.
Laguna Beach offers some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Southern California, but choosing the right proposal location involves more than finding a pretty viewpoint.
We needed to consider the ocean backdrop, available space, lighting, how Austin and Koko would approach the setup, and whether the floral arrangement could be placed there appropriately.
After our call, we started sending Austin ideas.
We went back and forth, discussing the location, reviewing inspiration, and refining the details until we were all happy with the plan.
We wanted the setup to complement the natural scenery rather than compete with it.
The Pacific Ocean and Laguna Beach cliffs would already provide an incredible backdrop.
Our job was to bring Austin's vision to life.
Designing Our First Large-Scale White Floral Proposal Arrangement
Here's something we haven't shared much about this particular proposal.
This was our first time creating a floral arrangement on this scale.
We'd worked with flowers and proposal decorations before, but Austin's vision called for something bigger.
And we wanted to get it right.
We created mockups of different arrangements, shared ideas with Austin, and worked together until we finalized a design he loved.
Then came the part that most people never see.
Learning how to prepare and transport that many flowers.
We spent hours watching videos, researching techniques, and figuring out how to keep the arrangements looking beautiful from preparation through the actual proposal.
How should we trim the stems?
How should we arrange everything in the vases?
How much water would we need?
How could we transport everything safely?
And most importantly, how were we going to keep all those flowers fresh during an already packed day of photoshoots?
We had a lot to figure out.
But that's also what makes growing Last Minute Photoshoot exciting for us.
Every new experience pushes us to learn something we didn't know how to do before.
The Night Before: Searching for Flowers Across Southern California
The day before Austin and Koko's proposal, Stephanie and I spent much of our time driving around picking up flowers.
And not just from one place.
We had to visit multiple locations to gather enough flowers to complete the arrangement.
Once we finally had everything, we headed home and started preparing.
Trimming stems.
Sorting flowers.
Arranging bouquets.
Preparing vases.
Making sure everything would be ready for the following day.
It was a lot more work than simply ordering flowers and showing up at a proposal location.
But we knew what Austin was trusting us with.
This wasn't just another photoshoot.
This was the moment he was going to ask Koko to marry him.
And we wanted everything to look the way he'd imagined.
Proposal Day: A Car Full of Flowers and a 7 AM Start
The next morning, we were out the door by 7 AM.
And when we say our car was full of flowers, we mean it.
There were flowers everywhere.
We had to carefully organize the arrangements, make sure nothing tipped over, and constantly spray the flowers to help keep them fresh.
The challenging part?
Austin and Koko's proposal wasn't our only photoshoot that day.
We had an early session scheduled before heading to Laguna Beach.
That meant the flowers were coming along for a very long day.
We finished our morning photoshoot, took a much-needed break, and checked in with Austin to make sure everything was still going according to plan.
Then, around 4 PM, we headed toward Laguna Beach to begin setting up.
The entire drive, we were thinking about the same thing.
We couldn't wait to see how everything would look once it was finally put together overlooking the ocean.
Bringing the Floral Proposal Setup to Life
Once we arrived, it was time to turn all the planning, mockups and preparation into something real.
We unloaded the flowers and carefully began assembling the arrangements.
The white florals looked beautiful against the coastal scenery.
The cliffs.
The ocean.
The natural light.
Everything started coming together.
After days of planning and preparation, seeing the final setup in place was an incredible feeling.
And once we finished, we sent Austin a quick text.
We were ready.
Now all we had to do was wait.
Austin & Koko's Laguna Beach Surprise Proposal
There's always a special feeling during those final few minutes before a surprise proposal.
The planning is finished.
The decorations are in place.
The cameras are ready.
And the person who's about to be proposed to has no idea what's coming.
When Austin and Koko approached the floral setup, we played their song.
That was our cue to let the moment unfold.
Austin led Koko toward the flowers with the Pacific Ocean stretching out behind them.
From there, we stepped back and let the two of them have their moment.
No interruptions.
No complicated instructions.
Just Austin, Koko, their favorite song, and a beautiful oceanfront setting in Laguna Beach.
We quietly photographed the proposal as it happened, capturing the emotions and reactions they'd be able to look back on for years.
All the preparation, flower shopping, arranging, transporting, coordinating and waiting had led to this.
And seeing Austin's vision come together made every bit of that work worth it.
What Austin & Koko's Proposal Taught Us
Looking back, this proposal was a milestone for Stephanie and me.
Not because it was the biggest setup we'd ever photographed, but because it challenged us to do something new.
We'd never prepared a floral arrangement of this size before.
We had to learn how to source, prepare, transport and assemble everything while working around an already busy photography schedule.
There were long hours, a car packed with flowers, and plenty of little details to figure out.
But that's the kind of challenge we enjoy.
We don't want to simply show up, take photographs and leave.
We want to help people create experiences they'll remember.
And sometimes that means spending the night before a proposal trimming flowers in our home.
Sometimes it means leaving at 7 AM with a car full of arrangements.
Sometimes it means answering messages between photoshoots and checking that every last detail is ready.
Austin trusted us with a huge moment in his and Koko's lives.
We're grateful he did.
And we're especially grateful that what started as a quick inquiry in early September turned into an experience that felt like helping an old friend.
