Stone originally contacted us in early July about photographing a surprise proposal somewhere in San Diego on August 10.
They were traveling from Arizona, he wanted us to capture the proposal itself, and he needed some help figuring out how to actually pull off the surprise.
His biggest request was simple:
Samantha wanted something near the beach or along the cliffs, preferably somewhere that could feel private.
We had about a month.
So we got to work.
What started as a plan for the cliffs of La Jolla eventually became something much more personal—a sunset proposal at Windansea Beach surrounded by waves, rocks, and the green-covered coastline Samantha already loved.

Planning a Destination Proposal From Arizona
Planning a proposal from another state can feel overwhelming.
You can look through photographs.
Search Google Maps.
Watch videos.
Read blogs.
But it's difficult to understand how a location actually feels until you're standing there.
Stone and Samantha were coming from Arizona, so part of our job was helping Stone narrow down San Diego's coastline without requiring him to figure everything out himself.
We sent him several options, including:
La Jolla Gliderport
Sunset Cliffs
Del Mar
Oceanside Pier
Each location gave him something different.
The Gliderport offered dramatic cliffs, open Pacific Ocean views, and paragliders.
Sunset Cliffs had rugged coastline and classic San Diego sunset scenery.
Del Mar offered a more traditional coastal experience.
Oceanside gave him the beach and pier environment.
After looking through our galleries and comparing the different locations, Stone chose:
La Jolla Gliderport.
We were excited.
We've photographed a lot of proposals there, and there's a reason we keep going back.
The sunsets can be incredible.
The cliffs create an enormous backdrop.
And watching paragliders float above the coastline while you're waiting to ask one of the biggest questions of your life is pretty hard to beat.
At least, we thought the location was settled.
Once We Had the Location, We Started Building the Plan
Choosing a proposal location is only the beginning.
Once Stone decided on the Gliderport, we started working through the details.
We sent over our proposal planning information, including a quick checklist, helpful FYI information for proposal day, and a tentative timeline for how everything would happen.
We still had plenty of time before August 10, so there was no need to rush.
We could dial everything in.
Where Stone and Samantha would arrive.
Where we'd be positioned.
How we'd remain discreet.
What his cue would be.
When the proposal should happen.
And what we'd do immediately afterward.
Then, a few weeks before proposal day, Stone reached out with a question.
Were we familiar with Windansea Beach?
We were.
And suddenly the plan changed.
Why We Changed the Proposal From La Jolla Gliderport to Windansea Beach
Stone told us that Samantha had mentioned how much she loved the green algae-covered rocks at Windansea.
That changed the conversation.
Windansea Beach has a completely different look from the Gliderport.
Instead of standing high above the Pacific on dramatic cliffs, you're down beside the water.
There are waves.
Sand.
Sandstone formations.
Surfers.
The historic Surf Shack.
And rocks along the shoreline that can develop vivid green growth in areas regularly exposed to moisture and ocean conditions.
Tides and surf play a major role in what the shoreline looks like on any particular day, which is one reason we always recommend checking conditions before planning a Windansea proposal.
But the biggest reason to change locations had nothing to do with photography.
Samantha already loved it.
That's more important.
Choose a Proposal Location That Means Something
It's easy to search:
"Best places to propose in San Diego."
You'll get plenty of beautiful locations.
But the most photographed location isn't automatically the right one.
When Stone told us Samantha specifically loved something about Windansea, that immediately gave the location more meaning.
The Gliderport might have offered bigger cliffs.
Another beach might have been quieter.
Another location might have been easier to access.
But Windansea had something none of them did.
A connection to Samantha.
So we pivoted.
The Gliderport plan was out.
Windansea Beach was in.
Why Windansea Beach Works for a Surprise Proposal
Windansea is one of La Jolla's most recognizable beaches, but it doesn't feel like a manicured resort.
It's a real San Diego surf beach.
You'll see surfers in the water.
People sitting on rocks watching sunset.
Couples walking the shoreline.
Locals hanging out.
And the historic Surf Shack overlooking the beach.
The rocky coastline creates a lot of variety for photographs, especially when the tide and surf cooperate.
For Stone, it gave him the beach proposal Samantha wanted while still offering the dramatic coastal scenery he originally liked about the Gliderport.
Proposal Day: Meeting Stone Before Samantha Arrived
Whenever possible, we recommend doing an in-person walkthrough before a surprise proposal.
Even if we've already sent:
GPS pins.
Photos.
Maps.
Timelines.
Instructions.
And proposal cues.
There's something different about physically standing in the location together.
Stone was able to get away from Samantha for about 30 to 40 minutes by telling her he needed to pick up some supplies.
That gave us enough time.
We met him at Windansea earlier that day.
And almost immediately, it felt like we were meeting up with an old friend.
Stone was incredibly easy to get along with.
That's something we appreciate about this work.
Proposal planning can be stressful.
But once we get to know the person we're helping, the process becomes much more relaxed.
We try to approach our clients the way we'd approach helping a friend.
Because for a few weeks—or sometimes only a few hours—that's basically what we're doing.
Walking Windansea Before the Proposal
The three of us walked the beach together.
We checked the shoreline.
Walked around the rocks.
Looked at the famous Surf Shack.
Watched where people were gathering.
Studied the light.
And started mapping out exactly how the proposal would happen.
Where would Stone stand?
Where would Samantha be facing?
Where would we position ourselves?
How could we follow them without making Samantha suspicious?
What would happen immediately afterward?
These might sound like tiny details.
But when you only get one chance to capture someone's genuine reaction, tiny details matter.
Why We Recommend a Proposal Walkthrough
If you're proposing somewhere unfamiliar and you have an opportunity to meet your photographer beforehand, we'd recommend doing it.
A walkthrough gives you a chance to physically see:
Where you're going.
Where you'll stop.
Where your photographer will be.
Which direction you'll face.
What the background looks like.
Where family or surprises are hidden.
And most importantly:
What happens next.
You don't want to arrive at proposal time and suddenly realize you don't remember which rock you're supposed to stand beside.
The more we can remove those questions beforehand, the more you can focus on what you're actually there to do.
What Stone Said After the Proposal

Instead, everything would be waiting after she said yes.
The Plan Was Simple
By the time we finished the walkthrough, everyone knew their role.
Stone and Samantha would arrive together.
We'd already be nearby.
We'd keep our distance and blend into the beach.
Stone would guide Samantha toward the predetermined proposal area.
Then he'd give us our cue:
A thumbs-up.
That would tell us:
It's happening. Get ready.
Simple.
At least on paper.
Proposal Plans Don't Always Go Exactly According to Plan
When proposal time arrived, we spotted Stone and Samantha coming toward the beach.
We kept our distance.
Followed discreetly.
And waited.
They walked toward the location we'd mapped out earlier.
We watched Stone.
Waiting for the thumbs-up.
Except...
There was no thumbs-up.
With everything happening and all the emotions of the moment, Stone forgot.
Completely understandable.
Fortunately, we were already watching closely.
This Is Why We Don't Depend on One Cue
Proposal cues are helpful.
But we never want the entire plan depending on one signal.
People get nervous.
They forget.
Plans change.
Someone walks into the frame.
Your partner unexpectedly turns around.
You decide:
This is the moment.
Stone didn't give us the thumbs-up.
But the second we saw his body language change and watched him begin getting into position, we knew.
This was it.
We immediately jumped into action.
Video started rolling.
Cameras came up.
And Stone turned toward Samantha.
The Moment Stone Asked Samantha to Marry Him
After weeks of planning...
Changing locations...
Comparing San Diego beaches...
Walking Windansea earlier that day...
Hiding flowers and wine...

None of that mattered anymore.
Stone got down on one knee.

Everything else is simply how we helped them get there.
Give Them a Moment
After the proposal, we don't immediately want to turn everything into a photoshoot.
Something huge just happened.
Take it in.
Hug.
Kiss.
Look at the ring.
Laugh.
Cry.
Whatever happens naturally.
Those first few minutes after a proposal often produce some of our favorite photographs because nobody is thinking about posing yet.
They're simply experiencing it.
We kept photographing while Stone and Samantha celebrated.
Then we brought out the flowers and wine he'd hidden with us earlier.
The surprise wasn't quite finished yet.
Chasing the Last Light Around Windansea
After the proposal, we spent roughly the next hour exploring Windansea with them.
This is one reason we love photographing proposals near sunset.
Once the pressure of keeping the surprise is gone, everything changes.
Stone could finally relax.
Samantha knew why we'd been lurking around the beach.
And now we could just have fun.
We moved around the shoreline.
Photographed near the rocks.
Used the ocean as our background.
Worked with the remaining sunset.
And chased the light until we couldn't anymore.
What started as a request to simply capture the proposal became an entire engagement session beside the Pacific.
Why Windansea Worked Better Than the Original Plan
Would the La Jolla Gliderport have been beautiful?
Absolutely.
We love photographing proposals there.
But looking back, Windansea was the better choice for Stone and Samantha.
That's an important distinction.
It wasn't better because Windansea is objectively better than the Gliderport.
It was better because Samantha had already talked about loving the beach.
The green-covered rocks caught her attention.
The location meant something to her before she had any idea she'd eventually become engaged there.
That gave Stone's proposal another layer of intention.
And that's exactly what we'd encourage other couples to think about.
Don't Be Afraid to Change Your Proposal Location
There's a tendency when planning something important to think:
We've already decided. We can't change it now.
You can.
We've changed proposal locations because of:
Weather.
Wildfires.
Tides.
Crowds.
Permits.
Accessibility.
Family logistics.
Personal preferences.
And sometimes simply because we discovered somewhere that made more sense.
Changing the plan isn't failure.
Sometimes the pivot becomes the best part of the story.
Our Biggest Takeaway From Stone & Samantha's Proposal
Stone originally came to us needing help finding somewhere in San Diego to propose.
A month later, we were standing at Windansea Beach watching him ask Samantha to marry him at a location she already loved.

We especially recommend Windansea if you want:

About Windansea Beach
Windansea Beach sits along Neptune Place in La Jolla and is one of the area's best-known surfing beaches.
The coastline combines sand, sandstone formations, reefs, bluffs, waves, and the historic Surf Shack.
Windansea also has a long connection to San Diego surf culture. The beach is known for its reef break and attracts experienced local surfers throughout the year.
That's part of the character of this location.
Don't expect an empty, perfectly manicured resort beach.
You'll probably see surfboards.
People sitting on the rocks.
Locals watching the waves.
Couples enjoying sunset.
And plenty of surfers in the water.
For us, that's part of what makes Windansea feel like La Jolla.
Where Is Windansea Beach?
Windansea is located along Neptune Place near Bonair Street in La Jolla, California. The beach extends north and south from this area, with the famous Surf Shack and primary surf area nearby.
If you're coming from elsewhere in San Diego, you'll generally make your way toward La Jolla Boulevard before heading west toward Neptune Place.
For a surprise proposal, we'd recommend saving your exact meeting point or GPS pin beforehand rather than simply typing "Windansea Beach" into your phone and assuming everyone will arrive at the same place.
That's especially important when your photographer needs to remain discreet.
Parking at Windansea Beach
This is something we'd plan for.
There is a very small parking area along Neptune Place around the Bonair Street area, but don't build your proposal timeline around getting one of those spaces.
A local Windansea guide counts only about 16 spaces in the small lot. Nearby residential street parking is another option, although finding a space can take longer during busy periods. (Go Visit San Diego)
Our recommendation:
Arrive early.
If your proposal is at 6:30 PM, don't pull into La Jolla at 6:20 PM.
Give yourself enough time to:
Park.
Walk.
Text your photographer if necessary.
Settle down.
And casually make your way toward the proposal location.
The last thing we want is someone walking toward one of the biggest moments of their life while repeatedly checking the clock.
Check the Tide Before You Propose
This is one of our biggest Windansea tips:
Check the tide report.
Windansea's beach and rocky shoreline can look very different depending on the tide and surf.
Lower water can expose more shoreline and rocky areas.
Higher tides and larger surf can reduce usable space and change how easily you can move around parts of the beach.
That's important for both the proposal and your engagement photographs afterward.
You can check Windansea tide predictions through Surfline's Windansea Tide Calendar.
Surfline's Windansea tide information uses the nearby La Jolla/Scripps Pier tide station and displays predicted high and low tides along with sunrise and sunset information.
We'd check it while planning and then check it again as proposal day approaches.
Don't assume the beach you saw in someone's photograph will look exactly the same when you arrive.
The ocean decides that.
Windansea Is a Surf Beach
Windansea isn't simply a pretty backdrop.
It's a legitimate surf spot.
San Diego's tourism information describes Windansea as a well-known reef break that attracts local surfers, and the break can be crowded when conditions are good.
For proposal photography, we actually like this.
Surfers can give photographs a sense of place.
A board under someone's arm in the distance.
People sitting on the rocks watching the waves.
Surfers waiting beyond the break.
It feels like Southern California.
But it also means we need to work around other people rather than expecting the entire beach to belong to us.
When Is the Best Time to Propose at Windansea?
For us?
Sunset.
The sunsets here can be unreal.
Because you're looking directly toward the Pacific, you can get beautiful evening light across the ocean, rocks, sand, and shoreline.
We generally like having the actual proposal happen before the sun completely disappears.
That leaves enough time afterward for:
The initial reaction.
Hugs.
Ring photographs.
A few candid moments.
Then a short engagement session while we chase the remaining light.
We don't want the proposal happening at the exact minute listed as sunset.
By then, we're already losing valuable photography time.
How Early Before Sunset Should You Propose?
A good starting point is often around 30 to 60 minutes before sunset, depending on the season, tide, weather, marine layer, and the length of your photography session.
For example, if we're planning a one-hour proposal session, we might have the proposal happen earlier and spend the remaining time moving around Windansea for engagement portraits.
Every proposal is different.
That's why we prefer building timelines around the specific date rather than using one generic time for every client.
What About the Marine Layer?
This is coastal San Diego.
Sometimes you're expecting an explosive orange sunset and the marine layer rolls in.
That doesn't mean your photographs are ruined.
Cloud cover can create soft, even lighting that's beautiful for portraits.
What we'd avoid is planning the emotional experience around one exact weather outcome.
You're proposing beside the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla.
If we get an incredible sunset?
Even better.
Where Should You Actually Propose at Windansea?
We wouldn't choose one universal spot.
Conditions change.
The tide changes.
The number of people changes.
Surf changes.
And light changes throughout the year.
Instead, we'd scout the beach and look for a location that gives us:
A clean ocean background

Wear Shoes You Can Actually Walk In
Windansea isn't a flat hotel lawn.
You'll encounter sand.
Rocks.
Uneven surfaces.
Steps and beach access.
Depending on the tide, moving around may require more care.
If your partner wants to wear heels for dinner afterward, that's completely fine.
But we'd think carefully about footwear for the beach portion.

La Jolla Boulevard has cafés, restaurants, shops, and neighborhood businesses near the Windansea/Bird Rock area.
For something casual close to Windansea, The Promiscuous Fork sits on La Jolla Boulevard, while Rosemonts Cafe and Café Vahik are nearby options for coffee or something earlier in the day.
That gives you an easy cover story:
Spend time around La Jolla.
Then suggest watching sunset at Windansea.
Your partner doesn't need to know what happens next.
Where Should You Celebrate Afterward?
After the proposal, you can stay around La Jolla and turn the evening into a complete date.
For a more celebratory dinner, options farther north around the Village include Georges at the Cove and Duke's La Jolla.
