If your schedule allows it, we'd strongly consider Monday through Thursday.
A weekday generally gives us a better chance of dealing with fewer people than a beautiful Saturday evening.
It can also make parking and discreet photographer positioning easier.
If you're traveling into San Diego specifically for your proposal, having flexibility with the date can be incredibly valuable.
Windansea Has One Major Variable: The Tide
This is probably the biggest logistical difference between these locations.
If you're considering Windansea, check the tide.
And don't check it once three weeks before the proposal and forget about it.
Check while planning.
Then check again as the date approaches.
Higher water and surf can change how much shoreline is comfortably accessible.
The rocks can look different.
Your favorite spot from somebody else's photographs might not look exactly the same when you arrive.

At the Gliderport, we're still paying attention to weather and coastal conditions, but we're not planning the actual proposal around usable beach area.

The best cover story is usually something you'd realistically do together anyway.
What About a Proposal Cue?
We often build a discreet cue into the plan.

But Stone taught us another lesson.
He forgot his thumbs-up.

If you're able to meet us before proposal time, we love doing walkthroughs.
Stone had about 30–40 minutes away from Samantha on proposal day.
We used that window to meet him at Windansea.
We walked the beach.
Checked the rocks.
Looked at the Surf Shack.
Mapped the proposal location.
Planned our positioning.

For destination couples especially, that can remove a huge amount of uncertainty.

Actually standing where you're going to propose is better.
Which Is Better for a Signature Yes Floral Setup?
We'd generally start the conversation with:
La Jolla Gliderport.

The open landscape can create a beautiful contrast between a romantic floral setup and the dramatic cliffs behind it.
Windansea, meanwhile, is naturally beautiful without much added décor.
For many Windansea proposals, we'd lean into the environment:
Ocean.
Rocks.
Sunset.
Flowers afterward.
Simple.
Before planning any arch, large sign, furniture, picnic, candles, or other setup at either public location, however, we'd verify the current rules for the exact activity and area.
Which Is Easier for Parking?
Neither is a location where we'd recommend arriving at the last second.
At Windansea, parking close to the beach is limited, so neighboring streets can become part of the plan.
At the Gliderport, the parking situation feels completely different, but you may still have a walk between your car and the exact proposal location.
And if we're bringing décor?
That walk feels considerably longer.
Our rule for both:
Build parking into the timeline.
If you're supposed to propose at 6:30 PM, don't plan to arrive at 6:25.
Which Is Better for Accessibility?
This depends on the exact spot.
Windansea involves beach access, sand, rocks, and potentially uneven or slippery surfaces.
The Gliderport involves dirt areas, trails, uneven terrain, and proximity to cliffs.
Neither should automatically be treated like a flat paved park.
If your partner—or anyone joining afterward—has mobility considerations, tell us early.
That can completely change which location we'd recommend.
Which Is Better for Families?
We'd probably give the Gliderport a slight advantage, depending on where exactly you're planning to propose.
There's generally more open space to work with than on sections of Windansea's shoreline.
That can make hiding or positioning family easier.
But we've learned something important after planning a lot of proposals:
Family members need instructions too.
Where should they stand?
When should they arrive?
When can they come out?
And please...
Don't all stare directly at the couple while holding your phones.
Nothing says "something is about to happen" quite like six relatives pretending not to watch you.
What About the Marine Layer?
Welcome to La Jolla.
You can plan for sunset.
You cannot order one.
Some evenings explode with warm color.
Others turn soft and cloudy.
We've photographed proposals in both.
Marine layer doesn't automatically mean bad photographs.
Cloud cover can create beautiful soft light and eliminate some of the harsh contrast we'd otherwise have to work around.
We'd rather have a meaningful proposal under cloudy skies than postpone your entire experience chasing a weather app's idea of a perfect sunset.

Crescent Bay gives you another classic Laguna Beach experience.
The cove, beach, cliffs, and nearby overlook create several possibilities depending on the proposal.
We've used the area for both simple proposals and more involved setups.
One thing we always think about here is how the couple will approach.
You don't want the person being surprised to see the photographer, family, or décor too early.
A beautiful proposal location still needs a believable entrance.

Heisler Park is another strong option if you want ocean views without committing to a traditional beach proposal.
You'll find landscaped paths, overlooks, coastal scenery, and several places where the Pacific becomes the background.

La Jolla feels different.
Where Laguna Beach can feel intimate and tucked away, La Jolla can feel huge.
The coastline opens up.
Cliffs stretch into the distance.
Waves crash below.
At the Gliderport, paragliders can drift overhead while the Pacific stretches all the way to the horizon.
Then drive farther into La Jolla and the scenery changes again.

The La Jolla Gliderport has become one of our most photographed proposal locations.
And for good reason.
You have dramatic cliffs.
Wide-open Pacific Ocean views.
Paragliders.
Sunsets.
Coastal trails.
And plenty of space to create completely different engagement photographs after the proposal.
We've photographed proposals here with months of preparation.
We've planned them with only a few days' notice.
We've used discreet cover stories.
We've incorporated floral arches.
We've helped clients navigate exact GPS locations and proposal cues.
And despite returning again and again, every proposal still looks a little different.
La Jolla Coastal Trail
For couples who want something less centered around the Gliderport, the La Jolla coastline offers beautiful walking areas and overlooks.
This can work particularly well for a proposal built naturally into a walk.
Your partner doesn't necessarily need to know you're headed toward a specific "proposal location."
You're simply exploring La Jolla together.
Then, at the right place and time, everything changes.
La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove offers another completely different environment.
You get ocean views, rocky coastline, walkways, coastal scenery, and easy access to more of La Jolla afterward.
The tradeoff?
It can get busy.
That's where timing becomes important.
Sometimes the best proposal isn't at the most famous viewpoint.
It's 100 feet away where fewer people are standing.
Windansea Beach
Windansea is worth considering if you want the beach experience of Laguna but still want to stay in La Jolla.
The rocky coastline and surf create a very different look from the elevated Gliderport.
It's a good reminder that choosing La Jolla doesn't automatically mean proposing on a cliff.
You still have beach options.
Why We'd Choose La Jolla
La Jolla works especially well when someone tells us:
"I want something dramatic."
The cliffs naturally create scale.
The ocean feels enormous.
The paragliders at the Gliderport add movement.
And because there are so many different environments around La Jolla, it's easier to create a proposal gallery with multiple looks.

We'd start with Laguna Beach.
Victoria Beach, Crescent Bay, and other parts of the Laguna coastline give you several beautiful options.
That doesn't mean La Jolla doesn't have great beaches.
It does.
But beach proposals are one of Laguna's biggest strengths.
Which Is Better for a Cliffside Proposal?
La Jolla.
This is where locations like the Gliderport shine.
Standing above the Pacific creates a completely different perspective from proposing directly on the beach.
You can see miles of coastline.
The horizon becomes part of the composition.
Paragliders may be flying overhead.
And during sunset, the entire sky can become your backdrop.
Which Is Better for Privacy?
It depends more on the exact location and timing than the city.
This is important.
Neither Laguna Beach nor La Jolla should automatically be considered private.
These are popular Southern California destinations.
A famous viewpoint at sunset on a Saturday can be packed.
But move to a different part of the coastline.
Choose a weekday.
Adjust the proposal time.
Walk a little farther.
Suddenly the experience can feel completely different.
That's why we don't choose proposal locations based solely on a Google image.
We think about how the location actually behaves.
Which Is Better on a Weekday?
Honestly?
Both.
Whenever possible, we love weekday proposals.
You're generally dealing with fewer beachgoers, fewer families, less parking pressure, and fewer people accidentally walking into the background at the exact moment someone gets down on one knee.
A Tuesday sunset and Saturday sunset can feel like two completely different locations.
If your travel schedule is flexible, we'd seriously consider proposing Monday through Thursday.
Which Is Better for Sunset?
This one is a tie.
Both Laguna Beach and La Jolla face the Pacific and can produce incredible sunset conditions.
But sunset isn't only about what time the sun disappears.
We also think about:
Where will the light hit?
Will cliffs block it early?
What's the marine layer doing?
How much engagement-session time do we want afterward?
How long will it take the couple to reach the location?
If sunset is at 7:30 PM, we generally don't want you arriving at 7:28 PM.
We want room to breathe.
What About the Marine Layer?
Welcome to the Southern California coast.
Sometimes you plan a glowing sunset and the marine layer has other ideas.
That's normal.
Cloudy coastal conditions aren't automatically bad for photography.
Soft clouds can create beautiful, even light and allow us to photograph in directions that would otherwise be difficult with harsh sun.
The key is not building your entire proposal around the expectation of one exact sunset.
Build it around the experience.
If the sky explodes with color?
Amazing.
If it doesn't?
You're still getting engaged beside the Pacific Ocean.
That's a pretty good evening.
Which Is Better for Engagement Photos Afterward?
We'd give a slight advantage to La Jolla.
Not because Laguna isn't beautiful.
It absolutely is.
But La Jolla gives us an incredible amount of variety.
At and around the Gliderport, for example, we can work with:
Cliffs.
Ocean.
Trails.
Open sky.
Paragliders.
Coastal vegetation.
Sunset.
And wide landscape compositions.
Laguna gives us a different kind of variety:
Sand.
Rock formations.
Coves.
Cliffs.
Parks.
Palm trees.
Pathways.
The choice comes down to whether you want rugged/adventurous or romantic/coastal.
Which Is Better for Proposal Décor?
This is where we'd avoid giving one blanket answer.
The exact location matters more than whether you choose Laguna Beach or La Jolla.
Rules surrounding commercial activity, photography, structures, décor, flowers, candles, arches, and reserved areas can vary by property and jurisdiction and can change over time.
Some locations may work beautifully for a floral setup.
Others are better left completely natural.
Before planning an arch, picnic, candles, large letters, or other décor, verify the current rules for the exact location.
Don't buy everything first and ask permission later.
Which Is Easier for Parking?
Neither destination wins every time.
Popular coastal locations can be challenging.
At La Jolla Gliderport, we've often used the dirt parking areas and then walked toward our selected proposal location.
That can mean carrying gear and décor farther than expected.
In Laguna Beach, parking availability varies significantly by location, time, and season.
Our biggest recommendation:
Don't make parking an afterthought.
If your proposal is at 6:30 PM, your arrival time isn't 6:25.
Give yourself room for traffic, parking, walking, and the unexpected.
What About Tides?
If you're proposing directly on the beach, tides matter.
A lot.
This is particularly important at locations with rocks, coves, narrow beaches, or landmarks that become harder to access during higher tides.
We've learned to look at tide conditions as part of the planning process rather than simply checking sunset.
A beach can look completely different six hours later.
If the proposal depends on reaching one exact section of shoreline, check the conditions beforehand.
Which Is Better for a Destination Proposal?
This is close.
If you're building an entire San Diego vacation around the proposal, we'd lean toward La Jolla.
You can combine the proposal with other San Diego experiences, restaurants, beaches, Balboa Park, Coronado, downtown, and the surrounding coastline.
If you're imagining a quieter romantic coastal getaway, we'd lean toward Laguna Beach.
Laguna has that smaller beach-town feeling.
Walk around.
Have dinner.
Explore the coastline.
Slow things down.

They need to understand that staring directly at the couple while holding their phones is usually a giveaway.
We've hidden family and friends at proposal locations before and brought them out immediately after the yes.
That can give you the best of both worlds:
A private proposal followed by a family celebration.
What If You Want the Photographer Completely Hidden?
Again, both work.
Sometimes we stay at a distance.
Sometimes we blend in with tourists.
Sometimes we're pretending to photograph each other.
Sometimes we approach and ask the couple if they'd like a photograph.
Sometimes we simply wait at a predetermined GPS pin.
The right cover story depends on the location.
At a busy coastal destination, hiding in plain sight can actually be easier than trying to physically hide.

What most people don't see are the days and weeks leading up to those moments.
Before every proposal, wedding, or engagement session, there are phone calls, text messages, planning sessions, location scouting, timeline creation, GPS pins, backup plans, restaurant recommendations, and countless conversations behind the scenes.
Sometimes we're helping a client choose between Laguna Beach and La Jolla.
Other times we're scouting a new location we've never photographed before.
Sometimes we're helping someone figure out how to propose without their partner finding out.
The work starts long before the camera ever comes out.
That's how we prepare.
And although we prepare as much as we can, every once in a while something happens that reminds you that not everything is within your control.
Last week was one of those weeks.
Behind every proposal, wedding, and engagement session is a story most people never see. This week included four surprise proposals, one wedding, one engagement session, thousands of photos, countless miles on the road, and a camera failure that happened minutes before a proposal. It was a reminder that photography isn't just about taking beautiful photos—it's about staying calm when things go sideways, adapting on the fly, and doing everything possible to deliver for the people who trusted us with some of the biggest moments of their lives.

The Proposal That Almost Didn't Happen
A few minutes before we were scheduled to photograph a surprise proposal at Seal Rock in La Jolla, our Sony A7 III stopped working.
No warning.
No strange noises.
Nothing.
Just a black screen.
The shutter was completely closed.
We removed the lens.
Removed the battery.
Removed the SD cards.
Waited.
Put everything back together.
Tried again.
Nothing.
Repeated the process.
Still nothing.
The black screen of death said it all.
If you're a photographer, you probably know the feeling.
Your stomach drops.
Your heart starts racing.
Your mind immediately starts trying to solve a problem that doesn't seem to have a solution.
The worst part?
We didn't have a backup camera.
That's on us.
We had photographed multiple sessions leading up to that day and had tested the camera beforehand. Everything was working perfectly.
Until it wasn't.
The Text Message Nobody Wants To Send
At first, I texted our client:
"Hey, give us a few minutes. We're having some technical difficulties."
He replied:
"No problem."
One minute turned into five.
Five minutes turned into ten.
Ten turned into twenty.
Then the text came:
"Are we good?"
I remember staring at my phone wondering how to even explain what was happening.
Finally, I sent the message.
"Hey, I'm not really sure how to say this, so I'm just going to be blunt. Our camera isn't working. We can photograph your proposal on our iPhone, and we'll offer a full refund."
A few moments later he replied:
"Okay. We'll figure out the refund later."
Then he walked out of the restaurant.
Our First Proposal Shot on an iPhone
This was a first for us.
As the client made his way toward Seal Rock, we positioned ourselves from a distance and started photographing with our iPhone.
We stayed undercover.
We blended into the environment.
And when the moment arrived, we captured it.
He got down on one knee.
She said yes.
The proposal happened.
The story continued.
Afterward, we all laughed about it.
But if we're being honest?
Steph and I were crushed inside.
We felt like we had let our clients down.
As photographers, you take pride in showing up prepared.
When something outside of your control affects a client experience, it's hard not to take it personally.
But we still had a job to do.
So we smiled.
We stayed positive.
We focused on creating the best experience possible.
Because at that point, the proposal wasn't about us.
It was about them.
We Found a Solution
After talking everything through, we gave our clients a few options.
A full refund.
Credit toward their wedding.
Or an engagement session while they were still in town.
They chose the engagement session.
A few days later we met up again and photographed their engagement photos.
Looking back, we're grateful the experience happened.
Not because it was fun.
It definitely wasn't.
But because it reminded us of something important.
Problems happen.
Equipment fails.
Plans change.
What matters most is how you respond when things don't go according to plan.
The client kept telling us:
"It's about the story."
"It's about the experience."
And honestly, he was right.
We sure do have some amazing clients.
The Lesson We Learned
The moment we got home, we started looking for another camera body.
Now we have two cameras.
And moving forward, we'll always have two cameras with us.
Some lessons are expensive.
Some lessons are stressful.
Some lessons become turning points.
This was one of those lessons.
And That Was Just the Beginning of the Week
Believe it or not, the camera failure happened at the beginning of the week.
After that, we still had:

A scouting trip to Lake Arrowhead for an upcoming proposal
Countless client calls, texts, timelines, and planning sessions
It was one of the busiest weeks we've had in a while.
And one of the most memorable.
