Worth the Wait | Sarkis & Tamara’s SkyPark Surprise Proposal and Lake Arrowhead Engagement

Sarkis first reached out in May to plan a surprise proposal for Tamara near SkyPark in the Lake Arrowhead mountains. What followed was a lesson in patience and flexibility. An event forced us to change locations, a family emergency postponed the proposal, and on the final day, RC planes made the original lookout too busy. Instead of forcing the plan, we found an even better nearby spot. Sarkis and Tamara walked down the path, he gave us our secret thumbs-up cue, and after months of planning, Sarkis finally got down on one knee. She said yes. We spent the rest of their session capturing engagement photos before heading to Lake Arrowhead for portraits by the dock—a reminder that sometimes the unexpected road leads somewhere even better.

Some proposals go exactly according to plan.

Sarkis and Tamara’s wasn’t one of them.

What started as a surprise proposal planned near SkyPark in the Lake Arrowhead mountains turned into months of unexpected changes—a venue conflict, a family emergency and one final location pivot on proposal day.

But looking back, we wouldn’t change the way their story unfolded.

Because sometimes the moments that test your patience are the ones that remind you what love is really about.

Sometimes the Road to "Yes" Has a Few Detours. The Right Moment Is Still Worth the Wait. 💍🏔️
Sarkis & Tamara's proposal didn't happen on the original date, at the original location, or exactly according to the original plan—and somehow, their story became even more meaningful because of it. Mountain proposals can come with changing weather, seasonal conditions, crowds, location changes, and plans that sometimes need to pivot. That's why we don't just show up with cameras. We'll help scout the location, build your timeline and cover story, create backup plans, send you the exact GPS pin, and arrive early to make sure everything is ready before you arrive.

Whether you're dreaming of SkyPark, Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear Lake, a quiet forest setting, or a mountain overlook, we'll help you create a proposal that's worth the drive—and worth the wait.

Plan Your Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead Proposal

The Original Plan: A Surprise Proposal Near SkyPark

Back in May, Sarkis reached out to Last Minute Photoshoot asking if we were available on June 27 to photograph his surprise proposal to Tamara near the SkyPark RV Campground in the Lake Arrowhead area.

Unlike many clients who come to us without a location yet, Sarkis had already done some scouting himself.

He knew the area where he wanted to propose and had a vision for the moment. He just needed Stephanie and me there to discreetly capture it when he got down on one knee.

We reached out almost immediately.

After talking with Sarkis and hearing what he had planned, we had a feeling this was going to be a good one.

He booked us, we started working through the details, and everything seemed to be falling into place.

Then the universe threw us the first fork in the road.

The First Pivot: Our Original Location Was No Longer Available

We learned that an event would be taking place around the original location on the date Sarkis planned to propose.

Suddenly, the spot he had already scouted was no longer going to work the way we wanted it to.

So we pivoted.

Instead of trying to force the original plan, we began working on an alternative around Sky Inn.

And we didn't just look at photos online and hope for the best.

Stephanie and I drove back into the Lake Arrowhead area over the following days to scout it ourselves.

We walked the area, looked at possible proposal positions, studied the surroundings and thought through where Sarkis and Tamara could walk, where we could hide and which direction would give us the strongest photographs.

We try to leave as little as possible to chance.

A surprise proposal happens once.

There are no second takes on that first reaction, so when someone trusts us with a moment this important, we want to arrive knowing as much as possible about the location before they ever get there.

After scouting, we finalized our new plan around Sky Inn.

Problem solved.

Or so we thought.

The Second Pivot: Sometimes Love Requires Patience

Before the proposal could happen, Sarkis had a family emergency that needed his attention.

Immediately, the proposal became secondary.

We put the date on TBA and told Sarkis we'd be there whenever he was ready.

Family comes first.

During that time, I kept thinking about one simple idea:

Love is patience.

That's something Stephanie and I are still learning in our own marriage.

Some people might look at everything that had happened—the first location falling through, the date changing and now a family emergency—and wonder whether all of it was a sign that the proposal wasn't meant to happen.

I see it differently.

Whether you believe in God, the universe or simply that life has a way of teaching us lessons when we least expect them, sometimes adversity gives us an opportunity to see what we're made of.

Relationships aren't only tested when everything is easy.

Sometimes you're handed a fork in the road and asked, What are you going to do now?

Do you give up?

Or do you adjust, support each other and keep moving forward?

Sarkis took care of what mattered most, and when the time was right, he reached back out.

He had a new date.

And after everything we'd planned around Sky Inn, something funny happened.

The original SkyPark area was back in play.

We were going right back to where this story started.

Back to the Original SkyPark Proposal Plan

This time, the plan sounded almost too easy.

Stephanie and I would arrive early.

Sarkis and Tamara would walk toward the proposal location.

We'd stay discreet.

Sarkis would give us a thumbs-up when he was ready.

We'd get into position.

He'd get down on one knee.

Tamara would hopefully say yes.

Simple, right?

After everything we'd already been through, what else could possibly go wrong?

Apparently, the universe had one more adjustment waiting for us.

Proposal Day: One More Last-Minute Location Change

When we arrived near the planned SkyPark proposal location, we realized there were quite a few people flying RC airplanes around the area.

The lookout was on a shared piece of land, and the activity made the original spot feel much busier than we expected.

We could have forced the plan.

Instead, we started looking around.

This is one of the biggest lessons we've learned photographing surprise proposals throughout Southern California: having a plan is important, but being willing to abandon that plan when something better presents itself can be just as important.

We explored the surrounding area and found another nearby spot.

And guess what?

We liked it even more.

After months of changes, delays and uncertainty, patience paid off.

What initially looked like one more problem ended up giving Sarkis and Tamara an even more magical setting for their proposal.

Sometimes Plan B—or Plan C—is better than Plan A.

One Thumbs-Up and It Was Finally Time

Then we waited.

Sarkis and Tamara arrived and began walking down the path.

Stephanie and I followed discreetly behind them, keeping enough distance that Tamara wouldn't suspect anything.

Then Sarkis gave us the cue we'd planned.

Thumbs up.

That was it.

We moved into position.

After all the planning, scouting, changed locations, postponed dates and last-minute adjustments, Sarkis turned toward Tamara and got down on one knee.

She said yes.

Finally.

And maybe it was because we'd watched everything Sarkis had navigated to get to that moment, but seeing the two of them standing there together made the proposal feel even more meaningful.

They made it.

Every fork in the road had led them right there.

From SkyPark to Lake Arrowhead for Engagement Photos

Our afternoon wasn't over once the ring was on Tamara's finger.

After photographing the proposal and giving Sarkis and Tamara a few moments to take everything in, we continued their engagement session before heading toward Lake Arrowhead.

The lake gave us an entirely different backdrop from the mountain setting where Sarkis proposed.

We finished their session near the dock, photographing the two of them together as a newly engaged couple.

This is one of our favorite parts of photographing surprise proposals.

Before the proposal, there are nerves, secret text messages, carefully planned cues and the pressure of keeping everything hidden.

After the proposal?

Everything changes.

The secret is finally out.

The nerves disappear.

And for the rest of the session, couples can simply enjoy the fact that they're engaged.

For Sarkis and Tamara, we were able to tell both sides of that story: the surprise proposal in the mountains near SkyPark and their engagement photos by Lake Arrowhead.

Two completely different settings.

One unforgettable chapter of their story.

What Sarkis & Tamara’s Proposal Taught Us

If there's one thing this proposal reinforced for us, it's that preparation and flexibility have to work together.

We scouted.

We planned.

We changed locations.

We postponed.

We went back to the original location.

Then we changed the exact proposal spot again when we arrived.

And everything still worked.

That's why we believe surprise proposal photography is about much more than showing up with a camera.

A proposal photographer should be thinking about the location, timing, lighting, positioning, crowds, communication, backup options and what happens if the original plan suddenly stops working.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can bring isn't another lens.

It's the ability to stay calm and find another way forward.

Planning a SkyPark or Lake Arrowhead Surprise Proposal?

If you're considering proposing near SkyPark, Lake Arrowhead or elsewhere in the San Bernardino Mountains, our biggest advice is to prepare—but don't become so attached to one exact plan that you can't adapt.

Mountain proposal locations can change quickly depending on events, crowds, weather, access and other visitors.

Scout whenever possible.

Have a backup nearby.

Create a simple cue with your photographer.

Know exactly where you're walking.

And give yourself enough time that an unexpected change doesn't ruin the experience.

That's the approach we used with Sarkis, and it's the same philosophy we bring to surprise proposals throughout Southern California.

At Last Minute Photoshoot, we're Son and Stephanie, a husband-and-wife photography team helping couples plan and photograph surprise proposals throughout Southern California.

Some clients come to us with an exact location already picked out.

Others come to us with nothing more than a date, a ring and an idea.

Either way, we can help with location recommendations, scouting, proposal timelines, exact GPS pins, discreet photography cues, cover stories, backup plans, proposal photography, video and post-proposal engagement photos.

Because the goal isn't to make sure every proposal follows the original plan perfectly.

The goal is to make sure that when the moment finally arrives, you're ready for it.

Sarkis and Tamara's proposal reminded us that love isn't measured by how smoothly everything goes.

Sometimes it's patience.

Sometimes it's resilience.

Sometimes it's trusting that the next fork in the road might lead somewhere even better.

Congratulations, Sarkis and Tamara.

Thank you for trusting Stephanie and me through every change along the way.

Your proposal was absolutely worth the wait. ❤️
