On September 5, we arrived early, placed the flowers and blended into the beach crowd as Carson and Kylie approached. We captured the entire proposal, including one unforgettable moment when Carson had to run back for the ring, before spending the next hour photographing their engagement along the Del Mar coastline.

Late July, Carson sent us a message.
His question was simple:
Were we available September 5 to photograph his surprise proposal?
We were.
And once we heard why he had chosen this particular beach, we knew the location shouldn't change.
Our job was to figure out how to make everything else work around it.
After nearly six years together, Carson didn't need the trendiest proposal location in San Diego. He already knew exactly where he wanted to ask Kylie—the same stretch of Del Mar Beach where they shared one of their first dates. That's what makes a proposal personal. Plan Your San Diego Proposal
A Del Mar Proposal Six Years in the Making
Carson and Kylie had been together for about six years.
During one of their first dates, they spent time along the beach in Del Mar near 29th Street and the San Dieguito River channel.
Years later, Carson wanted to return to that same stretch of coastline with Kylie.
Only this time, he'd be carrying a ring.
We went back and forth with Carson about the details, talked through his ideas and started building the proposal plan.
And that's when our work really began.
Not September 5.
Weeks before September 5.
Proposal Photography Starts Before We Pick Up the Camera
One thing we've learned from planning surprise proposals throughout Southern California is that Google Maps can only tell you so much.
A pin doesn't tell you exactly what the walking route feels like.
It doesn't tell you whether there's something blocking a photographer's angle.
It doesn't show you where people naturally gather.
And it definitely doesn't tell you where someone should stand when they're about to ask one of the biggest questions of their life.
That's why, whenever possible, Steph and I like to physically scout locations we've never photographed before.
Because we're constantly traveling throughout Southern California for proposals, weddings and other sessions, we'll often add a scouting stop to one of our existing trips.
So during one of our drives to San Diego, we made a pit stop in Del Mar.
Scouting Carson's Exact Proposal Location
We parked and walked the beach ourselves.
Not just Del Mar Beach generally.
We went to the actual stretch Carson had described near 29th Street and the San Dieguito River channel.
We walked around.
Looked at the coastline.
Thought about where Carson and Kylie would approach from.
Considered where Steph and I could position ourselves without looking suspicious.
And most importantly, we thought about how Carson would know exactly where to stop.
When you're looking at a long stretch of beach, saying:
"Propose somewhere around here."
isn't good enough.
A few feet can completely change our camera angle.
So we recommended something simple.
The Bouquet Would Mark the Spot
Our plan was to place a bouquet of flowers at the proposal location before Carson and Kylie arrived.
The flowers weren't only there because they looked nice.
They had a job.
They were Carson's marker.
When he saw the bouquet, he would know:
This is the spot.
No checking his phone.
No wandering around looking for us.
No trying to remember which lifeguard tower or patch of sand we had talked about weeks earlier.
He could simply walk Kylie toward the flowers.
We'd handle everything else.
Building the Proposal Timeline
Once we'd physically seen the location, we could plan around the actual environment instead of guessing from a screen.
We mapped out the flow of the day.
Where Carson should go.
Where we'd be.
Where the flowers would sit.
How we'd blend in.
How we'd capture the proposal.
And what we'd do afterward for their engagement session.
As September 5 got closer, we jumped on one final call with Carson.
We walked through everything again.
No assumptions.
No:
"I'm pretty sure he knows what we mean."
We wanted both sides working from the same plan.

September 5: Proposal Day
The big day finally arrived.
Steph and I headed to Del Mar early.
We found parking in one of the neighborhoods across the street and made our way toward the beach.
Then we walked back to the location we'd already scouted.
This time, we weren't there to plan.
We were there to make it happen.
We placed the flowers at the exact spot.
Checked our surroundings.
Prepared our cameras.
And waited.
How Do You Hide Two Photographers on a Beach?
You try very hard to look like you're doing absolutely nothing important. 😂
As Carson and Kylie started walking toward the GPS pin, we could see them approaching from a distance.
Now we needed to disappear into the environment.
So we blended in with everyone else.
Hung out.
Took random photographs.
Looked at the scenery.
Basically did whatever we could to avoid giving Kylie any reason to wonder:
"Why do those two people with cameras keep looking over here?"
From her perspective, this was supposed to feel like another walk along a beach that already held memories for the two of them.
From ours?
We knew another memory was about to be added.
Back to the Beach Where It Started
Carson and Kylie continued toward the spot.
Then Carson saw the flowers.
His marker.
The same little detail we'd talked about during planning.
He knew exactly where to stop.
And that's when we switched from pretending to be random people on the beach to documenting everything.

Camera ready.
Carson turned toward Kylie.
After nearly six years together, standing on a stretch of Del Mar Beach connected to one of their earliest dates, he asked her to marry him.
And Kylie said yes.
From One of Their First Dates to Their Engagement
That's what made this proposal special to us.
Del Mar wasn't just a beautiful backdrop Carson found online.
It was already part of their relationship.
They had walked this coastline years earlier without knowing where their story would eventually take them.

We love photographing beautiful places.

An Hour of Del Mar Engagement Photos
Once the surprise was over, we could finally introduce ourselves properly to Kylie.
No more hiding.
No more pretending to photograph random things. 😂
And now Carson could relax too.
The ring was on Kylie's hand.
The secret he'd been carrying was finally out.
We spent roughly the next hour walking the beach and photographing their newly engaged excitement.
Carson and Kylie were both incredibly sweet and easy to work with.
We gave them direction when they needed it, but we didn't want the session to feel like an hour of stiff poses.
We talked.
We moved.
We asked questions.
We brought up memories.
We gave them little prompts that allowed their actual personalities to come through.
That's usually where our favorite photographs happen.
Not when someone is thinking:
"Where do I put my hands?"
But when they forget for a second that they're being photographed at all.

Stone originally contacted us in early July about photographing a surprise proposal somewhere in San Diego on August 10.
They were traveling from Arizona, he wanted us to capture the proposal itself, and he needed some help figuring out how to actually pull off the surprise.
His biggest request was simple:
Samantha wanted something near the beach or along the cliffs, preferably somewhere that could feel private.
We had about a month.
So we got to work.
What started as a plan for the cliffs of La Jolla eventually became something much more personal—a sunset proposal at Windansea Beach surrounded by waves, rocks, and the green-covered coastline Samantha already loved.

Planning a Destination Proposal From Arizona
Planning a proposal from another state can feel overwhelming.
You can look through photographs.
Search Google Maps.
Watch videos.
Read blogs.
But it's difficult to understand how a location actually feels until you're standing there.
Stone and Samantha were coming from Arizona, so part of our job was helping Stone narrow down San Diego's coastline without requiring him to figure everything out himself.
We sent him several options, including:
La Jolla Gliderport
Sunset Cliffs
Del Mar
Oceanside Pier
Each location gave him something different.
The Gliderport offered dramatic cliffs, open Pacific Ocean views, and paragliders.
Sunset Cliffs had rugged coastline and classic San Diego sunset scenery.
Del Mar offered a more traditional coastal experience.
Oceanside gave him the beach and pier environment.
After looking through our galleries and comparing the different locations, Stone chose:
La Jolla Gliderport.
We were excited.
We've photographed a lot of proposals there, and there's a reason we keep going back.
The sunsets can be incredible.
The cliffs create an enormous backdrop.
And watching paragliders float above the coastline while you're waiting to ask one of the biggest questions of your life is pretty hard to beat.
At least, we thought the location was settled.
Once We Had the Location, We Started Building the Plan
Choosing a proposal location is only the beginning.
Once Stone decided on the Gliderport, we started working through the details.
We sent over our proposal planning information, including a quick checklist, helpful FYI information for proposal day, and a tentative timeline for how everything would happen.
We still had plenty of time before August 10, so there was no need to rush.
We could dial everything in.
Where Stone and Samantha would arrive.
Where we'd be positioned.
How we'd remain discreet.
What his cue would be.
When the proposal should happen.
And what we'd do immediately afterward.
Then, a few weeks before proposal day, Stone reached out with a question.
Were we familiar with Windansea Beach?
We were.
And suddenly the plan changed.
Why We Changed the Proposal From La Jolla Gliderport to Windansea Beach
Stone told us that Samantha had mentioned how much she loved the green algae-covered rocks at Windansea.
That changed the conversation.
Windansea Beach has a completely different look from the Gliderport.
Instead of standing high above the Pacific on dramatic cliffs, you're down beside the water.
There are waves.
Sand.
Sandstone formations.
Surfers.
The historic Surf Shack.
And rocks along the shoreline that can develop vivid green growth in areas regularly exposed to moisture and ocean conditions.
Tides and surf play a major role in what the shoreline looks like on any particular day, which is one reason we always recommend checking conditions before planning a Windansea proposal.
But the biggest reason to change locations had nothing to do with photography.
Samantha already loved it.
That's more important.
Choose a Proposal Location That Means Something
It's easy to search:
"Best places to propose in San Diego."
You'll get plenty of beautiful locations.
But the most photographed location isn't automatically the right one.
When Stone told us Samantha specifically loved something about Windansea, that immediately gave the location more meaning.
The Gliderport might have offered bigger cliffs.
Another beach might have been quieter.
Another location might have been easier to access.
But Windansea had something none of them did.
A connection to Samantha.
So we pivoted.
The Gliderport plan was out.
Windansea Beach was in.
Why Windansea Beach Works for a Surprise Proposal
Windansea is one of La Jolla's most recognizable beaches, but it doesn't feel like a manicured resort.
It's a real San Diego surf beach.
You'll see surfers in the water.
People sitting on rocks watching sunset.
Couples walking the shoreline.
Locals hanging out.
And the historic Surf Shack overlooking the beach.
The rocky coastline creates a lot of variety for photographs, especially when the tide and surf cooperate.
For Stone, it gave him the beach proposal Samantha wanted while still offering the dramatic coastal scenery he originally liked about the Gliderport.
Proposal Day: Meeting Stone Before Samantha Arrived
Whenever possible, we recommend doing an in-person walkthrough before a surprise proposal.
Even if we've already sent:
GPS pins.
Photos.
Maps.
Timelines.
Instructions.
And proposal cues.
There's something different about physically standing in the location together.
Stone was able to get away from Samantha for about 30 to 40 minutes by telling her he needed to pick up some supplies.
That gave us enough time.
We met him at Windansea earlier that day.
And almost immediately, it felt like we were meeting up with an old friend.
Stone was incredibly easy to get along with.
That's something we appreciate about this work.
Proposal planning can be stressful.
But once we get to know the person we're helping, the process becomes much more relaxed.
We try to approach our clients the way we'd approach helping a friend.
Because for a few weeks—or sometimes only a few hours—that's basically what we're doing.
Walking Windansea Before the Proposal
The three of us walked the beach together.
We checked the shoreline.
Walked around the rocks.
Looked at the famous Surf Shack.
Watched where people were gathering.
Studied the light.
And started mapping out exactly how the proposal would happen.
Where would Stone stand?
Where would Samantha be facing?
Where would we position ourselves?
How could we follow them without making Samantha suspicious?
What would happen immediately afterward?
These might sound like tiny details.
But when you only get one chance to capture someone's genuine reaction, tiny details matter.
Why We Recommend a Proposal Walkthrough
If you're proposing somewhere unfamiliar and you have an opportunity to meet your photographer beforehand, we'd recommend doing it.
A walkthrough gives you a chance to physically see:
Where you're going.
Where you'll stop.
Where your photographer will be.
Which direction you'll face.
What the background looks like.
Where family or surprises are hidden.
And most importantly:
What happens next.
You don't want to arrive at proposal time and suddenly realize you don't remember which rock you're supposed to stand beside.
The more we can remove those questions beforehand, the more you can focus on what you're actually there to do.
What Stone Said After the Proposal

That way, he didn't have to walk onto Windansea Beach carrying flowers and a bottle while pretending nothing unusual was happening.
It's a small detail.
But that's exactly the kind of thing that can give away a surprise.
Instead, everything would be waiting after she said yes.
The Plan Was Simple
By the time we finished the walkthrough, everyone knew their role.
Stone and Samantha would arrive together.
We'd already be nearby.
We'd keep our distance and blend into the beach.
Stone would guide Samantha toward the predetermined proposal area.
Then he'd give us our cue:
A thumbs-up.
That would tell us:
It's happening. Get ready.
Simple.
At least on paper.
Proposal Plans Don't Always Go Exactly According to Plan
When proposal time arrived, we spotted Stone and Samantha coming toward the beach.
We kept our distance.
Followed discreetly.
And waited.
They walked toward the location we'd mapped out earlier.
We watched Stone.
Waiting for the thumbs-up.
Except...

The Japanese Friendship Garden inside Balboa Park.
More specifically...
The Earth Bridge.
We've photographed multiple surprise proposals here over the years, and every time we're reminded why it's one of our favorite proposal locations in Southern California.
Surrounded by koi ponds, waterfalls, bamboo, and lush gardens, the Earth Bridge creates an atmosphere that's peaceful, intimate, and timeless.
To give Kilian and Nikki as much privacy as possible, we recommended a weekday morning proposal shortly after the garden opened.
Afterward, we'd explore Balboa Park together for engagement portraits.
Everything was planned.
All Kilian had to do...
Was show up.
One Last Call Before the Big Day
As proposal day approached, we jumped on one final call together.
We reviewed every detail.
Where everyone would stand.

A Beautiful Morning in Balboa Park
On the morning of June 19th, Stephanie and I arrived bright and early at the Japanese Friendship Garden.
Kilian's friends and family were already waiting outside the entrance before the garden opened at 10:00 AM.
Everyone was excited.
Everyone was nervous.
As soon as the gates opened, we quietly made our way toward the Earth Bridge while family members found places throughout the garden where they could watch without giving away the surprise.
Everything was unfolding exactly as planned.
One Question Changed Everything
A few moments later...
Kilian and Nikki entered the garden.
Hand in hand, they slowly made their way along the pathways toward the Earth Bridge.
The morning was peaceful.
The garden was quiet.
When they reached the center of the bridge, Kilian gently held Nikki's hand.
He took a deep breath.
Dropped to one knee.
Looked into her eyes.
And asked the biggest question of his life.
"Will you marry me?"
Without hesitation...
Nikki smiled.
