He and his girlfriend, Nikki, would be traveling to San Diego in June, and he wanted to ask one of the biggest questions of his life while surrounded by one of the most peaceful places in the city.

After talking through several ideas, we kept coming back to one location.

The Japanese Friendship Garden inside Balboa Park.

More specifically...

The Earth Bridge.

We've photographed multiple surprise proposals here over the years, and every time we're reminded why it's one of our favorite proposal locations in Southern California.

Surrounded by koi ponds, waterfalls, bamboo, and lush gardens, the Earth Bridge creates an atmosphere that's peaceful, intimate, and timeless.

To give Kilian and Nikki as much privacy as possible, we recommended a weekday morning proposal shortly after the garden opened.

Afterward, we'd explore Balboa Park together for engagement portraits.

Everything was planned.

All Kilian had to do...

Was show up.

One Last Call Before the Big Day

As proposal day approached, we jumped on one final call together.

We reviewed every detail.

Where everyone would stand.

How friends and family would stay hidden.

The walking route.

The proposal cue.

What would happen after she said "Yes."

One thing we've learned after photographing hundreds of surprise proposals is this:

A Beautiful Morning in Balboa Park

On the morning of June 19th, Stephanie and I arrived bright and early at the Japanese Friendship Garden.

Kilian's friends and family were already waiting outside the entrance before the garden opened at 10:00 AM.

Everyone was excited.

Everyone was nervous.

As soon as the gates opened, we quietly made our way toward the Earth Bridge while family members found places throughout the garden where they could watch without giving away the surprise.

Everything was unfolding exactly as planned.

One Question Changed Everything

A few moments later...

Kilian and Nikki entered the garden.

Hand in hand, they slowly made their way along the pathways toward the Earth Bridge.

The morning was peaceful.

The garden was quiet.

When they reached the center of the bridge, Kilian gently held Nikki's hand.

He took a deep breath.

Dropped to one knee.

Looked into her eyes.

And asked the biggest question of his life.

"Will you marry me?"

Without hesitation...

Nikki smiled.

She said...

Then something incredible happened.

Cheers echoed throughout the Japanese Friendship Garden.

Friends and family emerged from around the garden, clapping, celebrating, and sharing in one of the happiest moments of their lives.
