When we first scouted the location, Google Maps attempted to send us around a much larger portion of the island. Apple Maps showed us a more practical route through Avalon. Navigation results can change, so review the entire route instead of blindly following the next instruction.

That does not make the location less beautiful. The softer light over Avalon Bay can be incredibly flattering, but your proposal should be planned around the actual terrain rather than the published sunset time alone.

If you want a sunset-time proposal, we strongly recommend spending at least one night on Catalina Island. Depending on seasonal ferry schedules, a late proposal may not leave enough time to comfortably reach the terminal for a return sailing.

How Do You Get to Buena Vista Point?

Transportation should be part of your proposal plan from the beginning.

Uber and Lyft do not currently operate on Catalina Island. Visitors generally travel around Avalon by walking, golf cart, hotel shuttle, COAST by Circuit, or a prearranged private transportation service.

COAST by Circuit

COAST is Avalon’s on-demand public transportation service. According to the official Catalina Island visitor website, rides within Avalon city limits begin at approximately $2 per rider, and standard operating hours are currently 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

You request the ride through the Ride Circuit app.

COAST can be affordable and convenient, but availability and pickup times may vary. When we used it to scout Buena Vista Point, the ride uphill cost $4 total for both of us.

The problem came afterward.

We had little to no cell service at the overlook and could not successfully request another ride. Our driver could not simply wait for us, and we eventually had to ask a local for help getting to our accommodations.

Do not make COAST your only proposal transportation plan without preparing for poor cell service and an unavailable return ride.

Golf Cart

A golf cart provides more control over your schedule and makes it easier to transport flowers, picnic supplies, and photography equipment.

Most visitor golf carts are rented by the hour and must remain within approved routes inside Avalon. Current visitor information indicates that standard rentals may be limited to two hours. Some vacation rentals include a golf cart for guest use, which can offer greater flexibility.

Our Hamilton Cove rental included access to a golf cart, and that made reaching Buena Vista Point with the proposal supplies significantly easier.

Before using a golf cart, confirm:

• Your rental return time

Catalina Taxi and Tours announced that its traditional on-call Avalon taxi service will end after October 19, 2026. The company plans to continue offering tours, interior shuttles, and private transportation bookings.

If you are planning a proposal after that date, do not rely on older blogs or travel pages that say an on-call taxi will always be available. Verify current options before your trip and arrange private transportation in advance when possible.

Walking to Buena Vista Point

Walking may be possible for active visitors, but Buena Vista Point is uphill from central Avalon. The walk can feel much more demanding if you are dressed formally, carrying supplies, or navigating warm weather.

If walking is part of the cover story, bring comfortable shoes and change into dress shoes near the location. Allow more time than the map suggests.

Is Cell Service Reliable at Buena Vista Point?

Based on our firsthand experience, cell service at Buena Vista Point can be weak or unavailable.

We use T-Mobile and had our strongest service around Crescent Avenue in central Avalon. Once we traveled farther from town and into the hills, the connection became inconsistent.

Limited service creates a serious challenge during a surprise proposal. The photographer may be waiting at the location while the couple is trying to communicate an arrival time or explain a delay.

Before leaving Avalon:

In late July, Kyle reached out through our online contact form with an exciting question: were we available to photograph his surprise proposal to his then-girlfriend, Olivia, on Catalina Island?

His original plan was to propose on September 4, but we were already booked that day. Thankfully, Kyle had some flexibility, and we moved the proposal to September 10.

He needed help planning the experience and asked if we could schedule a call to discuss everything in greater detail.

We were pumped.

Stephanie and I had been researching how to plan and photograph a Catalina Island proposal for a while, but no one had booked us for one yet. Kyle would become our first Catalina proposal client, and Buena Vista Point would become the location for one of our most memorable assignments.

Kyle was planning everything from Minnesota, while we were based in Southern California. It was his first time visiting Catalina Island—and ours too.

Creating a Catalina Island Picnic Proposal

During our discovery call, Kyle shared that he wanted to include a romantic picnic setup for Olivia.

We loved the idea, but transporting our usual boho picnic setup to Catalina Island did not seem realistic. Our standard setup can include a picnic table, pillows, rugs, décor, floral accents, and multiple accessories. Everything would need to travel with us by ferry and then be carried or transported from Avalon to Buena Vista Point.

Catalina Island proposals require you to think differently about logistics. You cannot load everything into a car and drive directly to the location.

The goal was not simply to arrive and take photographs. We wanted to experience Catalina Island ourselves so we could help Kyle create a realistic itinerary and provide advice based on firsthand experience.

As September 10 approached, we scheduled one more call with Kyle before he traveled from Minnesota. We reviewed the plan, confirmed the timing, and made sure he felt prepared for the big day.

Then, on September 9, Stephanie and I traveled to Catalina Island one day early to familiarize ourselves with Avalon and scout Buena Vista Point in person.

Nearly Missing the Ferry to Catalina Island

Our morning began with a little more excitement than we had planned.

We got stuck in traffic longer than expected and nearly missed our ferry from Long Beach. Our boarding time was 9:50 a.m., and passengers are expected to be ready approximately 10 to 15 minutes before departure.

We arrived a little after 10:00 a.m. and were lucky enough to make the final check-in.

Very fitting for a business called Last Minute Photoshoot, we guess. 😊

We had planned to arrive early, buy a mimosa, sit together, and enjoy the beginning of our work trip.

None of that happened.

The ferry was packed. We managed to find seats, but we could not sit next to each other. Still, we made it aboard with our luggage, camera equipment, and some of the picnic items for Kyle and Olivia’s proposal.

That was all that mattered.

The experience taught us an important lesson: when traveling to Catalina Island for a proposal, arrive at the ferry terminal much earlier than you think you need to.

Arriving in Avalon for the First Time

Once we arrived in Avalon, we walked into town and stopped for lunch at the first restaurant that caught our attention: Topside by NDMK.

We found rooftop seating overlooking Avalon Bay and finally had an opportunity to eat, recharge, and take in the view. After the stressful drive and rushed ferry boarding, food and refreshments were desperately needed.

Once we finished lunch, our main mission began: finding and scouting Buena Vista Point.

We were already tired, and walking more than two miles uphill with our luggage did not sound like the best plan. We started asking around about transportation and quickly learned that Uber and Lyft do not operate on Catalina Island.

The primary options available to us were a local taxi service, which came at a more premium price, or Avalon’s on-demand rideshare service, Circuit.

Taking Circuit to Buena Vista Point

We booked a Circuit ride to Buena Vista Point for $4 total—$2 per person.

The ride up was convenient and inexpensive. Once we arrived, we asked if the driver could wait while we scouted the area. We quickly learned that was not how the service worked. We would need to request another ride when we were ready to leave.

We explored Buena Vista Point, studied the view, checked the available space, and began determining exactly where Kyle should propose.

We considered:

• The view of Avalon Harbor

• The position of the Catalina Casino

• Where Olivia should stand

• Which direction Kyle should face

• The location of the picnic

• Available space for photography

• The direction and quality of the light

• How we would remain hidden

• Where Kyle and Olivia would enter

• How they would leave after the proposal

After scouting, we attempted to book another Circuit ride.

That was when we discovered one of the biggest challenges of planning a proposal away from central Avalon: unreliable cell service.

Our phones had little to no reception, and we could not successfully request a ride. We were standing at the top of Buena Vista Point with our luggage, tired from the journey and unable to contact anyone.

What had already felt like a long day suddenly became overwhelming.

Stranded at Buena Vista Point—and Meeting Scotty

We eventually accepted that we might have to walk back into Avalon, find water, and then begin the much longer journey to our Airbnb at Hamilton Cove.

As we prepared ourselves for the walk, we noticed someone nearby relaxing in his golf cart and enjoying the afternoon.

His name was Scotty.

I walked over and asked, “Hey, excuse me—would you be able to take us down the hill or, if possible, to our Airbnb?”

Scotty was a local, and he said yes without hesitation.

During the approximately 20-minute golf-cart ride to Hamilton Cove, we got to know him. What began as a request for help from a stranger turned into a genuine connection.

Scotty felt like a godsend that afternoon, and he has since become someone we consider a friend. He got us out of a difficult situation at exactly the moment we needed help.

It was one of those unexpected moments that reminded us how much kindness can change someone’s entire day.

Checking Into Hamilton Cove

Once we reached Hamilton Cove, there was still one more challenge waiting for us: more than 100 steps leading to our Airbnb.

After carrying our belongings up the stairs, we finally reached the unit—and the view made every stressful part of the day feel worthwhile.

Our Airbnb overlooked Hamilton Cove Beach, and the scenery was spectacular. We could finally sit down, recharge, and appreciate where we were.

More importantly, we had successfully scouted Buena Vista Point. We now understood the route, terrain, transportation challenges, cell-service limitations, and exact view Kyle and Olivia would experience the following day.

No amount of online research could have prepared us for everything we learned by physically being on the island.

Preparing for Kyle and Olivia’s Proposal

By the next morning, we were rested, energized, and ready.

We visited Vons, the main grocery store in Avalon, to pick up flowers, snacks, wine, and the final items for Kyle and Olivia’s picnic.

We sent Kyle a check-in message and prepared for the possibility that cell service would become unreliable again.

We also saved screenshots of the route to Buena Vista Point. During our planning, we discovered that Apple Maps provided the more practical directions from our location. Google Maps was trying to route us around a much larger portion of the island instead of showing the more direct route through town.

That small discovery could have created a major timing problem if we had not traveled to Catalina early and tested the route ourselves.

We did not hear much from Kyle that day, but we knew he and Olivia had arrived on the island. At that point, everyone had to trust the plan and arrive at the scheduled time.

Setting Up the Proposal at Buena Vista Point

Our Hamilton Cove Airbnb host provided access to a golf cart, which made transporting the flowers, picnic basket, wine, snacks, camera equipment, and other supplies to Buena Vista Point much easier.

We arrived before Kyle and Olivia, selected the final proposal position, and began setting everything up.

The picnic was intentionally simple and romantic, allowing the Catalina scenery to remain the focus. Buena Vista Point already provided an incredible background overlooking Avalon Harbor, the boats below, the Catalina Casino, and the surrounding hills.

Once the setup was complete, we moved into position and waited.

Then we waited a little longer.

Because cell service was so limited, we had not received another update from Kyle. As the scheduled proposal time approached, we began wondering whether they were delayed, had taken a wrong turn, or were having trouble reaching the location.

We had already done everything we could. Now we had to trust Kyle, trust the timeline, and remain ready.

The Moment Kyle and Olivia Arrived

Only minutes before the scheduled proposal time, Kyle suddenly walked past us with Olivia.

Stephanie and I barely had time to react.

There was no opportunity for a final check-in, a text message, or a carefully staged cue. We immediately moved into position, prepared our cameras, and began photographing and recording the moment as it unfolded.

After more than a month of planning, two interstate journeys, a nearly missed ferry, spotty cell service, a scouting trip, an unexpected friendship, and countless logistical decisions, Kyle and Olivia had finally reached Buena Vista Point.

Kyle guided Olivia toward the overlook with Avalon Harbor and the Catalina Casino behind them.

Then he got down on one knee.

Olivia said yes.

Everything that had felt stressful or uncertain disappeared in that moment. Kyle had pulled off the surprise, Olivia was now his fiancée, and we were there to preserve it for them.

Celebrating After the Yes

After the initial surprise, we gave Kyle and Olivia time to take in what had just happened.

A proposal moves quickly. There is the walk toward the location, the realization that something is happening, the question, the answer, and the rush of emotion immediately afterward.

We never want couples to feel as if they must move directly into posed photographs. We allow them time to hug, talk, look at the ring, laugh, and be present with each other.

We then guided Kyle and Olivia through a short engagement session around Buena Vista Point. With Avalon Harbor and the Catalina Casino behind them, nearly every direction offered a beautiful Catalina Island background.

They did not need to know how to pose. We helped them with positioning while keeping the photographs natural and focused on their connection.

After the portraits, they were able to enjoy the picnic overlooking the bay. The matching mat, picnic basket, flowers, wine, and snacks created a quiet space where they could sit together and celebrate their first moments as an engaged couple.

The setup was minimal, but the experience felt complete.

What This Catalina Island Proposal Taught Us

Kyle and Olivia’s proposal reinforced why scouting and firsthand experience matter so much.

Before traveling to Catalina Island, we had done extensive research. We studied maps, transportation options, photographs, proposal locations, restaurants, and accommodations.

But research could not fully prepare us for:

• Nearly missing the ferry

• Traveling with luggage and proposal supplies

• Limited transportation availability

• Losing cell service at Buena Vista Point

• Being unable to request a return ride

• Learning which navigation app provided the better route

• Transporting picnic items by golf cart

• Coordinating without reliable communication

• Adjusting instantly when the couple arrived unexpectedly

Those challenges did not ruin the experience. They made us better prepared to help future Catalina Island proposal clients.

We now understand that a successful proposal in Avalon requires more than selecting a beautiful location. You need a transportation plan, offline directions, realistic buffers, backup communication, knowledge of the terrain, and people who are willing to arrive early and adapt when something changes.

Why Buena Vista Point Is a Beautiful Place to Propose

Buena Vista Point is one of our favorite places to propose on Catalina Island because it offers an unmistakable view of Avalon.

From the overlook, you can see:

• Avalon Harbor

• The Catalina Casino

• Boats throughout the bay

• The Pacific Ocean

• Catalina’s hills and coastline

• The colorful buildings surrounding Avalon

It works especially well for couples who want a scenic proposal away from the busiest part of Crescent Avenue.

However, couples should also understand the logistical challenges. Buena Vista Point has uneven terrain, limited space, minimal shade, and potentially unreliable cell service. Transportation should be arranged carefully, and offline directions should be saved before leaving central Avalon.

A minimal picnic is generally more realistic than a large installation because everything must be transported to the overlook and removed afterward.

When Kyle hired us, he was not simply booking someone to press a shutter button.
