When the Tide Changed the Plan | Israel & Jaelynn’s Victoria Beach Pirate Tower Proposal
What began as a Crystal Cove proposal became a romantic morning surprise at Victoria Beach's iconic Pirate Tower in Laguna Beach. In early September, Israel reached out to plan his proposal to Jaelynn, complete with beautiful red rose arrangements overlooking the Pacific Ocean. When the original location wasn't available, we helped find a new setting, adjusted the date to September 22, and monitored the tides to ensure a safer setup. The day before, we prepared 10 dozen bouquets of long-stem red roses. On proposal morning, we arrived early, arranged the flowers and quietly captured Israel getting down on one knee. Discover how location scouting, tide planning, floral preparation and a little flexibility brought their Laguna Beach surprise proposal to life.
Some of the most beautiful surprise proposals don't go exactly as originally planned.
Sometimes a location isn't available.
Sometimes a permit doesn't work out.
And sometimes the ocean itself determines when the proposal should happen.
That's exactly what happened while planning Israel and Jaelynn's surprise proposal at Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach, California.
What started as a September proposal at Crystal Cove eventually became a romantic morning proposal in front of the iconic Pirate Tower, surrounded by long-stem red roses and the sound of the Pacific Ocean.
And getting there involved more planning than most people would ever realize from looking at the final photographs.
Israel envisioned a romantic beach proposal surrounded by flowers. But between changing locations, coastal conditions, and finding the right timing, bringing that vision to life took a little creativity. That's the beauty of a thoughtfully planned surprise proposal. The location might change, the tides might have their own schedule, but the moment can still be everything you imagined. From scouting Victoria Beach and planning around the tides to arranging the flowers, coordinating the setup, and capturing the surprise, we're here to help bring the details together.

An Early September Inquiry for a Crystal Cove Proposal
In early September, Israel reached out through our website asking if we were available on September 11 to photograph his surprise proposal to his then-girlfriend, Jaelynn.
He had a location in mind: Crystal Cove, along the Orange County coastline.
He also wanted to make the moment extra special with a floral arrangement and possibly a "Marry Me" sign.
We loved the idea.
We jumped on a discovery call right away to learn more about their relationship, the experience Israel was imagining, his preferred date, and what kind of decorations he wanted.
As with most of our surprise proposal clients, our goal wasn't simply to show up with cameras.
We wanted to help him put the entire experience together.
When the Original Proposal Location Wasn't Available
After our call, we began researching options for the setup.
One location we explored was Pelican Point Overlook at Crystal Cove State Park, along the Newport Coast.
Because Israel wanted decorations and professional photography, we looked into the necessary permissions and availability rather than assuming we could simply show up with flowers and a sign.
Unfortunately, the dates we were considering were already booked.
So we had a decision to make.
Try to force the original idea somewhere that might not work?
Or find a location that could be even better?
We chose the second option.
This is something we've learned from photographing surprise proposals throughout Southern California: the first location isn't always the right location.
Sometimes a change in plans leads to something more personal, more beautiful, or simply better suited to the experience you're trying to create.
Falling in Love With Victoria Beach and the Pirate Tower
We went back to the drawing board and started sharing galleries from other Orange County proposal locations we'd photographed.
Laguna Beach has several beautiful coastal settings, each with a different atmosphere.
Some have grassy overlooks.
Some have sweeping cliffside views.
Others offer dramatic rock formations and direct access to the sand.
When Israel saw our photographs from Victoria Beach and the historic Pirate Tower in Laguna Beach, he knew he'd found the setting he wanted.
And we understood why.
Victoria Beach has a completely different feel from a typical beach proposal location.
The Pirate Tower rises beside the rocky coastline, creating one of Laguna Beach's most recognizable backdrops.
With the right conditions, it can look like something out of a storybook.
Israel wanted to propose directly in front of the tower, with red roses helping frame the moment.
We had our new location.
Now we needed to find the right time.
Why We Chose a Morning Proposal Instead of Sunset
This is one of the most important planning details from Israel and Jaelynn's proposal.
At Victoria Beach, the tide can matter more than the sunset.
A lot of couples automatically imagine proposing at golden hour.
And we understand why.
Sunset proposals can be beautiful.
But when you're planning a proposal on the sand near the Pirate Tower, you have to consider much more than lighting.
You need to think about the ocean.
Victoria Beach has rocky sections, changing shoreline conditions, and areas where rising water can affect access.
And because Israel wanted a floral setup, we needed enough usable space to arrange the roses safely without worrying about waves reaching the decorations.
We monitored the tide forecasts while planning.
After reviewing the conditions for our proposed dates, we realized a morning proposal on September 22 would give us a much more favorable low-tide window.
So instead of forcing a sunset proposal, we planned around the ocean.
That decision gave us a better opportunity to set up the flowers, position our cameras and capture the proposal with the Pirate Tower in the background.
It's an important reminder for anyone researching a Victoria Beach proposal:
The best time to propose at the Pirate Tower isn't necessarily sunset. It's when the lighting, tides, access and your proposal setup work together.
A low tide also doesn't guarantee completely safe conditions. Waves, swell and weather still matter, and forecasts should always be checked again close to the proposal.
Planning Every Detail for Israel
Once we'd settled on September 22, we began finalizing the plan.
We worked through the logistics so Israel wouldn't have to figure everything out on proposal morning.
That included:
Confirming the proposal location at Victoria Beach
Selecting the morning timing around the tide forecast
Sharing the exact GPS pin
Planning where the floral arrangement would go
Preparing our photography positions
Coordinating Israel and Jaelynn's arrival
Monitoring changing beach conditions
Creating a plan for setting up before they arrived
We wanted Israel to feel confident about where he was going, what would happen when he arrived and where we'd be positioned.
One of the things we tell clients is that you shouldn't be worrying about logistics while you're preparing to ask the biggest question of your life.
That's what the planning is for.
Preparing 10 Dozen Long-Stem Red Roses
The day before the proposal, Stephanie and I went out to pick up the flowers.
For Israel and Jaelynn's setup, we purchased 10 dozen bouquets of long-stem red roses.
That's a lot of roses.
We spent time preparing them, organizing the arrangements and making sure everything would be ready to transport the next morning.
Floral proposals require more behind-the-scenes preparation than most people realize.
It's not just about choosing a flower color.
You have to think about transportation, freshness, arrangement design, setup time, the weather and the location itself.
And at a beach, there's another consideration:
You have to work around the sand, wind and water.
We wanted the red roses to complement the Pirate Tower and ocean backdrop without distracting from the moment Israel and Jaelynn were about to share.
After preparing everything, we carefully loaded the flowers into our vehicle.
Then we were ready for the morning.
Proposal Morning at Victoria Beach
On September 22, we sent Israel a final check-in before heading toward Laguna Beach.
We wanted to make sure he was feeling good about the plan and that everything was still on schedule.
Then we loaded up and headed toward Victoria Beach.
We arrived early.
That gave us time to check the beach conditions, carry the floral arrangements down, set everything up and get our cameras ready before Israel and Jaelynn arrived.
The red roses looked beautiful against the sand, the Pacific Ocean and the Pirate Tower.
After all the changes—from Crystal Cove to Victoria Beach, from September 11 to September 22, and from a possible sunset proposal to a morning low-tide plan—it was exciting to finally see everything come together.
Once we finished setting up, we sent Israel a message.
Everything was ready.
Now we just needed him to arrive.
Israel & Jaelynn's Surprise Proposal in Front of the Pirate Tower
When Israel and Jaelynn arrived at Victoria Beach, we stepped back and let the moment happen naturally.
The red roses were waiting.
The Pirate Tower stood behind them.
And the Pacific Ocean created the backdrop we'd spent so much time planning around.
Israel led Jaelynn toward the setup and got down on one knee.
We quietly photographed the entire moment, capturing the surprise, their reactions and the beginning of their engagement.
Afterward, we spent time photographing the two of them together.
They were both incredibly kind and easy to work with, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
Seeing them together in front of the Pirate Tower, surrounded by the roses we'd prepared, made all the planning worth it.
What started as a completely different proposal idea had turned into something beautiful.
What This Victoria Beach Proposal Taught Us
Israel and Jaelynn's proposal is a perfect example of why we believe surprise proposal photography involves much more than taking photographs.
We started with one location.
Researched permissions.
Discovered our preferred dates weren't available.
Found a different location.
Changed the date.
Monitored the tides.
Selected a morning proposal instead of sunset.
Prepared 10 dozen bouquets of red roses.
Arrived early to set everything up.
And finally captured the moment Israel asked Jaelynn to marry him.
From the outside, it might look like a simple romantic proposal on the beach.
But behind those photographs were weeks of communication, preparation and decisions.
And that's exactly what we love about helping couples plan surprise proposals.
Sometimes the most important part of the plan is knowing when to change it.
