Plan Your San Diego Proposal
Why We Love the Japanese Friendship Garden
Located within the heart of Balboa Park, the Japanese Friendship Garden is one of San Diego's most peaceful and picturesque destinations.
Created to celebrate the friendship between San Diego and Yokohama, Japan, the garden blends traditional Japanese design with Southern California's natural beauty.
As you wander through the garden you'll discover:
Peaceful koi ponds
Flowing waterfalls
Stone pathways
Bamboo groves
Carefully manicured gardens
Quiet seating areas
And one of our favorite proposal locations...
The Earth Bridge.
Surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil water, the bridge creates an intimate setting that feels timeless, elegant, and incredibly romantic.
For couples looking for a proposal location that's peaceful without sacrificing beauty, the Japanese Friendship Garden continues to be one of our favorite recommendations.
Planning Every Step
Once Josh booked with us, we immediately began planning.
One thing we've learned after photographing countless surprise proposals is that preparation removes stress.
The more planning we do beforehand...
The easier proposal day becomes.
Together we finalized:
The proposal timeline
Meeting location
GPS directions
Where we'd be positioned
Where Josh and Tao would walk
The proposal cue
The photography plan afterward
Our goal is simple.
By the time proposal day arrives...
Everything should already be taken care of.
So all Josh had to do was show up and ask one of the biggest questions of his life.
A Peaceful Morning Inside Balboa Park
The morning of the proposal, Stephanie and I arrived early to scout the garden one last time.
Morning has become one of our favorite times to photograph inside the Japanese Friendship Garden.
The light is soft.
The temperatures are comfortable.
And the garden feels incredibly peaceful before the larger crowds arrive.
That morning was especially quiet.
In fact, it was almost as if we had the entire garden to ourselves.
Exactly what every surprise proposal hopes for.
Blending Into the Background
As Josh and Tao made their way through the garden, we did what we usually do.
We blended in like tourists.
Taking photos.
Walking the pathways.
Admiring the scenery.
Trying not to look suspicious.
When Josh reached the Earth Bridge and knew he was ready, he casually looked our direction and gave us a subtle thumbs up.
That was our cue.
We quietly got into position.
The next few moments would change both of their lives forever.
One Bridge. One Question. One "Yes."
Josh gently reached for Tao's hand.
Together they stepped onto the Earth Bridge.
With the morning sunlight filtering through the trees and the peaceful sounds of the garden surrounding them, everything seemed to slow down.
He looked into her eyes.
Dropped to one knee.
Shared everything he'd been waiting to say.
And asked the biggest question of his life.
She smiled.
She was completely surprised.
And without hesitation...
She said...
"Yes."
Those few seconds are why we love what we do.
They're real.
They're emotional.
And they're moments that can never be recreated.
Exploring the Garden Together
With the surprise complete, the rest of the morning belonged to them.
For the next hour we explored the Japanese Friendship Garden together, photographing their engagement throughout one of San Diego's most beautiful locations.
From the Earth Bridge and winding stone pathways to the waterfalls, koi ponds, and peaceful gardens, every corner offered another incredible backdrop.
One of the things we love most about photographing here is the variety.
You never have to leave the garden to create an entire engagement gallery that feels diverse, elegant, and timeless.
Every season looks a little different.
Every proposal tells a different story.
That's what keeps bringing us back.
Why the Japanese Friendship Garden Is One of San Diego's Best Proposal Locations
If you're looking for a proposal location that's intimate, elegant, and unlike anywhere else in Southern California, the Japanese Friendship Garden deserves to be at the top of your list.
The Earth Bridge has become one of our favorite places to photograph surprise proposals because it naturally creates a private, meaningful moment surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Combined with waterfalls, koi ponds, Japanese gardens, and the historic beauty of Balboa Park, it's easy to see why so many couples choose to begin their forever here.
Whether you're planning a quiet weekday morning proposal or an engagement session afterward, it's one of San Diego's most unforgettable proposal destinations.
