If you’re planning a surprise proposal or an engagement session in San Diego, you’ve probably already discovered that pricing is all over the map. Some photographers bundle planning support and sneak-peeks; others keep it bare-bones with digital files only. We did the homework for you—reviewing publicly listed proposal and engagement session pricing across individual photographers and marketplaces in San Diego as of August 27, 2025—and distilled it into a practical guide you can actually use. Below you’ll find average costs by session length, what’s typically included, the add-ons that can quietly inflate your total, and where our packages sit (with more value baked in). Our aim: a clear, apples-to-apples framework so you can book with confidence.
What we looked at: public price pages for San Diego proposal/engagement sessions, plus marketplace package pages that publish exact minutes and photo counts. Across this sample, short “proposal minis” ranged from ~30–45 minutes, standard sessions clustered around 60 minutes, and extended experiences ran 90–120 minutes. Deliverables commonly included a private gallery and 20–100 edited images; planning help and prints varied widely.
Average costs in San Diego (proposal & engagement)
30–45 minutes (proposal “mini”):
Most quick sessions sit around $300–$450, with marketplaces often posting a fixed package for 20–35 edited photos. Median lands close to $375 based on our sample. Expect one location, the moment itself, and a few portraits after.
≈60 minutes (standard proposal or engagement):
This is the most common format in San Diego. Publicly listed rates cluster between $500 and $700, with a median around $650 from our one-hour sample; you’ll typically see 35–100 edited images and a private gallery. Some providers sit lower (high-volume studios), while boutique brands and lifestyle specialists trend higher.
90–120 minutes (extended or “experience” sessions):
Extended coverage commonly prices in the $600–$1,000+ range. You’re paying for more variety (multiple looks/nearby locations), extra candid coverage around the moment, and time for styled portraits afterward. High-touch boutique offerings can exceed $1,000.
Premium & boutique tiers:
A subset of San Diego photographers position proposals as a premium service (weekend vs. weekday pricing), commonly $800–$1,000+ for ~1 hour with ~50 edited images and a few retouched favorites—often without prints included.
What’s usually included (and what’s not)
Edited images + gallery: Every provider includes an online gallery; photo counts vary: ~20–35 for minis, 35–100 for 60-minute sessions. Turnaround times range from 24 hours for sneak peeks to about 5 business days(sometimes longer) for full galleries.
Planning help: Many include basic location suggestions; comprehensive timelines, cover stories (for undercover proposals), and detailed scouting are less universal and often drive price differences.
Prints/keepsakes: Standard listings are digital-only; physical prints, albums, or wall art tend to be add-ons unless you pick a premium bundle.
Add-ons you might miss:
Permits & venue/location fees (parks, beaches, rooftops) are usually not included—budget separately.
Travel/time buffers (farther beaches, peak-traffic windows) can add fees.
Rush delivery or video add-ons can shift totals fast.
