On July 9, we received a message from Katelyn:
“Hi! It’s last minute, but we’re looking for a photographer for an elopement Saturday, July 11.”
Two days’ notice may not leave much time to plan a wedding, but this was more than a spontaneous decision. Katelyn’s brother, Andrew, is active-duty military and had recently learned that he could be deploying soon. Katelyn and Anthony had originally planned to get married in the fall, with Andrew officiating their ceremony. Once they realized he might not be there, their plans quickly changed.
Family members began arranging last-minute flights from Texas, and everyone came together to help make the elopement possible. What could have been an overwhelming situation became something deeply meaningful: an intimate family wedding aboard a 36-foot Fountaine Pajot catamaran in Coronado.

Planning a Coronado Boat Elopement in Two Days
While Katelyn and Anthony handled the wedding arrangements and coordinated with family members flying in from Texas, Steph and I got to work on the photography plan.
We researched boat wedding photography, studied posing ideas on Pinterest and social media, and created a timeline and detailed shot list. We thought about where the couple could stand, how the direction of the sunlight might affect the photographs and how we could move around the boat without interrupting the ceremony or blocking anyone’s view.
We also had to learn some essential nautical terminology before stepping aboard:
The bow is the front of the boat.
The stern is the back of the boat.
Port refers to the left side when facing the bow.
Starboard refers to the right side when facing the bow.
Knowing these terms helped us communicate more clearly with the captain and understand where important moments would happen during the ceremony.
Planning is important, especially when photographing a moving boat with limited space and changing light. However, one of the most valuable things we have learned over the years cannot be picked up from a book or photography guide: how to read a room and feel the energy between people.
Our timeline and shot list gave us direction, but the love within this family ultimately guided how we photographed the day.

There was no large audience and no pressure to perform for anyone else. For a few quiet moments, it was simply Katelyn and Anthony standing together and sharing the promises they had written for one another.

As the rest of the family arrived, everyone boarded the 36-foot Fountaine Pajot catamaran and prepared to set sail through San Diego Bay.
The energy immediately changed.
Family members were excited to see one another, bottles of wine began to open and charcuterie boards were passed around. Everyone was laughing, talking and enjoying the fact that they had managed to come together for Katelyn and Anthony on such short notice.
Although we had prepared a complete shot list, we quickly realized that much of the day needed to be photographed candidly. Constantly directing or posing everyone would have taken them away from the reason they were there: to spend time together and celebrate the couple.
Instead, we took a more documentary-style approach. We photographed the laughter, conversations, hugs and little interactions that naturally unfolded as the boat moved across the bay.
These unscripted moments became an important part of the story.
What Is It Like to Photograph an Elopement on a Boat?
Photographing an elopement on a boat is very different from working at a traditional wedding venue.
Space is limited, the scenery is constantly changing and the surface beneath you never completely stops moving. A photographer must be able to balance safely, move through narrow areas and anticipate moments before they happen.
The bow and stern offered different views, but moving between them required us to carefully navigate tight walkways without getting in the way of the couple, their family or the crew. We also had to steady ourselves as the boat moved up and down with the water—all while protecting our cameras and composing each photograph.
On land, a photographer can often step backward, change angles or ask the couple to hold a position for another minute. On a boat, there may only be a short window to capture a photograph with a particular section of the San Diego skyline, Coronado Bridge or open water in the background.
The environment forces you to be observant and creative. You have to understand the light, anticipate the boat’s movement and recognize when a moment is about to happen.
It was challenging, exciting and one of the most rewarding photography experiences we have had.
A Wedding Ceremony Near the Coronado Bridge
Before passing beneath the Coronado Bridge, the captain anchored the boat so the family could gather for the ceremony.
Katelyn and Anthony took their places near the bow while Andrew stood in front of them, ready to officiate his sister’s wedding. Having him perform the ceremony was especially meaningful because his possible deployment was the reason everyone had come together so quickly.
With San Diego Bay surrounding them and their closest family members gathered nearby, Katelyn and Anthony began their ceremony.
It did not feel rushed or incomplete. It felt intentional.
The last-minute change of plans had created a wedding that centered completely on the people who mattered most.
