Starting Out: $50 to $100 Sessions (Learning & Gaining Experience)

When Stephanie first started photography, we were still dating. I’d go with her to shoots and help carry gear, hold reflectors, and set things up. Back then, she was charging anywhere from $50 to $100 per session.

It wasn’t about the money — it was about getting experience. She was still learning camera settings, experimenting with natural light, and practicing editing techniques. During this time, she also said yes to a lot of collaborations and free work. Why? Because every shoot taught her something new.

If you're just starting out:

• It’s okay to charge less.

• Focus on learning: exposure, posing, editing, and client communication.

• Say yes to opportunities that help you build a portfolio (even if they don’t pay much at first).

What I’ve Learned in 3.5 Years of Being My Own Boss (That Retail Could Never Teach Me)

Self-employment has been the hardest, most humbling, and most liberating experience of my life.

When I left retail management—where I ran teams of 6 to 20 people depending on the season—I thought I knew what hard work was. I’d worked weekends, holidays, late nights, back-to-back double shifts. I knew how to manage schedules, hit sales targets, coach underperformers, and keep my store afloat during Black Friday chaos.

But nothing in that job prepared me for the mental, emotional, and physical weight of running my own business.

Three and a half years of building a business from scratch has taught me more than any job ever could. The hustle, the freedom, the failures, the growth—every step has been worth it. Retail gave me a script. Entrepreneurship gave me a blank canvas.

1. The Learning Curve is Brutal (and Beautiful)

I’ve learned more in 3.5 years of working for myself than I did in all my years managing retail. You don’t just “wear many hats”—you are the business. Sales, marketing, taxes, SEO, social media, customer service, copywriting, networking, branding, accounting, production, logistics, and sometimes, janitor.

➡️ We’ve launched two websites now. Our first? It was called Hubfey. We spent a few hours a week on it (if that), didn’t touch SEO, had no social presence, and honestly expected it to just take off. Spoiler: it didn’t.

That failure forced us to learn.
Learn how to build a real website, how to create SEO-friendly pages, how Google actually works. We fumbled forward, made a ton of mistakes, Googled our way through it, and slowly found our rhythm.

When we launched lastminutephotoshoot.com, we started with zero traffic. I remember in January of this year, we hit 40 visitors for the month, and I was pumped. Now, we’re just shy of 1,000 a month—and it’s wild to think how far we’ve come. Weekly leads. Monthly bookings. We’re finally seeing momentum. It’s like watching a dream grow legs and start walking.

There’s no safety net. And strangely, that’s what makes the growth so real.

2. Discipline is the Real Boss

In retail, someone told me where to be and when. Clock in, clock out, repeat.
Now? No one’s watching. No one’s clapping. No one’s warning you when you’re coasting or burning out.

I had to build discipline from scratch—learning how to stay focused when money was low, when clients ghosted, when doubt crept in.

➡️ Everyone online says you need a perfect morning routine to succeed. Ours? It’s simple and sustainable. We wake up early, go for a walk to clear our heads, get errands and housework done in the morning, then spend the rest of the day either editing, working on the website, or creating content when we don’t have a schedule photoshoot.

When we need a break, we walk our three pups or hit the home gym. Once a week, we carve out time just for creativity—no client work, just us creating for the love of it. Or we’ll escape to the mountains for a hike and fresh air. It’s not glamorous—but it’s honest. And it works for us.

3. Side Hustles Aren’t Failures—They’re Chapters

Before Last Minute Photoshoot, we tried everything. Multiple side hustles, pivot after pivot. Some flopped. Some showed us what we didn’t want.

But each one taught us something.

What we learned?
No one tells you to clock in when you’re self-employed. That food delivery grind taught us time management and hustle. We’d write “Thank you” notes with orders just to brighten someone’s day—and we saw it reflected in our tips.

Those “failures” taught us that a website isn’t a goldmine unless you nourish it—consistently. You have to learn sales, marketing, SEO, customer care. You can’t fake momentum.

4. You Don’t Just Work On Your Business, You Work On Yourself

This journey has forced me to face every insecurity I had around money, value, rejection, visibility, and worth. Running a business is personal development on steroids.

Back in early June, we received a message through our website from someone named Carlos. He had stumbled upon one of our blogs about surprise proposal photography in Temecula and reached out with a big idea. After a quick chat the next day, we knew right away this was going to be a special one.

Even before officially booking us, Carlos was already brainstorming ideas with us. We started building out a plan together—storyboarding different scenarios, researching winery options, and contacting a handful of venues on his behalf. After narrowing it down to two locations, we landed on Vitagliano Winery in Temecula. Not only is it stunning, but their team was incredibly kind and accommodating from start to finish.

The Cover Story

To keep the surprise alive, we built a little story together. Carlos told Isabella that Vitagliano had hired photographers (us!) to take candid shots of guests enjoying the grounds for their social media. The idea? Blend into the winery crowd, casually snap content, and wait for golden hour to strike.

When the big day came, we arrived early to scout the location and make sure everything was in place. Around 5 p.m., Carlos and Isabella showed up, and the “tour” began. A golf cart (a.k.a. their chariot) whisked us all around the vineyard while we played our part—chatting, snapping candids, and pretending like it was just another day on assignment.

From Tastings to The Yes

We wrapped up the tour at the winery’s restaurant, where Carlos and Isabella enjoyed a mini tasting. We then gave them space, telling them we had to go photograph other guests (aka keep the act going). As we wandered, we texted Carlos updates—letting him know when and where to meet us.

Just before golden hour, we reunited for what Isabella thought were more “social media photos.” We captured a few beautiful candids before leading them down to the dock. And then, the moment happened.

Carlos got down on one knee, and Isabella’s smile lit up the entire vineyard.

The Afterglow

We spent the next 30 minutes photographing the newly engaged couple, capturing every joyful moment and all that post-YES magic. Before we wrapped, we made our way back to the restaurant, where we shared a celebratory glass of wine with them. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Colleen had filled out the form on our website, asking if we were available to photograph her civil courthouse wedding in Santa Ana. She and her fiancé Joshua were planning to tie the knot at the historic Orange County Courthouse—a beautiful building that practically begs to be photographed. We weren’t booked for that day, and something about her message felt serendipitous. Lately, our focus has been on family sessions, maternity shoots, and surprise proposals, but Stephanie and I have been itching to get back into weddings. Wedding Day

We were up by 3:00 AM. Two hours of driving, plus coffee and gas stops—non-negotiables. The courthouse didn’t open until 8:00 AM, but we wanted to be on-site early to scout photo locations and be ready before the groom arrived. When we got there, the air was still crisp, and the streets were quiet. We walked the property, found the best light, envisioned their ceremony, and mapped out a few must-have shots.

When Joshua arrived, we introduced ourselves and waited together for Colleen. She ran a little late, but we expected that—it’s always better to over-prepare and stay calm. Weddings can be emotional and unpredictable, so we show up grounded. No panic, no pressure, just support.

Because of the delay, their appointment time was pushed back a bit, which actually worked in our favor. We took full advantage of the empty hallways and got some stunning shots inside the building before it got too busy. The architecture of the Santa Ana courthouse has this old-world charm, and when you frame it just right, it adds so much story to even the quietest moments.

Once their number was called, we captured the marriage license signing—something many couples forget to document, but it’s part of the story. Then we were invited into the chapel where they exchanged personal vows in a sweet, emotional ceremony that brought a few of us to tears.

After the Ceremony

The rest of the day felt like a breeze. We moved outside for family and group portraits, got some fun candids, and captured the newlyweds together in quiet moments that we know they’ll cherish forever.

When it came time to edit, something unexpected happened. We rarely lean into black and white edits or add intentional grain—but for this shoot, it just felt right. Here’s our honest tip: book your civil marriage appointment as early in the day as possible. The courthouse opens at 8:00 AM, and it fills up fast—especially on Fridays or near long weekends. By the time we wrapped our indoor photos just before 11:00 AM, the entire building was packed with families, couples, and other wedding parties. There would’ve been no way to capture clean, uninterrupted shots on the iconic staircase or upstairs hallway after that.

Early time slots = more privacy and cleaner shots. Trust us.

Visit the official OC Clerk-Recorder website to book your civil marriage license signing and optional ceremony. They offer weekday slots at this location.

Even with an appointment, you'll need time to check in, go through security, and get your bearings. We recommend showing up early so you can breathe, take it in, and prep for photos.

Your appointment will begin with checking IDs and signing paperwork. This typically takes 15–30 minutes.

4. Optional chapel ceremony
You can opt for a quick civil ceremony performed by an officiant in their charming vintage chapel. If you choose this route, bring witnesses or use courthouse staff. Vows are short and sweet—but don’t let that fool you. There’s still plenty of emotion packed into those few minutes.
